Antonio reminds Fantasy managers of versatility

Liverpool and West Ham began their pre-season campaign on Thursday with mixed implications for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Obviously, we are still at the early stage of summer friendlies so a lot of our observations should be taken with a pinch of salt, to some extent.

However, both of Thursday’s matches threw up talking points that we have to make sure we stay on top of.

Tranmere Rovers 0-6 Liverpool

Divock Origi (right) will be on plenty of Fantasy radars this summer

Goals: Nathaniel Clyne, Rhian Brewster x2, Curtis Jones, Divock Origi (£5.5m), Bobby Duncan

Assists: Brewster, Harry Wilson, James Milner (£5.5m), Ben Woodburn, Paul Glatzel

Jurgen Klopp mostly used the kids as his side began their pre-season campaign with a 6-0 win at Tranmere, a match that featured two Liverpool teams getting 45 minutes each.

However, there were still eight senior players with FPL prices who were involved for the Reds.

Divock Origi (£5.5m) has already been discussed as a potential budget differential for the start of the season as Sadio Mané‘s (£11.5m) involvement at the African Cup of Nations goes on.

The Belgian forward was used as the centre-forward in a front-three for the second 45 minutes and came away with a goal to his name.

He was also credited with his ability to hold the ball up for his wider colleagues.

“Sadio Mané is in the semi-finals [of the AFCON], so that means he has two more games for sure and will come [back] late.” – Jurgen Klopp

With Mané’s Senegal team now the favourites to win the African Cup of Nations, there is definitely a chance that Origi may have to come into the team for him either in the Community Shield or in Gameweek 1.

Furthermore, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) is also expected back late after his Copa America involvement, as is Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), although their international duty is already over.

“The Brazilians have finally finished their 30-month season, exactly like Mo, and they will come but we will not have a pre-season together, we will only have a week before we start with the games. Tonight it looked like we can find some solutions” – Jurgen Klopp

Either way, Origi will be using pre-season to stake a claim for a place in the Liverpool starting XI so we should continue to keep an eye on him.

Against Tranmere, Joe Gomez (£5.5m) and Joel Matip (£5.5m) both played but not together. One was used in each half, the England international in the first and Cameroon defender Matip in the second.

Both centre-backs have the potential to offer a budget route into the Liverpool defence alongside Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) this season but at this early stage, it is still unclear which it will be.

Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) did not get any minutes although there is plenty of the pre-season campaign left to play.

Fabinho (£5.5m), Adam Lallana (£6.0m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.5m) and James Milner (£5.5m) were also treated to 45 minutes against Tranmere, the latter claiming an assist.

These players are all likely to be gunning for a place in the starting XI for Gameweek 1, with a particular interest in Oxlade-Chamberlain as he makes his return from injury.

Several options in the central midfield position may struggle to be fit for the start of the new campaign.

Naby Keita‘s (£6.0m) Guinea were knocked out in the second round but the central midfielder also aggravated an adductor injury whilst in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri (£6.5m) is out for “a while” according to Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool first-half XI (4-3-3): Mignolet; Larouci, Gomez, Phillips, Clyne; Milner, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Kent, Brewster, Wilson.

Liverpool second-half XI (4-3-3): Jaros; A Lewis, Matip, Johnston, Hoever; Fabinho, C Jones, Woodburn; Glatzel (Atherton 78′), Origi, Duncan

SCR Altach 2-3 West Ham United

Manuel Pellegrini has a vacancy up front at West Ham and Fantasy managers will be keen to know who will fill it

Goals: Carlos Sánchez (£4.5m), Michail Antonio (£7.0m), Issa Diop (£4.5m)

Assists: Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m), Mark Noble (£5.0m), Jack Wilshere (£5.0m)

There is keen interest in who will occupy the number one centre-forward slot at West Ham this season in the wake of Marko Arnautovic’s departure.

Michail Antonio (£7.0m) drew first blood in the race to replace the Austrian as the Hammers began their pre-season campaign in Arnautovic’s homeland.

The FPL midfielder was deployed up front in a 4-2-3-1 formation against SCR Altach and also found the back of the net too.

After Carlos Sánchez (£4.5m) had headed home a Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m) corner, Antonio made it 2-0 with a smart run to fool the Altach defence.

Mark Noble (£5.0m) played a long ball from deep to the pacey attacker, who beat the offside trap, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home.

Obviously, it is early days in West Ham’s pre-season campaign so we certainly don’t want to encourage interest in Antonio based off one outing.

But is worth making ourselves aware that Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández (£6.0m) may have to hold off competition from him to claim the centre-forward role from him this summer.

Manuel Pellegrini largely went for the approach of two teams per half, making eight changes at half-time.

Just three players were treated to more than an hour of football in Austria.

