FPL lessons learned from Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Norwich

Liverpool got the new Premier League campaign off to a flying start on Friday night with a 4-1 win over Norwich City.

In this latest Scout Notes article, we have assessed the key Fantasy talking points from Anfield as we start making early preparations for Gameweek 2.

Also, there is a new feature for Scout Notes available to Fantasy Football Scout Members this year.

Each Scout Notes article will end with an analysis of the match data, which, more often than not, can give the best insight into the Fantasy implications, in combination with the eye test, of course.

Liverpool 4-1 Norwich City

Goals: Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), Divock Origi (£5.5m) | Teemu Pukki (£6.5m)

Own Goals: Grant Hanley (£4.0m)

Assists: Origi, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) | Emi Buendía (£6.0m)

Bonus Points: Origi x3, Salah x2, Pukki x1

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) rewarded the faith shown in him for the Gameweek 1 captaincy by registering a 12-point haul in Liverpool’s Friday night win.

Owned by 43% of Fantasy managers, and captained by over 60% of those who voted in the Fantasy Football Scout poll for the armband, the Egyptian was most obliging at Anfield.

He scored the second goal in the rout, latching onto the end of Roberto Firmino‘s (£9.5m) through ball and slotting cooly under Tim Krul (£4.5m).

Salah then provided the assist for Virgil van Dijk‘s (£6.5m) goal with a corner. The fact that he took the set piece will be of further encouragement to those in possession of the Egyptian.

Salah celebrates scoring Liverpool’s second goal against Norwich

However, we should not get too carried away by his involvement in the corners at least, as it appears at this early stage of the campaign that he is sharing them with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m).

The left-footed Salah took the responsibility for corners on the left side of the field, while Alexander-Arnold took those on the right, creating out-swinging crosses on both flanks.

It must be said that, despite producing some excellent crosses from open play, and getting an assist from them, the right-back’s delivery from the corner flag was relatively poor against Norwich.

However, those who opted for Alexander-Arnold over Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) were still satisfied with the outcome of the game, as he outscored his colleague by five points to two.

Alexander-Arnold provided the assist for Divock Origi‘s (£5.5m) goal with a trademark cross from deep and should have arguably registered a second assist on the night, were it not for a Firmino miss.

The right-back was played in behind the Norwich defence by a skilful Salah backheel and his ball across the goal was wrapped around the post from very close range by Firmino.

Alexander-Arnold also could have scored as he slammed a second-half direct freekick towards Norwich’s goal, only for Krul to produce an excellent save to keep him out.

Against Norwich, Alexander-Arnold had the edge over Robertson offensively

Robertson owners were perhaps the most disappointed of all considering that van Dijk registered eight points from scoring in the first half.

The Dutchman has now scored six goals in his last 18 appearances for Liverpool as he continues to extend his threat from set-pieces.

The disparity between the three key Liverpool defenders’ Gameweek 1 scores was very much rooted in the fact that Liverpool lost their clean sheet in the second half.

The Reds did not look their usual assured selves at the back in this opening match of 2019/20, even before they were forced into a goalkeeper change in the 38th minute.

Norwich did not make it easy for Liverpool as they, as promised by manager Daniel Farke, refused to park the bus and asked some questions of their illustrious hosts in the first half.

Half-way through the initial period, Norwich had registered more than double the number of Liverpool’s shots (five to two) with Marco Stiepermann (£5.5m) responsible for three of those efforts.

From the off, Norwich looked to get on the ball where possible and pressed Liverpool high up the pitch.

It was this pressure that led their first chance, ensuring that Alisson‘s (£6.0m) wayward pass in the first five minutes was pounced upon by Teemu Pukki (£6.5m). His cross into the box was fired over the bar by Stiepermann but was certainly a warning sign of what Norwich are capable of this season.

Pukki busted the Liverpool clean sheet in the second half

Just as they did on their way to winning the Championship title last season, the Canaries played the ball out from the back as often as possible, even if, at times, it left them a little exposed.

When in possession at the back, the full-backs pushed up the pitch and the centre-backs split across either side of the penalty box to receive passes from goalkeeper Krul.

Even when they were 4-0 down, Norwich were determined to press and prod Liverpool from the front.

That led to substitute Moritz Leitner (£6.0m) finding the space to shoot inside the box around the hour mark, seeing his effort cannon off the crossbar.

These elements of their play are bound to have both positive and negative effects for Norwich this season. It was this energetic insistence on moving the ball and putting pressure on opposing defenders that helped Pukki score their first top-flight goal of the campaign but it is likely to lead to plenty of shots given up – good news for captain candidates set to face the Canaries.

As for the implications on Liverpool, there will certainly be further concern over their defensive assets.

What Norwich were able to do at Anfield was akin to the test Manchester City gave the Liverpool back-line in the Community Shield final.

