The minutes played by FPL assets in first round of international matches

The first round of international matches went off largely without a hitch for Fantasy Premier League assets.

There were very few injuries to report after the first day of action, although there is still plenty of football to be played between now and Gameweek 5.

The biggest news as things stand is a groin injury to Brighton midfielder Leandro Trossard (£6.0m), who has now pulled out of the Belgium squad and could face several weeks out.

We’ve rounded up all the latest matches in this Scout Notes article, documenting how many minutes each FPL asset played.

Euro 2020 qualifying

Group J

Finland 1-0 Greece

Teemu Pukki in action for Finland during the international break
  • Teemu Pukki – 85 minutes
  • Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 90 minutes

Norwich striker Teemu Pukki (£7.0m) continued his impressive start to the season as he helped Finland to an important Euro 2020 qualifying win over Greece.

He netted the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, his sixth goal in all competitions of the 2019/20 campaign.

While his threat for Norwich has already been well-established this season, a question still hangs over the penalty-taker at Carrow Road.

Those who watched Pukki calmly dispatch his against Greece may believe that he has a chance at becoming the designated taker moving forward, although only time will tell.

Also involved in this match was Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£5.0m) who played 90 minutes for Greece.

Armenia 1-3 Italy

  • Emerson Palmieri – 90 minutes
  • Jorginho – 90 minutes

After showing promise in the first four Gameweeks, Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) got his first attacking return of the campaign on international duty with Italy.

During a 3-1 Euro 2020 qualifier win over Armenia, the left-back provided the assist for Andrea Belotti’s equaliser in the 28th minute.

That will be of interest to those interested in Emerson, given his impressive underlying statistics so far this season.

He played 90 minutes against Armenia, as did colleague Jorginho (£5.0m). Meanwhile, Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, currently on loan at AS Roma until the end of the season, played for the opposition.

Bosnia 5-0 Liechtenstein

  • Sead Kolašinac – 90 minutes
  • Muhamed Bešić – 0 minutes

There was minimal FPL involvement in Bosnia’s big 5-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Arsenal defender Sead Kolašinac (£5.4m) played 90 minutes at left-back while Sheffield United midfielder Muhamed Bešić (£4.5m), still yet to make a Premier League appearance in 2019/20, was an unused substitute.

The fact that he is not getting game-time for his nation, as well as the Blades, will be a small piece of welcome news to any John Lundstram (£4.2m) worrying about Bešić’s chances of breaking into the first-team at Bramall Lane.

Group D

Republic of Ireland 1-1 Switzerland

Sheffield United forward David McGoldrick scored for Republic of Ireland on Thursday
  • Enda Stevens – 90 minutes
  • Shane Duffy – 90 minutes
  • Seamus Coleman – 90 minutes
  • Jeff Hendrick – 90 minutes
  • David McGoldrick – 90 minutes
  • Conor Hourihane – 82 minutes
  • Callum Robinson – 58 minutes
  • John Egan – 0 minutes
  • Kevin Long – 0 minutes
  • Mark Travers – 0 minutes
  • Fabian Schär – 90 minutes
  • Granit Xhaka – 90 minutes
  • Albian Ajeti – 4 minutes

Fabian Schär (£5.0m) demonstrated his goal threat once again on Thursday night, this time on international duty with Switzerland.

His latest strike was one any attacking midfielder would have been proud of as he came out of defence, not only to start the move but finish it too.

Schär continued his run into the Republic of Ireland penalty area after one-two, slotting past Darren Randolph with ease.

Newcastle fans will be hoping he can continue to bring that sort of attacking play to the Premier League upon his return.

Meanwhile, there was a large contingent of FPL assets in action for the Republic of Ireland, including their goal-scorer David McGoldrick (£5.5m).

Mick McCarthy’s side did not have much chance to get on the front-foot, with Switzerland largely dominating possession, but McGoldrick asked some good questions at the right time.

He showed good pace on the counter in the first-half, his cross nearly setting up club-mate Callum Robinson (£5.3m) and it was his header in the last five minutes that levelled the game.

Also involved for the Republic of Ireland were Enda Stevens (£5.0m), Shane Duffy (£5.0m), Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) and Jeff Hendrick (£5.4m), who all got 90 minutes while Aston Villa’s Conor Hourihane (£5.0m) played for 82.

Meanwhile, Mark Travers (£4.4m), John Egan (£4.5m) and Kevin Long (£4.5m) were unused substitutes.

