Scoutcast Episode 300 – Spartans

After around a decade of shows the Scoutcast has reached the momentous 300 episode mark.

From its origins, when Mark and Granville used to find time to podcast during their lunch break at work, to the live stream video version of today, the Scoutcast has long been a staple part of Fantasy manager’s lives.

But while the cast and technology has changed the issues remain the same.

One of these recurring themes has been the arguments that greet any cast member’s decision to Wildcard. This week’s show, ahead of Gameweek 5, is no different.

Knowing full well what may happen Joe tentatively presents his team overhaul to co-hosts Az and Neale. In Scoutcast tradition he then has defend his decisions, like one of the 300 Spartans who famously took on an army more than 2,000 years ago.

Elsewhere, the crew take a look back at some of the many mistakes and small successes of Gameweek 4 and how they plan to turn their fortunes around this coming weekend.

Kevin De Bruyne’s captaincy credentials, the best clean sheet prospects and Arsenal’s fixtures are among issues on the bill.

The crew also reveal what factors they use when making decisions, which covers everything from the growth of expected stats to the eye and even ‘ear test’.

Meanwhile, Neale’s differential shout for September and October ensures the arguments continue.

This episode wraps up with a tribute to an unlikely Scoutcast star over the years and details of how to help the charity that originally looked after him.

This Scoutcast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel. Be sure to subscribe to get notified of future live episodes.

I have been doing some research on expected goals and expected goals against for different teams. Very interesting viewing and I would love to hear some of your thoughts.

Pretty standard for expected goals, Man City are by far top and West Ham, Liverpool and Chelsea fill the top 4.

However, more interesting is the expected goals against, with top meaning they have the least expected goals against:
    1) Man U (by a long way, actually, were expected only 2.85 GA, but have conceded 4 and been unlucky to not get more clean sheets)
    2) Leicester
    3) Wolves
    4) Burnley
and then it is City and Liverpool.

What are people's thoughts on this? Any of those top 4 GA looking a good choice now in defence? Everybody had ruled united defenders out...

Thanks for this, I think it's an eye test thing. I don't like the look of Utd at the minute but good to know that there's reason to hold onto AWB

Depends where you want to spend the money - united defenders are 5.5+ with little attacking return potential. AWB is the only viable one really as he should get a lot of baps if they keep a clean sheet.

Very good point. People like Pope, Pieters, Chilwell, Soyuncu etc. look nice now, though!

at this point in the season its better looking at shots conceded (+ from where?) and chances created. one tap in either way can skew xg massively with only a few weeks worth of data.

there is some correlation though anyway and its one reason ive been advising keeping mufc def (even though i have none) and monitoring emerson

The United Palace game has skewed things a bit imo. Palace specialise in against the odds wins away from home with consistently bizarre XG and XGC. That said it’s still a really small sample size.

How bad is my team looking?

1 FT & Wildcard available but thinking of rolling FT provided AWB, Martial & Robinson are fit.

    Ryan (Button)
    Digne, AWB, VVD Lundstram (Söyüncü)
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Martial, Robinson
    Jota (Pukki, Greenwood)

Pretty bad given Martial is not a definite starter. Don't like Jota atm either.

I’m too committed to Jota now - surely he has to come good.

If just martial is out he is an easy 1 FT to Mount

The way my season has started I fully expect them to both score 10+ points each on my bench.

I benched Robinson last week 🙁

      Not bad imo

Jota could (finally) prove his worth this week - really like he look of that fixture.

Think I’d play Pukki over AWB.

    1FT and 1ITB
My concern is Cantwell / Donker
    Pukki / Rash / Greenwood.

    Rash to who?
    1. Abraham
    2. Haller

Early game for Pool and lots of defensive problems for Norwich makes me wanna captain Sterling or KDB over Salah.

    Opinions?

      Safe solid choice = Salah

I've activated my wildcard. Can you help if this team needs something different?

    Pope
    TAA-Digne-Pieters
    Salah-Sterling-KDB-Iwobi
    Abraham-Haller-Barnes

    SUB:Button,Lundstram,Cantwell

Basically thinking if Iwobi is suited for 4th spot at midfield. Alternatives would be Mcginn,Ceballos, Robinson. James is 6.1 , so would need 0.2 from somewhere. I could downgrade Pieters 4.6 to Guilbert 4.4...

Forwards are pretty much locked in. Don't want Pukki against ManC (H) or Burnely (A).

