Pépé has potential to be most important FPL asset at Arsenal this season

Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m) has the potential to be Arsenal’s most important Fantasy Premier League asset in 2019/20.

The former Lille winger joins the Gunners with plenty of potential to both score goals and register assists this season.

We have assessed what Pépé is capable of and what he could bring to FPL in 2019/20.

The history and statistics

Pépé in action for Lille last season

Pépé arrives at Arsenal as one of the most promising players in Europe with much expected of him.

In recent seasons the 24-year-old has demonstrated tremendous pace in wide areas and possesses enormous amounts of skill to boot.

Curiously though, the attacking winger started his career as a goalkeeper for local side Solitaire Paris Est in France, playing that position until he was 14.

Pépé’s senior debut came for Angers in 2014 but his first extended period of football came with third-tier side Orléans.

During the 2015/16 campaign with them, he scored seven goals in 29 Championnat National matches.

A full season in Ligue 1 with Angers followed in 2016/17, Pépé scoring three times and assisting once in 11 starts and 22 substitute appearances.

That was enough to earn a move to Lille where the now Ivory Coast international enjoyed a breakout 2017/18 season.

In 36 appearances, Pépé found the net 13 times and provided four assists.

He went from strength-to-strength in 2018/19 as he scored 22 goals and registered 11 assists demonstrating his ability both to put chances away and create them for his team-mates.

Furthermore, Pépé’s attacking statistics were particularly impressive in the wider context of European football.

Pépé was one of just two players in Europe’s top five leagues to score 20 or more goals and register 10 or more assists in the same season. The other? Lionel Messi. Not bad company to be keeping.

For that reason, Pépé was a highly courted player in the summer of 2019, linked with many of the elite European sides.

The fact that he has signed for Arsenal should very much be considered a coup and has been met with much excitement from their fanbase.

It would be fair to say that he is probably one of the most appealing of any new signing made by a Premier League team ahead of 2019/20.

Comparisons

2018-19 Mins per shot Mins per shot in the box Mins per shot on target Mins per key pass
Nicolas Pépé 28.2 46.8 54.5 47.5
Aubameyang 29.1 47.1 68.3 82.8
Lacazette 31 47.3 83.6 80.9
Mkhitaryan 33.6 65.8 117.4 56.7
Ramsey 40 72.8 106.7 51.6
Özil 158.4 193.6 290.3 38.7

The Prospects

Pépé should add both goals and assists to Arsenal this season

Once he has reached the required levels of fitness, Pépé should slot straight into Emery’s Arsenal team seamlessly.

The Gunners have been lacking a pacey wide player with the ability to stretch opponents in wide areas for some time.

The addition of Pépé to their squad enhances Arsenal’s attacking credentials greatly, considering that he is capable both of scoring and setting up goals.

His pace and trickery should help unlock even the most stubborn of defences and cause opponents plenty of problems.

Pépé attempted 5.76 dribbles per game in Ligue 1 last season and that drive should also see him do well in the Premier League, even if the average difficulty level of opponent is likely to rise for him.

As you can see from the table above, Pépé compared very favourably against his new colleagues based on 2018/19’s performances.

His minutes per shot of 28.2 was better than any of the selected attacking options the Gunners had at their disposal last season.

The same goes for his shot in the box every 46.8 minutes and shot on target every 54.5 minutes. As we’ve already explained, we have to attach a caveat to these that the Premier League is a tougher league than Ligue 1 but there is no doubt that Pépé is an exciting attacking talent.

Based on those numbers, there is a chance he can rival both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) for goal threat, but he also proved in 2018/19 that he is much more creative than them too.

He fashioned a chance every 47.5 minutes, with only Mesut Özil (£7.5m) offering better than that among Arsenal’s ranks last season.

This is why Pépé could potentially overtake his new colleagues and prove to be the most important FPL option among Arsenal’s ranks as he can combine both goals and assists regularly if he lives up to his potential.

The introductory price as a £9.5m midfielder is what seals our serious interest in this player. Already, he can offer a saving of £1.5m against Aubameyang and the fact that he is the same price as Lacazette is also important. While offering an extra point for goals, Pépé will also be eligible for clean sheets which could see him prove better value compared to the Frenchman too.

