De Bruyne outshines Aguero as Sterling suffers first benching

Manchester City 8-0 Watford

Goals: Bernardo Silva (£7.8m) x 3, Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m), Sergio Aguero (£12.2m), Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), David Silva (£7.5m)

Assists: De Bruyne x 2, Mahrez x 2, Otamendi, Aguero, D Silva

Bonus Points: De Bruyne x 3, B.Silva x 2, Mahrez x 2

Manchester City demolished Watford 8-0 at the Etihad to bounce back in emphatic fashion from their shock defeat to Norwich City last weekend.

Amid all the discussion about Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) and Raheem Sterling (£12.2m) pre-match, it was Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m) who cleaned up and proved to be the key FPL star.

That was set against a backdrop of Sterling’s first benching of the season, as Pep Guardiola opted to rest the most captained player of Gameweek 6 and broadcast to the world that the Roulette wheel is now in full spin.

Sterling spent the whole game on the bench, opening up the door to some fortuitous vice-captaincy scores

While last week it was de Bruyne who was dropped for the trip to Norwich, this time the Belgian put on an attacking masterclass in scoring one goal and registering two assists to collect three bonus points against Watford.

It was a timely reminder to those in possession of the absent Sterling, who did not come off the bench at all, that once Guardiola has rested his key personnel, they are always likely to do well the next time and should probably be retained.

The 36% owned de Bruyne put on an exquisite performance, yet the player who excelled for the Citizens was Bernardo Silva (£7.8m). The Portuguese midfielder scored a hat-trick to reward the near 12% of managers who had kept their faith in the attacking asset. Not a key asset in terms of captaincy for Gameweek 6, but certainly a powerful differential.

De Bruyne was in excellent form for Manchester City on Saturday

Bernardo had registered just two attacking returns this season prior to the fixture against Watford, but an explosive and clinical attacking display saw him take home the match ball despite a number glorious chances for his team-mate Aguero, who arguably should have had his hands on it too.

The Argentinian’s performance was certainly bittersweet for his owners as, despite scoring and assisting for a nine-point score, the Argentine could have matched his counterpart Silva’s hat-trick at the very least.

A number of golden opportunities fell at the feet of Aguero, but the striker was unable to add to his initial strike, despite the exceptional team performance that he unquestionably contributed to throughout the 8-0 demolition.

Aguero arguably should have scored more than nine points but continued to deliver reliable returns

Either way, Aguero retained his record of scoring in every Premier League game so far this season, and despite a number of his team-mates putting in exceptional attacking displays, it is difficult to look past Aguero as being City’s primary source of goals in 2019/20.

Whilst previous seasons have seen City’s starting striker berth be alternated between Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) and Aguero, Guardiola has seemingly put his faith in the Argentine as being the club’s first-choice striker. A midweek match against Preston should allow him to be rested ahead of a Gameweek 7 trip to Everton too, which is encouraging.

There can be no doubting that Aguero is not immune to potentially being rotated by Guardiola, yet for now, those managers without the striker may be asking themself if they should move for him.

Both Silvas racked up the points against a dreadful Watford side

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) also sent a timely reminder of his explosive potential with a goal and two assists to record a 14-point score at the Etihad. Starting the game in place of Sterling, Mahrez tore through the Watford defence in an impressive attacking display, with a number of deft touches and mazy runs troubling the Hornet’s backline throughout the fixture.

David Silva (£7.5m) also delivered a typically reliable attacking performance with a goal and an assist in the rout, but whilst City’s attacking assets were mesmeric at the Etihad, there are some real questions emerging for managers in the Champions back-line.

Mendy’s return to the starting line-up, while short-lived hints at left-back rotation moving forward

Given the long-term injury that defender Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) suffered in the game against Brighton, managers in ownership of the French centre-back were faced with a dilemma was to who could replace the defender in their squads. Those managers who opted for Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m) were handsomely rewarded by the Argentinian centre-back with a mammoth 15-point haul, including a goal, an assist and a clean-sheet.

Yet Otamendi’s eye-catching performance was not the only point of note from City’s defence, with Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) starting in place of Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.6m). Despite starting the first-half in impressive fashion, regularly bombing forwards on the left-flank, Mendy was taken off measure by Guardiola at half-time.

Despite initial concern that Mendy’s substitution was injury-based, Guardiola allayed any concern that the Frenchman could be back on the treatment table, whilst also praising his replacement, Angeliño.

