Pukki and Norwich blank on the road again as Wood finally scores

Burnley 2-0 Norwich

Goals: Chris Wood x2 (£6.2m)

Assists: Ashley Westwood (£5.4m), Dwight McNeil (£6.0m)

Bonus Points: Wood x3, Westwood x2, Pieters x1

Norwich City’s attacking assets registered a second consecutive blank away from home as they were defeated 2-0 at Burnley on Saturday.

Despite Teemu Pukki (£7.1m) and Todd Cantwell (£5.0m) both delivering offensive returns in the Gameweek 5 win over Manchester City, neither one has scored more than two points on the road since the opening night of the campaign.

Now that we are six matches into the season, we have slightly more data to play with which, at this stage, suggests that Norwich could be a side only worth relying on for home matches.

At Carrow Road in 2019/20, Pukki has scored five goals and registered two assists for an average of 13.3 points per game.

Pukki is yet to score away from home since Gameweek 1

However, on his travels, the Finland international has scored just once and averaged 3.7 points per game.

Cantwell has suffered the same disparity depending on the venue. All four of the midfielder’s attacking returns (two goals, two assists) have come at home.

Furthermore, Cantwell’s points per game at Carrow Road so far this season is 7.7, but just 2.0 away from it.

The form of both of those players will likely be a concern given that Saturday’s trip to Burnley was the first of three away matches between Gameweeks 6 and 9. In the next three matches, the Canaries have to go to Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

However, we must say that Norwich have been rather unfortunate on their travels so far this season, so maybe it’s not the time to panic about them just yet.

Farke has been an unlucky manager for injuries in recent weeks, especially away from home

In both of their last two away matches they have been forced into substitutions due to injury in the early stages of matches.

As a team whose attacking threat stems from the ability to play the ball out of the back with composure, even injuries to defensive players can have a knock-on effect on the rest of the team.

Against West Ham in Gameweek 4, Norwich lost first-choice centre-back Christoph Zimmermann (£4.5m) after 35 minutes and, due to other injuries in the same position, Daniel Farke was forced to introduce holding midfielder Ibrahim Amadou (£4.5m) next to Ben Godfrey (£4.5m).

After struggling on the ball in his EFL Cup debut a few days previously, Amadou was a little exposed at the London Stadium.

Despite enjoying an impressive outing against Manchester City in Gameweek 5, Amadou was poor again at Turf Moor, giving the ball away too often and failing to cut out the supply lines to Burnley’s centre-forwards.

Amadou had a tough game at centre-back against Burnley

However, the effect on Norwich’s capabilities was compounded by Alex Tettey (£4.5m) having to come off with a muscle injury in the 13th minute.

Farke admitted after the game that replacement Moritz Leitner (£4.5m) probably wasn’t quite ready to enter the fray, doing so only because the options were limited.

It seems likely that Norwich being reduced to second-string options all over the defensive departments cannot be too helpful for them away from home.

Therefore, it is worth tracking Farke’s next press conference ahead of the trip to Crystal Palace, who have conceded just once in three home matches this season.

“(Tettey) felt a strain in his groin. I think it’s a muscle injury. It was unlucky that he had to come off because he was more or less our last holding midfielder who was available. Moritz Leitner wasn’t prepared for playing such a long time, but he had to come on the pitch and put in a decent performance. In general, it’s a tricky situation but it is what it is, so it doesn’t make any sense to cry or complain.” – Daniel Farke

Not only is Norwich’s attacking play reliant on defenders playing out from the back, but their goalkeeper also plays a part in that.

As we found during our research into the Canaries over the summer, Tim Krul (£4.5m) was top of the Championship for successful short-range passes last season.

However, in Gameweek 6, the former Newcastle shot-stopper was restricted in his contribution to Norwich’s movement of the ball because of a back problem.

He was able to play the whole game with the help of some strong pain-killers but Farke explained after the match that Krul had struggled in the warm-up and could have come off at half-time.

Fantasy managers might want to keep an eye on his fitness this week as he does play an important role for this Norwich side.

