Maddison owners wait on injury as Son delivers again

Leicester City 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Goals: Harry Kane (£11.0m) | Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m), James Maddison (£7.1m)

Assists: Son Heung-min (£9.6m) | Hamza Choudhury (£4.5m)

Bonus Points: Maddison x3, Kane x2, Pereira x1

Leicester City emerged victorious over Tottenham Hotspur in a 2-1 win as Mauricio Pochettino’s side let yet another lead slip in the 2019/20 campaign.

After a disappointing result mid-week against Olympiacos, the lunch-time kick-off at the King Power Stadium presented the perfect opportunity for Spurs to banish their demons and return to winning ways in domestic competition.

Yet Brendan Rodgers galvanised the Foxes to come back from 1-0 down and secure an important victory in front of their home fans in the East Midlands.

Maddison scored Leicester’s winning goal on Saturday afternoon

Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) got the first of the Foxes’ fightback, drilling a shot past Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.4m).

But it was James Maddison (£7.1m) who stole the headlines with a fine strike from distance to secure all three points for Leicester as they rise to third in the table.

Maddison’s credentials as a mid-priced midfielder with goalscoring threat are well documented after his exceptional debut Premier League season in which he scored seven goals and registered seven assists to record a total of 137 points.

He has shown promise in recent weeks and finally delivered with his excellent Gameweek 6 goal combined with maximum bonus points.

Maddison was certainly due a goal, having already gone close twice against Spurs. He tested Gazzaniga with a curled effort from the edge of the box in the first-half, followed by a dazzling run, beating two defenders to then have his shot pushed wide of the near post shortly after.

His performance in the victory over Spurs once again underlined his potential value to managers looking for a differential midfielder (11.3% ownership), although they should tread easy for now.

Maddison owners will have to wait on his ankle injury over the next few days

Maddison picked up a potentially worrying ankle injury late in the game, triggering some concern after the full-time whistle. Leicester had used all their substitutes by this point so nobody was able to replace him. However, rather than come off and leave the Foxes with 10 men, Maddison elected to spend the final five minutes of the match standing virtually still inside the centre-circle. We will certainly need to pay close attention to Rodgers’ next press conference.

“I’ll go and see it now, there’s a little bit of worry but we’ll see.” – James Maddison

“He took a heavy knock on his ankle, so we will see how he is tomorrow.” – Brendan Rodgers

Both Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) and Maddison looked sharp throughout the lunch-time kick-off. The centre-forward was unable to build on his goal-tally of three so far this season, but the 31-year-old’s incisive, troubling runs into the final-third suggest this is still a player with the ability to excel under Brendan Rodgers in 2019/20.

The likes of Youri Tielemans (£6.4m) and Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) were also lively in the final third, with the Foxes continuing to apply pressure and test the Spurs’ backline in the second half.

This victory means Leicester have now lost just once in six Premier League games this season, and the plethora of exciting, attacking options provides managers with mid-price options moving forward.

Yet while this was a victory that underlined Leicester’s attacking credentials, it was an afternoon that served as a timely reminder as to just how fragile Spurs’ defence can be in the face of considerable pressure.

Spurs capitulated for the second time this week as they lost at Leicester

The mid-week capitulation against Olympiakos combined with letting a two-goal lead slip against rivals Arsenal serve as a concerning back-drop to this latest poor result.

Serge Aurier (£4.9m) did display his attacking prowess with a fine strike that was ruled out by VAR but Spurs simply do not look sturdy enough to justify investment in defence, although they were short Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) whose wife had just given birth.

Furthermore, there will be many that argue they were unfortunate to see their second goal ruled out given how marginal the offside call was, and the impact on the two sets of players was stark. While Spurs were dealt a blow of losing out on a goal, Leicester were spurred on as if they had found the net themselves.

“We need to say that when you get the benefit, it’s not getting the benefit, it’s fair or not fair, offside or not offside. I’m not going to talk. I’m only going to say that we all accept that system in the game and now I am not going to complain. I am going to accept that maybe if you are going to say it’s offside or wasn’t if it wasn’t clear, but I trust in the referees and if the referees say it was or wasn’t I’m not going to complain.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Kane’s finish against Leicester was a hugely impressive effort

Harry Kane (£11.0m) did open the scoring for Spurs with an exquisite improvised finish, after Son Heung-min (£9.6m) delicately laid off the ball for the striker.

It was a truly impressive finish as he was fouled by the defender but still kept enough composure as he fell to the ground to control the ball and crash it into Kasper Schmeichel‘s (£5.0m) net from the ground.

Whilst premium strikers such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) have stolen the headlines with their rampant goalscoring streaks in recent weeks, Kane’s performance in the defeat to Leicester was a reminder to managers that the England captain is still able to provide goalscoring returns.

It must be said that Kane was unfortunate not to come away with an assist on top of his goal. It was his pass that set up Aurier’s goal, ruled out for an offside against Son in the build-up.

But given the explosive performances that the likes of Aubameyang and Aguero have been consistently delivering, it is difficult for managers to select a forward such as Kane when he is not matching their goalscoring consistency.

Son has delivered in both of his last two matches ahead of an appealing run of games

For Son, who built on his brace against Palace with an assist, this was a game that highlighted the South-Korean’s attacking abilities and a performance that rewarded those managers who brought in the forward for Gameweek 6.

With games against Southampton, Brighton and Watford to come in their next three, Son is starting to display form that would warrant inclusion for managers, having recorded attacking returns in his last three Premier League appearances – the most of any Spurs player.

This was a heavily disappointing defeat for Spurs, but the growing viability of Leicester’s attacking assets simply cannot go un-noticed for managers given their exceptional form under Rodgers in 2019/20.