Klopp did make one change from that match, starting Joe Gomez (£5.5m) at centre-back instead of Joel Matip (£5.5m) but even at this early stage, those with a Liverpool defensive double-up may already be considering their options.

Once again, Liverpool looked especially fragile down Alexander-Arnold’s flank, and Norwich enjoyed most of their work in the first half in his area of the pitch.

The fact that has happened both against elite opposition in Manchester City and a lesser-side in the Canaries might just increase concerns over Alexander-Arnold’s role in the team moving forward.

Alisson had to come off injured in the 38th minute

Those who had grown unfamiliar with just how cruel FPL can be were given a sharp reminder in the first half.

Alisson came into the 2019/20 season as the most selected goalkeeper, in 32.5% of squads, but he was withdrawn in the first half.

The Liverpool shot-stopper went down with a calf problem in the 38th minute and had to be replaced by Adrian (£4.5m), who was added to FPL at £4.5m.

There seemed to be a suggestion from the media that Alisson was not quite ready to come back into the side so soon after returning from Copa America duty over the summer.

Either way, those who signed him for Gameweek 1 will be bitterly disappointed as they scored just one point and may now have to make an unwanted goalkeeper transfer for Gameweek 2.

Alisson has already been ruled out of the European Super Cup clash with Chelsea midweek and is, therefore, a doubt for the trip to Southampton next Saturday.

“The Ali situation is madness. It’s a calf injury. He felt as if something hit him from the back. He will not be ready for Wednesday, I can say that already. It’s probably more than a strain. We will have to see. It does not look too good.” – Jurgen Klopp

In the meantime, could former West Ham man Adrian become an incredible set and forget option for our Fantasy teams? We’ll have to wait for more information on Alisson’s injury but Adrian does have some potential.

“(Adrian) is a very confident guy and he came in and I don’t think he wanted to sit only on the bench for the next couple of years. He made himself ready. It is a situation, but if you are in a situation like this you want to have somebody who has played the league and who is experienced. He is 32, a calm guy, emotional as well, good with his feet – how we saw – and that’s really important for us. There are a lot of good things, but you still don’t want to have a situation where one goalie is fit. That’s how it is, but we have to see.” – Jurgen Klopp

Finally, as expected, Sadio Mané (£11.5m) was missing from the Liverpool starting line-up following his late return from African Cup of Nations commitments this summer.

That allowed Origi feature on the left flank of Liverpool’s 4-3-3 system, and get two attacking returns.

It was his first-half cross that was deflected into the Norwich net by Grant Hanley (£4.0m), and Origi connected with an Alexander-Arnold cross before half-time to make it 4-0.

Whether Origi is involved in Gameweek 2 remains to be seen though, given that Mané replaced him in the 73rd minute.

More importantly, the Senegalese international looked incredibly sharp, bearing down on Norwich’s defence from his position on the left flank. The energy he showed in his 17-minute cameo suggests he is probably raring to get back into the starting line-up.

For those considering Adrian. Is TAA or Robertson worth an extra 2.5m for their attacking returns....?

I think so, mainly because with Adrian they'll concede a lot more. Allison really saved their bacon a lot of times last year as good as the defense was

          Think you're contradicting yourself there.
I don't see why Adrian should make the defence a whole lot worse myself.

Sorry, where's the contradiction? Not saying anything other than they'll concede more with Adrian than Allison

ultimately they play in the same defence so the only difference is attacking returns and bonus for £2.5m. if we assume last seasons returns (13 assists) then thats 39pts and let says 11 bonus = 50 points. 50/2.5m = 20 points per million.

To be fair thats pretty decent for the outlay.

Pukki’s finish was clever but yes as a West Ham fan I said on here if Alisson gets injured adrian’s career is over. He really is not good enough if tested, mignolet level reputation shake up incoming.

No but they are worth it for the fact that Adrian is going to cost 2 transfers over 4ish game weeks unless the rest of your team is set up for the extreme long term.

You’re making the assumption teams have only one playing keeper. Many have Pope + Heaton for example.

It would still cost me 3 transfers just now. I would need to sell Robbo/TAA, sell Heaton, and probably another transfer somewhere else to use the freed-up funds. Won't do it unless I really need the funds. Also depends on how long Alisson is out for.

Personally, if I got Adrian in, I'd take my time over it. My keeper is Pickford - assuming Everton's defence looks solid today, I'd not be in a rush to lose him. If Adrian is in until Christmas and does well next week, then I could use 2FT to swap Robbo and Pickford for Adrian and an emerged 4.5 defender. Got 3.5m in the bank to use for my FT the following week.

Yeah, I agree, I could do that too. I said I won't do it unless I really need the funds. If I don't see the need for that money (2.5m in my case) to upgrade some other player, I'd rather use those transfers for something else. I already have some in mind for GW3, so it depends on whether I see this as the best move.

We're on the same page then. I see it as an option, once I've seen everyone play 2 matches. I don't see the need for the panicking going on already.

