Mane a doubt for Gameweek 1 as Senegal make AFCON final

The Gameweek 1 availability of Sadio Mane (£11.5m) must surely be in question after Senegal made it through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2002.

Senegal face Algeria in Friday’s final, which is staged exactly three weeks before Liverpool’s season-opening fixture against Norwich City.

Jurgen Klopp appears to be giving all of his players a three-week break following their international exertions this summer – as happened with several players after the 2018 World Cup – and Mane’s delayed departure from Egypt casts into doubt his chances of featuring against the newly promoted Canaries, at least from the start.

It’s not just Mane who is representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, of course, and we’ll be bringing you up to date on the other FPL assets involved at the quarter-final and semi-final stages in the Scout Notes article below.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Egypt bowed out of the competition at the round-of-16 stage.

Senegal 1-0 Benin
Senegal 1-0 Tunisia (after extra-time)

Mane was heavily involved in Senegal’s quarter-final win over Benin, teeing up Everton’s Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) for the match-winning goal and seeing two strikes of his own chalked off after VAR intervention.

Mane lasted the whole 90 minutes, along with Cheikhou Kouyate (£5.0m) – again playing at centre-half – and Newcastle United’s forgotten man Henri Saivet.

Gueye was withdrawn just before the game entered stoppage time.

The Lions of Teranga then saw off Tunisia in a tense semi-final, with the game going to extra-time after a goalless 90 minutes.

Dylan Bronn headed into his own net to give Senegal the victory, although Mane had earlier wasted an excellent chance when screwing a shot wide after rounding Tunisia goalkeeper Mouez Hassan.

That was the Liverpool winger’s only attempt on goal in the entire game and he was perhaps more peripheral than he had been throughout the tournament.

The former Southampton man also ceded penalty-taking duties after two misses from the spot in the tournament, allowing Saivet to step up from 12 yards in the 80th minute – only for the Newcastle man to see his effort saved.

Mane said:

It’s a momentary withdrawal. I have missed penalties in both games and must admit that it is not a good ratio.

I do not want to penalise my team and, at least for the time being, I’m going to stand aside for the penalties and let other teammates get on with it.

When I return to my club, I will continue to work hard to improve on this aspect.

Tunisia had a penalty award of their own overturned after VAR intervention, meanwhile.

Mane, Saivet, Gueye and Kouyate played all 120 minutes of Sunday’s semi-final.

Nigeria 2-1 South Africa
Ivory Coast 1-1 Algeria (3-4 penalties)
Algeria 2-1 Nigeria

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) will be up against Mane and Senegal in Friday’s final after Algeria saw off Nigeria in dramatic fashion.

Mahrez curled in an injury-time free-kick to give his country a 2-1 win, having earlier forced an own goal from Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong with a fizzed cross from the right flank.

Mahrez, Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) and Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) played the full 90 minutes for their respective countries, while Leon Balogun (£4.5m) was an unused substitute for the Super Eagles.

Algeria had progressed to the semis following a penalty shootout victory over Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals.

Neither Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) nor (surprisingly) Mahrez were on the field by the time the game reached that point, having been replaced on 94 and 86 minutes respectively.

Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) was also withdrawn in extra time but the Aston Villa striker had at least found the back of the net by that point, collecting Zaha’s pass and rifling in a low shot from the edge of the Algerian box.

The Palace winger cut a frustrated figure at times and picked up a booking after a clash with Ramy Bensebaini, although the Algerian defender didn’t do himself any favours with a theatrical reaction after contact with Zaha’s arm.

Serge Aurier (£5.0m), who has picked up hamstring and wrist injuries during the tournament, watched the game from the sidelines.

A day earlier, Nigeria had seen off South Africa in their own quarter-final.

Iwobi impressed and it was from his cross down the left that Nigeria first took the lead, with Samuel Chukwueze finishing at the second attempt.

Troost-Ekong scored an 89th-minute winner before Iwobi was replaced by Balogun in injury time.

Ndidi again lasted the course in central midfield.

The tournament is not over for Nigeria despite their subsequent semi-final defeat: the third-place play-off takes place on Wednesday evening between Tunisia and the Super Eagles.

        Yes you can.

The Liverpool attack is an unknown quantity right now with Mane presumably out and Mo and Bobby joining late.

It’s a judgement call of course but I’m doubting the Liverpool attack will be a well-oiled machine until a few weeks in. Mo is a fairly easy transfer in when he starts hitting. Week 1 is just one week

Here’s my variant. Compensation found in double City and Fraser Wilson - weaker at the back than yours. Added Kane for extra captain option - the real problem I see in your side.

      Fab
      TAA VVD 5.5 4.5
      Sterling KdB Perez Fraser
      Kane Wilson

Coleman and O’connell are placeholders. Might scrimp 0.5 from Fab to get extra 4.5

Mo as being impossible to cover is a fallacy. I got a green arrow without him when he hit a hattie on TC week.

It’s the perma captain thing that puts me off. He was a horrid failure for me as captain last time.

Admittedly I timed it wrong but in any given week there’s going to be an alternative that is equally viable unless it’s a Huddersfield at home scenario.

It feels like a negative and limiting ploy - hitting the right captain is one of the best ways to move up. He’ll only be the right captain from time to time unless he has a 2017/8.

