Jiménez injury latest as Wolves book long trip ahead of Gameweek 1

Crusaders 1-4 Wolves
(1-6 on aggregate)

Goals: Raúl Jiménez x2 (£7.5m), Ryan Bennett (£5.0m)

Own Goals: Jordan Forsythe

Assists: Diogo Jota x2 (£6.5m), Joao Moutinho x2 (£5.5m)

Wolves’ preparation for Gameweek 1 will now include a 6,000-mile round-trip to Armenia just days before they are scheduled to face Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

Following their 6-1 aggregate victory over Crusaders in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, they will face Pyunik in the third.

They are based in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, roughly 3,000 miles from Wolverhampton.

Progression in European competition will certainly be of great encouragement to Nuno Espirito Santo and his players but it is obviously far from ideal to go through a 3,000-mile journey between a Thursday night match and the opening game of the Premier League on Sunday.

Furthermore, Wolves could potentially be playing either of those games without star striker Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) who sustained an injury on Thursday night.

“We have to be careful to manage the right moments for him to get back in shape and get the full fitness we want. Let’s see, it was his foot, let’s see how it is.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The Mexican Gold Cup winner was Wolves’ star player against Crusaders scoring twice on his first time back in the starting XI since last season.

Before going off with a foot problem in the 55th-minute, Jiménez fired in two fantastic finishes to put the tie beyond Crusaders.

Jota (centre) provided both assists for Jiménez’s goals against Crusaders

For the first goal, he collected a Diogo Jota (£6.5m) cross on the edge of the box and slammed a powerful shot on the swivel low into the bottom corner.

For the second, Jiménez collected a backheel from Jota in a similar position to the first goal and, on the turn, fired the ball into the top corner.

However, whether he will be available for upcoming matches hangs in the balance although next Thursday’s third round first leg in Armenia may provide us with more information on Jiménez’s injury.

If he is unable to play either against Pyunik, Leicester or both then it could mean more game-time for FPL midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m) up-front.

It was the 19-year-old who came on for Jiménez in the 55th minute and who has been deputising for him during pre-season while he was away on international duty and subsequent leave.

As we’ve mentioned before, who stands in for Jiménez, or indeed Jota, up-front long-term probably depends on Matt Doherty (£6.0m) as his continued absence meant another start at right wing-back for Adama Traoré (£5.0m) on Thursday night.

The rest of Wolves’ team remains very similar to what we became used to last season, as Nuno continues to enjoy a settled side.

Rui Patrício (£5.0m) was in goal behind a back-three of Conor Coady (£5.0m), Willy Boly (£5.0m) and Ryan Bennett (£5.0m).

Wolves remain largely a settled side heading into Gameweek 1

The latter was involved at both ends of the pitch inadvertently opening the scoring for Crusaders in the 13th minute.

The centre-back rose highest to meet a cross from the right-wing but headed the ball into his own net.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Bennett made amends as he nodded home a Joao Moutinho‘s (£5.5m) corner.

The Portuguese international sat alongside Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) in midfield and came away with two assists.

The first came for Bennett’s headed effort before it was Moutinho’s cross from deep that was headed into the Crusaders net by defender Jordan Forsythe.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Coady, Boly, Bennett; Jonny, Neves (Saïss 68′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jiménez (Gibbs-White 55′), Jota (Vinagre 68′).

Thats the thing.. i am trying to free up as much cash as possible so I can play 3-5-2 or 3-4-3.. I already have 3 premium defenders.. but you never know when you need that 4.0 to step up haha

None are nailed but Lundstram and Kelly have the highest likelihood of getting some minutes at least. Maybe Rico also

    3. Moxon
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

Lloyd Kelly is unlikely to start the season for Bournemouth due to an ankle ligament injury so Rico has a chance to prove himself. That being said I'm going with Rico and Lundstram as they rotate excellently

That’s interesting because he has been out back up full back on either side filling in u til Fredericks returns from injury. Fredericks to assessed ahead of tomorrow’s friendly. Johnson has been really poor last few friendlies I would expect Zabaleta to play especially as it’s city

Thanks for the info, I didn't actually watch any of their games but was rather looking at the spreadsheets... Guess its lundstram and Rico for now

            • 7 Years
            4 years, 8 months ago

They’d be my picks. However I think Lundstram will only play in the tougher games where wilder opts for a 532 with an extra DM opposed to the usual 5212. Other minutes he gets will probably be being subbed on when they are leading to replace an attacker. Rico the most likely but it looks like we won’t get a certain 4m defender this year

Warming up to the idea to downgrade Zinchenko to £4.5, Jota to £6.0 (Wesley?) or Fraser to £6.0 mid from the off, to accomodate either of Kane/Auba/KDB. Thinking City may concede in a few of the first matches, after which Zinch is a rotation risk anyway.
Would mean either of four combos (first without 3rd big hitter)

    A) Wilson Fraser Jota Zinch (current base case team)
    B) Auba Robinson/£6.0 King £4.5 def
    C) Kane Fraser Wesley/£6.0 £4.5 def
    D) Wilson Robinson/£6.0 King £4.5 def

Yeah I'm still not sure on Tammy, but he's looked solid preseason, and looks to be first choice.
Targett was just a 4.5 to fill the space, is there a better 4.5 villa option for you?

    Pope (Button)
    TAA, VVD, Walker, Rico (Coleman)
    Salah, Sterling, Siggy, Fraser, Perez
    King (Greenwood, Wickham)

This leaves 0,5 ITB to do Rico —> Diop/Guilbert/Bandwagon after GW1, so I can rotate between 9/10 strong def/mid options.

King will also be replaced early. Am monitoring Adams, Wesley and the (even) cheaper options.

Premium striker goes boom you're carving up your team. Don't rate King or Bournemouth fixtures either

That’s what 2FT or an early WC is for. Could easily downgrade Salah, Sterling or even Siggy to a premium forward.

Hi, could i get some RMT advice on my team please.

    Ederson (4.0)
AWB Digne TAA VanDijk (Lundstrom 4.0))
    Salah Perez B.Silva Fraser (Hayden/4.5)
    Kane Wood (4.5)

Is it too risky to have 2 Liverpool and 2 Everton defenders instead of AWB? Fixtures through first 6-8 games means could be plenty of clean sheets and give me a great start?
Is it better to have a 4.5 goalkeeper and therefore either have a 6.0 striker or midfielder?

Fine, I'll say it. I had no idea where Armenia was. I thought it was way closer than 3000 miles.
