Sterling scores as popularity falls among top 10k managers

Raheem Sterling‘s (£12.1m) popularity among the top 10,000 managers continues to shrink, although he punished his sellers in Gameweek 7.

Those that kept faith in the Manchester City midfielder were rewarded for their patience, not just in the form of points for their teams, but for the differential over those around them who moved him on.

After the Gameweek 6 deadline, Sterling sat in 48% of teams inside the top 10k, and was the third most popular midfield asset, behind only Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.9m).

However, Saturday morning’s deadline has seen him drop to just 30% ownership in the upper echelons.

That makes him the fifth-most popular midfielder, behind Mason Mount (£6.6m) on 44.4% and Todd Cantwell (£5.0m) on 43.9%.

We knew that Sterling had been ditched by a large number of managers worldwide, but it is perhaps surprising to see his stock fall even among those in the top 10,000.

That said, it is probable that Sterling’s no-show in Gameweek 6 was responsible for shaking up the standings at that level initially as those without the midfielder were among that round’s highest-scorers.

Meanwhile, his performance at Goodison Park, in which he wasted a one-on-one chance with Jordan Pickford (£5.6m), may leave his owners in something of a quandary.

Despite that dreadful miss and a largely poor display, he still managed to get one effort over the line, spotted by goalline technology.

Not surprisingly, de Bruyne is now the most-fashionable asset in any position among the top 10k. The Belgian is currently in 85.8% of teams at this level – and celebrated his newfound popularity with two assists in the win over Everton.

Lundstram continues to be an incredibly popular FPL asset

As he continues to prove his value this season, John Lundstram (£4.4m) has risen to become the most popular defender among the top 10,000.

The Sheffield United man now sits in 64.6% of teams at this level having gone into Gameweek 7 as the top-scoring player in his classification.

This season’s most successful managers so far are generally looking for value in defence as the number of premium options being considered continues to fall.

Martin Kelly (£4.1m) and Diego Rico (£4.1m) are both in the top-five most-owned defenders among the top 10k, bringing the total of sub-£4.5m options to three.

Alexander-Arnold is now more popular than van Dijk in the top 10k but was outscored by him in Gameweek 7

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) has also been on the rise, perhaps at the expense of his colleague Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m).

The right-back was in 32.7% of top 10k teams in Gameweek 6, his centre-back colleague in 36.7% of them.

However, they have swapped over now, Alexander-Arnold now the more popular at the top level. He is in 43.1% of teams in the top 10k, while van Dijk is in just 27%.

Such a switch will have stemmed from Alexander-Arnold’s propensity for attacking returns although, in Gameweek 7, he was outscored by van Dijk, who collected bonus points at Sheffield United.

Up-front, the picture remains fairly similar to before, although it may change for Gameweek 8 given the host of blanks for the popular strikers this weekend.

Teemu Pukki (£7.2m) remains the most fashionable in this position, while Tammy Abraham (£7.5m) and Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) complete the top three – all goalless in Gameweek 7.

Captaincy largely went poorly for most managers in the top 10k

Speaking of goalless, that’s exactly what most of the captains were in the top 10k, as most FPL managers experienced a rotten start to Gameweek 7.

Salah was the most skippered option in the upper echelons with the backing of 26.5% of managers in the top 10k.

He came close to attacking returns at Bramall Lane but forced a strong save from Dean Henderson (£4.5m) when he was played through.

Aguero was just behind the Egyptian on 23% backing among the top 10k, not even start Manchester City’s trip to Everton, featuring only as a 65th-minute substitute – although claiming a late assist.

Ahead of Chelsea’s hosting of Brighton, Abraham was backed as the differential option by 16.2% of the top 10k.

That selection of managers will have been most frustrated to see the forward not take Chelsea’s second-half penalty, dispatched by Jorginho (£5.0m).

Finally, we can see once again that each week brings more weight to the findings among the top 10,000 managers.

In the early stages of the campaign, there was a high proportion of those who had used chips extensively in the first few Gameweeks.

However, we are now seeing that nearly 40% of the managers at this level are yet to use a single chip yet this season.

Meanwhile, 39.9% of them have already used one chip and we can see from the detailed breakdown that the Wildcard is now up to 44.7% usage in the top 10,000 managers.

How do you choose between Vardy, Wilson, Tammy, Pukki from GW9 onwards

Time to cash in & hop off the Pukki party?

I think I’m giving Pukki his farewell appearance v AVL as captain.

      Then binning him for Vardy.

      Tammy and Aguero remain put.

Wilson’s jam will run out some day.