Gibraltar 0-6 Denmark

  • Kasper Schmeichel – 90 minutes
  • Andreas Christensen – 90 minutes
  • Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 90 minutes
  • Christian Eriksen – 90 minutes
  • Philip Billing – 0 minutes

Following a summer of heavy transfer speculation and time on the Spurs bench, Christian Eriksen (£8.8m) was the star of Denmark’s big win over Gibraltar on Thursday night.

He scored twice and provided an assist in a 6-0 victory, one of his goals coming from the penalty spot.

However, it would be hard to read too much into his performance given the very low quality of opposition.

Also involved for Denmark were goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m), defender Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) and Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (£4.9m), who all got 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s Philip Billing (£5.0m) was an unused substitute.

Group F

Romania 1-2 Spain

Dani Ceballos played an important part in Spain’s win over Romania
  • Kepa Arrizabalaga – 90 minutes
  • Dani Ceballos – 77 minutes
  • David de Gea – 0 minutes
  • Rodri – 0 minutes

Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) was the star of the show for Spain as they beat Romania 2-1 on Thursday night.

The Chelsea goalkeeper has recently ousted David de Gea (£5.6m) as the number one for his country, consigning the Manchester United man to life as an unused substitute.

He produced an incredible stop towards the end of this Euro 2020 qualifier to deny Reading striker George Puscas.

Also involved for Spain was Dani Ceballos (£5.7m), whose passing ability led to Paco Alcácer’s 47th-minute goal, although he did not get an assist for himself.

Romania’s goal was scored by former Brighton forward Florin Andone.

Faroe Islands 0-4 Sweden

  • Victor Lindelöf – 90 minutes
  • Emil Krafth – 45 minutes

Victor Lindelöf (£5.5m) played 90 minutes and scored as Sweden beat the Faroe Island 4-0 on Thursday night.

Also involved against lowly opposition was Newcastle defender Emil Krafth (£4.5m) who came on at half-time.

Norway 2-0 Malta

  • Joshua King – 58 minutes

Bournemouth’s Joshua King (£6.4m) reminded Fantasy managers of his credentials for his club’s penalties on Thursday night.

The forward netted from the spot as Norway beat Malta 2-0 in a Euro 2020 qualifying match.

Those interested in King for the upcoming Gameweeks will probably be pleased to know he was substituted in the 58th minute ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Georgia.

International friendlies

Chile 0-0 Argentina

Giovani Lo Celso was forced off for Argentina against Chile
  • Claudio Bravo – 90 minutes
  • Nicolas Otamendi – 90 minutes
  • Giovani Lo Celso – 53 minutes
  • Roberto Pereyra – 0 minutes
  • Manuel Lanzini – 0 minutes
  • Marcos Rojo – 0 minutes

Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso (£7.4m) limped off during Argentina’s 0-0 draw with Chile in the early hours of Friday morning.

However, the player himself has described the problem as “not something to worry about” and, as things stand, there has been no statement or update either from Argentina or Spurs.

Manchester City pair Claudio Bravo (£4.9m) and Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m) both played 90 minutes opposite each other while Roberto Pereyra (£5.9m), Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m) and Marcos Rojo (£4.9m) were all unused substitutes.

Japan 2-0 Paraguay

  • Maya Yoshida – 90 minutes
  • Fabian Balbuena – 90 minutes
  • Miguel Almirón – 90 minutes

Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) played 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet for Japan against Paraguay this week.

Meanwhile, Fabian Balbuena (£4.4m) and Miguel Almirón (£5.9m) were both involved against the Saints man.

The latter was deployed in a number 10 role but is still waiting for his first attacking return this season.

South Korea 2-2 Georgia

  • Son Heung-min – 62 minutes

Son Heung-min‘s (£9.5m) latest outing with South Korea was kept nice and short ahead of Gameweek 5.

He played 62 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Georgia, providing the assist for Hwang Uj-jo’s 48th-minute goal.

Northern Ireland 1-0 Luxembourg

  • Bailey Peacock-Farrell – 67 minutes
  • Michael McGovern – 23 minutes
  • Jamal Lewis – 0 minutes

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill named a youthful side to face Luxembourg on Thursday night.

The only FPL assets to get any minutes were Burnley and Norwich’s reserve goalkeepers.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell (£4.5m) started the match and was replaced by Michael McGovern (£4.0m) in the 67th minute.

The latter’s club-mate Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) was an unused substitute while Jonny Evans (£5.0m) and Craig Cathcart (£4.4m) were both left out of the match-day squad.