One of those was new goalkeeper Roberto (£4.5m) who played 76 minutes before being replaced by fellow new recruit David Martin.

Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) was one of six players priced up by FPL to have no involvement in the game.

New signing Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) was one of them, while Fabian Balbuena‘s (£4.5m) involvement with Paraguay at the Copa America has delayed his return to the West Ham camp and Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) is on leave following DR Congo’s elimination from the African Cup of Nations in the second round.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) was left out of the matchday squad for precautionary reasons, while Xande Silva (£4.5m) also played no part.

“It was a good workout. We worked well physically but we conceded two goals, which was too much, but we won, which is the most important thing.” – Issa Diop

“I’m happy to score but obviously it was just a friendly game, so to get a goal is not very important, but we always want to win every game, so of course I am happy about this goal.” – Issa Diop

West Ham XI (4-2-3-1): Roberto (Martin 76′); Fredericks (Zabaleta 45′), Diop (Rice 68′), Ogbonna (Reid 45′), Johnson (Byram 68′); Sanchez (Obiang 45′), Noble (Cullen 45′); Snodgrass (Yarmolenko 45′), Lanzini (Wilshere 45′), Felipe Anderson (Diangana 45′); Antonio (Chicharito 46).

Even at this point, I'm very happy with my team aside from one area - having someone like Kane and a 5m defender (Ake or otherwise), or Vardy and Laporte.

I know most here are going with Vardy, due to his strong finish to last season and Leicester's strength in midfield (especially following the glamour around the Tielemans and Perez signings). Still, I can't help but feel Kane is being overlooked despite Son being away, and the two home fixtures against AVL and NEW in the first 3 GWs are shouting goals and captaincy potential. I prefer the balance of my team with Vardy, but now Kane has had an actual summer break unlike last season, is he ready for an explosive start to the 2019/20 campaign?

Can anyone help persuade me one way or the other?

Of course, especially with Salah's ownership %. I hope preseason gives us a better understanding before August anyway, but in the back of my mind although I could create a balanced team without Kane I know I'll end up scrambling to get him back in once he actually starts firing.

That being said I am considering a sneaky Salah + Vardy + kdb with a swap to Son gw 3 and captaining him instead. Gives me 3 premium ish players. Son and Vardy are 10million+ players available for sub 10 imo

Sounds good to me. Son perhaps is undervalued, but I think Vardy is priced fairly especially when you consider he is now 32 and may not be able to rely on his pace advantage over other players as much as previous seasons.

Last year Laporte beat Ake by 57 points. I don't see those scores changing massively for either of them this year.

If Kane is back to his best, say 220 points, do you think Vardy will be around the 160 mark?

There's not much in the fixtures to separate them either - Leicester's aren't great, but those are the ones Vardy thrived in

The safe move is Vardy and Laporte IMO.

That's over a season.. Ake can easily match laporte over a short term run of fixtures.. And then you swap him for the next 5 and below defender for their run. You get 3 chances (season start, 1st WC and 2nd WC) to get your sub 5.0 correct.. So that's a minimum of 3 sub 5.0 bites at the cherry with good fixtures vs 1 premium ie laporte. And with a bit of luck you can match premium defenders by timing sub 5.0 defenders correctly.

Atleast that's what I always do for my 3rd defender spot.. Usually works out well. Laporte caused nothing but frustration for most of last season. He was a legend in the dgws but most Got rid during his dry spell between November and Feb. Premium defenders end up being nothing but money banks for the attack over the season. Liverpool defenders though..thats another story. Their attacking returns make TAA and Robertson actual season keepers

True, but while Laporte's returns where a bit geared towards a couple of big hauls, he'll still beat someone like Ake 9 times out of 10 over a 4-6 week period.

Laporte has great fixtures at the start too.

No reason you have to have a 5.0 striker IMO

Agreed. Sub 5.0 strikers are a waste. The way I always set up my team is a set and Forget keeper (again 3 different keepers due to the same 3 bites of the cherry logic over the season), 2 set and Forget premium defenders(pool), 2 set and Forget premium attackers(Salah, sterling/Kane), 2 medium term set and Forget reliable fpl players (Siggy, bsilva), a playing bench(dendonker), a three defender rotation and my transfers are then reserved for sub 7.0 attackers to catch their form and fixtures

I agree with this approach too. My only difference this season is investing more of the 7m into attacking options in defence (e.g. TAA, Digne, Coleman) as I do think they will score higher than their midfield counterparts.

Note: I am not and ake fan.. I am however rotating Burnley, O'Connell and Diop for one spot.. Get about 10 home games before I need to look for the next sub 5 rotation for that one spot. Hoping that 30+ home games with a 4.5 defender(due to rotation) will give me a similar outlay to the premium defenders.

