Captain Poll

Manchester City options expected to battle for Gameweek 5 captaincy

Manchester City options look set to dominate the captaincy once again this week.

The defending champions go up against Norwich City in Gameweek 5, the team that has conceded more goals than any other side so far this season.

In both of their meetings with top-six outfits in 2019/20, the Canaries have conceded at least three times.

Liverpool scored four times at Anfield in Gameweek 1 while Frank Lampard’s Chelsea netted three goals at Carrow Road two weeks later.

With Manchester City visiting East Anglia as the Premier League’s top scorers after the first four matches (14), it looks likely that the goals will continue to flow in Gameweek 5.

Currently top of the Golden Boot race is striker Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) with six goals in his first four appearances of the season.

That should see him feature heavily in the captaincy debate, after massively outscoring Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) in Gameweek 4.

Aguero has averaged 10 points per game this season, and that’s before facing the worst defence in the league.

Sergio Aguero has scored six goals in the first four matches

Fantasy managers might want to consider the fitness of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) this week though as Pep Guardiola predicted he would be fit following a hamstring injury after the international break.

We will have to wait until the next Manchester City press conference to get a proper update but if Jesus is given the all-clear to be involved we could see him compete for minutes with Aguero like we saw in Gameweeks 1 and 2.

Against West Ham, the Brazilian was started ahead of Aguero despite a greater involvement at the Copa America than the Argentinian, and he replaced him after 65 minutes against Spurs in Gameweek 2.

Meanwhile, Sterling, despite his unexpected blank at home to Brighton in Gameweek 4, remains the most nailed-on starter in Guardiola’s attack.

Sterling blanked against Brighton but should still feature in the Gameweek 5 captaincy debate

Before that 4-0 win over Brighton, the England international had scored in every match of the season and was also displaying excellent underlying statistics.

With Norwich’s defence looking so shakey, Gameweek 5 does look like a strong opportunity for Sterling to get back to scoring big points.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m) is also likely to be in the frame for such an appealing fixture.

He has been both an ever-present starter for Manchester City this season but also a reliable source of points.

In the first four matches of the campaign, the Belgian international has five assists and one goal, making for a total of 36 points.

That’s an average of nine per game, a fantastic return on a relatively cheap investment compared to some of the other Manchester City options.

Salah has 27 points at Anfield so far this season

However, there may also be interest in Liverpool’s Saturday lunch-time meeting with Newcastle.

The Magpies may have frustrated Spurs in Gameweek 3 but Jurgen Klopp’s men most recently managed to put three past a stubborn Burnley side.

Scoring six points in that encounter, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) reamins behind only Aguero, Sterling and Teemu Pukki (£7.0m) for total score after the first four Gameweeks.

More importantly, Anfield has been a happy hunting ground for him so far this season, having registered three goals and one assist there in Gameweeks 1 and 3.

In two home matches in 2019/20, Salah has scored a total of 27 points, averaging 13.5 per game.

Interestingly, Sadio Mané (£11.5m) is yet to record an attacking return at Anfield this season, despite proving so prolific there in 2018/19.

From a total of 92 minutes across two matches, he has blanked in both of his home outings so far, although has two goals and an assist on the road.

Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) has had 17 shots in the first four matches of the campaign, more than any other player.

There may actually be some interest in the Liverpool defence again for Gameweek 5 after they kept their first clean sheet of 2019/20 in the 3-0 win over Burnley last time out.

Newcastle come to Anfield as the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League having scored just three goals so far.

Vardy could be considered as a differential captain for Gameweek 5

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) has assists in three matches so far, making him the top-scoring Liverpool defender. Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) have combined for just one attacking return after four matches.

Differential hunters might turn to Leicester this week, given the form of Jamie Vardy (£8.9m).

He has scored three goals and registered one assist in his last two outings and faces a Manchester United defence in Gameweek 5 that remains questionable.

Vardy also tends to do well against the top six and, owned by just 8.7%, he presents a potentially effective nishe option this weekend.

