Everton blank again as Villa finish pre-season campaign with three-goal win

Fantasy Premier League managers got their final look at Everton and Aston Villa ahead of the new campaign on Saturday.

The two clubs have now completed their pre-season schedules and have only training sessions left to prepare them for Gameweek 1.

There was plenty for Fantasy managers to digest from Everton and Villa’s matches.

The Toffees remain rather goal-shy as they head towards a meeting with Crystal Palace while Dean Smith’s newly-promoted side are looking dangerous.

Werder Bremen 0-0 Everton

Goals: None

Assists: None

Everton highlighted their need for offensive reinforcements once again as they drew 0-0 with Werder Bremen on Saturday afternoon.

In seven pre-season matches, the Toffees found the net just three times, their goals coming against Kariobangi Sharks, Monaco and Mainz.

In total, Everton drew four blanks during the summer in encounters with FC Sion, Wigan Athletic, Sevilla and now Bremen.

As has been reported before, Marco Silva’s men have not been short of their key players this summer, with all but Richarlison (£8.0m) available for most of their friendlies.

The Brazilian finally made his first start of the pre-season on Saturday afternoon but could not spark the Everton attack into immediate life.

Despite missing nearly all of pre-season training after returning from international leave in the wake of winning the Copa America, Richarlison still offered something against Werder Bremen.

He was stationed on the right flank of attacking midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation and lasted 45 minutes before being replaced by Theo Walcott (£6.5m) at half-time.

Richarlison was involved in one of Everton’s early chances, using his strength to fire off an effort, saved by the goalkeeper, only for Bernard (£6.5m) to blast high over the crossbar.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.0m) also had a first-half chance that he could not convert and it appears very likely that he will lose his place to Moise Kean if his arrival is confirmed in time to play in Gameweek 1.

Walcott was denied twice in the second half while Lucas Digne (£6.0m) and André Gomes (£5.5m) also had chances to score.

Despite Everton’s struggles going forward, it must be said that they have still performed well at the back during pre-season.

This is made all the more impressive that neither Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) or Idrissa Gueye, two cornerstones of last season’s defensive success, were not involved at all.

Marco Silva went with the first-choice back-four against Bremen, Michael Keane (£5.5m) and Yerry Mina (£5.5m) flanked by Digne and Coleman.

On the whole, they looked solid in Germany, recording their fourth clean sheet in seven matches.

Those shutouts have come against FC Sion, Monaco, Wigan Athletic and now Bremen, most of which should not be scoffed at.

As for protection for the back four, Silva may now be sweating on the fitness of Fabian Delph (£5.5m) who was forced off with an injury in the fifth minute, replaced by Morgan Schneiderlin (£4.5m).

“Fabian’s injury looked to be nothing special but let’s see in the next few days. We will have to wait some more hours to see how he is. He felt something in the first moments of the match in his groin so let’s see in the next few days.” – Marco Silva

Meanwhile, there was no involvement for Jean-Philippe Gbamin after he signed from Mainz on Friday evening.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Keane, Mina, Coleman (c); Delph (Schneiderlin 5′), A Gomes; Bernard (Mirallas 82′), Sigurdsson (Davies 82′), Richarlison (Walcott 45′); Calvert-Lewin (Tosun 71′).

RB Leipzig 1-3 Aston Villa

After signing from Burnley this week, Heaton impressed on his Aston Villa debut

Goals: Conor Hourihane x2 (£5.5m), John McGinn (£5.5m)

Assists: Jack Grealish (£6.0m), Trezeguet (£5.5m)

Tom Heaton (£4.5m) was the star player for Aston Villa as he made his debut for the newly-promoted club on Saturday afternoon.

The former Burnley goalkeeper made a string of important saves to keep Dean Smith’s men in a strong position and eventually beat RB Leipzig 3-1 away from home.

In the first half, Heaton denied Konrad Laimer with his movement and stopped a Timo Werner effort that had taken a wicked deflection off defender Bjorn Engels (£4.5m).

After the break, he produced his best save of the afternoon, keeping a point-blank Marcel Sabitzer out of the net.

All of that bodes well for Fantasy managers scratching their heads for a £4.5m goalkeeper this season.

Given their defensive record in the Championship, and some suspect defending on Saturday afternoon, Villa are expected to concede a relatively high number of shots in 2019/20, so having a goalkeeper of Heaton’s quality should lead to a swathe of save-points.

Meanwhile, Villa do continue to look like an exciting prospect at the attacking end of the pitch.

In the five pre-season matches that they played, they did not blank in a single one and finished on a tally of 16 goals.

Conor Hourihane (£5.5m) responded to the signings of Douglas Luiz (£4.5m) and Marvelous Nakamba (£4.5m) with an inspired performance, scoring his first goals of pre-season.

Both of them were from free-kicks, the first coming after Jack Grealish (£6.0m) rolled the ball towards him after a foul on Wesley (£6.0m) and the second a direct effort fired into the corner.

The former Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley midfielder remains an important part of Villa’s midfield and will fancy his chances of starting in Gameweek 1.