“It didn’t help that we had injury problems before the match. Tim Krul had to stop his warm-up and came in before kick-off with back problems. We tried to get him through this game anyhow, but it wasn’t easy. He’s one of our last leaders on the pitch, so with his injury, he was a bit more concentrated on himself instead of leading the group. We wanted to substitute Tim at half-time because he felt the pain even more. Thankfully, he did finish 90 minutes in the end because it was important to have him on the pitch. We have to wait for the outcome of that. I hope it’s not too bad because we have too many defensive players injured.” – Daniel Farke

All of those problems aside, Pukki still had chances to score against Burnley, denied by a good Nick Pope (£4.6m) save when he went clean through at 0-0.

The striker had other opportunities in the second half but was stifled by a Burnley side that has typically limited attackers in the penalty box at Turf Moor under Sean Dyche.

Cantwell offered a little less, restricted to a difficult headed chance early on, but it seems unlikely that Farke will make changes to his offensive players for Gameweek 7.

“We have to grow a bit, otherwise all the other clubs would be playing with a group of young players. We have to stick with them. We can’t punish them, just to make it clear that a reaction to come back into the game at 2-0 down is important. There were some positives to take, but we do have to speak about the first 15 minutes, that’s for sure.” – Daniel Farke

Barnes blanked against Norwich as Wood got his first attacking returns of the season

Meanwhile, there was some disappointment for those still invested in Ashley Barnes (£6.7m) as he registered a third blank in a row.

Ahead of a trip to Aston Villa, this week will prove to be a test of patience for his owners as he was probably unfortunate not to score against Norwich, after looking fairly anonymous in the previous two outings.

Barnes’ blank was probably all the more frustrating given that Burnley, as expected, capitalised on Norwich’s shortcomings in defence, but it was Chris Wood (£6.2m) who benefitted the most.

As predicted by Paul in his Scout Squad submission, the New Zealand international finally got his first goal of the season with a headed effort from a set-piece, a situation Norwich have struggled to defend against so far this season.

“For the set-piece, I was pleased with my staff because there are certain things they work on and they deserve a lot of credit for that.” – Sean Dyche

“It’s been a little time coming but it’s nice to be off the mark and rolling. I backed myself that they would come. I knew that it was hopefully only a matter of time. You want to get off the mark but as a striker, you know the next chance is around the corner so you can’t get too disheartened or too down. You’ve just to make sure you’re ready for when they do fall so you can stick them in the back of the net. It was nice to get two goals up for the team and we never looked like conceding after that.” – Chris Wood

It was Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) who was arguably Burnley’s best player in Gameweek 6, getting his third assist of the season, and his first at Turf Moor.

He gave Sam Byram (£4.4m) a torrid afternoon and put the ball in for Wood’s second of the game. The 19-year-old has been making a real name for himself over the last year at Burnley and with appealing fixtures on the horizon could challenge for a place as a fourth midfielder in FPL squads.

“For the second (goal), we know what a good young player Dwight is. He keeps developing all the time and he’s got great feet and pulls a lovely ball back. Woody is on the spot and it’s a great bit of movement and a good finish because they are not easy.” – Sean Dyche

Pieters earned himself a bonus point on top of his clean sheet in Gameweek 6

After a long wait, Burnley finally kept their first clean sheet since the opening weekend of the campaign. A lot could be read into a four-match run without a shut-out but the Clarets have still gone unbreached in two of their last three at Turf Moor.

Furthermore, they conceded virtually the last kick at Wolves in Gameweek 3 after their hosts had created very little, while Dyche’s side have also had to face Arsenal and Liverpool.

Either way, Burnley’s clean sheet potential remains one of the best in the Premier League right now, of particular interest for those hoping to find decent budget defenders in what remains a fairly poor pool.

Erik Pieters (£4.7m) had been written off as a flash in the pan after 14-point haul against Southampton in Gameweek 1, but may still have something to offer compared to his defensive colleagues.

Firstly, it is clear that he has nailed down the starting spot at left-back, having played 90 minutes in every match so far, Charlie Taylor (£4.3m) yet to register a single appearance.

Secondly, it appears that Pieters has been offering some threat going forward, the local press describing him as “unplayable in attack” against Norwich. He made some good overlaps with McNeil and could be one to watch for further offensive returns this season.

Finally, Burnley’s clean sheet was kept intact by that aforementioned Pope save in the first half. After the match, Dyche revealed that the goalkeeper had suffered from an illness in recent days, making his performance all the more impressive.

