Jiménez injury latest as Wolves book long trip ahead of Gameweek 1

Crusaders 1-4 Wolves
(1-6 on aggregate)

Goals: Raúl Jiménez x2 (£7.5m), Ryan Bennett (£5.0m)

Own Goals: Jordan Forsythe

Assists: Diogo Jota x2 (£6.5m), Joao Moutinho x2 (£5.5m)

Wolves’ preparation for Gameweek 1 will now include a 6,000-mile round-trip to Armenia just days before they are scheduled to face Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

Following their 6-1 aggregate victory over Crusaders in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, they will face Pyunik in the third.

They are based in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, roughly 3,000 miles from Wolverhampton.

Progression in European competition will certainly be of great encouragement to Nuno Espirito Santo and his players but it is obviously far from ideal to go through a 3,000-mile journey between a Thursday night match and the opening game of the Premier League on Sunday.

Furthermore, Wolves could potentially be playing either of those games without star striker Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) who sustained an injury on Thursday night.

“We have to be careful to manage the right moments for him to get back in shape and get the full fitness we want. Let’s see, it was his foot, let’s see how it is.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The Mexican Gold Cup winner was Wolves’ star player against Crusaders scoring twice on his first time back in the starting XI since last season.

Before going off with a foot problem in the 55th-minute, Jiménez fired in two fantastic finishes to put the tie beyond Crusaders.

Jota (centre) provided both assists for Jiménez’s goals against Crusaders

For the first goal, he collected a Diogo Jota (£6.5m) cross on the edge of the box and slammed a powerful shot on the swivel low into the bottom corner.

For the second, Jiménez collected a backheel from Jota in a similar position to the first goal and, on the turn, fired the ball into the top corner.

However, whether he will be available for upcoming matches hangs in the balance although next Thursday’s third round first leg in Armenia may provide us with more information on Jiménez’s injury.

If he is unable to play either against Pyunik, Leicester or both then it could mean more game-time for FPL midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m) up-front.

It was the 19-year-old who came on for Jiménez in the 55th minute and who has been deputising for him during pre-season while he was away on international duty and subsequent leave.

As we’ve mentioned before, who stands in for Jiménez, or indeed Jota, up-front long-term probably depends on Matt Doherty (£6.0m) as his continued absence meant another start at right wing-back for Adama Traoré (£5.0m) on Thursday night.

The rest of Wolves’ team remains very similar to what we became used to last season, as Nuno continues to enjoy a settled side.

Rui Patrício (£5.0m) was in goal behind a back-three of Conor Coady (£5.0m), Willy Boly (£5.0m) and Ryan Bennett (£5.0m).

Wolves remain largely a settled side heading into Gameweek 1

The latter was involved at both ends of the pitch inadvertently opening the scoring for Crusaders in the 13th minute.

The centre-back rose highest to meet a cross from the right-wing but headed the ball into his own net.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Bennett made amends as he nodded home a Joao Moutinho‘s (£5.5m) corner.

The Portuguese international sat alongside Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) in midfield and came away with two assists.

The first came for Bennett’s headed effort before it was Moutinho’s cross from deep that was headed into the Crusaders net by defender Jordan Forsythe.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Coady, Boly, Bennett; Jonny, Neves (Saïss 68′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jiménez (Gibbs-White 55′), Jota (Vinagre 68′).

Has anyone done any player by player analysis on how they perform against the big 6 vs non-big 6 teams?

i.e. who is a "flat track bully" versus not

Would be interesting to find out if what is commonly bounced around on here about these types of players is actually true or not? Also, might give an indication of which players we should worry about rotating or not

I like it, good to see some new (ish) names included, Chilwell and Lacazette aren't mentioned much round these parts but I see the appeal.

All I'd say is be careful with the 4-5-1, if Lacazette misses a game there is a real chance you're down to 10 men.

Good advice this regarding Laca. You should not play 4-5-1 with a rotation risk solo striker and no bench. I think Laca is going to play but its an unnecessary risk. Changing Barkley to someone like Wesley would fix the problem

Goalkeepers follow a different logic to defenders. Historically cheap GKs offer the best value. With defenders its the opposite with premiums being the best value.

Almost all teams are ignoring premium forwards.. I am sure Kane and Aubameyang should at least be contemplated... Aubameyang already gets a lot of chances even in tight games.. I am sure he'll get even more now that Pepe has come into the scene...

I started my drafts heavy at the back, but I've reverted to a 3-5-2 with Kane up top. I know my game, and it's just a matter of time before I shift the funds to the attack.

I've just ditched Greenwood (yuck) for an actual playing front 3 and feel much better about it.

Always want at least 1 playing sub, and much easier to find a decent 4 or 4.5 defender than a striker

      1. Pompel
        • 10 Years

Thing is , the extra cost to upgrade Greenwood to a reasonably nailed forward is £1.5, while upgrading your £4.0 defender to a playing defender costs you £0.5

          • 13 Years

Agreed - but there's no doubt going to be strikers that start firing and you will want to get - very little chance we'll be scrambling for 4.5 defenders.

I just worry that a 4.5 striker will sit and rot and lose value on your bench....until you inevitably shift him in a 2 transfer move

Hard to get Kane and Auba in alongside a key Liv attacker AND key Man C attacker AND a good defender or two.

I've tried to work with Salah/Sterling/Kane and the rest of the team is a bit iffy at best

He looks a lot more likely to start then those you mentioned.

Lampard seems to favour 4-2-3-1 and it's looking like him or Mount for the number 10 spot. Although little worried that Kova and Willian are lurking too

Think going to double up KDB with Sterling as gives easy route to likes of Son and Pepe if firing or down to a 7/7.5 m mid to get on any form striker. (KWP to Zouma depending on whether likely to start and if still injured Pope to Heaton)

If we’re going to see an increased focus on penalty box behaviour then should we consider Duffy as a genuine option? One of the most dangerous players in the box from set pieces, often targeted in terms of blocks and shirt pulling... will this either, allow Duffy more freedom in the box or generate more penalties for Brighton perhaps?

Well not really. Duffy got 25 more points than Dunk last season anyway and my post is suggesting he might get even more points due to his penalty box involvement and the greater use of Var to scrutinise congested penalty areas.

Lamela has a very good GW1 fixture... and has been in great form preseason. Prob change after GW2 or 3

    A) Ake, Salah, Greenwood
    B) Zinchenko, KDB, Deulofeu

I like that B gives me flexibility of another regular playing point scorer... but means I don't have Salah if he fires

      A, as I don’t fancy KdB

Stays healthy, best midfielder in the league. I’ll see how Salah/KDB go in Community Shield

Are you benching one of these?

Greenwood would be bench. But means Dendoncker or Lundstram/Diop must start each week.

Deulo gives a bit of reliable flexibility. It makes sense to me but then I see Salah not in my team...

Then A slightly. That said I do think KDB will be a good pick.

Look at the article image... Wolves players look tired already

Europa League really isn't a good thing if your squad isn't deep enough

If woodman is flagged can he still drop in price? If I leave him in my team as a non playing 4.0, will he at least maintain value?
