Joelinton could fill attacking void at Newcastle in 2019/20

Newcastle United have smashed their transfer record to secure the signing of Joelinton (£6.0m) from Hoffenheim for a reported £40m fee.

The Brazilian forward, 22, arrives on Tyneside amidst a period of considerable upheaval for the Magpies, with the recent departure of former manager Rafael Benitez alongside last season’s top-scorer Ayoze Perez’s (£6.5m) move to Leicester City and the transfer of Salomon Rondon to Benitez’s new club, Dalian Yifang.

Having scored 11 goals in 35 games for Hoffenheim in 2018/19, Newcastle will be hoping that the former Brazil Under-17 international can translate his promising form into the club’s upcoming Premier League campaign, with their first test coming against Arsenal on August 10th.

Priced at £6.0m in Fantasy Premier League, Joelinton joins a growing list of similarly priced strikers whose credentials will come under further scrutiny in the opening Gameweeks, as managers seek to identify the best value-for-money forwards in the initial stages of the 2019/20 campaign.

The striker’s arrival at St James’ Park coincides with the recent appointment of Steve Bruce as manager, and the veteran coach will be hoping that the 22-year-old can provide goalscoring impetus to a team that is almost certainly set to be involved in a relegation dogfight for their Premier League status in the upcoming campaign.

Upon signing for Newcastle, Joelinton said:

“I know it’s a big club, with massive history here in England and around the world. I’ve followed the Premier League from Brazil since I was little and know about the huge tradition of the club and how passionate the fans are. I’m passionate about the game. I bring a lot of emotion on to the pitch. I’ll never being lacking in desire and dedication. I like playing football and like to enjoy myself on the pitch. I hope to have a great career here. As I said before I’m really happy and hope to bring a lot of joy to the fans and everybody involved with the football club.”

Steve Bruce also spoke enthusiastically after Joelinton’s arrival was confirmed:

“The kid’s got an exciting time ahead of him. He’s a smashing young player and we’re obviously delighted to get him. It’s been going on for a little bit now, so to get him is great for everybody. He’s got everything that a modern-day player wants. He’s big, strong and athletic, and of course, he’s got age on his side too which is vitally important. He’s learned the history and wanted it (the number nine shirt), and that’s always a big shirt to fill. But in his eyes, it was ‘bring it on – it’s what I’m here for’. He’s risen to that challenge, and I’m sure he will be a big, big favourite of the supporters. He’s got an incredible work-rate about him, he’s got a really good humility about him, and all the attributes a top striker needs.”

The History and Statistics

Joelinton in action for Hoffenheim in the Champions League

For any 22-year-old striker to command a £40m fee, they are likely to be a player with considerable promise and potential. Joelinton is no exception in this regard, yet the Brazilian has experienced a rapid rise from the realms of South America to Europe’s most competitive leagues in just five seasons.

Having progressed through the ranks at his boyhood club Sport Recife in Brazil, Joelinton was given his debut at the age of 17, coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 away win against city rivals Santa Cruz.

The striker made a total of 12 senior appearances for Sport Recife, scoring on three occasions, but this was enough for Hoffenheim to make their move as the Bundesliga outfit secured the Brazilian’s signature in 2015 on a five-year contract.

Joelinton’s initial spell in Germany was disappointing for the forward, as he made just one appearance for the club as a last-minute substitute in the 2015/16 campaign. This led to Hoffenheim sanctioning a loan move to Austrian Bundesliga outfit Rapid Wien, who Joelinton joined on a two-year loan at the start of the 2015/16 season.

The Brazilian was finally given his opportunity in Europe and gradually began to find his feet. Across 60 appearances for Rapid Wien, Joelinton scored on 15 occasions as well as playing in all 10 of the club’s Europa League matches in the 2016/17 season. He returned to Hoffenheim following the expiration of his loan deal in Austria, and began life back in Germany in emphatic fashion.

After being given his first start in a DFB-Pokal cup match at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Joelinton scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory and proceeded to feature prominently for Hoffenheim throughout the 2018/19 campaign, including scoring a last-minute equaliser in a Champions League group game against Lyon.