“It would have been a travesty (to concede), although Nick (Pope) made one good save to be fair. But over a 90-minute game, you may have to make a save and I was pleased because he was ill yesterday and came through that with good focus.” – Sean Dyche

Kane does not offer value. Great goal last time out but his premium price means Son and Lamela offer more value.
Better with Aguero or Aubameyang as the main forward.
Abraham looks good. If he can keep some form over the next 6GW there will be goals.
Apart from GW7 Digne looks good until Liverpool Away in December, but I can understand getting rid.
A bit soon to get Maddison. Wait for injury news at least!

I'd do Haller -> Abraham and sit tight for now.

    Or

    TEAM B

    MANE KdB Son Cantwell GUENDOUZI
    Auba KUN GRENWOOD

Should just add that Mane&Kun are huge dufferentials in my league. Would appreciate your opinions. Thanks.

Auba and Kun is pretty difficult. You have done well to manage it in B.
Wait for injury news on Mane.

B leaves you low on Chelsea coverage given they are a good team and their run of fixtures I'd want at least one of Mount/Abraham.

Thanks and I know, forgot to mention that is also a problem. Want to have Che with that fixtures but Kun is on fire, like old wine still got it. I also have option with Kun and Tammy but without KdB.

        Pope Button
        TAA Soy Guilber Lund Rico
        Salah Son Cantwell Guendouzi Choudhury
        Auba Kun Tammy

Really dont like that midfield and I ll have to lose KdB. What do you think about that?

The app is dodgy imo, I always use the computer to finalise my squad for the deadline. Don’t trust the app at all, might lag or something and not actually update your changes. At least on comp when you confirm everything you can check 100%, feel like a bit of lag in the app might not always save things.

The top transferred out player so far this gameweek? Sterling. By a long way.

Are they being hasty though? Raheem Sterling has proven time and time again that he is a fantastic FPL asset but following two blanks and one benching he’s being sold en masse. Some will argue that patience is the best option – after all with Sane out for a number of months Sterling should start the vast majority of games.

Of course, there’s arguments the other way. Adam Hopcroft points out that in the last PL 12 matches when both Aguero & Sterling have been in starting line up with KDB, Aguero has picked up 13 goals & 5 assists whilst Sterling racked up just 7 goals & 2 assists. Could this be reason enough, given recent events, to warrant making the switch? Or do you prefer to look at the bigger picture and that Sterling has been consistently in the top 3 FPL scorers in the last 2 seasons?

No question that sterling had been looking tired for weeks. He needed that rest to get back up to speed. A couple of games later he’ll be the go to man again

If I had him i’d Hold for sure. I was one of the lucky ones who shifted on WC after his first blank. Now he’s had his rest (and should do in mid week too) then we will have the old sterling back I think

One his price has taken a dip I may relook at the situation.

Want to see what happens with the Cup game this week and then next CL fixture.

Also no point in me having Sterling if I won't be capping him.

FPL is all about adapting. Selling Sterling doesn't mean you'll never own him again. If it was suggested a few weeks ago that Sterling would get 3, 2, 0 from Brighton (H), Norwich (a) and Watford (0), most of us would have laughed it off.

Everton (a), Wolves (H) and Palace (a) are hardly great fixtures in comparison to the likes of Son who has Southampton (H), Brighton (a) and Watford (H).

Equally though, patience can often be rewarded especially when dealing with premiums - they tend to pick up returns wherever, as long as the fixtures aren't top 6 / top 2 teams. Will Spurs match City even with City having in theory tougher games? Wouldn't be so sure.

Just playing devil's advocate really, given my current WC team has Son and not Sterling. But there's certainly many different ways to look at it.

Aguero will eat away at Sterling's points with KDB on the pitch.

Plus we may see a trend where Kun is rested for Cup and CL which does not bode well for Sterling.

City smashed a record 8-0 without Sterling on the pitch.

I am happy with Kun and KDB for now.

Aguero could have absolutely slaughtered Sterling owners / Aguero non-owners this week if he'd put his multiple big chances away - imagine there would have been a gigantic number of Sterling sales if he had.

How many games of Aguero outscoring Sterling will it take for your finger to start twitching? 😉

Sterling is too explosive. Even Bilva managed to score a hattrick in this city side. I think any city will be scoring for fun. Sterling was unlcuky not to get points, the rest will give him a boost. I think City will continue to dominate, and Sterling is about to haul. There are no options to replace Sterling in FPL. Sterling is the only midfielder who can score 3-4 goals and 2 assists in one game. I ll still captain him next game no matter what.

