Jiménez injury latest as Wolves book long trip ahead of Gameweek 1

Crusaders 1-4 Wolves
(1-6 on aggregate)

Goals: Raúl Jiménez x2 (£7.5m), Ryan Bennett (£5.0m)

Own Goals: Jordan Forsythe

Assists: Diogo Jota x2 (£6.5m), Joao Moutinho x2 (£5.5m)

Wolves’ preparation for Gameweek 1 will now include a 6,000-mile round-trip to Armenia just days before they are scheduled to face Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

Following their 6-1 aggregate victory over Crusaders in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, they will face Pyunik in the third.

They are based in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, roughly 3,000 miles from Wolverhampton.

Progression in European competition will certainly be of great encouragement to Nuno Espirito Santo and his players but it is obviously far from ideal to go through a 3,000-mile journey between a Thursday night match and the opening game of the Premier League on Sunday.

Furthermore, Wolves could potentially be playing either of those games without star striker Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) who sustained an injury on Thursday night.

“We have to be careful to manage the right moments for him to get back in shape and get the full fitness we want. Let’s see, it was his foot, let’s see how it is.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The Mexican Gold Cup winner was Wolves’ star player against Crusaders scoring twice on his first time back in the starting XI since last season.

Before going off with a foot problem in the 55th-minute, Jiménez fired in two fantastic finishes to put the tie beyond Crusaders.

Jota (centre) provided both assists for Jiménez’s goals against Crusaders

For the first goal, he collected a Diogo Jota (£6.5m) cross on the edge of the box and slammed a powerful shot on the swivel low into the bottom corner.

For the second, Jiménez collected a backheel from Jota in a similar position to the first goal and, on the turn, fired the ball into the top corner.

However, whether he will be available for upcoming matches hangs in the balance although next Thursday’s third round first leg in Armenia may provide us with more information on Jiménez’s injury.

If he is unable to play either against Pyunik, Leicester or both then it could mean more game-time for FPL midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m) up-front.

It was the 19-year-old who came on for Jiménez in the 55th minute and who has been deputising for him during pre-season while he was away on international duty and subsequent leave.

As we’ve mentioned before, who stands in for Jiménez, or indeed Jota, up-front long-term probably depends on Matt Doherty (£6.0m) as his continued absence meant another start at right wing-back for Adama Traoré (£5.0m) on Thursday night.

The rest of Wolves’ team remains very similar to what we became used to last season, as Nuno continues to enjoy a settled side.

Rui Patrício (£5.0m) was in goal behind a back-three of Conor Coady (£5.0m), Willy Boly (£5.0m) and Ryan Bennett (£5.0m).

Wolves remain largely a settled side heading into Gameweek 1

The latter was involved at both ends of the pitch inadvertently opening the scoring for Crusaders in the 13th minute.

The centre-back rose highest to meet a cross from the right-wing but headed the ball into his own net.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Bennett made amends as he nodded home a Joao Moutinho‘s (£5.5m) corner.

The Portuguese international sat alongside Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) in midfield and came away with two assists.

The first came for Bennett’s headed effort before it was Moutinho’s cross from deep that was headed into the Crusaders net by defender Jordan Forsythe.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Coady, Boly, Bennett; Jonny, Neves (Saïss 68′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jiménez (Gibbs-White 55′), Jota (Vinagre 68′).

Not sure what the point of having a scale of 1-5 if nothing is down as a 1. Also Everton are now considered as tough a fixture as Man U, Che, Ars and Spurs.

Assuming he played 35 games and hit the ground running/didn't require an acclimatisation period he could get 200 points... 9 of his league 1 goals were pens - will he get pens for arsenal?

If he doesn't hit the ground running and/or needs a period of time to find his feet he'll be 9.0 after a few GW's

Henry took until Christmas to get going - we just don't know how Pepe will do... Very interested to see how Emery fields this front 3 though as a neutral

      1. Ask Yourself
        • 7 Years

He won 6 of the penalties he scored. 13 goals 17 assists in that case. Plus fantasy assists. Also he isn’t Henry. Since him arsenal have welcomed Auba and Laca successfully fresh from Ligue 1, albeit Auba played BL aswell in between

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          4 years, 8 months ago

That doesn't really contradict my point though?

If he doesn't hit the ground running and/or needs a period of time to find his feet he'll be 9.0 after a few GW's

And assuming (a) he played 35 games and (b) hit the ground running/didn't require an acclimatisation period he could get 200 points... Maybe more, maybe less

Lots of ifs, buts, and maybes, as with many new arrivals to the league

So don’t buy anyone new to the league then if that’s your worry? But obviously you will and have done on the last so why is Pepe a special case? Nothing suggests he will be a poor pick

A lot of the time his points actually land. But “new to the league tho” is surely the weakest he’s attempted

Yes but his points are often made up after he has decided if he likes a player or not. Thats why you see weak arguments once hes confronted with stats about players he dont like. Same thing with Auba vs Sterling. He just doesnt like Arsenal assets I guess, which is fair enough.

Come come now children no need to resort to name calling and mud slinging 🙂

It's quite reasonable to suggest that if Pepe doesn't hit the ground running and/or needs a period of time to find his feet he'll be dropped quite fast and vice versa

I know some sensitive skins are thin on FFS - but let's keep the debate focused on the issues at hand lest things get unpleasant 🙂

It’s not about being unpleasant it’s about calling out poo reasoning. I appreciate the work you do but I cannot accept this point at all to be reiterated by loads of others. The strongest case against Pepe is whether he is fit to start the season.