UEFA U21 Championship qualifiers

Portugal Under-21s 4-0 Gibraltar Under-21s

  • Rúben Vinagre – 90 minutes
  • Domingos Quina – 45 minutes
  • Pedro Neto – 45 minutes

There were three Premier League players in action for Portugal’s Under-21s on Thursday night.

Wolves defender Rúben Vinagre (£4.4m) played 90 minutes while club-mate Pedro Neto (£5.0m) was substituted at half-time.

Also replaced at the break was Watford midfielder Domingos Quina (£4.5m).

Under-20s Elite League

England Under-20s 0-0 Netherlands Under-20s

  • Angel Gomes – 90 minutes
  • Lewis Gibson – 0 minutes

Manchester midfielder Angel Gomes (£4.9m) played 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw with Netherlands Under-20s on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, Everton defender Lewis Gibson (£4.4m) was an unused substitute.

So do we have a verdict yet on buying / holding the more expensive defenders? (6.5 / 7m)

I went heavy on them early season but shed them over the first few GWs.

TAA in the course of the season will outscore anyone priced 7.0m or less regardless of position.

The equation looks different now that City have 5.5 options (plural).

Think all of the Liverpool 3 will prove value held long enough.

I still think TAA and Robertson at 7m are more valuable than the likes of Mount, James, Trossard etc in mid (Or most midfielders really except the 10+ assets). None of those midfielders will hit 200 points, but the Liverpool defence has the potential to do so.

Asked this in the other article, but here we go again:
Is a Liverpool defensive double-up with Van Dijk and Matip a bad idea?
Other option is getting Ota, but feel like Pool will get a CS against Newcastle while Norwich might score, at home, against a City defence made up of Stones & Ota.

    Any thoughts?

    1. The Ejiptian King

I'd keep a double up if I already had it but wouldn't look to get an extra Liverpool defender in.

TAA is the man to have from Pool defence, and yes double up against Newcastle sounds good.

Worth waiting to see how City's defence will perform wihout their main man.

If I pick TAA I'd have to bring in a 5.1 defender... And can't for the life of me pick one. Already have Pope in goal, so don't want a double up. Don't trust the Arsenal defenders...

Also, given the fixtures I'd much prefer Ota to Matip if you don't already have 3 City

        1. Dion D's Solo Shower
          • 6 Years

I'd just feel more comfortable switching in Ota for next GW, when they're at home and we get to see how they perform without Laporte. Norwich are pretty dangerous.
So Matip would basically be a 1 GW punt before getting in Ota.

          1. Majestic Chanka
            • 7 Years
            4 years, 7 months ago

I’m general I would not make a transfer for 1GW only, if you want Ota after then I would just go for him now.

City can clean any game, home/away doesn’t really matter too much.

          2. AndyCook
              4 years, 7 months ago

One gameweek punt with a maximum upside of 4 points is mad, not worth the transfers

10 goals in 59 apps for Schar. (Club & Country)

Ceballos is this year's Gundogan. Every year there's a mid priced option that really isn't a goalscorer that performs well for 2 early gameweeks and everyone gets on him, only for said player to do nothing for the rest of the season...

Disagree. He’s looked a cut above in the minutes played. Assured & lively when he came on in the Derby. Arsenals run of fixtures will establish him in the Prem

Is that really a risk you want to take at this early stage of the season?

And why do that when there are City assets with a potentially better fixture that you can use the armband on?

Nothing major as Pope is fit and is your set and forget keeper

But I’d do Micheal McGovern to David Button over a burned transfer.

If Tim Krul gets injured Ralf Fahrmann comes into team.

If Matt Ryan gets injured David comes in to starting line up.

Michael doesn’t even make match day squads.

So there is a clear difference but with extreme minimal likelihood that it matters but rather than waste a transfer that’s what I would definitely do.

I'd probably take a punt on a striker for a week. Gray, wood, king, adams etc. All are comfortably outperforming Jota stats wise and have better fixtures

Could do with some help with my team.. In freefall at the moment (3.2 OR rank) but have 2FTs and I can easily get 11 out so not in complete danger and Rashford/Kane etc could score well this week.

            Thoughts?

            Adrian
            AWB - Zinchenko - Lundstram
            Sterling - KDB - Ceballos - Martial*
            Rashford - Kane - Pukki

            Ryan - Mina - Cantwell - KWP*

            0.1 ITB

I'm thinking about a -4 to do Kane, Martial, Zinchenko -> Aguero, 5.1 max mid, TAA to give me triple City attack. Thoughts?