Could equally argue Aguero is explosive and in the past he's certainly been more explosive in the past. Wouldn't that make him a good replacement for Sterling (with 2 transfers mind)

true but 2 ft is a luxury for most of the players atm. I would stick to Sterling for 2-3 gws, if no hauls, then I would get Auba with 2ft.

WC activated. Had him before that, now leaning to combo of Kun&KdB. In both cases have Auba and Son; just with the latter I lose Salah for Mane to enable it.

But then I have to ditch pool and I am not prepared to do that, they have 6/6 and never mind the fixtures just cant be peaceful without any of them. And combo of Mane,KdB, Kun, Auba, Son is more then great. But I see your point and if someone goes that way cant blame him.

I'm sticking with him. He's a pretty inconsistent point scorer (partly due to rotation) but when he hauls he tends to go big and if you keep buying and selling you just miss the hauls. I always think with proven players the more you stick with them the more you're rewarded.

I've decided that it's Salah OR Sterling for my team atm, KDB/Son look like fairly regular points scorers and I would now be happy to captain either of them. Salah -> Sterling GW9 and then back again GW13 is my current thought, wildcard there to get them both in if needed.

With a wildcard in hand that sounds alright, but I would warn that hopping between premiums and burning FTs doesn't often work, especially when you'll definitely want Salah back for his fixture run!

But yes, with a WC the risk of getting caught short with not enough FTs is nullified to a fair extent.

these guys generally score so well in nice fixtures that I'm not particularly worried about taking -4s - WC is mainly for if I decide it's a mistake to not just have both - that will mainly depend on how Haller/defence does I think

Salah over Sterling for the next reasons.

      1. Salah on penalties and sharing set pieces.
      2. Salah will not be benched.
      Salah will not be rotated.

Sure he will be subbed every now and then with 15 minutes or so to spare.

The big thing is Sane's absence. Sterling's easiest hauls came from tap ins from crosses from the left. Now he's permanently on the left himself, he'll still score, but the points won't come as easily.

And yet he already hauled once with a hattrick. Think it is just coincidence that he blanked three in a row. He will still have hauls maybe just less frequently.

      I'm in two minds.

On one hand, having a 12m+ player in your team that you can't trust to captain (3 fails in a row!) is a big issue for me (although think he was very unucky vs Norwich to get nothing) as if i can't captain him he's probably too expensive.

On the other hand, he has been consistently one of the top 3 players last two seasons and his next 5 fixtures look great on paper. He's had a rest now too. Had a play by removing him for Son but then couldn't find anywhere obvious to spend the 2.5m anyway so i am keeping him for the next 5 and review after that.

From my observation, once City is trailing and Pep goes all out attack, like playing both Kun and Jesus, like what happened vs Norwich, Sterling will play much wider to the left while Kun and Jesus occupy the penalty box. And this season they have been conceding goals, which may motivates Pep even more to play more attacking. I don't know, just my 2 cents. I sold Sterling to get Son and Tammy, that run of fixtures are too hard to ignore. And ditching Sterling now doesn't mean letting go forever, can always get him back and he is on form, a hit is more that worth.

It's just what I think, ironically Sterling becomes less of an attacking threat once Pep goes all out. He is pushed much wider to stretch the opponent's bus and thus creating more space for Kun and Jesus in the box. But Sterling is still hell of an asset and owning him is totally understandable. It's just that atm I personally favor Son and Tammy.

      Pope (Button)
      TAA, Mendy, Pieters (Lundstram, Kelly)
      Kdb(vc), Sterling, Son, James (Cantwell)
      Vardy(c), Pukki, Wilson

I'll probably switch c back to Kdb. Will his form continue away from home?

I did Sterling -> Aguero last week using 2FT, knowing that I still have my WC so I can re-evaluate in a few weeks. Aguero could've easily walked away from that game with 20+ points so I actually feel quite hard done by. He's also incredibly consistent this season which Sterling is not. You can't have them all and Aguero just feels like a better option atm.

I get surprised how fast opinion changes on these pages, even seasoned players. Sterling will always be a great choice. His stats are still good and now he is rested which we all knew would happen at some point. Man City looking good (except Norwich). Although I accept the appeal of Aguero.

Triple up on Aguero, Sterling and KDB and problem solved. City have better fixtures than Liverpool and in a better form offensively.

Both Sterling and Aguero are cheaper than Salah.