Also among the left-field options for the armband include Arsenal players as they prepare to face a Watford side that has started the campaign poorly.

The Hornets have shipped an average of two goals per game this season, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) is yet to register a blank.

His total of 26 points, made up of three goals and one assist, account for 6.5 points per game.

You can now vote in the latest Fantasy Football Scout captain poll either below or on the side-bar of our website.

Also, Joe and Neale will be discussing the captaincy on our YouTube channel on Monday lunch-time at 12:30pm.

    Dear Sterling and Kun owners,

Which one are you putting the armband on?

    Kind regards

Aguero - no international football, in form, on penalties. Personally feel (hope) Jesus is going to be kept for the run of midweek cup games.

Difficult. If Pep says Jesus is ready then I have my doubts on him. Sterling playing in IB also have my doubts here. Flip a coin.

Sterling for me, he is much younger, faster & always looking to make important runs into the box when the opponent is caught napping from a tactical point of view (Likewise I expect him to stay longer on the pitch & more points for a midfielder). Raz(C) locked in 🙂

Sergio is a legend, a goal scoring machine! But my captain will always be Salah/Sterling/Mane, because they get points for clean sheets and 5 points for goals. I know, Aguero has that potential to score hattricks, but he just won't do it as often as the others will score 1-2 goals per match and over the season, I believe they will come out on top.

So they are a "safer" bet. Pep will need to protect Kun more than he will have to do the same with Sterling, who is still just 24!

I fear not having Aguero in weeks like this, but I think it is much smarter to own 2 of Mane/Salah/Sterling and just distribute funds elsewhere and leave Kun out of my team at this stage...

        OK so current setup:

        Robertson VVD Digne
        Salah Sterling KDB Mount Dendoncker
        Pukki Jota

        Button KWP Montoya Greenwood

        2 FT, 0.3 ITB

        Wildcard Option:

        Pope
        TAA Otamendi Matip Digne
        Salah Sterling KDB Mount
        Pukki Barnes

        Button Ayew Guendouzi Lundstram

220 points/OR 1.71m cant get worse from here surely?

          Pope
          AWB - VVD - Laporte! - Digne
          Mane - Sterling - KDB - Mount
          Pukki - Barnes

          (4.0 - Cantwell - Lundstarm - Wickham)
          1ft & 1.7m

Laporte to TAA seems the sensible transfer for this week.
Or would you change formation to 343 and get Haller for -4?

Both options seem good to me as I have to get TAA asap and need shift from 442 to 343/352 soon too.

Does Kloppies comments regarding rotation around congestion worry you at all. Gomez surely going to be used at some point and he seems to have settled on his centre pairing?

Does Ota not appeal to you?

I think Gomez might be used in the Cup games and will probably be used to rotate Matip. More than that I think TAA is probably the best defender to own in the game and arguably the best player.

Ota does appeal to me but I'm looking to replace AWB for him after a week or two. Want to be sure he's nailed.

Agreed. How (if at all) to get Son in here? It'd have to be a WC and serious downgrades elsewhere - doesn't seem worth it right now.

              Pope | Button
              TAA | Digne | VVD | Montoya | Rico
              Salah | Raz | KDB | McGinn | Cantwell

Maybe a one-GW punt if Barnes outscores him again. With 2FTs next GW, I'll bring the latter if needed.

2FT, 0.0M ITB (WC still intact)

Decided to hold Robbo for one more -- ditching him before NEW at home felt odd. Was considering to burn a FT but Jota was about to fall and ditched him to Wood.

In fairness its not much of a debate as the last 3 seasons of evidence clearly show in the longer run mids just have way too many advantages in the scoring system for equivalent strikers to keep up...

But that being said - with Kane & Kuns fixtures, they really want to be at least keeping pace with Salah & Sterling on points over this next 5 game week stretch

Premium mids should again outscore the premium fwds this season.