After finishing the season with 11 goals in 35 games, it is Newcastle United who have made their move to sign this exciting, attacking prospect who arrives in the Premier League with a point to prove to those who may doubt the large fee he has commanded.

Whilst the club’s record signing of Joelinton is largely influenced by the club’s sale of last season’s top-scorer Ayoze Perez for a reported £30m, owner Mike Ashley has moved to fill a goalscoring void left by him, and there is every chance that this Brazilian forward could shine for the Magpies if he is capable of replicating his promising form in the Premier League.

The Prospects

Joelinton’s arrival on Tyneside will inevitably be met with a sense of scepticism given the Brazilian’s £40m price-tag, but his underlying statistics suggest this could be a player capable of scoring goals in England’s top flight.

The 22-year-old ranked top for average minutes per shot compared to five of Newcastle’s main attacking assets from 2018/19, whilst also having a superior average minutes per shot on target.

Newcastle’s other attacking outlets such as Miguel Almiron (£6.0m) and Christian Atsu (£5.5m) experienced difficult seasons in 2018/19, and there is certainly scope for Joelinton to provide impetus and inspiration to this squad who, at times, seemed deflated and devoid of confidence in Benitez’s final season in charge at the club.

Given the departure of Perez to Leicester City and the 12 Premier League goals scored by the Spaniard, expectation will naturally gravitate towards Joelinton to fill this goalscoring void vacated by Perez, especially given the departure of Rondon to China too

The Brazilian also ranks highly for minutes per key pass, second to only Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m) who is not a direct striker but represents a part of Newcastle’s attacking options, outlining how the forward could contribute to the Magpies’ goalscoring efforts with the addition of assists, suggesting the ability to secure a spread of Fantasy points in 2019/20.

The recently departed Rondon was a huge asset for Newcastle in Benitez’s final season in charge, and it is no surprise that the Spaniard has taken the forward with him to China. The Venezuelan’s exceptional average minutes per shot in the box is something that no Newcastle forward or Joelinton came close to matching in 2018/19, suggesting that there is certainly room for the Magpies’ new signing to improve.

The usual caveat applies that these figures for Joelinton were recorded in the Bundesliga, so it is, of course, possible that he may take some time to adapt.

This pressure and the wider context in which Joelinton’s arrival on Tyneside can be placed is pivotal in assessing if the Brazilian will shine or falter for Bruce and Newcastle. After departing his native Brazil for the first time and arriving in Germany, Hoffenheim did not deem the striker to be capable of contributing to their Bundesliga campaign.

Whether this was the initial plan or a judgement made on the basis of the Brazilian’s adaptation to life in Germany is unclear, but arriving in a new country to play in a new domestic league yet again comes with a period of adaptation, and on the basis of Joelinton’s track-record it is unclear if the 22-year-old will excel for the Magpies in 2019/20 or not.

Furthermore, Newcastle’s opening fixtures are once again some of the most difficult for any team in the division.

The opening day sees Arsenal travel to St James’ Park, followed by away trips to Tottenham and Liverpool within the next four Gameweeks. There are appealing games against Norwich (away) and Watford (home) sandwiched in-between, but for any Fantasy manager to back a club such as Newcastle amidst a period of such instability both on and off the field, the fixtures would have to be exceptional.

The Magpies’ opening nine games see them take on five of last year’s top-six, and this simply represents a huge red-flag for any manager thinking of backing and selecting Newcastle’s assets.

Joelinton certainly has the potential to be one of 2019/20’s biggest surprise packages in the Premier League given promising underlying data, but with a transition from Germany to England, a £40m price-tag and his arrival at a club who are stuck amidst a turbulent battle of ownership off the field, and with recruitment problems on it, the Brazilian firmly falls in the category of ‘one-to-watch’ owing to Newcastle’s extremely unattractive fixtures at the start of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

Following on from my Home away analysis yesterday, I will give a short analysis on fpl performance of players vs. Top six (TS) and Rest of Table (ROT) . List has been filtered for at least 5 games against TS and at least 8 games against ROT.