Alternative is maybe to give Rashford + Kane another week and just do something like Martial out or KWP -> Lowton and roll the other FT..

Wouldn't really want to play Guendouzi every week, but if happy with that or a rotation with defs (and playing 4-4-2 there) then fine

Sterling owners, me included, are any of you worried that Pep may rest Sterling for Norwich after playing in the IB?

I have a very bad feeling Pep will.

2 points behind leaders without their main defender.

Pep will play his strongest XI

I considered this but think he'll start, unless he picks up a knock with England. With Sane out, the only other option for his spot is Mahrez really, who started on the left vs Brighton last season before switching. Suppose Jesus could do it too, but I don't think Pep's tried him there before.

De Bruyne and Sterling were benched the game before their trip to Ukraine last season, but they were a bit further into the season.

Unbelievably annoying news that Pepe looks to have picked up an injury. Let's hope it's nothing serious and he's fit in time. Otherwise, I pay my first price of the season for moving early (to avoid Perez's next inevitable price drop)

Not sure how reliable this is, from Football London...

Football.london understands that while Pepe has returned to England, he is not nursing an injury of kind.

Having not had a full pre-season - because of his involvement at this summer's Africa Cup of Nations tournament - it was agreed by Ivorian federation and Arsenal that it is best for him to work on his fitness at London Colney.

Furthermore, Pepe joined up the Ivory Coast squad and spent a short period with the team but both parties agreed best for him to sit out games against Benin and Tunisia.

This will be great news for Emery as well as Arsenal fans as Pepe has shown glimpses of real quality in his four appearances thus far and should be raring to go against the Hornets next weekend.

This is from the official Ivory Coast website. It basically says Pepe, injured with his club, reported in on Wednesday afternoon.

But yeah, could still be an 'international injury'. Good news if it is. 2 more weeks of training and conditioning. Perfect for him to bomb Watford. If he's fit I'm anticipating double figures.

Can't see a 5.5 that looks worth it and see that you have Cantwell. Maybe stick with Kane or move to Auba and then you have options like James/Mount/McGinn/Ceballos to replace Perez

Hughes might be decent. But you gotta ask yourself whether Aguero + Hughes outscores Kane/Auba + Mount. I don’t think so.

Much prefer Auba and Mount to Aguero and Hughes. Auba could be your differential and has some great fixtures coming up. Good luck!

I couldn't really live with myself if I said Will Hughes but he has a goal and an assist so far but has some terrible fixtures coming up. If you are set on this plan maybe just get another 4.5 and keep the money for another move down the line.

You could give Traore a run out at Wolves. He looks like he'll get a good few games now and has looked easily their most dangerous player

Given the upcoming fixtures, would you rather bring in Haller or Barnes into your team?

Haller is a better player so him if you can afford it. They both have good fixture runs.

I'm, annoyingly, 0.1m short of Murray + Siggy → Vardy + Cantwell. So with 2FT...

                  A) Murray + Siggy →Abraham + 6.4 (Mount/James/Tielemans/?)
                  B) Jota + Siggy → Vardy + 5.3 (Cantwell)

A looks good but i prefer Haller/Barnes over Abraham

I think Vardy can score against most teams - especially in the form he seems to be hitting, but I get your point.

Barnes is certainly another option instead of Abraham in A.
I like what I've seen of Haller recently (obviously), if I put him in for Jota then that gives me enough money for the midfield options in A (Haller + Siggy → Haller + 6.7)

                      Thanks for your feedback!

in 9407 mins of premier league football kdb has 24g / 52a

on this basis, and if we assume he plays around 2750mins of premier league football this season (this is what sterling managed last year, so perhaps slightly generous to kdb), we’d expect to see around 7 goals and 15 assists...perhaps a total of 170-175pts. at 9.8m thats reasonable value per million, but in the same ballpark (value wise) as what we’d expect from siggy etc, and takes away a city spot. not sure he is as “essential” as is being made out, certainly beyond gw11

I currently have Aguero over KDB and whilst I am looking on enviously at KDB's steady trickle of points, a fully firing KDB usually means points for Aguero and Sterling as he is putting it on a plate for them. As long as you have two of the three I think you are alright. KDB arguably the best value option but would never feel comfortable captaining him. Just my $0.02

Hmmmm... I hear what you’re saying but the logic seems a bit shaky

What if he gets the majority of those 150-175 points before Christmas and has a quiet second half of the season for example? In that scenario he has destroyed non owners by GW19

Or what if he even just smashes it for city’s superb immediate fixture run?