I'm more interested in the budget mids vs fwds. The forwards seem to be winning the battle atm but players like Maddison, Tielemans, Mount etc hopefully can provide some options in the coming weeks.

I've always just judged each player on their own merit. A striker can be good value, but it's just a little harder for them. Players like Wilson and Jimenez were fantastic value last season.

However, premium forwards need pretty huge returns to justify that price. They need lots of assists as well as a ton of goals to keep pace with the premium midfielders. I'm not so keen on them. Over a good run of fixtures they might be worth it, but moving your team around to get them costs valuable transfer tempo.

True but likes Aguero in beast form and could see you shooting up the ranks having him against the defences coming up.

I plan to keep Kun for as long as possible. If Jesus does chomp in his minutes too much then I just go Kun to Haller and Vardy.

                        Benefits of having Kun 🙂

Aguero is one of those special premium strikers that can absolutely keep pace if he plays 90 every game. Goals & assists galore.

Salah is a no brainer because he ticks all the boxes of classic FPL comfort-blankets like RvP back in the day. Not only is he the talisman for a title-chasing, free scoring side, but he's on pens and a decent number of set pieces, so his scores are supplemented by the occasional assist from a corner or something, like in GW1.

Aguero & Kane tick these boxes too, and have done for a long time. If I had Aguero right now he would definitely be my captain. Jesus worries in particular are overstated, Aguero is the man. Look up his starting record under Pep when fit.

Kane is slightly more problematic because Spurs just aren't in the same league as City & Liverpool. Blanks like Newcastle at home can be expected more often, explosions can often come in unpredictable games like Everton away where you're unlikely to captain. I also think there are question marks over Spurs being quite as free scoring as in the past couple of years, but that's speculation.

Sterling is a real wildcard. He looks like he could get double figures every game and the stats back this up, he is streets ahead of everyone else for big chances and watching him you can see why. He has a brilliant knack of getting in the right place at the right time. But without the comfort of pens & set pieces, points are shared around more and he can quite easily play a full 90 in a 4-0 and return nothing like the Brighton game.

I'm currently on Salah & Sterling, but if I was wildcarding I would have Aguero over Sterling I think. Just for the dullard predictability of more regular (but less explosive due to forwards getting less points etc) Aguero

Would need to be facilitating a very good rest-of-team. Certainly worth considering but I'm not yet ready to have a Norwich mid in my 11, although he's mostly earned a spot so far.

Very true. The main thing that’s giving me pause is that I also own Pukki. A little bit reluctant to have a double up in my starting 11. But am seriously considering switching Pukki to Abraham so maybe it will be doable.

Cantwell should increase in value as he is the only one to have other than Pukki from Norwich. I do not mind the double up for now.

-4 for Otamendi means he has to keep a CS against one of the league’s most dynamic attacks. I don’t expect him to keep a CS personally so that puts him on 2 points. Assuming you have a bench player who can also get 2 points then you’re at a minus 4

Don't wait. If you end up wanting to make another move next week, which often happens, you'll be taking a -4 anyway. Do it now, ignore the hitphobes 😛

Do we know this for sure? Seems an assumption that's not necessarily correct. Mane and Salah after all play similar positions (wide forwards) and they aren't lacking for goals.

I see where you're coming from re KDB, he's a class option, I just think if I was on a wildcard I'd roll the dice with Pepe for wat, AVL, then reassess after those two.

                        A) KDB has been incredible so far this season, and there is no suggestion that it will stop. Pepe looks like a good punt, but not more than that. Easily KDB for me there.

                        B) Very tough - for the moment, Aguero is on incredible form, so would have to say him. That said, I think Sterling will probably end the season with more points, so depends how long term you're looking.

                        C) Haller for me. Underlying stats look better.

No double risers throughout the entire International Break - Has FPL altered the price change mechanism even more?

Not particularly surprising. Not really any performances that warranted a double rise last gameweek.

Or are we talking about the myth that there's way more price changes during an IB...?

Gone are the days when double rise during international break was a thinggy