            1. On average players perform +1.16 pps (Points per start where start is >55mins played) vs ROT. 203 players had a better performance vs. ROT while only 39 players had a worse performance
            2. Out of the 10 highest PPS scorers in the game only Aguero performs worse vs. ROT at -0.22. Sterling is second at +1.76. Others - Salah (+3.83), Kane (+2.5), Auba (+2.37), Trent (+4.38), Robertson (+2.38), Son (+4.38).
            3. Goal Keepers avg. +1.02, Defenders +1.36, Mids +1.07, Forwards +1.15. (These numbers are slightly approximate, as I had to manually enter player positions and I did it just by looking at the name and I didn't recognize all the players)
            4. Some random/interesting players/observations - Vardy (+1.13), Jiminez (-1.33), Firmnio (-1.11), Wilson (+3.26), Fraser (+3.11), Deulofeu (+4.11). Just one mid in the top 10 most negative deviations vs. ROT while 6 mids in top 10 most positive deviations vs. ROT. Defenders feature heavily on both ends of the scale.

Insights/Interpretation - +1.16 avg. performance vs. ROT means fixtures indeed are very important. About 83% of players performed better vs. ROT. So betting on form over fixtures may be very risky. The highest scoring players also tend to have higher deviations in absolute terms. Goalkeepers surprisingly also performed significantly better against poorer opposition in 2018-19 contrary to popular thinking. While their deviations were the lowest that can be partially explained through lower overall pps. Defenders show the biggest difference in performance but that is expected as not only do they get more chance of clean sheets but also less chances of minus points.

Conclusion - Using Transfers to avoid bad fixtures seems entirely justified and a good use of transfers. Transferring one big player out for another in the same position makes a lot of sense as their performances tend to deviate more, however options are also limited and unless its a straight swap it will not be justified. Plus bigger teams tend to have smaller runs of poor fixtures as they themselves are part of the top six (so one less team to count) and they may perform better against 7-10th placed teams than the others although I have not analysed that yet.

Vaguely surprised to see Kun and Sterling right up there. But I suppose City just scored more evenly over the season and big 6 oppo was less relevant.

I’m guessing also they missed a disproportionate number of bottom 14 matches.

Aguero - 9/10 starts vs. TS, 21/28 vs. ROT
Sterling - 10/10 starts vs. TS, 21/28 vs. ROT

Conclusion - If Pep stops resting the big players against the poorer teams they will score much better in fpl.

                  Thank you.

Thought as much - it makes Sterling especially a really troublesome asset imo. The run from 3 onwards being a case in point. He’s almost guaranteed to miss one really plum fixture - tricky on a week 1 budget.

Really happy to see confirmation of the idea that premium transfers could be optimal transfers. Probably won’t work out of course but that’s my intended strategy this time.

One caveat is that the replacement also has to be at a similar level or just as good. So if you have both Salah and Sterling, who do you replace them with? Of course Aguero to Auba to Kane is a more viable strategy but they do score less than Salah / Sterling overall.

I’m very seriously considering Kane Auba to start the first 2. That gives 2 mill more elsewhere - significant surely. And looking at combined fixtures I’m not seeing much of a difference in likely returns. Auba feels much the best captain in week 2 and there’s a switch to Sterling in 3.

How Sterling goes up top is what I’m monitoring most.

That's the problem. If the replacement is a downgrade, then form may count for more than fixtures in some cases - but this varies from player to player.

For example, Sterling averaged 6.1ppg against the top six last season (7.4ppg when at home and 4.8ppg away) and 7.2ppg against ROT. Very few replacements would score as well against ROT as Sterling did against the top six, so probably not worth replacing him.

On the other hand, Salah averaged 4.1ppg against the top six (6.0ppg at home but only 2.2ppg away), so you could even consider benching him for away matches against top six opposition.

Agree with that except the benching Salah part. Psychologically it would be very difficult to do. Plus if you already have Liverpool defenders then they would be more likely options to be benched.

Personally the more I think about, the more I feel it is better to reserve transfers for mid priced players as they usually have very similar replacements (if not better ones) and you have a wider selection of teams to pick from for long runs of fixtures without facing top six.