“He [Benjamin Mendy] is well but after two years playing only a few minutes, it [45 minutes] was enough. Angelino is an incredible nice guy, and is training well – he deserved to play. I saw many good things in him.” – Pep Guardiola

Otamendi now looks the ideal candidate to invest in the Manchester City defence

With the ongoing absence of Laporte, Fantasy managers will be looking to retain a form of defensive coverage from City, and whilst the scoreline of Saturday’s victory will naturally mean interest gravitates towards the Citizens’ attacking assets, there is an interesting narrative developing at the heart of City’s defence.

Zinchenko appears to have lost his security of starts with Mendy’s return and whilst the enigmatic Frenchman has often rewarded managers with attacking returns in the past, it seems unlikely that he will start every week either. Instead, we might see Guardiola picking and choosing between his three left-backs

Therefore, a serious case presents itself for the reliable starter at centre-back Otamendi, who can similarly offer attacking output, but without the consistent concerns with regards to his fitness.

For Watford, this was an unfortunate result but Quique Sanches Flores’ side came out of the traps exceptionally poorly and were unable to come back from their dismal start.

Early-season interest in the likes of Gerard Deulofeu (£6.2m) has understandably simmered, whilst Saturday’s showing was also reliable advert as to just how unreliable Watford’s defence are from the perspective of solidity and clean-sheets.

Given the Hornets’ poor start to the Premier League season that saw Javi Gracia lose his job after four games, it is difficult to even consider any Watford players as viable assets at such a volatile time for the club, and after today’s performance it is unlikely that managers are likely to be considering investing in their assets anytime soon.

    Fantasy Football Scout need to use their links to Official FPL to push to get this sorted.

    If someone has access to an FPL accounts password they can login, change email address and then delete account leaving the person with no method of recovering the account. The original email address doesn’t need to be confirmed when it’s changed and you don’t even get an email notification to say your email address on your FPL account has been changed.

    This is not good enough! Two factor authentication is needed but this is about ten steps worse than that! This wouldn’t be good enough security in the 1990s let alone 2019!!

      This

      I have said it before that fpl should use something like send code to phone vitrifaction which would beef up security and help to curb multiteam merchants.

      The problem is that fpl is a free to play game and these kind of things cost money unfortunately so the guys running the game are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

        Don’t really think it matters that it’s a free game. They collect all of our personal details so owe us all the right that they’re considering security on their site.

      Fantasy football scout should keep out of influencing any FPL decision unless the people who have links drop their team. Unfair advantage.

      The user in question was probably hacked because he has a poorly secured password into his email account. The person who hacked him will not even know him and he won't know them . They will have run a dictionary attack or got his details through a key logger on his phone or pc . Once they had access to his account they will have been able to access any of his related sites ( FPL and Twitter) . If it is somone he knows then he's been socially engineered and been tricked into giving his details away. Its harsh but why should FPL change their own security policy for one man's mess up

        • 12 Years

        Like I said above, you don’t need access to the original email account to do any of the steps above. Only need FPL password to completely change email address and delete account.

          FPL can't go changing people's details like that. What if Chef was a malicious user spoofing his identify to access somone else's account..How can FPL be sure.

          I know it's harsh and although he can upset folk but no-one deserves that but I don't see what they can do. What they do need is a account lockout policy that locks you out for a certain number of failed attempts which would stop brute force attacks but comes with its own problems .

            Security costs money to implement too. It is a free competition.. If we paid them to use it you would have more of a case I agree.

        And let's face it, if it was some random guy and not one of these Twitter folk no one would even care. He's not a special case. The morale is you are responsible for your own password. If you can't secure a password that no-one will be able to crack easy ( 12 characters, uppercase, lowercase, number and symbol ) you really shouldn't be on the internet in this day and age

        1. GoonerByron

          The problem is a password on it’s own isn’t suitable security for anything in this day and age.

            I think it’s likely a breach from a site like fix that holds your fpl login rather than the main site itself.

      So you are saying there's not even an e-mail confirmation when someone tries to delete an account? That is indeed terrible security routines from FPL if true.

      If there is an e-mail confirmation and the hackers are people who have gained access to e-mail accounts then 2FA on email account would fix the issue and people who havent activated that are just lazy.

    Need some advice on what should be the next move with this squad:

    Heaton - Woodman
    TAA - Dijk - Digne - Zinchenko - Rico
    Salah - Sterling - KdB - Cantwell - James
    Wesley - Pukki - Wickham

    1FT and 0.0M ITB. WC still intact and an option..

    Would like some Chelsea-assets here, as well has having a lot of unsure players I feel in the squad. However, lots of them have decent fixtures next GW, so feel like a WC where I re-structure would come back to bite me..

    Any advice?