It is also worth saying that these added levels of creativity, from a wide position, could also boost the attacking potential of Aubameyang and Lacazette at the same time.

However, we should temper the excitement a little bit by explaining some mitigating circumstances for the impressive nature of his 2018/19 campaign.

Of the 22 goals that he scored in Ligue 1, nine of these were from the penalty spot.

It is worth pointing out that Aubameyang and Lacazette are already established penalty takers at Arsenal.

That is not to suggest that Pépé could not work his way into that pecking order, but as things stand we have little evidence to guarantee that he will.

That said, even if Pépé does not manage to challenge Aubameyang or Lacazette for penalty-taking responsibilities, his style of play could still see him win Fantasy points for spot-kicks.

Of the nine penalties that he scored last season, five were won by fouls on him, so it’s possible that he could be the one most likely to secure them for Arsenal this year which, if scored, would afford him assist points.

Finally, Fantasy managers may also have to wait before they can jump straight into signing Pépé for their Gameweek 1 squads.

He was part of the Ivory Coast squad that made it to the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations this summer and was given some extended time off.

For that reason, Arsenal’s latest signing was not part of the matchday squad for the 2-1 defeat to Barcelona over the weekend.

“Tomorrow we are going to train together. Each day for him [Pepe] and for us is information we can save. ‘We hope he can be [available] for this match [against Newcastle next Sunday]. With him, I want to be patient. He is in the same situation as the other players who have been coming in the last days. For example, Lucas Torreira, after one week of training today has his first ten minutes. With Pépé, it’s the same. It’s better to be training and be working with us.” – Unai Emery

Clearest issue for me is that Kean won’t start game-week 1. Ideally best not to book transfers in, but I’m looking at starting with Wood (King would be another option) and then switching to Kean a week or two later.

  3. Shaw and Martial - overlooked?

TL;DR - Shaw & Martial are United's best fantasy assets, Pogba playing deeper in new system

Can United's new tactics offer any value for fantasy managers?

From a tactical perspective, United most closely resemble Liverpool. In pre-season, United have lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with an emphasis on pressing high. Much like Liverpool, United now have a reasonably solid back 5.

Both teams have a distinct lack of creativity in midfield. Henderson/Keita/Fabinho etc. could easily read Lingard/McTominay/Matic etc. from a fantasy point of view. Obviously Pogba is something of an exception given he takes pens and some freekicks (more on his role later).

Solskjaer appears to be attempting to mitigate his team's lack of creativity in midfield in the same way as Klopp, by pushing both full backs higher up the pitch. When in a controlled attack, United load the final third with 5 bodies, specifically the 4 attacking players and the relevant full back. The pivoted midfielders hold back until the team is attacking in the box. Should the attack move in to the box, the pivoted midfielder is encouraged to make a late run in to the box. McTominay 6'4 & Pogba 6'3 should offer aerial threats from a late run.

At the same time, from a defensive point of view, the non attacking full back inverts to join the two pivoted midfielders. Shaw & AWB are both quick players and this is designed to cover the relative lack of pace offered by Pogba & McTominay.

The 4-3-3 of last season saw Pogba line up as a LCM. As he was United's most creative player, most of United's attacks came down the left last season and I wouldn't expect this to change much as these areas will be dominated by Rashford/Martial. Where we might see a change is how the attack is launched.

Assuming United line up in a 4-2-3-1 with Maguire as the LCB and Pogba acting as a midfield pivot, I expect to see less required from Pogba. Maguire naturally passes to the left (last season he passed to Chilwell more than any other player). If United continue to attack down the left side most often, Shaw and the LW are likely to be the benfeciaries of Maguire's preferred passing channels.

If the system United have employed during pre-season continues with LW attacks, Shaw joins a front 5 attack and AWB joins the 2 pivoted midfielders. As a result we could reasonably expect more attacking returns from Shaw in 19/20 with potentially less yellows as AWB covers defensively (Young definitely did not).

