Scout Squad

The Scout Squad picks for FPL Gameweek 4

The weekly precursor to the Scout Picks article returns ahead of Gameweek 4.

In this piece, our four regular panelists – editorial staff Paul, David, Geoff and Neale – each submit an 18-man squad of Fantasy assets (with the focus on the coming Gameweek) and elaborate on their notable inclusions/omissions.

The 72 nominations listed below will then be narrowed down to a squad of 14 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83m) ahead of the Gameweek 4 deadline at 11:30 BST on Saturday morning.

As we discussed last week, we are making some slight tweaks to the way we do Scout Squad and Scout Picks this season.

We have placed stricter regulations on our panelists: there are requirements for at least one £4.5m goalkeeper, at least one £4.5m or cheaper defender, at least one midfielder priced £6.0m or below and at least one forward priced at £7.0m or lower.

As was the case last year, each panelist is restricted to no more than three players from the same team.

We will also be adding a captaincy to the Scout Picks this season, with details of that revealed on Friday.

DAVID SAID…

Tom Heaton and Rui Patricio are perhaps left-field selections in the goalkeeper bracket but I fancy the clean sheet potential of their fixtures.

Crystal Palace scored the fewest home goals of any side that survived relegation last season, and looked similarly shy going forward in the first two matches of this campaign.

Meanwhile, Everton are really struggling to find the net in 2019/20, and are sure to meet a stiff Wolves defence, perhaps sitting deep having played European football a few days previously.

That’s why I’ve also included Conor Coady, the least likely Wolves defender to be rotated, and Frederic Guilbert, who impressed hugely for Aston Villa in Gameweek 3.

No Manchester City player created as many chances as Oleksandr Zinchenko against Bournemouth to encourage my interest in the left-back.

With Brighton’s attack unlikely to trouble the defending champions at the Etihad Stadium, could we be looking at a double-figure haul for Zinchenko?

Raheem Sterling should also do well against the Seagulls having scored in each of his matches so far this season, and displaying underlying statistics that indicate his form is sustainable.

I welcome Mohamed Salah back into my Scout Squad submission after foolishly doubting him in Gameweek 3. He might have a tough fixture at Burnley but if there’s any Liverpool player who can break the deadlock when not fatigued from European extra-time, it’s him.

Manuel Lanzini comes in as my West Ham midfielder as the obliging Norwich defence awaits. He has created more chances than any of his colleagues so far this season.

Meanwhile, Todd Cantwell also gets in as the Hammers defence doesn’t fill me with confidence either.

Sergio Aguero looked back to his vintage best in the recent win over Bournemouth and the injury to Gabriel Jesus has allowed him the freedom to more time on the pitch.

If I think that Sterling will impress against Brighton, then surely his more experienced forward colleague will too.

Teemu Pukki has become something of an auto-include at this point given his underlying data, while I can see goals in the north London derby for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

NEALE SAID…

The clean sheets will come eventually, either before the international break or after it.

But while there is a general dearth of shut-outs, it makes sense to back defenders who pose a threat at the other end of the pitch and who can compensate for any goals conceded with an attacking return or two.

Lucas Digne and Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s offensive qualities are well-documented but Emerson Palmieri is keeping pace with the pair of them this season: no FPL defender has had more goal attempts or shots on target than the Chelsea left-back.

Sheffield United’s backline has impressed me so far but I can’t seem them being the prolific scorers that Norwich are this season and indeed only two clubs have recorded fewer shots in the box than the Blades after three Gameweeks of 2019/20.

I can see a mentally spent Wolves side having to soak up a lot of pressure at Goodison Park on Sunday but Everton are far from prolific in front of goal, so if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side can do what Palace and Villa have managed and prevent the Toffees from scoring, then Willy Boly‘s bonus point magnetism could see him top-score on Merseyside.

There’ll be few sane Fantasy managers interested in a Watford defender given their ongoing struggles at the back but in Newcastle United, Javi Gracia’s troops face a club posing little goal threat (joint-second-bottom for big chances) and with numerous injury concerns going into Saturday’s match.

Matt Ritchie and Jetro Willems are both doubts, which could bode well for Kiko Femenia down the Watford right – the Hornets’ full-back is better going forward and no sub-£5.0m defender has registered as many penalty box touches so far this season.

A Manchester City triple-up speaks for itself, while Teemu Pukki and Sebastien Haller ought to get some joy out of each other’s defence: neither West Ham nor Norwich have kept a clean sheet so far this season and the two clubs have already shipped a combined 15 goals.