Young master Pepe could of course do well, but there are unfortunately zero guarantees, I find it's better to look at these situations reasonably with eyes wide open & try to detach the emotion

Honestly I think a failure to acknowledge the very real possibility that he may not hit the ground running and/or may need a period of time to acclimatise would be evidence of, with all due respect, being unreasonable (some would say delusional - but that's by the by)

He could also hattrick in GW1 or 2 - who knows...

Regarding Pepe - I have to say I stand by my original points - as with many (most?) players new to the league he is a risk - the decision managers have to make, as always, is obviously is that risk worth taking

I’m just showing how silly that point was.

My question has always been why is Pepe specifically a risky pick for this reason in comparison to another new player to the league. Of the new signings he has the best record and FPL potential. Proposing whether it is a risk worth taking is logic that can be applied to every player in the game I don’t understand what it has to do with Pepe

I know what you intended to do but it just didn't really work as planned unfortunately 🙂

You seem to be fixated on the notion that there is no a risk that Pepe may not be a viable FPL asset, the issue seems to have stirred up quite a strong response so let's go back to basics & try again shall we?

Pepe is joining a new club, in a new league, with a new manager, a new language, a new playing style - this could go on ad infinuem - but you hopefully get my point

He has a 9.5 price tag - an instant disadvantage in terms of who he had to compete with for FPL managers budget

And equally had he scored 40 goals and got 50 assists last season in ligue 1, whilst it would indicate he is undoubtedly a talented footballer (I've already said above he could get 200 points - not many FPL players go there) - it guarantees nothing.

And as I've outlined in my other post below - this is the case for many (most?) new arrivals to the league - including Pepe who was the original subject of the thread 🙂

This is an analysis & observation of some factors - it's not a Pepe witchunt.

HOWEVER, there almost certainly WILL be a Pepe witchunt of possibly epic proportions if he doesn't hit the ground running and /or requires an acclimatisation period - both of which are possibilities unfortunately... As is the possibility of his GW1 hattrick 😉

            2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Yes absolutely - it's not a blanket rule of course and there are always exceptions - but Henderson is a far as I'm currently willing to go with players new to the league, and even then I might go Pope or Heaton

Robinson looks to have potential too though... Is Yarmo still technically 'new'? There could be a time & a place for him this year, it could even be GW1

The Trossards, Wesleys, Cutrones, Keans etc of this world could prove to be super.... As could Pepe... But equally could you really hold it against them if it took them until Christmas to find their feet? If they ever find them that is...

Pepe will have plenty of ownership during the season. It seems right to price him alongside Son and Lacazette. KDB seems the best option long term as hes probably slightly undepriced at 9.5

      Digne into Coleman
      Laporte into Walker
And you have exta 1M to upgrade Smith (for example)

      solid team
I was looking at something similar but i think ur team looks better got to compromise certain spots to fit sterling salah and kane in.

Whats the bournemouth full back situation looking like is A. Smith nailed and who's getting the LB spot ?

good team w kane/salah/sterling! personally, think u should sacrifice one of them tough. pope, smith, perez, barkley and king, although good punts, they are punts, so..

No. According to a United ITK that said the same about James and AWB moves, the deal has been done for some time. The behind the scenes administration is the delay.

If its really true that Leicester have upped their initial price from 80m to 85m + addons just to squeeze United for even more then I can see it being true that hes frustrated. Would be quite ridiculous if the deal falls through because Leicester out of nowhere increase their valuation as they have their initial price matched.

no salah is just a bit too much of a gamble. norwich at home as the reigning cl winners? in fear of suarez-esque vibes i would just have him from the start.

also, mane has yet to come back to training so as of now i would wait with him

Torn between rotating two 4.5 defenders and rotating a single 4.5 defender and Jorginho. It would mean my fifth defender drops to 4 million.

I wouldn't worry too much about having bench depth beyond one if you have a reasonably nailed XI. A 4.0 such as Rico or Lunstram might just get a few starts too.

Rico has every chance to make himself the established left back for Bournemouth this season, does he not?
Was highly rated in Spain when he first signed, what is there to suggest an inexperienced Kelly automatically comes in when he is fit?
Call me crazy but I think he and Gibson could be a good rotating pair, that allows you to spend the cash elsewhere.

    1. the vanisher
      • 6 Years

he is a 50/50 with Kelly. the thing is they have about the same minutes in pre-season and no indication who will start the season so a bit of a risk. but if he starts and does well he should keep his spot

Mo Salah came in from Roma 0.5M cheaper than Pepe off the back of a 15G 13A season. Perhaps 9.0M would be fair for Pepe but he will score goals and he will get assists playing with Laca and Auba.

    1. - Z -
      • 4 Years

I have alrdy told that real price should be 8.5- 9.
Laka was 9.5 in his 1st season, but he was the only attacking potential player...now you have Auba and Laka + Pepe
      Tho....Pepe is real deal...exelent player

You both just choose one player (Salah and lacazette) and decide their performance should decide his price

  27. Teror

    4 years, 8 months ago

I'm starting to think Wilson is a bad buy at 8.0. His price per points is identical to Jota, Delo & Wood and last season was a freak season for him. You can't say you know what you're going to get in the way that you do with Vardy. There's also his fitness issues. Thinking I might be better off going with two 4.5s and spending the money in midfield instead.