Notably, Shaw takes some corners for United. Maguire may prove a useful decoy/attacking threat on a Shaw corner. On a non-Shaw corner, Shaw tends to lurk somewhere outside the box unlike AWB who is stationed towards the half-way line.

The other player to keep an eye on is Martial. He interchanges with Rashford on the LW and seems reasonably certain of starting most matches. Martial doesn't press as aggressively as Rashford and I think we can expect Martial to pick up fewer injuries throughout the season. Much like Vardy, Martial is exceptionally clinical in front of goal and reasonably selfish.

I think we'll see a natural regression to the mean for both teams. Liverpools defence conceded 7 fewers goals than expected and United's 3 more than expected. Factor AWB and Maguire and I'd expect United to keep something around 14 - 16 clean sheets with Liverpool around 18 clean sheets.

It's important to remember that we're not expecting the same defence to magically improve over night, that would be utterly foolish.

We're expecting a defence which has AWB and Maguire added to it to be better than Young and Jones/Smalling over the course of a season.

But you expect Utd to keep 14-16 clean sheets. 7-9 more than last season. That's a major difference to last season. Liverpool had 17 clean sheets the season before last. 4 fewer than last season

The major difference is last season from a defensive point of view was unusual for Man Utd given their historic defensive abilities. The season before they kept more CS's than anyone else.

And they were very fortunate to do so that season. Utd were a complete mess for the last 2 months of last season. I'm not sure AWB and Maguire transforms their clean sheet prospects that much considering Utds weak midfield and inconsistent forwards.

United's defence should be improved but I can't see Liverpool conceding less unless VVD is out long-term. Trent and Gomez are very young and should improve this season and you should concede 7 goals below the expected rate when you have the best keeper and CB in the world.

Do you mean you can’t see their defense conceding more? Statistically that defense over performed last season, I’m not saying they won’t do it again, I would suggest it’s unlikely they’ll over perform again. Whereas the opposite is true of the united defense. They under performed and are unlikely to do so again.

All very nice points but there are also many things we should be aware of.

If we learnt anything from last few seasons it is that Shaw will get injured soon, happens every year.

United have pretty much the same team as last year and we know how they were playing at the end of last season.

Pogba looks like he wants to move away and if he stays he could be in bad mood which could also lead to having a bad mood in dressing room.

Unlike Liverpool i expect a lot more players to get into points, Martial,Rashford, James

Shaw missed 2 games through injury last year. The biggest issue he had was yellow cards, arguably as a result of making essential fouls due to the inability of other United defenders.

I can’t really see James scoring many points. His crossing is terrible and decision making leaves a lot to be desired, he’s a completely avoid for me.

No debate that the team is much the same. The only thing you can say is the defense looks significantly better than the one from last year. The key argument is the quality of Maguire & AWB is 100x better than Smalling & Young. Maguire offers the ability to counter attack from deep, whether that’s running forward with the ball or long range passing.

Currently have Martial in my squad. Having watched him closely enough the last few years I'm not to high on him becoming a top player but for some reason think he'll do well over the first 5/6 games this year. He's a really good finisher. Doesn't seem very competitive though, and a bit soft.

Great analysis. Correct point of Wan bisska who is more defense minded than your regular RB. He barely joins attack but good defender so racks up Baps. Problem with Shaw is his crossing is bit erratic not accurate like Robertson. From get go maybe Martial is worth a punt as can switch to many good mids at 7-8mn if he fails but Shaw only warrants when Maguire settles and calms the defence

I think Ole is asking for quite a large mentality shift from Shaw. His crossing and decision making will definitely need to improve but at 5.5, potentially an under-priced asset.

It might be worth noting that Shaw managed 5 assists last season, in 17/18 season Robertson managed 5.

While I’m not suggesting that Shaw will match Robertson, I think his average position in the Utd attack will increase the probability he offers attacking returns.

On the Maguire note, he’s won player of the season each time he joins a new club which suggests he settles in to a new team quickly. The returns may come quicker than some expect.