With Anthony Martial an injury doubt for Gameweek 4, a United positional rejig could see Marcus Rashford move up front and Daniel James shifted to the left flank at St. Mary’s.

The former Swansea City winger looks better (to me) on the left wing and his goal against Palace indeed arrived after he had swapped sides.

Outside of City and Liverpool assets, no FPL midfielder has had more shots from inside the box than James this season.

PAUL SAID…

A triple up on Manchester City looks advisable for the visit of Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Although I expect Sergio Aguero to add to his weekend brace at Bournemouth, the value offered by the cheaper Kevin De Bruyne means it’s hard to look past a double-up on the champions’ midfield when assessing their attack.

Goals should also be expected when West Ham and Norwich to head-to-head – both sides are among the bottom four defences for shots conceded in the box.

In terms of differentials, Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri is a standout pick at home to Sheffield United.

Compared with other FPL defenders, no one has bettered his six shots on goal, while the Italy international’s four efforts on target is a leading figure.

Daniel James sits in less than 4% of squads for his trip to Southampton.

Yet the Manchester United winger has fired six shots inside the box – more than any team-mate – and has scored in all but one of the opening three Gameweeks.

Roberto Firmino is another relatively overlooked option.

The Brazilian is only the sixth most popular Liverpool player in FPL, despite firing more shots (12) and efforts in the box (nine) than any team-mate.

He also has a fine record against his weekend hosts, Burnley, scoring three goals in their two meetings last season.

GEOFF SAID…

Looking for a first clean sheet of the season, Kepa Arrizabalaga hosts Sheffield United in Gameweek 4.

With Nathan Redmond possibly out of the Southampton team, David de Gea has a good chance for a shut-out on the south coast.

Tom Heaton is my final goalkeeper choice, facing a Crystal Palace side who beat Manchester United but then drew a blank against Colchester United on Tuesday evening.

If Liverpool can see off the threat of Ashely Barnes, Trent Alexander-Arnold could be poised for a big score with his strong attacking threat.

Second for both crosses and attempts from a defender, Lucas Digne could be in line for attacking points.

Emerson Palmieri is another looking like collecting attacking returns and the Blades offer a prime opportunity.

Caglar Soyuncu and Martin Kelly round out my defensive picks, both at a nice price with favourable home fixtures.

Little needs to be said about either Raheem Sterling or Mohamed Salah. Kevin De Bruyne has an assist in every game this season and I back him to continue that at home to Brighton.

I expect Mason Mount to recover in time for the weekend and continue his run of form, while Todd Cantwell is a nice enabler who is delivering the goods at present.

In attack I’ve gone for Sergio Aguero, indicating my strong belief in Manchester City’s potential this week.

Sebastian Haller has looked strong so far in the Premier League and could feast against a shaky Norwich defence.

I’m backing Jamie Vardy to continue where he left off in GW3 at home to Bournemouth, who have yet to keep a clean sheet.

Teemu Pukki has form strongly on his side and until that looks like stopping he is impossible to ignore.

Finally, I see Marcus Rashford bouncing back from his Gameweek 3 penalty miss. If he’d scored it, he would have recorded attacking returns in three straight matches – and whether Martial is fit for the weekend or not, I see Rashford scoring well.

THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Before most Gameweeks, we nominate a Fantasy manager to challenge our Scout Picks with a starting XI of their own.

The Community Champion who has the biggest lead over the Scouts during 2019/20 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

The Community Champion for Gameweek 4 is InsaneFC, who recorded a best-ever finish of 331st in 2015/16.

Last week, FPL Mike the Knight beat the Scout Picks 46-44.

Hot Toddy‘s winning margin of ten points (69-59) in Gameweek 2 is the one to beat so far.

Whilst it’s not directly FPL related, one of the big talking points at the weekend was the impact of VAR.

There were a number of contentious decisions made already this season where VAR have either not been involved where people think is should or where VAR has when it shouldn’t.

Take this weekend, and Harry Kane.