If your considering selling any premium attacker, it should surely be one of Mane/Salah after the Shefffield united game. Even if Salah should outscore the likes of Aguero/Sterling by a small margin, the extra cash bodes well, at least for my team.

And yes. I'm a Liverpool fan currently not owning Salah nor Mane and have not done it since gw2. I got Aguero, Sterling, KDB and Son as my premium priced options.

With the next 5 games looking juicy af, and the next 2 UCL games at home, is it not reasonable to assume he'll be more likely rested for the UCL, and play at least 4 out of the 5 Prem games?

I certainly think it warrants the risk to keep him.

The rash part of me wants to move on (as I could do Sterling and Kane to KDB and Aguero), however, the more reflective part of me thinks that in order to win at Pep Roulette, you need to keep your chips long term in the game to score. Last week it was KDB, this week it was Sterling, who knows what next week is. It’s a long season, and we will undoubtedly have several more surprising benching from Pep.

Said this before and will say it again.

Cresswell is underrated. Man United should have signed him when Blind left.
Shaw is inconsistent and Young is Young.

Sort out Lingard. He's bench warmer at best. Probably could do well in Championship. Definitely not Sanchez replacement.

They lack of creativity. Mata needs a replacement. Pogba full of himself.

They weren't actually really bad yesterday tbh. Lack of desire, leadership more like.

Jesus no cresswell has had one good season for us he is shite man. Slow, positionally unaware and weak. Was great as the LCB under moyes but he is by no means a left back anymore.

Lingard is a great asset when surrounded by quality players. He is a space creator.

This I agree with they needed to sign Bruno or eriksen in summer.

They were bad come on, without Pogba and martial they are pathetic they are the keys to the success of United this season

Masuaku is back from suspension, much better in attack and defence. A free kick isn’t good enough to keep a place in that West Ham team. Diop would be my pick

Man, he must be bad if Masuaku is better defensively unless he's improved a lot since last season, I remember him being awful when he first started at left back in a 4. Rival has Diop so was just looking for an alternative but he does seem the pick.

I think at full strength playing with confidence a bruno/eriksen/maddison is the key missing piece towards being back towards top 6 - martial, rashford are equals to the likes of abraham etc who are being lauded, but leaving genuinely outlets to Rashford and James with pogba/martial out is asking too much. Martial is a better poacher than Rashford, rashford creates the space for that though. Pogba a big loss, but need other creative players around him again for it to not all depend on him...

      Mahrez or David Silva

Silva probably (even tho I feel he's kinda overperforming atm. But could also say he's in form of course)

Mahrez a bit too inconsistent minutes wise

Is it fair to expect West Ham to keep up their good defensive performance?

Their xGC last season was 66, but they only conceded 55 (so conceded 11 goals fewer than expected).
Their xGC this season is 12, but they have only conceded 7 (so conceded 5 goals fewer than expected).

Assuming that West Ham are much better defensively than their xGC (let's be very kind and say 20% better) - it still seems unsustainable that they can concede at a rate they have so far for the rest of the season. If they are 20% better than xGC then you would expect them to have conceded 9/10 goals so far.

They have already played Man City and conceded 5, but the xGC for that game was only 3. So that means they have massively over performed defensively in their other 5 games so far this season.

It’s strange watching us at the moment. We’ve played very bad teams at very good times I think. A goalkeeper like fabianski makes a huge difference. Last season he had by far the highest xG prevented at like over 12 or something stupid. However this Ogbonna Diop partnership with Fredericks looking like a rock at the back alongside Rice in the form of his life we may well be becoming a defensive unit. 4.5m is a reasonable price to get into that defence is not a bad idea right now with our fixtures I think. Haller has made our possession retention a lot more reliable which has made a massive difference too.

I've had him since GW 3, might transfer him out around GW 10..
The thing with Son is that he is explosive only for a few GW's when no one else contributes much to the team, after that the other players like Eriksen, Alli step up.
This trend has been continuing for the last 3 years.

      Barnes owners, keep or sell?
      If sell for whom?
A popular one seems to be abraham.

It's easy to sell after 2 blanks but I would hold for at least one more week.

Burnley are facing avl which is top of the table for goals attempts conceded with 111.
Second for goals attempts conceded in the box with 66.

Brighton have been equally with liverpool for goals attempts conceded with 65 and again equally with liverpool for goals attempts conceded in the box with 36.