This is awesome, but even hinting that Utd will get clean sheet numbers close to Liverpool's... Is funny, to say the least. It's not just about the defence, it's about the midfield. McTominay and Pogba is not going to be solid enough. And one of the reasons Liverpool had such awesome numbers last season is due to their ownership of the elite talents of van Dijk and Alisson. You'd expect them to perform above the mean...

From a statistical point of view, we expect players to perform exactly at their mean. From season to season, we expect variations from their mean but they'll always end up posting numbers roughly where we expect them over a reasonable sample size - think De Gea with his worldie season in 17/18 and then falling apart in 18//19, overall his numbers across two seasons bring him towards his mean. I'm not saying that Liverpool won't continue over-performing, I'm suggesting it's unlikely that their defence continues to overperform.

The last time there was this number of clean sheets was the 2008/9 season. Potential rule changes may quickly change that.

I think where comparisons between United and Liverpool are to be made, it isn't over how many clean sheets each will get, in the context of the post the question is will Shaw at 5.5m get more points than Gomez, Matip or Lovren at 5.5? Given Shaw's nailedness I'd yes yes he will. The poster is suggesting Shaw will outscore AWB, Maguire and Lindelhof as well. In those terms, I'm persuaded that Shaw is a good recommendation for a 5.5 defender.

Whether a team is good or not is somewhat irrelevant in FPL. We’re simply looking for players who can significantly out score players at similar price points.

I’m suggesting that Shaw and Martial may be able to do that because of United’s style of play.

Utd will sign at least one more player. If it is a holding midfielder, expect better defensive returns. I find it incredible that people think a defence that has one bad season is suddenly perpetually porous. Last year was an anomaly. The year before they hardly conceded at all. I don't think people realise how good at defending AWB is. DDG also had a bad season. They will not be anywhere near as bad as last year. I expect Utd to be vying for the third best defence with Spurs after Liverpool and City.

I think we’ll see United post approximately 14 clean sheets this season. Anything above that would be an exceptionally good season while they implement Solskjaers system.

Given arsenal can’t defend and Lampard is new to the prem league, 4th is achievable for utd.

This season they are under ogs who looks like he could be gone by xmas as once the good feeling bubble burst his team fell apart, weak forwards who give away possession too easily and who don't press as a unit to get it back as well as a weak midfield who give away the ball too easily and have very little pace in recovery. I like the idea of martial as an fpl option at his price but why did he play so few minutes last season?

Mourinho and then he had a groin problem which he got surgery on after the season completed. He's nailed now.

      Robbo/ TAA / Coleman / Stones
      Salah/ Sterling / Moura / Barkley
      Wilson / Haller
      Button / Dendocker / lundstram / 4.5fwd

A Little bit of advice needed here please peeps.

After much deliberation I had settled on a squad that I was happy with and had settled on it the past week or so.

Here is that Squad (0.0 ITB)
      A)
Heaton McCarthy (or the actual Southampton Keeper - As I Like the Villa Saints Rotation)

      Digne Robbo Walker Diop Taylor
      Salah Sterling Bernardo Siggy Dendoncker
      King Moise Kean Greenwood

BUT in the past 2 days I got worried about the weak forward line and having too much money sunk into 5/6 players, So now I have changed to the following:

      B)
      Heaton McCarthy
Robbo Walker Diop Boly Lundstram (I did initially have Boly and Diop for the rotation between WHM and Wolves)
      Salah Sterling Gudmundsson Siggy Dendoncker
      Wilson Wood Kean

I guess there is more coverage in Squad B but I am worried about losing Digne and Bernardo or have I made the right call.

Any suggestions for improvements to either squad is welcome.

      Thanks

      TAA | VVD | Zinchenko | Dunk | Guilbert
      Salah | Sterling | KdB | Norwood

          Beautiful.
Only 3 points I'd look at are:

          - Premium keeper? VVD instead and cheap keeper?
          - Better 4.5 alternatives to A.Smith.
          - Don't know much about Kean?

Carrying on from my post at the bottom of the last page..

If Auba and TAA had played every game last season (full 90 mins) they would both have scored over 250 points.

      Salah would have scored 270.

Therefore if you own Salah and not TAA you could be paying £5.5m for about 20 extra points over the season.