Brought down by Lascelles in the box, both the ref and VAR believe it was not worth a penalty, much to the dismay of Spurs fans. Should VAR have intervened?

      https://streamable.com/5tsxi

      Other examples include:

      Azpilicueta kicked - https://twitter.com/okolanin/status/1165539939104301056?s=20
      David Silva “stamped” - https://streamable.com/u77k9?fbclid=IwAR2HSgpgKJP7P7bClcVH4fT6wqHzCi_4jfggHkhcowR5Vr3Z0k-EC2S3HYk
Cahill not sent off vs Manchester United - https://streamable.com/ysjdb
Abraham pen not retaken vs Liverpool in Super Cup final (Adrian off his line) - https://twitter.com/alanmehdizadeh/status/1161757169949249537?s=20
Kelly on Martial not penalised - https://streamable.com/9qvdq

Then there’s the cases where VAR has been involved where some argue it shouldn’t:

Sterling ruled offside vs West Ham - https://twitter.com/ESPNFC/status/1160189495532281856?s=20

(I don’t necessarily believe VAR was wrong in any or all of these, just giving examples)

Right now, to me at least, VAR feels slow and clunky and it’s still not fulfilling it’s purpose. Decisions take a long time, it’s not clear how they reach their conclusions and as a result you get these arguments. That being said, I’m for VAR, but it needs some work.

      What’s your opinion on VAR?
What, if anything, needs to be changed?

For a start, showing the replays on the big screen couldn’t hurt… right?

For me it’s killing the atmosphere. Nothing beats a proper celebration and instead everyone is just waiting.

They also need to change the handball in the box rule and get some technology for automated offsides.

Yeah hate that. Nothing kills the excitement of your team scoring faster than a pointless VAR check. Needs to checked faster I think or a VAR check get announced immediately after the ball goes in.

Surprised they haven't implemented the tech yet to help linesmen - not sure what the exact solution would be, but surely there can be a fairly low cost method.

Has it killed the atmosphere? Haven't experienced a VAR incident while at a game yet but those that I've watched on tv it seems as though the celebrations happen as normal and people only realise VAR is in play once they've calmed down. It almost adds a secondary celebration (for one team) rather than remove the first. Like I say, haven't been there in person yet though.

At the start people were just celebrating as normal but now they’re starting to expect the VAR check.

Take Sterling’s chip over the keeper against West Ham. He barely celebrated after having a previous one ruled out and the thought of last years UCL

I agree, but the fact that they've hit so many obvious stumbling blocks with naivety is frustrating to many I think. Won't kill them to take a look at what happens in other leagues and other sports and develop it from that, rather than go through the same mistakes that others have.

I'm sure with all the stick they are getting they are doing this and constantly reviewing. They'll get there in the end - people like Shearer and Lineker constantly banging on about it doesn't help though.

my main thing with VAR and what baffles me is how VAR only have a couple of camera angles for replays, sometimes the best angle possible for the 'event' they don't have access too! So they are having to base their decision with less information than we have sat on our settee at home when Sky are showing 6/7 different angles.

It seemed much more accurate in the World Cup where the refs were always going to the screens outside the pitch to check. Here some decisions made have been ludicrous.
Rodrigo pen not given, Azpi pen not given, decisions in the United game.
Ir seems as if the refs can't be bothered to check every single incident properly and then you wonder why we have VAR if that's the case

Seems to me like they felt the game was slowing too much at the world cup, so tried to cut down on the time taken for these reviews by skimming over them - perhaps gone too far the other way.

The ones that frustrate me are where it's painfully clear the ref was correct from the first replay, but we still spend 2 minutes looking at different angles for no apparent reason.

Yeah, those are a drag as well. It seems to be implemented better in other leagues so maybe they should take a look elsewhere and take some notes.
For me, i don't see the point of half and half. Either you don't use it or check everything and then give obvious decisions. Most of the decisions you mentioned above are clear pens or fouls

Would it slow the game down too much?

If you have trained officials with more camera angles than what the ref saw, why can't they overrule him?

Yeah big supporter of this - love it in rugby.

Sadly I suspect the rugby lads are far better mannered than footballers on the pitch, so not sure if TV companies would be too keen, who have the major driving force there.

Though, the fines racked up from players getting caught swearing could probably pay for any future updates to VAR 😉

I thought it would mean players going down under very little contact and getting a pen every time (because the replay would almost always show contact) but I'm glad they've generally not gone down that route (City pen against West Ham an exception, but that was Mike Dean's fault). This would have made the game like Basketball and Rugby which have too many penalty points and are almost unwatchable as a result 😀

Yeah agree with that too, but you have to wonder where the line gets drawn - is it on the ref to decide? Jesus goal was disallowed by the finest of margins because by the letter of the law Sterling was offside, but how do you follow the exact letter of the law when looking at something like Azpilicueta's case or Kane's case?

Some clear explanations after the incident from either the ref or the VAR studios would help I think.

the Kane one wasn't given because he clearly moved his body/legs towards Lascelles and went over him - you can bet Kane would not have moved his body like that if he hadn't seen Lascelles sprawled out like that.

