Sitting bottom of our Season Ticker in the first ten Gameweeks of the season, Newcastle United and their players aren’t likely to be popular Fantasy choices when the 2019/20 campaign gets underway this week.
The departure of Rafael Benitez was seen as something of a hammer blow, too, given the widely held consensus that he overachieved with the squad of players at his disposal.
New head coach Steve Bruce has so far been savvy enough to (largely) stick with the same system and players that Benitez managed last season, replacing any departees rather than looking to move on the reliable club servants of 2018/19 – although Mike Ashley’s transfer policy is, of course, a contributing factor in that regard.
Benitez was at St James’ Park for over three years so his methods may still be in evidence going into the start of the new season, with a core group of his players (particularly in defence) remaining on the books.
An analysis of last season’s numbers is still relevant, then, so we will examine the Magpies’ key underlying stats to see how Bruce’s side may affect the Fantasy landscape in the early part of 2019/20.

Love Redmond, he's improved so much in the past six month under Ralph. But there are still things he needs to improve upon. Finishing has been better, but could improve. If I didnt already have Adams, might've fancied a cheeky punt on him. is he better fpl option than Perez for the first six games? It is arguable, but I'd probably go Perez. But only just.
I prefer Adams. Ings has pens, but the one who has impressed me the most in preseason and passed the eye test splendidly is Adams. He initiate's the press up top, and just bullies defenders. Finishing is pretty good too.
possibly Origi for Ings, but usually would prefer to keep Ings I'm currently not doubling on Liverpool defense, will watch the first few games and might do it then, but that could give you an option to go 0.5 down
There's been mixed comments about Leicester's early fixtures. Liv away is really the only one where they might struggle to score in the first 10 games - chelsea and man u away could be anything absolutely agree the balance looks much better, though you probably lose a captain option without Kane (or Auba at that price)
I can't see any savings I can make elsewhere to upgrade (if it is an upgrade) Wilson to Vardy. Trossard can become Perez if you can twist my arm. But that would mean downgrading Fraser, which I'm loathe to do.
I could downgrade Wesley to a 5.0 but I can't see any of them playing regularly. Will take that hit in GW2 if Vardy becomes a bandwagon, but don't see that happening. It's a good option, though, so thanks.
I think the forwards are great actually. Toyed with 'upgrading' them. But they ALL take penalties for their teams and Ings and King are proven double digit goal scorers too. Ofc Ings could get crocked, but I'll deal with that when it inevitably happens.
Dilemma over 6 to 6.5 striker Wood great preseason but tough opening fixtures King horrendous away from home not great stats especially if shares pens with Wilson Dela ok as a mid not sure he will deliver enough points Ings hard fixtures shares points with Adams Adams as per Ings Pukki don't know enough about him Jota tough fixtures
Pope | Heaton TAA | VVD | Digne | Rico | Lundy Salah | Sterling | * | Perez | * * | * | 4.5 Which one? A) Lucas + Wilson + Jota/Wood + Barkley B) KDB + King + Murray/Wesley + Barkley C) Lucas + King + Fraser + Jota/Wood
I was of the same mind, but now I’m second guessing...if I exchange Fraser for Robinson(SHU) I can use the funds elsewhere: Bego Pope ARob;Slabhead;AWB;Digne(Lundstrom) Salah; Sterling; Perez; Robinson(Donk) King; Kane; Greenwood
