Captain Poll

Close battle expected for Gameweek 3 captaincy

Fantasy Premier League managers have been handed the first captaincy conundrum of the season ahead of Gameweek 3.

After relatively simple debates for the armband in the opening two rounds of matches, it is wide open this week.

Despite amassing more than 50% support for Gameweek 2, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) blanked at Southampton, which could dent his appeal for the visit of Arsenal to Anfield on Saturday.

However, the Egyptian registered a goal and an assist last time he hosted the Gunners in the Premier League, while it is likely that he and his team-mates will have shaken off any cobwebs following the Super Cup final too.

With Arsenal bottom of the league for clean sheets in away matches last season, Sadio Mané (£11.5m) might enter the conversation this week after he registered a goal and assist against Southampton. The former Saint also scored a goal against Arsenal last season.

However, the man with the best record against the Gunners in 2018/19 was Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), who netted three goals in two such matches last term.

The Brazilian has registered attacking returns in both Gameweeks of 2019/20 so far too.

Those put off by Liverpool’s recent displays might turn to Manchester City’s attack as they prepare for a trip to Bournemouth.

The Cherries are without a clean sheet so far this season and had one of the worst defences last season.

That said, Manchester City scored just once on their last visit to the Vitality Stadium, Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) getting the goal.

Either way, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) has made an excellent start to the new campaign, with four goals in his first two matches, which is certainly captainable form.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.6m) has begun 2019/20 in a similar vein, with three assists and four bonus points so far and a total score of 18.

Those invested in the Belgian to save money can probably feel more confident putting the armband on him than they did ahead of Gameweek 1.

Presenting a third fixture for us to consider are Spurs, who host Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies have already conceded four times this season, letting in three goals on their travels.

In Gameweek 1, Spurs had 31 shots at home against Aston Villa so we might expect a similar volume on Sunday afternoon.

That could be good news for Harry Kane (£11.0m), who scored twice in that match.

We should remember that Son Heung-min (£9.5m) will be back from suspension for Gameweek 3 and could improve Spurs going forward if he is handed a start by Mauricio Pochettino.

You can now vote in our latest captain poll either below or in the sidebar of our website.

Joe and David will be discussing the tricky debate live on our YouTube channel at 12:30pm BST.

hey guys, what to do with this lot (dont want to WC just yet, have 2 FTS)...

    Heaton Button
    VVD Robbo Rico Zouma AWB
    Sterling Salah Barkley Perez Dedeoncker
    Auba King Greenwood

Was thinking of getting rid of Barkley + Rico or Zouma.. for Lunstram + someone else to replace barkley... Either that or go balls out with Salah, auba and barkley out for Kane Mane and someone else

Patience has now cost me 0.2 with the drop of Fraser and Barkley. which of these moves look better for a -4 by taking out Fraser/Wilson/Barkley?

    A) Son+McGinn+Wesley
    B) Rashford+Trossard+McGinn
    C) Rashford+Lanzini+Mount
    D) Give Wilson one more week and only get Lanzini+Mount for free

The other option would be to wait another week but do a bit of a crazy move. Salah and Wilson to Martial and Kane.

        Pope
        VVD Robbo Digne Laporte

Agreed, I don't think its a bad team, but with that bit of knowledge and insight we've gained combined with the fixture shift, it could be a little prudent not doing it.

strongly agree - of course a wildcard can work at anytime but no chance I'd do that; Salah Sterling, nice defence, even Moura/Perez aren't complete no-hopers yet (although I do prefer Martial)

think I remember seeing your team and thinking there's not much wrong with it, 2/3 iffy players at most?

    4. Athletic Nasherbo
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 7 months ago

I had a similar decision. Also had people saying team wasn’t bad. Yet I was stuck at 1.5m overall rank and knew that I was going to struggle with price rises.

I’ve held my wildcard a bit longer in last two seasons and wasted them.

Felt like time was right to drop Liverpool def, get KdB, Pukki and United assets.

Yes. And no. It will now say no transfers. I started out with a - 8, and realised that it was neither going to catch the rises, and also had a bad error. And I was going to lose that 8.

So that top team is AFTER the - 8.

Was considering Siggy to Martial too. Just had a look at the stats and both have had the same amount of shots so far and Siggy has 2 more key passes. Siggy has also missed 1 big chance and created 1 big chance that wasn't converted so arguably should have a goal and an assist by now

Sheffield United defence looks alright. Lundstram the obvious one but if you're not convinced O'Connell looks quite good in that overlapping CB role

      Pieters seems a decent option

    Is this worth WC'ing Boys??

    Ryan
    AWB-VVD-Coleman-Cathcart
    Siggy-Salah-KDB-Maddy
    Aguero-Jota

    (Button-D'donker-Kelly-Greenwood)

    Scored 77 and 45
Looking a bit bleak at the moment.
Feel like Siggy and Maddison should go ??!

Looks alright, Siggy was never a pick for me.
      Sterling over Aguero.
Players that need to move on Siggy, Cathcart, Kelly and maybe Jota.

Is Heaton a good choice of keeper for next 2 gameweeks? Everton and Crystal Palace look to be impotent in attack

How many premium attackers you think is the right amount currently? Meaning players above 9.5m (Sterling, Salah, Kane, Auba, KDB, Son, Mane etc.)

Sterling + Salah/Mane/Kane + KDB/Son + Martial would be my 4 of choice, but Sterling is a clear must have

Managed to squeeze 4 in on the WC, with Martial also.
      Sterling, Mane, KDB, Martial, Mcginn
      Kane, Pukki