    Anything come to mind?

Dan James would certainly be a good alternative I would say. He looked by far the most attacking, and effective player in their last televised match. I'd love to have Ceballos, but I think he's still susceptible to rotation at the moment.

I think not having Pukki is a bit of a risk in view of high his ownership is, and how high in the stats charts he is. He's going to carry on shooting, and while he may not do much against Man City this weekend, against most other teams he's a good threat. If you were thinking of bringing him in, he might fall foul of the casual players dropping him after the City game, should be draw a blank, which could then provoke a price fall.

Is Greenwood your third outfield sub?

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

        Rico is my third sub...

I May sell barnes/Abraham and go back to pukki. Ideal scenario would be, that pukki blanks against ManC and drops in price for 0.1. Then after burnley away, I could get him in

There's a decent chance of Abraham going up in value again in the next 24 hours or so, which could be very useful to your strategy.

How nailed is Daniel James when united start to play twice a week? I also saw him play against southampton and he really was a handful.. But where can I get those 0.2 to upgrade iwobi - > james

I wonder if United might prioritise the league which I feel would benefit James in fpl terms were that to happen. As their current main attacking threat, I'm hoping that makes him harder to drop.

Iwobi is an interesting call - pretty medium on him but don’t really know a lot about him.

I’d be tempted to get funds from a 5.5 type at the back from Digne - City probs - to get a Mount type as 4th mid. I’m eyeing Mount CHO Trossard James as the area I’d want there. Think that extra 0.5 or so buys quite a lot.

(Have McGinn but really as holding measure unless he does something special)

    which combo would you select?

    A) Sterling,Salah, Haller, Abraham
    B) James, Mane, Aguero, Firmino

I am on a wildcard and starting to prefer option B)

Lanzini is also a great option! under 6.4 you could argue for Ceballos also...

Trossard? I know he’s out but he’s still on my radar.

Trossard for sure imo, if he played for better team everyone would own him! (Maybe they will by end of season)
Also ppl forgetting James will be on the right wing soon again where his output diminishes

It feels more exciting somehow. Digne is really popular and I can see why, I'm just a bit wary of clean sheets for everton which is the staple of any defender. An option is the first for the next two and then reassess after then by which time soyuncu/mount fixtures better or other options may have emerged

this is why i am thinking of switching salah and sterling to Aguero and Mane... could also upgrade 7+ forward/midfielder to 9.5 Pepe/Son/Firmino

as so much people have Sterling and Salah, it's hard to climb trough overall rankings.... feels a bit dull to go with Sterling and Salah.

Firmino and Aguero are in a great form and there is lot of potential to get massive point hauls from pepe/son.

As with most situations, there are a few players that everyone will have soon. What will define whether you go up or down are the remaining players/differentials.

I'm expecting everyone soon to have:
Pope, TAA, Digne, Salah, Sterling, KdB, Pukki. So that leaves 4 slots for the rest of your team to change it up and get ahead.

The FFS template takes you up the ranks, not down

Except if you're expecting to be in top 100

The template here over time tends to be the top 10k or 50k template (NOT the general FPL 6M+ template), and that should win my minileagues

I lurk in the comments here to learn from the template "owned" players and also template "considered" players, then combine this with my personal research to choose who I get or sell. An important skill is knowing what biases are usually at play in the comments and avoiding those biases in my own team though

Surely the best way to go about it is simply to pick the players you think will do well and then learn from your successes and failures?

Looking at other people's teams and trying to learn from their mistakes doesn't seem nearly as productive or as fun to me.

Don't understand people picking wood in their WC teams presumably since they can't afford Barnes...his underlying stats have been bad, and the logic that they always end up with similar goals is flawed as well..I'd rather have Wesley over him or an additional midfielder in the same price bracket

We always thought that Pukki would have a hard time in the beginning of the season because of hard fixtures. But now the fixtures soften and the only tough fixture in the next 7 is Everton away. I would keep him or get him if I was on my WC.

So...I have this WC team with 0.7 ITB. Should I go...

    A) Abraham -> Haller + 0.4 ITB
    B) Dunk -> Maitland-Niles + 0.1 ITB
    C) Keep 0.7 ITB

    Pope // Skeletenburg
Dunk Otamendi TAA Digne // Lunds
Sterling Salah KDB Mount // Cantwell
    Abraham Pukki // Greenwood