At 9m+ you're looking at 5.5ppg returns arguably. Vardy has proved more capable of doing that consistently (eg Rodgers reign to date exceeded that). Kdb in his prime and City scoring 100 goals a season was hitting just over 5ppg. Both are on the margins of whether they are great value or flatter to deceive that there are better options because they're scoring points.

Bilva/sterling/kdb all priced about right I think in that the more you pay the more you get so easier to pick. Vardy vs Leicester mids is harder to predict the points breakdown - vardy bigger risk/reward

This is the only quote I've seen re Greenwood...

He's a natural finisher, a natural footballer. Right-footed, left-footed. I don't think he knows if he's more predominant on his right or his left. He takes penalties with both feet and free-kicks with both feet. He finds space naturally. He'll always end up with chances. He'll score goals this year, I am 100% sure of that.

He's on my watchlist. They don't seem to be attracting top players, they can't sell Sanchez as nobody will pay £500k a week and Lukaku is off. I reckon he will play this year.

I think he's behind Martial, Lingard and even James in the pecking order, especially as he'll miss most of pre-season, but he could be amazing at 7m if he does get a run in the team.

That's the quote I was thinking of.
Let me share my dirty little tactic with you. I'm going to put him in mt starting XI (with Rashford, as it happens). I'm not expecting OGS to start him, but with a lot of luck he comes on for 20 minutes and scores. If he doesn't I get 1 point. If he doesn't play my 1st sub comes on and likely gets 2 points. So I gamble and lose 1 point - I'll take that. If he scores most people will have him on the bench - I clean up, they get nowt. Yay me!

    A) Ederson + Walker-Peters
    B) Ryan + Laporte

Both cost 11.0 and if Trippier's move is confirmed I expect KWP to nail down the RB spot. Good coverage of City's defence and not exposed to Pep roulette for defensive starters (thinking of last season's teams starting with Otamendi)

Dunno. Seems an obvious one to me too, particularly as Juve showed an interest in Trippier. I can't say I've seen much of him though, so I'm not sure how he'd fit in Poch's system. Our FBs are much, much less attacking than in the days of 2016/17 Walker + Rose.

I haven't really watched much spurs, but that's helpful to know. How come the shift? It doesn't seem to have done them much good defensively - did much better statistically with clean sheets/ga in previous two seasons when they dominated team from the wings...would you expect similar clean sheets to last season or a bit of a return to higher mean - a little improvement and they are a great fantasy option (even pure defensive points of lloris/vertonghen)

Tough to say whether the FBs have got less attacking (better way to describe it than more defensive, if that makes sense) by circumstance or design. Probably mostly due to the deficiencies of the current crop.

We've switched to being a more direct team since the decline and departure of Dembele. This has meant we've controlled games far less and often played more physical/counter-attacking. I'd expect the arrival of Dembele to change things, as he gives us the option of playing through the midfield more and really bossing teams again. This should have +ve impact on our defensive returns as we hog the ball more. But as I said on a different post, there's going to be significant turnover in our defence this summer, so I'd avoid until it settles down. The value will probably be in Vertonghen though, as he's the only one guaranteed starts.

Aurier only one of those likely to 'nail' a place (ie 80% games) but may be injured at start of season, unclear yet. There's some value somewhere in the spurs fullbacks to be had you'd have thought (eg new marquee signing nailed at rb @ 5.5m, Aarons with occasional rotation @ 4.5m, no change aurier with occasional rotation @ 5m)

          ^Agree with this^

You might just get 3 games at the start of the year out of KWP, but after that it'll be mostly Aurier.

BBC coverage: "Ryan Snodgrass cuts back an inviting ball into the centre but Andriy Yarmolenko's shot is blocked"

Anyone know how when Ryan Snodgrass is going to be added to the game, and any guesses on the price? Could be gold if he nails down a starting berth.

He wants assurances on his playing time before signing. I know Pep loves him but with Fernandinho, De Bruyne, David Silva, Foden, Bernardo Silva and now Rodri, its hard to see unless there are injuries.

There was a 17 goal striker in there. Pretty good chance Palace will start the season with him as the main man - they have done for a while now. There’s been very little talk of replacements that are not of the up and coming variety.

He's a good player with plenty of potential - but he's got a lot to learn and is not ready for a top club... or even Man Utd 🙂

He cost 21m last year and 60 is a stupid fee obviously - just a price that means, we don't want to sell.

      If you mean
      Jota + 4.5def
      Or
      VVD + 4.5fwd

It depends how good your bench is. If the counterweight is bench 3 spot rotting away, I’d go for VVD. If he’s bench 1, I’d got Jota.

All depends on the rest of the squad and how flexible it is to change when there’s a bandwagon to get on or a “must have” for a four week period or a one game ban/injury/City away game to one of your players

Read somewhere that Ole has said that he expect Sanchez to score +20 goals if he can find form. But in order to find form, surely he has to start him? I have Greenwood as "cover". I do know Martial and James is in contention too

    RMT

    Ryan
    Robertson TAA Laporte Digne
    Salah (C) Sterling Siggy Sanchez
    King DCL

    Subs: Button Greenwood Kelly Dendoncker

DCL weak spot, but at 6 mil and starting he is worth a punt surely.

Ole was just talking him up, he's not gonna say he's completely useless when asked about him, is he? Do you think he can score 20+ goals from what you've seen since he signed for Utd? He can barely control a ball. Apparently we were offering him to anyone that would listen at the start of the summer but there aren't any takers because of his ridiculous wage.
