Which ‘fourth midfielder’ options have impressed so far this season?

A cost-effective fourth midfielder that can rival the premium options for points potential is often the key that unlocks a perfect Fantasy Premier League team.

Managers across the world will be searching for the best candidates for this position over the international break, especially those on a Wildcard.

In order to find them, we have compared a handful of midfielders priced at £6.5m or below to see how they got on in the first four Gameweeks.

The key is to find which of them is offering sustainable output from Gameweek 5 onwards which means analysing their underlying statistics.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

      Seems nice. Don´t particularly like that double 4m defenders on bench as they can get you minus points if one of your big guns don´t play. And SHU awful fixtures and Hanley is norwich, that´s a no go. Also, Everton have fine fixtures but i would want a back up in GW7 for Digne, and points difference between TAA and VVD is 3, so imo VVD is as good as TAA, in the sense you get one 4.5 defender who you actually can play from time to time

      Jeez guys, give him a break, he's not saying he's Messi.

      I played at a decent-ish level regionally when I was younger, went to a few trials, but I'm now limited to 5 a side every Wednesday. My son is 6 tho and is training once a week with a local club, he loves defending which is nice and a bit of a rarity these days.

          I'd consider taking out Mount ahead of Wolves and Liverpool. Look to get him in GW7. If you want someone around the same price point, Trossard could do well. I'd also consider taking out Pukki - City, Burnley and Palace's defences have impressed so far, think there could be more value in Barnes over the next three.

    Obviously there is an injury cloud, but Martial at 7.5 OOP striker for United with 8.6% ownership (less once break is over) could be such an amazing differential. His points per minute over the last few seasons rivals that of the best in the game

        Ashley Barnes' minutes per chance (21.7) is insane when you consider he plays for Burnley and the fixtures they've had.

        For comparison - Aguero(20.5), Firmino(20.4), Rashford(22.2), Abraham(23.1), Pukki(25.2), Kane(27.7), Auba(27.7), Haller(30), C.Wilson(84.5)

        Is anyone else considering bringing in an Arsenal defender? On paper their fixtures look very appealing, they only play 1 of the top 6 in their next 11 fixtures, although it's a risk it could well pay off. Thinking of Sokratis or AMN although Bellerin will come back into the equation soon. I'm looking for a AWB replacement myself.

          Leno looks good value, cam’t Touch the defenders yet as you say bellerin is back soon but AMN would have been perfect. If Luiz starts getting the role he had for Sarri then his pings over the top for Auba and Pepe would mean lots of assists but want to see their defence shape up before spending that much. Leno should be great with the fixtures

          If I was on a wildcard, I wouldn't double on Liverpool's defence, Trent is enough. Love the Otamendi, Pepe and Trossard picks, not so keen on James, and I'd probably upgrade him by removing Robertson, but that's just me. Good luck.

            Hm I could do Robbo to Digne I guess. I like James though nailed in the United attack for 6m and makes a big impression, nice stats too. Any extra cash will be used to get salah in over Aguero/Sterling should I change my mind again. Digne just doesn’t feel right though and if i’m Going salahless I will want the full backs to stop my bum chewing the seat every pool game

            Emery hasn’r Subbed Pepe off early yet, and it’s because his alternative wingers are dog poo. On all set pieces and taking shots for fun getting in great positions he is a no brainer for me. But yeah the problem is missing out on KDB but I am okay with that as I have Ota sterling and Aguero. I did try and go down the 4 premium route with Sterling Salah, KDB and Pepe but there were just too many dodgy players in there

            I thought Azpilicueta being their right back, he might have come in at 4.5.