You're definitely right about the fixtures, and on paper (and for team balance) Vardy and Laporte makes the most sense.

The problem is down to captaincy potential. I don't know about you, but I'm far less likely to captain Vardy even during the easier fixtures than I would be Kane, so his 'points ceiling' is much higher, which you have to take into consideration too.

Only Salah and De Bruyne (I know, not a popular captaincy pick but he is my main City player). I expect Salah to have the captaincy the vast majority of the time, but ideally I would like a stronger backup alternative and Vardy just seems to edge on the risky side for me, even if he does have a strong record against the top 6.

Who else do you have besides Vardy and Salah for the armband?

              Sounds similar to mine:

              Ederson
              Robertson / TAA / Laporte / Digne
              Salah / KDB / Siggy / Fraser
              King / Jota

I'll likely captain Salah or KDB most weeks

Very! I'm surprised you're not actually including any Leicester players, though. Salah and KDB both seem good options, but ideally I'm trying to find a stronger alternative for the start of the season.

As I'm mostly settled with KDB over Sterling, that really only leaves Kane or Aguero!

I've tried a draft with Vardy

                  Ederson
                  VVD / Robo / Mendy / Coleman
                  Salah / KDB / Fraser / Mili
                  King / Vardy

Just not sure I like it as much overall

It looks pretty good! I'd personally switch Mili to someone like Perez or Tielemans, and Coleman to Digne.

Mendy is an interesting one to watch in preseason, but you could swap him for Zinchenko (especially with Delph now likely moving to Everton, so less competition) which frees up 0.5m if you wanted to upgrade Fraser to someone like Sigurdsson or Richarlison.

I know, I keep coming back to this rotation except I'm looking at Vardy and Laporte or Kane and a cheaper defender.

At the moment, Kane's captaincy potential has me leaning towards him, but the problem is finding any decent 5m options at the back as I don't really want to start with Ake and Bournemouth at the beginning.

Captaincy has me leaning the other way. I've splurged on Salah for captaincy and if form was similar I don't see a week where I'd captain Kane except maybe 3 but that's debatable.
If salah isn't in top form in the first two of be selling him for a sterling/kun/Kane anyway

In the first two GWs? Wow, I hope that works out but Salah is most likely going to be in my team for a while. Too many times I've taken a high value player out because they seem out of form only for them to score a brace the following GW against seemingly tougher opposition.

Looking at Liverpool's fixtures, I can see GWs 3, 6 and 9 where I wouldn't want to captain Salah, where Kane gives a strong alternative (NEW home, LEI away and WAT home).

I have no problem selling anyone. Big hitters or players with value tied up. Not in a knee jerky way. I don't care if Salah blanks or scores but how he and the team are playing. If after two I predict someone to score better in the short term then I'll get them. This is gw1 lottery time. We are picking a team with no form to gauge. We are choosing blind. Need to adapt to form fast early season because unless you are lucky most of your decisions in initial selection wont be ideal

While I do agree with most of what you're saying, this to me always applies to the riskier options around the 6.5-9m mark, the new transfers and recently promoted players for example.

For example, you'd do well to switch from Sigurdsson to Fraser when the latter is hitting top form with decent upcoming fixtures, but I always find this tends to backfire with the more premium 'proven' options like Kane, Salah and Aguero because they are so often fixture-proof. Each to their own strategy though, so good luck!

I'm not talking about selling players every couple weeks all season. The more form we have to assess the more informed decisions we can make and then you should be patient and trust in your decisions more. If a buy a player it is for a run of fixtures because I've seen enough to back him for that run. But gw1 my whole team is up for the chop as I picked them all blind.
Yes the best players can score huge any game including straight after you sell them. Same goes for the players you don't own though. If you have Salah and sell for sterling and then Salah gets a hatty and sterling blanks it burns. If instead you don't sell and sterling gets a hatty while Salah blanks it feels very different despite being the same scenario. It's a cognitive bias called the endowment effect. Is humans are riddled with them 😀

Not having vardy doesn't scare me, scores in 1s mainly, odd 2, probably never captain him.

Just because it's preseason, I had to check. Surprisingly, Kane only scored two braces last season (no hat-tricks) against Everton and Huddersfield.

In fairness he was out of action for extended periods of time with ankle and ligament injuries, but there's nothing to say he couldn't score a brace against most Premier League sides.

Of course he could so can Vardy. Last season brace against Arsenal. Season before braces against Arsenal and spurs. But of course they are more likely against weak defences

Yes, but coming back to what I've mentioned to others here (and why I posted the original question to begin with), you're more likely to captain Kane against the weaker opposition than someone like Vardy, so his points ceiling is usually higher over the course of the season.