Also what if he outperforms, or significantly outperforms, his historical average? Same results again for non owners

Yet another scenario is he performs to his average of his two relatively uninterrupted seasons (16/17 & 17/18) - 14G 39A or 408 points in 73 appearances which is around 5.6 PPG or 210 points on a season

Or what if he exceeds THAT historical average by virtue of playing in a better team, with better players etc

He is definitely a specialist in assists, rather than goals for sure, and he’ll likely get injured sooner rather than later, but he’s also good on baps and gets 15-20 bonus CS points into the bargain

No guarantees on anything of course , but he looks absolute FPL gold at the minute imo - very tricky to swerve picking him at anything under 10.5 🙂

Yes but man city are performing above their average of last 3 years, when Dilva rotated he is getting more freedom / further forward than previously and the fixtures are as easy as you could want, so proportionally for next period should be notably above that average. Come harder fixtures, or someone else takes off, Pepe or son can slot in but I expect him to exceed 4.6ppg over this next period.

kdb heatmap is basically the same as previous years and his underlying numbers, adjusted for fixture difficulty, are also basically the same

Is that true? interesting. I've only done it in terms man city overall performance vs fixture difficulty anticipated returns (g/xG-shot based/non-shot based) and as a team they are performing at over 100 goals a season territory. That in itself provides a boost. But as I say it's primarily the fixtures for me.

yes city look amazing, but only 3 slots available. players like bilva contributing to their strong underlying numbers without necessarily delivering as of yet. fewest shots conceded at the back with a trio of 5.5 options. im just making the argument that its not straightforward. it might seem like a strawman post taken in isolation (plus i have kdb) but am loosely responding to seeing people on here tear their structure apart/even hitting wc basically to accommodate him because of perception that hes “essential”. i only think 3 city is essential.

I totally agree with this. Bilva, aguero, sterling, otamendi, stones all options. I think if son and pepe had scored last weekend and kdb hadn't we'd be seeing a very different discussion.

I think this discounts that players can improve.

His last two full seasons in the averaged over 200 points, because he averaged 7 goals and 19.5 assists, 15 CS and he's a bonus magnet.

I don't think his bit part number as a teen at Chelsea are particularly relevant to the player he is now.

Thing is I’m going to be happy just holding KdB pretty much all through - the points are likely to keep rolling. I’ll see the value he has

Siggy may - just may - equal value but I’m prepared to bet that value is entirely notional given very few will hold him long enough to benefit from it.

It’s the same argument people ran preseason for the likes of King. You need to hold a poor asset very long term for presumed value.

having patience and faith in historical records/underlying stats is a good thing not a bad thing

In certain scenarios yes, and in certain scenarios no. Over 4-5 game windows, and even 8-10 game windows, underlying stats are subject to huge variance... even at the season level there can be very poor correlation between “good” underlying stats, and “good” FPL performance

Bilva had the third highest shots count in the city team last season, yet is just not an FPL option... McGoldrick was recorded as having both 0.37 XG AND 2 Big Chances in GW1... Tammy got 2 goals from 0.2 XG in GW3 and 2 goals from 1.2 XG in GW3... Man Utd have a better XGc than both Liverpool and city, and have a better XG than Liverpool...

Basically underlying stats have huge limitations & need to be used very carefully (e.g. trying to justify swerving KDB may not be “careful” 🙂 )

Heat maps are similarly limited - a player doesn’t need to live in the box to get attacking FPL points - late runs from deep rarely translate into heat map goodness - but can translate into massive FPL point goodness... most assists come from much deeper than most goals - plus KDB is a gifted long range sharp shooter so will score from range much more regularly than the “average” player

over 4-5 game windows literally everything is subject to huge variance. which is why i suggested having patience and putting faith in underlying stats (when a good sample size is available, which for most players it is) is better than kneejerking to alternatives with a similar expected output who happened to overperform the previous week.

my post about kdb focusses on his historical record not underlying stats. not sure what you are reading tbh

So you could almost say in certain scenarios having faith in backward looking data is a good thing, and in certain scenarios it’s not? 😉

No player is essential, not KDB, not Salah, not Mane, not Sterling

                            How and ever...

Some players are absolutely fantastic FPL players - including KDB, Salah, Mane and Sterling... and using a 9700-minute backward looking sample to forecast a 170 point season for KDB, and then using that 170 point forecasted season score, along with a heat map, to conclude that he is “not essential” is missing the bigger picture