Having said that, I captained Kane 😀 and think just, based on the desperation of Lascelles mainly, that it was a pen - but I can definitely see why they didn't give it:

I don't like it, or at least I don't like the way it is being used. As a neutral I don't want to see great goals chalked off because someone's shoulder was 1cm 'offside'. I think the ambiguity inherent in the 'clear and obvious error' is causing too many problems. I still think that the best solution would be for each team to have three 'challenges' in each match, which when used prompt the match referee (not the people in the VAR review room) to go and consult the pitchside screen.

We need a ref microphone system just like in NFL in order to understand decisions made by the ref and VAR. The Martial and Kane pens were blatantly obvious, would have loved to hear a stupid explanation as to why they weren't given.

I’ve been pretty impressed overall. It’ll get faster and slicker and while frustrating if decisions go against your team I’m 110% in favour of the right decision being got to.

Change is always resisted and you can’t please everyone, but like in cricket and rugby in a few years time it will seem crazy how we got by without it.

I don’t like the new handball rule but at least it’s clear. Offside is also either or though I’d like to see an ‘umpires call’ style where the linesmen calls and if it’s marginal (say less than a cm) then on field decision.

Penalties etc can never 100% be correct as it’s still a human decision open for interpretation. Hopefully all howlers will go but you’ll still get the off marginal decision go for or against and that’s just life.

They seem to have set a very high threshold for overruling the decisions of the referee as it stands. I'm kind of ok with that but it does mean we're seeing plenty of incidents where you'd probably say 8 out of 10 referees would give a penalty but because there's an argument to be had for not giving it there's no need to change the decision. It's like the margin for umpire's call on an lbw being widened by 3 inches - you'd almost never change the original verdict which makes it a little pointless.

Feels like it's better at ruling out goals (Dunk at the weekend for example). Basically it's being used to try to see things the ref might have missed and generally I like that approach, definitely needs refinement though.

Slightly tangential because it isn't the (direct) fault of VAR but the new rule about any sort of glance off an attacking player's arm in the build up to a goal means it is ruled out is crap. A proper 'traditional' handball is fair but changing the rule so that it there are fewer shades of grey involved is a terrible way to go.

Fully agree, the only thing it is used for now is either to rule out a goal in case the ref misses something or to check if a player was offside etc. It is not being used proactively to make defenders cleaner and allow more goals which is what the fans want to see because if it did that then the ref would look an idiot for missing pens, pull backs, obstructions etc.

Stupid handball rule should be against def as well as fwd if its there at all. How can you have one rule for one player and one for another unless you want less goals again.

I don’t think he needs to lose a substitute over it! But if he throws the flag the ref then comes to check on the monitor off the field or it goes up to the Var room. Manager would need a person working a monitor too though as it would be very hard for them to notice everything

I don’t like it. Decisions still aren’t 100% correct so what’s the point? People argue that it works in other sports, but football is the biggest sport in the world. Without that excitement when a goal goes in what’s the point in people spending big money every week to go to the games? It works in cricket, great. Guess what? You don’t want football to be like cricket. You don’t want football to be like rugby. You don’t want football to be like tennis. Because they make less money and get less viewers. It’s not the law, or life and death, so it doesn’t matter if decisions are 100% right. Nobody was going to stop going to games because an offside goal was given, eventually they might if they can no longer celebrate their team scoring because it gets ruled out so often.

I think VAR only overrules definite mistakes and anything subjective goes with the ref's decision. I'm not sure if refs are a bit reluctant to give penalty decisions and waiting for VAR to do it.

Even as a Newcastle fan, I expected the Kane penalty to be given after the replay. You could maybe weakly argue that Kane had pushed the ball too far wide and may not have got to it or that Lascelles stumbled and didn't mean to bring Kane down.

One thing to note is that Sanches pulled Muto down later on, well away from the box, in a similar but much more blatant manner and the ref just waved play on.

I for one didn’t think the Kane incident was a penalty. If it’s clear and obvious VAR will overrule but I don’t think that was so it’s down to personal opinion then. Sure you have to stick with the referees decision really at that point.

I think VAR is really good. It kills the atmosphere but atleast the other team wont feel the got robbed.
As for decisions being wrong its not VARs fault. Its the VAR refree. And they should have a 360 degree camera view for VAR.