No I don't think he'll get 12 braces in a season and neither will Kane. Just pointing out Vardy is a different animal in this Rodgers setup. They used to use 2 holding mids and sit deep and play on the counter so he fed off scraps. Now it's very attack minded with two excellent passers looking to thread him through constantly

Could Perez take away from some of Vardy's goal potential, though? He doesn't seem like the assist type, and may likely play up close behind or alongside Vardy depending on the settled formation.

I'd expect him to compliment Vardy well. Perez is a hard worker, intelligent with his movements off the ball and a good team player. His pace would stretch defences too opening up more through ball chances from tielemans and Maddy to Vardy.
I think Perez will play wide fwiw

I hope that's the case, but it does seem Perez and Maddison both tend to thrive in the no. 10 role at the centre, which means one of them will have to play in their less favoured position.

If Perez does do well in a wide role during preseason, then this does give more strength to the case for going with someone like Vardy (plus Tielemans, Maddison or Perez) at the start of the season.

True but he thrived wide last season and got career best returns.
Rodger seems to prefer a 4141 with Maddison alongside tielemans but opted for two holding mids in a couple of the tougher games which meant maddison played wide. Maybe he'll change systems but I reckon Perez on the right in 4141 would be perfect with Pereira overlapping him. If ndidi and Choudry are both playing Perez would presumably be benched

That's exactly my line of thinking too. I just need to find a decent 5m option at the back to allow me to fit him in, but keep coming back to Ake (or two rotating 4.5m options, which I'm less keen about).

You need 1/2 playing subs pal. I would downgrade Digne to Coleman and Grealish will be a great player but he will dictate the play and end of dropping deep to collect the ball. I think Doucoure is a better pick but maybe preseason will change my mind.

To what extent are your selections being weighted by the possibility of an early WC?

Initially I was thinking I’d try and WC late. I’m now thinking that’s pie in the sky given my play style as I’ll almost certainly try and move aggressively early.

This means for me ditching players who might be good long term but be less explosive short term. So for me

Siggy out - he blanks a lot
KdB out - again more likely long term value and uncertain starts anyway
No VVD or Laporte as they look best long term imo
Kane In - one horrid fixture but some early great ones

The plan is to start with team good enough and try to wc later. Worst case scenario would be early wc with false bandwagons. It is always good to have wc to use if needed.

There will be more info available later and some fixture changes.

I don't commit to an early wildcard but it's pretty much inevitable I'll use it within a few weeks.
Picking initial team I dont look beyond 3 or 4 games. I also look for explosive players with the right early fixtures that I think could fly out of the gate.
But I disagree with your assessment of vvd, Laporte, kdb

KdB is my bind. I really really want him but keeping thinking but ...

Personally, I like Digne a lot. He's got all the attributes to be a top FPL defender this year.

Siggy is expensive, but is the best source of points at Everton, and was the 4th highest scoring midfielder last season. Owning him for an amazing run of fixtures is hard to turn down. Maybe a new Everton striker will change that.

But you are the manager of your team, with all the power, so ultimately it's your call.

No value in premium forwards as far as I'm concerned. You might want to play differently to me though

If we see lots of sprinting, pressing and hard-work from him today, I'm very interested.

A change in attitude would be huge.

Don't like DCL or 3 up front in general personally. Overall a decent and we'll balanced team though

Decent. Don't like dcl and think there are a few options to skim 0.5 and boost him to a jota or deulofeu.

Best 2 forwards for a combined cost of £13.5m or less? Both got to be nailed.

    King + Deu?

      King and Deulofeu, yeah.

Jota is the other option, but Wolves' fixtures aren't great, plus they have Europa qualifying before their matches.

You could throw Barnes or Wood at Burnley into the conversation too.

      They're both getting overlooked

Would be amazing to find a nailed Utd attacking option at 6/7m. They'll still score goals.

It's very possible he could nail a place if he shows he's not lazy like many of the others, also there is a gap on the right of midfield

He's definitely not lazy. I think he's been signed for his mentality and his ridiculous speed. I highly doubt he's good enough to be a starter in the premier league yet

    RMT

    Pope (Button)
    A.Smith Laporte Vertonghen Robertson (Fredericks)

      It's decent for sure.

I know they have those first 2 fixtures but I still don't rate Bournemouth defense.

Norwood rotates with Fredericks I guess? Still not totally enamored with either of those.

And I'd still want to see it happening for KDB in pre-season before picking him.

i dont really like the bournemouth defence either I just need someone to play first to games whilst fredericks and vertonghen play city in the first 2 games. norwood is a weak link for sure just cant see anyone better at that price

Let’s see. Stones/Zinch/5.5m City starting defender.

James hopefully a starter as Ole says.
