The impact Ralph Hasenhuttl has had on Southampton’s FPL assets

Southampton are one of the most overlooked teams in Fantasy Premier League as Gameweek 1 draws ever nearer.

Only one of the Saints’ FPL assets is owned by more than 2.5% of managers: Shane Long (£5.0m), who, barring injuries, is expected to be among the substitutes when Southampton run out at Turf Moor this Saturday.

While the south coast club’s fixtures are a horror show between Gameweeks 7 and 13 (all of the sides they face in this period finished in the top nine last season), there are some more appealing encounters with Burnley, Brighton, Sheffield United and Bournemouth in the first half-dozen Gameweeks.

Pre-season results are not always a reliable barometer but the Saints are unbeaten in five matches this summer, winning four of them.

New signing Che Adams (£6.0m) has arguably been the stand-out performer, with three goals and two assists.

Is there anything to encourage Fantasy investment in the first six Gameweeks, then?

In this latest Numbers Game article, we take a slightly different approach to the series template and instead focus on the impact Ralph Hasenhuttl has made on Southampton following his appointment in December 2018.

Not a fan of Jota personally - and no playing subs is risky. Why not downgrade Jota to a 4.5 and then upgrade your 2 non-playing defenders to a 4.5 and somebody else. Give you a defender who can hopefully match Jota and some bench cover

Toying with a 451 - Trying to be flexible so I can bring in another fwd after first 1-3 ish gameweeks... there's just too many options in the 6.5 - 7.5 range, and Wilson should return something for sure?

    Pope (Ryan)
    VVD Robbo Zinch Digne (Lundstram)
    Salah Sterling Ziggy Martial Robinson
    Wilson (Nketiah Wickham)

Won't be picking Greenwood as a sub - Don't think he'll play, and too afraid that his price will decrease early.

    Trying to decide
    Pope og Heaton?
    Zinch or AWB?

Any general thoughts on the team?

Can i suggest ditching Zinch and Lund for two rotating 4.5 defenders and using 0.5 to upgrade Robinson? Would also get you at least one sure starter on the bench

I thought about the rotating 4.5s defenders, and then using the extra 0.5 to up Ryan to Heaton so I could rotate GKs aswell..

I really like the Robinson pick actually! He had a really good preseason, and could be a steal at 5.5

So Cancelo signing makes Zinchenko less attractive to own, same with Everton signing Sidibe for Coleman.

Ederson and Digne seem like good options in comparison but they are so expensive.

Far from it.. Coleman is getting on and his minutes will he managed. Digne the superior option now not only for attacking threat but also assurance of starts

It seems strange Everton would pay a high loan fee to bench him the whole year. He'll play occasionally for sure.

People tend to assume every new signing goes straight into the first team. I think it unlikely - both will be cover initially. Cancelo is mainly RB, cover for Walker anyway.

Nice. It’s a choice of City defence or better midfield and you’ve chosen the latter.

I’ve gone City defence over Perez/Siggy.

      Just the 2 LFC assets?

Thanks for the reply, two pool is all that can be squeezed in at present, although I did consider Origi over King.

Rough idea if Zaha joins Everton is to sell Siggy for him at GW 3 (Zaha had no preseason and imo theres no chance he plays v Palace anyway as part of the deal) and then do Wilson to Haller

Rico GW 1 yeah, followed by Lundstram GW 2 and 3.

Looks great but having toplay one of Rico\Lund\Dend\Green every week is a big minus on this team...if you could upgrade one defender to 4.5 then it would be much better, there are some decent options at 4.5 that could be ok for a while

Stat experts, do we have data on avg keeper points home vs away?
Heaton and pope rotate well but wondering if it’s gonna be a headache choosing when to play them.

        4 years, 8 months ago

        This. It’s fsr too unpredictable.

You’d be tempted to field the keeper playing the weaker team, but in fact very often it could be your other keeper who scores more v a big team because they have set up parking the bus and gets a lot of save points.

Stick with a solid keeper who saves a lot and has the best chance of a CS.

The key is choosing a pair that rotate well who are both rock solid at home. Burnley turned a corner at the back when Heaton returned last season, but overall they were disappointing (granted they don't have Europa league this season). Villa, as a newly promoted team, are very much a wait and see.

So in answer to your question, I haven't got a clue 😀

Not home vs away (although 60% clean sheets at home) but this spreadsheet shows why cheap keeper rotation risky at best as the balance of points from cheap keepers doesn't come solely from clean sheets

He'd become Stones if he was more nailed. Might even become AWB or Maguire after a few GWs if United look half solid at the back. That would mean no City defence cover though.

Yes it’s not easy choosing 4.5 defenders obviously arsenal aren’t renowned for cleanies but the 1st 2 fixtures to assess the options. What do you think of the rest?

I'd maybe go Diop(play Lund GW1) or Dunk over Chambers to start with.
I'm trying to convince myself to go with Haller from the start but may have to be a wait and see.
Martial could be a good pick if he gets a good run in the team but easily replaced if not.

    A frontline of

    Zaha Sigurdsson Richarlison
    Kean

Is possibly better than United/Chelsea attack. If Everton actually make the Zaha rumours a reality . . .

It’s certainly a damn good front line I can see Kean doing really well.

Prefer A personally especially if Robinson is nailed and OOP as you suggest

Hmmm. Starting to go off Robo simply because I don't want to be thinking of FF whilst I'm at the lane. But at the same time he's generally a really good option. Ahhh

I’ve changed my team so much over the last three weeks that whoever scores will feel like the bandwagon I should have stayed on!

Get that every year. The one that got away "I had him! I had him!"

      In draft #56 of #127.

I've had Zinch im my team for some time now but recently starting to think that instead Zinch + 4.0 fodder is better to go for two rotating 4.5 defenders and Invest 0.5 elsewhere or keep it in the bank.

Zinch is a transfer waiting to happen and first few games are not to god for clean sheet, he is facing some goods attacks and will be against some fast and tricky attackers and i'm starting to think that two rotating 4.5 defenders can match him while at the same time giving me another playing bench player since none of the 4.0 is certain to start.

Yup ive been looking at this.

Another option is going with a 6.0m fwd/mid instead of him.

    A) Siggy + AWB/Maguire
    b) Moura + Digne

Leaning towards B but Siggy's opening fixtures are tasty?