I think there needs to be 2 MAIN changes. Although this is asking too much:

          1) it's clear that the rules (ex in-box handball) are interpreted differently, especially in different leagues.

so (1) is to start with that. with unifying the rules.

          2) people dont understand when and why VAR is used.

I have a solution for that, which is both fair, and keeps the atmosphere up:

Each team will have x amounts of asking the referree to check VAR. Just like Tennis

You THINK it's an offside? let the captain ask the ref. That forces players and managers to stay awake, and its up to their own merit to ask for a check.

That also solves the problem of VAR favoring some teams over others.

That way, ud still have the 2-3 ghost goals a year, but you'd say its the player's fault not noticing/asking for a check.

          And it's only fair.

            1. Last season, too many penalties were awarded when players had dived with no contact whatsoever. Thanks to VAR, that no longer happens. There were also accusations of players diving when they hadn't, and this now happens less often too.

            2. There have been a few cases in which many (but not all) refs might have awarded a penalty but the on-field ref did not. VAR upholds the ref's decision in such cases unless it was a clear and obvious error, which is in line with IFAB's instructions. The pitch-side monitor should not be consulted in such cases, but if the VAR does spot something that the ref might have missed, then I would hope that the VAR official would discuss this with the ref before the final decision is made.

            3. I don't like these borderline offside decisions where the player is only offside by 1mm. I would prefer the player to consider level and not offside if the distance is less than say 2cm.

            4. In red card checks, VAR might also have spotted something that the ref hadn't. In such cases, I would hope that the VAR official would bring this to the attention of the ref before automatically deciding that his decision, though quite likely wrong, was not a clear and obvious mistake.

            5. When facing a penalty, the IFAB instructions are that VAR should check that the goalkeeper still has one foot on the line at the point when the penalty taker kicks the ball. This caused a lot of problems in the Women's World Cup, and as a result the Premier League and Bundesliga have decided not to use VAR for this purpose. They are however going against the IFAB instructions.

            http://www.insideworldfootball.com/2019/08/23/ifab-tells-premier-league-refs-follow-var-rules-guidelines/

"but if the VAR does spot something that the ref might have missed, then I would hope that the VAR official would discuss this with the ref before the final decision is made." This is the crux of the matter, that plus "clear and obvious mistake" it should have nothing to do with the ref who made the original decision and the var officials should be able to change and on field call if it is likely to be considered wrong. For me they are missing blatant penalties and the only thing var is being used for is to either back up the ref or rule out goals. It will never be accepted unless it is used for good as well as negative and the refs have to lose their egos for this to be allowed.

Already used my WC, but if I would use it this week, my team would be:

          Pope (4.0)
TAA Laporte Digne (Soyuncu) (4.0-4.5: Kelly/Lundstram/Fuchs/Femenia)
Sterling KDB Pepe Cantwell 6.0-6.5 mid: Lanzini/James/Mount/Trossard
          Pukki Firmino (6.5 forward: Barnes/Jota)

Risks: Firmino over Salah/Mane, Pepe over Auba, guessing which 6-6.5M mid to bet on.
Strengths: Solid DEF trio, Sterling + KDB, Cantwell + Pukki with 3rd firward to rotate with, flexible 3-5-2 3-4-3 4-4-2 formation switches.
          Captain choices: Sterling (default), Pukki

Why are people getting rid of Martial? He has the int. break to recover from the injury. Do people just think he's a bad pick now?

Many good picks in midfield at similar or often lower price.

United's form is very unpredictable and you cannot rule a drop in performances like we have seen in 2nd part of last season.

Performances like the ones vs Palace aren’t one off’s.

Someone give me the pros and cons of Rose. I own him so take that into account.
He plays for a top six side albeit unsettled. He scores at a reasonable rate when he plays. He does not do cameos. Either he plays or he doesn't. When the the window shuts spurs will settle down. He cost a 5.5 so not a serious money on the bench issue.
The downside is experts, this site and in general I am advised to get rid. I could do for Emerson which I fancy but Sen zinch and many others seem to be sideways steps. Son a Citeh player maybe but could block a threesome up front. TALK TO ME GUYS.

The Newcastle match was really an opportunity for the Spurs fullbacks to attack and get crosses in. They both failed to do it with any sort of quality and Spurs toiled trying to attack through the centre. I'd keep against Arsenal, then see how he does as Spurs do have decent fixtures but be mindful of any rotation.

Haller and KDB likely to score more than Kane and Perez IMO. After this week, it is the international break too. So you might have other pressing transfers to make if someone gets injured. So better to do it now for a hit.