The Liverpool defenders actually had slightly better ppgs than Salah in away matches against the top six (TAA 2.8, Robertson 3.8, VVD 2.8).

Difficult to bench top players like Salah, but I did successfully bench Aguero in GW8 last season when he was away against Liverpool - he received a yellow card and scored 1 point.

I agree that it is probably better to reserve transfers for mid-priced players or for when players are about to miss a few matches.

There are also some difficult factors and caveats to consider. ManU defence overall wasn't TS last year, not even top10. At least if goals conceded is used to determine this. Arsenal was 4th best home but 15th away. New, Wol and Eve were TS teams in away matches.

Yes, the top six group and the bottom 14 group is not homogeneous. So you do have to adjust for that.

I would quite like to see this done but with Top Four, Next 8 and Bottom 8 - I feel like someone like Siggy only really scores well against the Bottom 8 and really needs to be transferred in at the right time.

I give those 3 distinctions because, bar Newcastle, the ability to defend in each category changes quite a lot and Arsenal/United don't deserve to be in with the top 4 imo

Triple up on Bournemouth is maybe overkill. I'd go A but do King > another 6.5 or 6.0 (Wesley, Deulofeu?)

              Otherwise looks good!

There are so many good striker options at 7 and under this season, very tempted with 4-3-3? Leave 0.5itb too.

            Ederson
            TAA VVD Laporte Digne

They look the best but both come with hefty question marks.

Jota has an insane goal involvement and is my pick but he got pulled a lot last time just as Kun did. There’s also EL of course and a quite possible new Wolves striker to confuse things.

Deu was super explosive but really only hit the minnows and didn’t get that many games. If he’s nailed he could become dynamite. Watford look a nicely settled side and from memory they have the trick of starting strongly.

Zaha to Everton is an interesting one, but is it going to happen? Surely Arsenal will pay up eventually and that would be his preferred choice. At Everton though presumably as an OOP striker would make him almost essential at 7M assuming

            Hello,

RMT Please! I quite like it, other than McArthur sat in the middle of the pitch costing me points.

            Ryan
            TAA, Robbo, Laporte, Dinge
Salah, Sterling, Perez, McArthur (or some other 5.5)
            King, Vardy

I don't think you need double City def from the start. You can drop Zinchenko or downgrade Ed to 4.5 and then get Laporte

              Nothing wrong with the strikers

                Thanks.

I’ve been swapping in and out Ryan and Laporte for ederson and Zinchenko every day and cant settle.

If Zinchenko gets his place then 2 city defenders will get points.

I calculate 4.5 keeper will max out at 130ish over the season so a 5.5 defender that more would be worth the investment.

But then again it call all change. Lol

Good, very solid. Long term 6.5 defenders will get more points than 6.5 strikers, so you're good to go big at the back.

            Chelsea.

I know its unknown as to how Lampard is going to set them up given the inclusion of the youth in Frankies plans.

The bridge is still a fortress and for 6.0 you can take your pick from defenders with the option of emerson at 5.5.

If there was a nailed striker he'd be in my starting XI without a shadow of a doubt - a steal at 7.0 for a team that finished top 3.

Such a dilemma but something that will pass the time at work this morning.

Week 2 captaincy option makes Auba really really tempting for me. I think it depends on how you read the away match to Newcastle. Are Toon going to be a mess first up?

I have a hedge draft with Laca and Kane. If Toon are a mess Laca should join in the party. But he feels much less convincing to me for the home game against Burnley.

Is having NO Man City a "thing" or a dumb move?

Currently have Walker in defense, but considering Azpilicueta as an alternative.
Midfield is Salah over Sterling and Siggurdson over De Bruyne (and funds spread elsewhere)

"Dumb" would be harsh, but I think not having any attacking players from one of the two main teams realistically fighting out for the title is a strange choice.

