Which ‘fourth midfielder’ options have impressed so far this season?

A cost-effective fourth midfielder that can rival the premium options for points potential is often the key that unlocks a perfect Fantasy Premier League team.

Managers across the world will be searching for the best candidates for this position over the international break, especially those on a Wildcard.

In order to find them, we have compared a handful of midfielders priced at £6.5m or below to see how they got on in the first four Gameweeks.

The key is to find which of them is offering sustainable output from Gameweek 5 onwards which means analysing their underlying statistics.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Who carries the best goal threat?

    Heaton
    TAA Digne Lundstram
    Sterling(vc) Salah(c) Mount Zaha
    Haller Wilson Pukki

    Button Donk Kelly Aarons

I'm waiting until internationals are played but is the best way to get KDB by taking a hit?

    Zaha/Mount > KDB
    Pukki > Greenwood

Mid term I also want to do

    Kelly > Soyuncu

    Thoughts please?

      Upgrade zaha instead of mount.

Other option in attack would be downgrade on wilson to someone like barnes.

Soyuncu - decent player. Would prob just swtich aarons (if kelly still playing)

    Which option?
    A) TAA & Robinson
    or
    B) AWB & Mount

A for me, although I took Robinson out nice of him to troll me with 11 pointer! Any particular reason you are favoring him over the likes of Cantwell etc?

I already have Cantwell, I have exact money to do AWB & Mount to TAA & Robinson but not sure its worth losing Mount, although really want TAA.

    Enjoyed reading that, nice one.

Hard to look past Mount, fixtures after Wolves and Liverpool are so good, but for those on a WC, I'd be tempted to go with Trossard and switch to Mount GW7.

Yeah I don’t expect much in the next two, but Wolves are leaking and Doherty and Boly will miss the game

Leaking? Nah, I'm not convinced. Unfortunate to ship three against Everton, IMO, conceded only one against Burnley, one against Man Utd and shut Leicester out.

They are not water tight by any means. EL is a big factor for them. Matches come much faster than they're used to.

I didn't say they were water tight, I said they're not leaking too many goals. The next Europa tie is at home too, which will help.

Better than away match for sure. But last year they had a week to prepare for the next opponent. Now it's half that, and EL takes some focus of PL campaign. I just don't feel their def's are as good option as last year. Similar thing happened with Burnley last season as they were in europe.

I have to agree with you, think Wolves will struggle this season. Their players have also traveled for International duty with the likes of Jiminez and Jota coming in late, it will be difficult for them imo. Can't deny their talent as a team but even bigger teams struggle playing on Thursday away and coming back home on Friday and the match is on a Sunday away.

I see where you're coming from, the Europa League is demanding, but looking at non-penalty xG conceded stats, they sit third, only behind the Manchester clubs. Considering they've played Leicester, Man Utd, Burnley and Everton, I think that's pretty good.

Thing is with Burnley in Europe, is they were out of the competition by the end of August but it clearly affected they're league form. Wolves are a much better side with better players than Burnley tho. Be interesting to see how it unfolds.

They weren't really unfortunate, just been outplayed. Unless they get knocked out of EL in group stages, top 10 seems unlikely for them this year.

    Hi all,

Hopefully a thought that is going through many managers minds, especially if they have hit the WC.

Picking on two which ones would you go for and if so why? I have changed my mind a million times and its only Thursday ha!

    Aguero
    Sterling
    KDB

I'm currently sitting on Sterling and KDB ..... but then i look at the fixtures and i want Aguero and Sterling!

Thoughts on this would be appreicated!

For value I think KDB has to be one and then it comes down to personal preference between Sterling and Aguero. Sorry that probably doesn't help you much.

KDB is the value and should offer consistent returns. Aguero can bring in the big hauls(one jesus is back - this will limit him.

Will depend on the balance of your side how many MC/Liv players you have.

      currently on Sterling/KDB myself

Yeah, same combo for me too.

Nothing wrong with Kun but I'm wary of premium strikers now because guys like Raz, Mo and Mane can match their scoring potential.

I'd personally want another city attacker - especially with Norwich and Watford upcoming.

I know Emerson has good underlying attacking threat but gathering only 4 points over 4 game weeks is he really worth the investment currently.

I would down grade him to a 4.5 (still got 3 very good defenders) use that 3mil on McGinn then find the extra cash from downgrading maybe Barnes (admittedly nice fixtures) or Haller and get KDB.

I have the exact funds to do Pukki to Haller.
Should I prioritise this or just do robbo to taa.

I want taa so badly but I also think that Haller will overscore pukki

I would chase TAA more than pukki to haller. Pukki will tick nicely after this week.

Just out of curiosity, how many minus points would warrant a wild card for you? -8, -12? etc...

      Depends on your team

-12 or 5+ change to your team that looks like very good upgrades.

For everyone on a WC; I wouldn't get in Lundstram. I'm looking at getting rid. You'd only want to play him once in the next 8.

Good luck finding another 4m defender that plays every week

Perma-bench yes. I'm using him as rotation with Kelly atm. I'd be looking at Lund to Burnley 4.5 defender.

Lundstram should be your 5th defender, or 4th if you’re playing 3 at the back.

I've gone 4 atb and rotated Lunds and Kelly. VVD TAA and Digne are my mainstays. Now I'm looking at getting rid of Kelly or Lunds in GW6. Burnley or BHA def coming in.

What do you expect from a 4.0 defender?

My team. 0.3 itb. 0 ft.

    Pope
    Robbo Ota Digne
Sterling Salah (C) KDB McGinn Trossard
    Haller Pukki

    Button Greenwood Rico Gibson

Anything pressing here? What should I expect from McGinn and to an extent Pukki/Trossard? Also bench is very weak.

Any 4,0 defenders except from Kelly and Rico who are expected to play next gameweek?

Why are the players who left this summer still in the teams? like Mignolet, Smalling, Knockaert etc..

Do you know if it will have an update soon?

They'll be there all season now as they've still been selected by teams, ignore them.

    Which is better?
    A. Laporte & Kane > Matip & Agureo
    B. Mount & Kane > KDB & Haller

A imo.. Even though I'm not confident shipping Kane out before a homegame vs CRP is wise.

Did it prior to gw4 my self, but it made sense thento, as Spurs played away to Arsenal. I would prolly just do Laporte -> Otamendi

If I do Otamendi I wouldn’t be able to get Agureo or KDB as I have Sterling & Zinc. Could just do Laporte > Matip this week and do Kane > Agureo next week?

I see. Then yes sure. If you can afford TAA and don't have him that would be prefered. But definetely get Matip if not

Especially if A involves a hit, I would be reluctant doing Kane -> Aguero -4