This is the question, Adrian’s appeal (assuming Allison out for an extended period) is what are you comparing him to.

Without question he would be the best 4.5 keeper in the league, even if he is not as good as Allisson the amount of possession and pressure Liverpool have means he will get more clean sheets then any other 4.5 GK in the comp (across whatever period he is the starter.

However if you compare him to the other Liverpool defenders is his value worth forgoing any attacking stats (particularly against TAA, VVD or Robbo). Also you have to consider would he be top 3 Liverpool assets (in value vs points) as managers will ideally want max Liverpool in their team at some point.

I’d take a clean sheet from Adrian and 2.5 to spend elsewhere over a clean sheet and an assist from TAA. And that’s assuming TAA assists... or starts..

If Alisson is out for a few months then yes IMO.

I think the 2.5m would make the Salah, Sterling, Kane team a possibility.

If Adrian is an option for the medium to long term then I'll be seriously considering Robertson or TAA to Laporte and Heaton to Adrian. Would cost me 4 points but it means still having double Liverpool defence and adding the addition of a Man City defender.

Probably. With only one game there’s a relatively small number of possible scores, compared to the number of players. Think how many all had Cap Salah, VVD & Robbo, or Salah & TAA etc.

They have very favourable fixtures for the first few months. They've spent a shed load on new players so have a chance of survival. There run in looks hard though and they may struggle to pick up points in the last few months.

I think he'll get Arsenal because it's a home game. In general, I don't think Klopp will bench him for home games unless they're directly after European games and even then it's unlikely imo.

It's the away games that are directly before or after Europe where he could get benched so Southampton seems the one especially since Klopp subbed him for Milner in the same fixture last year.

I'm a Liverpool fan but don't take this as law or anything...

Not worried too much about Pool def tbh.

Have Robbo & TAA will monitor both for the next 2-3 gameweeks and if they dont seem like keeping clean sheets its an easy transfer to Laporte.

Roberston & TAA are season long prospects. You don't 'decide' on them in 2-3 weeks. Easy 20-ish clean sheets with 10+ attacking returns if you have any sort of patience.

Yeah because Adrian is nowhere close Alisson's level.
Cant seem them keeping 20 clean sheets if Alisson is out for sometime.

Depends how long Allison is out for and how big an impact Adrian has on their clean sheets (or lack of them)

Without the clean sheets they aren’t worth the money (as they need the clean sheets to get the high Baps)

So when people are WCing in 3 or 4 weeks time I reckon:

        1) Adrian will come in as a £4.5m set and forget GK
        2) Zinchenko and KWP will be transferred out as they become rotation risks
        3) One of the £6m or less punts like Trossard, Barkley, Lamela, McGinn will be flavour of the month
        4) One of the £6.5m or less strikers like Jota, King, Deloufeu, Maupay will be flavour of the month

Adrian is only worth considering if Alisson's injury is months. If it isn't his achilles, it isn't going to be a long term injury.

There's no set way of playing the game so it's fine to go without him.

What's annoying is that a lot of his non owners lament Salah and those who own him, only to go on and eventually own him themselves.

            It's tough when you're addicted.

I read and listen to tonnes of FPL content but I only listen to a handful of pundits.

You can read what you want, where you want and when you want.

I bet you FFS didn't feel dirty when they hiked up member prices to 17.50.

            I'd pay £17.50 to get Mark's insight.

I’d suggest hoping they keep clean sheets

Just got to wait and see how long Allison is out for and the impact Adrian has on clean sheet potentia. For me having 3 is too much concentration of risk anyway but to obviously decided you were ok with that.

Have the team values been removed when viewing other people's teams this year?
Can we no longer to see their team value and transfers made during the live game week?

It's probably a good thing if so. We shouldn't be able to get an advantage by monitoring team value for possible transfers

I honestly can't believe Adrian is liverpool's number 2 keeper - I don't know much of him aside from having him in my side for far too long 2 seasons ago through some plumb fixtures where he managed to both rarely get any save points or clean sheets. West ham let in 10 more than their xG that year, pool let in 7 less than their xG last year. That sort of impact is not insignificant...

He’s a poor keeper. Me and West Ham fans knew if Alisson got an injury his reputation would be in trouble.

Fabianski was their keeper last year.

Adrian is decent. Not amazing, but he'll do a job.

Ah, gotcha. I guess we'll have to just see what happens. Adrian has been both very good at times in the past, perhaps he'll perform.

The year HART nearly got them relegated.
              Adrian saved them.

There's always going to be a drop off from #1 to #2.

Especially when the #1 was the best GK in Europe last season.

        Heaton (Button)
        VvD, Coleman, Walker (Lundstram, Rico)
        Salah, Sterling, KDB, Perez, Trossard
        Wilson, Jota (Greenwood)

Heaton > Adrian? (assuming Alisson out long-term!)