I tried something a little different
Having only few intersting options upfront, I went to this with a stronger back :

Pope - Ryan (could become Heton if he goes to Villa)
Azpilicueta - Robertson - Laporte - Dunk (if he goes to leicester) - 4.5 (Holding when fit)
Sterling - Salah - Norwood - Felipe Anderson - Perez (or Tielemans, still monitorig)
Vardy - Calvert Lewin (if no other forward incoming) - Greenwood

Rather have Wesley or Ings over DCL...any 6.0 striker really 🙂

Like the rest though, might go with a different 4.5 defender over Holding

              I'm a 5-at-the-back guy as there's value there.

Goalkeeper - don't rotate, it never goes well. Choose one and a 4m benchie.
              Back 5 - fine
              Midfield 5 - fine
Forwards - Vardy - yes, Greenwood - lovely benchie.
DCL - imo, no. Most weeks he'll just get you 2 points. With the0.5 saved on your keeper, get a 6.5 striker who will score.
Options include Jota, King, Deeney, Deulofeu.

Everton 60M bid for Zaha. If that deal is done, what will you do in what concerns Everton attacking assets?

Going for Zaha? Siggy’s appeal increases / decreases?

            Cheers!

probably go for Zaha as only Everton attack (mainly due to his price and possible OOP)

Still can't see it happening though

That are the main advantages going for Zaha in fact - will surely be nailed, probably OOP and 1M cheaper than Siggy and Rich. Seems a very viable option to have Everton’s attacking assets.

But yeah, it is not yet a done deal ahah

Zaha has a poor record at Selhurst!!!!!

Really can’t see this happening. Everton may be a bigger club but recent record has them miles away from CL - just 5 points better than Palace in each of the last 2 seasons. A big pay packet won’t sway him given his current wages. He wants the big time.

              I'd see it like this:

              DCL
Zaha or Bernard / Siggy / Richarlison
              Idrissa or Delph / Gomez
Digne / Mina or (Zouma) / Keane / Coleman
              Pickford

Don't think Siggurdsson's position is under threat. Zaha could also play up front.

countless weeks of hand ringing and picking new teams on an hourly basis will drive you to distraction - don’t sweat over your team selection, pick a team now, tinker for a few hours, let it be.

Come back a few days before the season starts and pick it again .... you know that you will never get those lost weeks of your life back 😉

Mignolet would be a good signing for you guys. Admittedly he does make a howler or two a season, but he has the sort of personality and experience you need when playing in the PL.

I'd love to see Mignolet back in a bottom half side. Would be nice to see him do well, plus he'd rack up the save points for FPL.

I know people say 5 at the back is a Neddy no no, but I quite like this team to kick off with.

            Ederson
            Wan-Bissaka, Coleman, TAA, VVD, Zinchenko
            Salah, Sterling, Fraser
            Wilson, Jota

Looks good - just can't see the appeal in AWB. United haven't kept a clean sheet since February, lost Herrera etc. If it was me, I'd consider downgrading to a 4.5, which enables you to turn Zinchenko > Laporte.

6m keeper with minimal saves? Liverpool defence is probably better anyway, Zinchenko is cheaper and you can save 1.5m on a cheap keeper

There are a few GK's who are better VFM than Ederson. As you say, minimal saves and not many bonus points either.

Likes of Pickford and Fabianski get you more points per million.

Agreed. Plus evert season there's one sub 5 keeper who scored 150 points.. And usually after a few games it becomes pretty obvious who it will be. If not then owning 3 sub 5.0 keepers for good fixture runs over a season(since we basically have 3 WCs) should score 140 to 150 too. Ederson will score 160 to 170 but not sure if that's worth the premium.

And who is this year's sub-5 keeper? We don't know, so you'd have to jump aboard bandwagons, using up transfers until you eventually get there. Or you could just start with one of the 2 highest scoring keepers and never have to worry.

Thanks for the replies. I don't really like any of the 4.5 defenders to downgrade Wan-Bissaka to. Ederson will stay and will probably end up moving Zinchenko on, but I think he will start the season.

            AWB, TAA, Walker, Azpi (O'connell)
            Sterling, Silva, Pogba, Jorginho/Dendoncker rotation

Klopp confirmed Firmino, Salah and Alisson will be available for Lyon and Man City, prior to Norwich. I think that should be enough time tbh, considering the fact Klopp rarely ever plays anyone else ahead of them when available.