Aurier comfortably the best if nailed, but he didn't play well against Leicester in the 2nd half. Though it would be harsh if he is dropped for that, but if definitely makes him less nailed so I would wait at least another GW before getting him

It was a shot with serious power and was probably headed to the top right side corner for all we know. The speed at which it bulged into the net shows how clean the strike was

I might even hold Barnes now. Don't especially rate him but getting Callum in for 2 weeks for an effective minus 4 doesn't float my boat. His luck will run out soon

Dunk is the one I keep on not buying. He's not 4.5 anymore but Brighton look ok at the back and he gives the chance of attack too.

I find it hard when the cs is gone knowing that that's it - I want to have the chance of returns to the end - it's more fun that way.

Barnes isn’t a problem with those fixtures. Digne is a hold for me, since you’ve got to take the rough with the smooth. James is a nice little differential. Think you’re good tbh

The problem is that all the value is in mid price forwards and you are on Barnes who is the least of them. 4-4-2 isn't looking optimal.

I'd be looking to switch to 3 at the front pdq

      1. Pranav Santhosh
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 6 months ago

Yeah I’d say Barnes is the worst of the mid priced forwards. I can jump up to haller/Tammy in one move but I’d still be playing 442. My rationale for saving the FT is to have 2FT so I have the option to move greenwood up to haller/Tammy funded by sterling/Salah to son so I can go 3 up front or to just move Barnes in week 8.

How would you try and move this team to 3 up front?

I see a fair bit of people clamouring to get in Chilwell over Soyuncu for perceived attacking threat. Guys, as someone who sees him play every week, don't do that.

He's a great player, when he's on form he's a very solid defender and very good at progressing the ball forward, but he's so weak in the final third. He is so unsure of his crosses that often in a game he'll burst forward pretty much all the way to the last line of a teams defence, and then pass backward instead of go for a cross. And even when he does put a cross in, it's usually too early for anyone to get onto the end of.

That isn't to say that he won't get assists this year, he's involved enough in all the stages of our attack that he'll grab some here and there, but don't rely on him for attacking returns. If you want a Leicester defender who can give you that, look no further than Ricardo, who is a massive boon to our attack and defence as well, he's good with bonus points, everything. If you're willing to pay 0.8 extra for the faint hope of an assist, you should be willing to pay 0.6 over that for a genuinely attacking fullback.

As an FPL asset, he's fairly average. If there was a nailed Burnley asset for 4.5 I would get them before him. He does, however, benefit from being in a very stable defence (of which he is a big contributing factor), and having minor bonus potential and attacking threat, which is potentially the least out of all the defenders bar potentially Evans in fairness.

IRL, he's so good. His partnership with Evans is much more fearsome than Maguire's ever was, and his pace means we can finally play a high line without chuckling nervously to ourselves. He makes a couple of mistakes but nothing to write home about.

I own him and am happy. Very good bench defender

I think he is very good value at 4.6m in fpl but personally haven't been overly impressed with his defensive performances. Physically, is a beast in the air and has pace but find that he gets dragged out of position too easily. Seems too aggressive in stepping out. Evans does have a good sense of positioning though so it kind of works as a partnership.

          1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
            • 7 Years
            4 years, 6 months ago

Oh I agree he steps out too much, and potentially that was one of the reasons we conceded yesterday, but the other things he offers more than make up for it - plus Evans usually can make up for it, as you said. He is very difficult to disposess which means the opposition's press is limited, and his pace finally means that the likes of Son or Jota don't have happy hour against us anymore. His tackling is also top notch.

            1. Nabs Kebabs
              • 12 Years

Fair points, Son and Jota are assassins of the high line! Having a pacey defender definitely helps to deal with their threat in behind.

I think you guys are a dark horse to finish 4th season. Been saying it for a couple weeks now.

I think it would take something extra for Arsenal to finish below Leicester to be honest, they still have the quality. If Bellerin and Tierney can make the intended impact you will be fine for 4th

                    1. Nabs Kebabs

                      4 years, 6 months ago

I think we have very little chance of finishing 4th. Emery's insistence on playing Xhaka is costing us. He is useless. Too slow and rash to be a reliable midfielder. Luiz is Mustafi 2.0. The main problem is the midfield though, the defence always seems to have a huge amount of space in front of it as we play 4231 with no solid holding midfielder so no matter how good the back 4 is they are always going to look vulnerable. Especially when all your fullbacks like to bomb up the pitch and the manager encourages it. Even in attack, we have looked average with only Auba looking sharp.

More tempted by Auba than Kun if I were to shift some funds into front line.

But to be fair, I don't deserve the Lundy points, I actually had him 3rd on my bench till someone here told me to out him ahead of Greenwood

I have no idea why I have Kelly first on my bench. Didn't put much thought in it tbh.

Just woken up to find that my vice captain was Barnes. Not the best start to the day.

Nice midfield but forwards are risky.

I'd prefer Pope in goals and a 343 formation. That midfield looks devastating though!

Also I think value in 3 forwards rather than 4 premium mids

Yesterday will go down in FPL folklore. I wonder if Otamendi is the first defender in FPL history to get a goal, assist, clean sheet and no bonus points. Even B Silva scoring a hat trick and not receiving top bonus must be pretty rare. There are so many vice captain and bench points still to be added. If Sterling had made a five minute cameo yesterday it would have cost me 27 points plus whatever Wan B scores today. Total madness.

Well written - yesterday was surreal for sure. Aguero missing 5 golden chances too.

No one knows yet. I'm hoping Andy and Neale can get their teams back, surely they will be able to. Should imagine this will be getting mentioned later on about security etc.