      The same is being said of the Kun sellers...bottom line is we all seem to need KdB now.

    “It was a timely reminder to those in possession of the absent Sterling, who did not come off the bench at all, that once Guardiola has rested his key personnel, they are always likely to do well the next time and should probably be retained.”

    How do people feel about this and still going with Sterling over Aguero?

        Its just BS.. Article writer is a coping Sterling owner. theres no guarantee Sterling will do well in the next game. KDB was in blistering form before his rest and continued that form.

        Sterling has been in poor form.

          Now this is the kind of comment I was looking for, not gonna lie! Haha. (Probably because of my schoolboy wildcard mistake where I got Aguero in Friday night for price rise but accidentally made all the other transfers as well, losing the price rise I’d gained on Sterling so hoping the right decision is to have Aguero)

        It happens twice a season and the cash for the first 11 can deliver 36 times instead.

        No brainer imo. No more than 0.5m on the bench is needed

      Hey everyone.

      For those that haven’t seen, Andy (Let’s Talk FPL) and our writer Neale (Skonto Rigga) have had their FPL accounts accessed and deleted.

      Obviously I don’t want to speculate too much, and certainly don’t want to encourage speculation, but it does seem like a worryingly targeted attack. Sadly, they aren’t the first and may not be that last.

      First and foremost let me say that I’m sure it will be investigated and we desperately hope the accounts can be reinstated, however it definitely isn’t guaranteed. I will emphasise that I wouldn’t worry too much about your accounts right now – I don’t believe there’s any reason for your account to be at any more risk than it has been so far this season. High profile accounts seem the most at risk, so for those of you that aren’t in leagues such as #Elite64 should be far harder to target / more unlikely to be targeted.

      It is, however, a good reminder to keep your security updated – it’s on us to do whatever we can to keep our accounts secure.

      For now, I’d recommend:

      - Changing your password to something you don’t use for anything else. Make sure it’s not a common password or easy to guess.
      - Log out of all / disable all FPL extensions
      - Not logging in to any FPL websites that require your FPL password, even if they are genuine FPL help / advice sites.

      I'd also advise securing your email accounts with 2 step verification if possible, but that doesn't seem to be the cause here. Good security advise in general though.

      Nobody, least of all Andy and Neale, should have to deal with this. It’s sickening, it’s horrible but now it’s time to make sure others aren’t affected as well.

      Hope everyone enjoys the remainder of this weekend’s football.

        Whilst it’s based on rumour, I will also add this for your consideration:

        It may be worth unlinking any social media accounts to your FPL accounts if you have done that, in particular Twitter. Not something I’ll say is essential at all, but if you want to be as safe as possible for a little while longer it is an option.

            I would never go with three 11.0+ players in the first place, adding de Bruyne to that totally ruins any semblance of balance in your team. It's personally something I would just not do, especially for a -8. If you sell, say, Sterling for de Bruyne, you can soon buy a decent mid instead of McGinn, maybe even Bernardo Silva for example.

        Unless you want to take hits (downgrade VVD, Digne, Salah -> Mane), Sterling -> KDB is the obvious move (then later upgrade Dendo to Mount or even Dilva if funds allow)

      Long/annoying advice post alert!

      Pope
      TAA, Soyuncu, Zinchenko*
      Mane, Cantwell, KDB, Mount*, Sterling*
      Aubameyang, Pukki

      (Woodman, Lundstram, Montoya, Wickham)

      Keen to get Abraham and/or Son/Dilva in. Sterling little too expensive now I think. Sorry for the eyesore but what's looking good? Happy to take a hit and make early transfers, will be losing value on Sterling/Mount/Zinchenko this week for sure...

      A) Wickham, Mount & Zinchenko -> Abraham (c), Hayden & Mings (-8)
      B) Wickham, Sterling & Zinchenko -> Abraham, Son & Aurier (-8)
      C) Wickham, Sterling & TAA -> Abraham, Son & Otamendi (-8) (Mount & Zinchenko -> Dilva & Aurier week after)
      D) Mount & Zinchenko -> Dilva & Lowton/Diop (-4)
      E) Sterling & Mount -> Son & Dilva (-4)
      F) Zinchenko -> Otamendi
      G) Sterling -> Son

      Cheers

      So many options right now, there's really no right choice. There's a decent argument for owning any of;

      Aubameyang, Aguero, Salah, Sterling, de Bruyne, either Silva, Son, Mané, Vardy, and that's just premium attacking players.

      This is fun 🙂

        I WC this GW and I knew I would want as many as possible
        I have 4 premium attackers, but feels like KDB is the most important one I don't own