Only Tyrone Mings (£4.5m) and Grealish registered more minutes than Hourihane in pre-season (317).

Also likely to start in the central midfield trio is John McGinn (£5.5m) who got his third goal of pre-season against Leipzig.

We had previously mentioned that this final friendly of the summer would be important for assessing Frederic Guilbert‘s (£4.5m) chances of starting the season.

The right-back has looked good in pre-season coming away with three assists from his advanced runs.

Despite last season’s first-choice Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) being back in the fold now, Smith handed yet another friendly start to Guilbert, his 295 minutes this summer making him the second-most used defender behind Mings.

On the other flank, Matt Targett (£4.5m) was given the nod ahead of Neil Taylor (£4.5m). He has now outplayed the former Swansea City left-back by 96 minutes this summer.

Engels is probably now favourite to accompany Mings at centre-back after his 90 minutes against Leipzig. He looked like he might need to come off with a bad injury at the end of the first half but came out for the second half in good shape.

The same could not be said for winger Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) who had to come off with a twisted ankle in the 77th minute.

He was replaced by new signing Trezeguet (£5.5m) who provided the assist for McGinn’s goal.

Jota (£6.0m) now looks very secure of a start in Gameweek 1 after he registered a 90-minute outing at Leipzig. No Villa winger has played as many minutes as him during pre-season (295).

Meanwhile, Wesley sould hold off any competition for the centre-forward role after he played 78 minutes.

Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) returned from his international leave to come on for the former Club Brugge man for the last 12 minutes but, at least for now, he will not be as prepared for the new Premier League season as the new signing.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Heaton; Targett, Mings, Engels, Guilbert; Hourihane, McGinn, Grealish; El Ghazi (Trezeguet 77′), Wesley (Kodjia 78′), Jota.

If it's 3 at the back, A no brainer.

I'm looking at Matip as well btw, but in a 4 back. Should be nailed on until UCL at least.

Goooood day all. First post in a long time!
Am I insane to have all 3 of Fraser/Wilson and King... ?

    Case for:
    1/ Cracking fixtures
2/ All 3 have pre season form (for what it's worth)
3/ all 3 easy flips to others at similar process with plenty of option
    4/ it's off template which I love

Case against: eggs in the one basket

    Thoughts?

It's probably one too many, but Fraser and Wilson were terrific last year, so if you can afford them both there won't be much risk in having thise feo in your team. King is a difficult choice, I've got a feeling that Solanke may just take some playing time from him.

Bournemouth don't have cracking fixtures. Fraser got half his returns against Brighton Fulham Huddersfield. If you think Sheffield and Villa are in sane category you're in for rude awakening. King away form is terrible and he relies too much on penalties to score

Salah, Sterling, De Bruyne, Tielemans (Dendoncker)
    Kane (Nketiah, Greenwood)

But I don't have to run a 5-4-1 every week. I can swap in Dendoncker (4-5-1) when needed. Or Greenwood (4-4-2), if he surprises and gets starts. In a way, it doesn't matter what the two 4.0 players do, considering the potential for huge returns from everyone else. Too optimistic?

Too optimistic. You can have a reasonable sound Salah, Sterling, Kane squad but throwing in KDB is too much and limits your options horrendously

I think 5 at the back without them all being cast iron starters is a really difficult call. You've only got one likely starter on your bench so it feels as though you're going to struggle if Rico and Lundstram don't play.

Thanks for the replies. I made a few moves. Here's what I'm on now (transfers in CAPS)...

      EDERSON (Stekelenberg)
Robertson, Digne, Wan-Bissaka, S. DUFFY (Lundstram)
Salah, BILVA, De Bruyne, Tielemans (Dendoncker)

    Some thoughts re: Everton pre-season.

Defensively have looked quite good with 3 clean sheets in 5 friendlies. Yerry Mina has slotted in really well with a lot of crucial interceptions and strong aerial presence. Keane has continued to be a leader and mature head from the back. Their defence remains solid despite losing Gueye to PSG. Gbamin will slot in nicely next to Andre Gomes.

Digne has been a standout with some marauding raids down the left flank and plenty of quality balls into the box. Would have had a couple of assists if the attackers had more polish. Went very close to scoring himself last night with a good link up with Bernard. Coleman has also looked ok but not in the same class as Digne. Having Richarlison back in the team bodes well for Coleman down the right side with the Brazilian creating problems for the Werder Bremen defence yesterday.

The problem lies in the final third. DCL is not up to scratch and has failed to capitalise on some good opportunities. Likewise Tosun has left a lot to be desired despite good energy and a high press. Kean is set to be handed the number 9 jersey for the Toffees usurping DCL and hopefully he shows he is a class above. Siggy has carried threat from set pieces but hasn’t looked fantastic in general play.

TL;DR: Digne a much better option that Coleman. Would avoid all attack until Kean settles into his number 9 role. If going for a member of the attack from GW1, it would have to be Richarlison over Siggy.

I've gone from 3 x Everton, to none, and now back to coleman + digne, just for fixtures, and they can still be place holders for CHE or ManU defence, or whoever else appears, plenty of options in the 5.5/6.0 def range, and considering the other options fixtures seems to make sense to give digne/coleman a chance for a couple of weeks and see how they look

Mina has looked rusty defensively. Think he'll get chances from set pieces.

Can’t wait to rock up to GW1 with Digne, Colman, TAA, Robbo - Merseyside fullbacks are where it’s at this FPL-wise season imo

Also encouraging to see Coleman is surviving the pre season schedule - himself & Digne have played basically identical minutes thus far - with Coleman having a slight edge in theoretical FPL points terms of 1G 0A vs Digne’s 0G 0A

Those two in 2019 year to date have been stellar FPL performers and hopefully they pick up exactly where they left off 🙂

      Digne 84 points, 16 Apps
      Coleman 85 points 14 Apps

That’s nearly 11 PPG in 2019 for a current knockdown price of 11.5m - even with a bit regression for Gueye leaving - I’ve a feeling the dynamic duo will be in full flight 🙂

People tend to read too much into preseason regardless of team, but with Everton it applies even more, always rubbish before season KO.

    If he is nailed then
Smith + any 4.5£ rotating option +0.5£ itb over Coleman isn't better ? At least we can get good bench cover too in 4.5£ defender.

Has not changed in a while.
Looked at Sterling over KDB but that means a 5.5 rather than Rich in midfield
Simple plan GW3 Wilson and Fraser to Son and Haller
KWP the one that's most punty will deal with it if I have to in GW3 or 4.

    Heaton

    Robbo TAA Walker KWP

    Salah KDB Rich Fraser Perez

    Wilson

    Woodman Lundstram Greenwood Wickham
    1.5 ITB

If mane starts, and thats a big if, this it what I will be going with. Haller is a pure punt, think he is class at 7.5 and Pepe the same, no point having the same team as everyone, gotta mix it up

    Pope
TAA / Digne / Wan Bissaka / KWP
    Sterling / Mane* / Pepe / Perez
    Wilson / Haller

    4.5 / 4.0 / Dendonker / 4.5

      Very nice.
KWP might become an issue in the short term.
Why not just find holders for Mane and Haller for a GW or 2.
Haller in is a plan for me too.
Pepe stats look as good but a lot of pens for his goals.

Mane conversion rate was pretty nuts last year and I think Salah dropped. If that reverse this year which is likely then there might be a bigger gap between Salah and Mane.

    Kdb or Eriksen?

Really fancy Eriksen, he’s got full control over set pieces as Trippier is gone and always consistent performer.
    Already have Sterling.

    Team:

    Heaton (Button)
    Robbo VVD Coleman Alder (Lunds)
Salah (c) Sterling Kdb Pérez (donks)
    Wilson Wesley (4.5)

Alternatively Wesley > Vardy with Eriksen > 6mil but this leaves with price point dilemma and not sure who with 6mil.

    Suggestions?
    Thanks!

i think both are great picks (eriksen, kbd) if both stay healthy/remain in prem. Kbd for me as the season keeper. both can be streaky with returns and put together a nice string of blanks. but KBD is going to be back with a vengeance (barring injury) and eriksen doesn't actually want to be there. Easy decision for me

Hello all, back again after a mini break!

My binoculars have been telling me that Hughes could be a good shout? Seems to be playing more centrally to Watford’s play whilst Pereyra isn’t in the side

5.5m is a risk worth taking with those initial fixtures surely?

Bilva and VVD or Dilva and Robertson?

Dilva has a better xgi than bilva by .15 and looks a better option from the eye test as he always plays as cam while bilva has played a variety of roles which sometimes hurts his fpl potential. Am worried that Dilva might start playing less although you’d think it wouldn’t be a worry until ucl starts.

There’s no getting around the fact that, though just one point separated Liverpool and Man City in the league table, the underlying numbers paint a much larger gap. Though there may be edges here and there, Klopp’s side likely will run closer to expected goals at both ends of the pitch this season. The 25 point gap down to the rest still feels too big a gap for any side to likely close, but Liverpool might have to settle for being closer to the chasing pack than the top tier this time out.

    https://statsbomb.com/2019/08/liverpool-2019-20-season-preview/

Quite interesting, stats going against the grain on here. Might not double up on Pool defence now...

      • 6 Years

One thing xg doesn’t take into account is quality of players. Alisson is a top gk and will save shots other gks wouldn’t save. Likewise VVD is a top defender and will put attackers off. I would expect them to still outperform their xg.

looks interesting, thanks- will plan to read tomorrow morning.

Regarding pool defenders (currently have taa + robbo): I'm definitely not expecting the 22 cleanies they got last season. 200+ points for vvd and robbo was absurd. Expecting 165-175 and hoping for 185. Still fantastic value

      "1pt difference."
      but
      "Stats paint a larger gap."

And that is the weakness of statistics. They are open to interpretation and you also need to be looking at the correct data sets.