I feel that it doesn't matter too much of the choice, the consistent correct captaincy seems to be the key to climb up ...

    Heaton
    TAA Pieters Kelly
    Sterling(c) Salah(vc) Mount Zaha
    Haller Wilson Pukki

    Button Lundstram Cantwell Digne

    I am holding 0.9itb and 2ft.
Now have the exact money to take -4 hit and go:
    Digne > Tomori
    Salah > Mane
    Zaha > KDB

I have all chips unused but do not think I need a WC yet. Salah to Mane being the tough choice... Thoughts on this?

    Cheers

If I really thought that Callum Wilson is a 38 goals a season guy I would have had him from the start, bought him at 7.8m becasue imo consintent returns even if only in single figures are good enough.

Lampard has praised him. why bench him when he's playing well ? ihe's above chirstensen zouma for now and for 4.5 worth a punt for a chelsea def

rudiger back will likely displace on of chistensen or zouma. him being back will further increase chelsea defence solidity

Tbh I know Vardy crossed but that was supposed to be a fantasy assist. These assist rules are just rubbish. I don't get why a player will get an assist for a handball in the box by the opponent then a slightly deflected cross which was still heading towards the intended direction was not given...

Vardy was crossing to another player. Close to 45 degree deflection.

              1. Party time
                  4 years, 6 months ago

Oh man! I saw the cross but you know we can't really say if he was using his technique to curve that ball back to Pereira before it took a very slight deflection( think it was about 30 degrees to be precise) There is an argument there tbh but I get it. I just accept whatever the tower decides although they really need to make all fantasy assists assist in order to stop the confusion

Maybe but if I leave it and don't prepare gradually it could be a complete mess with multiple hits to fix it.
I will want TAA and Robbo from 13 for a start and players like Vardy with extended good runs start to look appealing too as set and forgets.
And knowing this game you do the work and all the ones you feared for horrors fixtures probably go and get returns 🙂

There are other great options to City and LFC up to and including GW12.

Vardy certainly one. Auba, Chelsea the others.

I might reduce LFC exposure to TAA and only have Kun and KDB for City. Would have to find an immediate way to get Salah/Mane in though for 13

Go points. I am thinking of holding Mane just no to have the pain of trying to get him back in and I have no other Pool so really the same reason you will hold TAA. But will have to have 2FT for GW13 and probably will still need a hit. Thinking of getting to 2FT and rolling 1 all the way til then while gradually changing the team

I see the ‘average’ score is 40 so far, what about the top ranking teams how did you fare?
I’m on 54 with Auba to come (Salah failed captain choice), but moved from 60k to 32k so assuming it’s fine margins under or over 50 this week?

                A) Boly + Ceballos -> Lundstram + Mount -4 today before Mount rises again
                B) Wait for Arsenal game on Monday, and then Ceballos -> Hudson-Ohoi or Yarmolenko, no -4, keep Boly, no Mount

I don't have any Chelsea or West Ham players at the moment.

I will be priced out of Mount if I wait which is equal to selecting B, just pushing back from Mon to Fri.

Yikes. The team I wildcarded two weeks ago is doing well now.

Aurier has been so bad for me 🙁

Aubameyang (C) next week hopefully pays off

                Would you keep Digne now?

He has Bur (A), WHU (H) and BHA (A) next.

Or just downgrade to likes of Diop or Soy? Thus allowing me to upgrade Cantwell to Mount.

He looked yesterday I thought, could easily have had an assist first half and it’s exciting when he steps up for one of those free kicks. However a double transfer to get Mount is tempting.

Cannot catch a break this season. Don’t think I’ve ever started this poorly. Getting fed up - absolutely. But I couldn’t hit if I tried.

Just hoping my team will come good before the intl break. Can’t face going into that with 4 consecutive red arrows!

Awful GW - one of the worst so far. Barely got 40 points on what i thought at the beginning of the GW will be a high scoring one (or hoping it will be) - i knew it is going to be big red arrow when i saw scout picks and i have 7 of them LOL. The best was my transfer ofcourse - Aurier instead of Tomory - i wanna cry now

                            Question, my team now

                            Salah - Sterling(c) - Mount - Cantwell - Son

                            Pukki - Wilson

                            subs: rico, lund, green

Digne to Otamendi saves 0.5m to reinvest, although not enough to upgrade midfield or defence.

Or go Digne to Peiters which will save 1.3m.
                              Which means I can go:

                              Cantwell to Mcginn/ Yarmenleno
                              Or
                              Pukki to Wilson.

The extra cash looks appealing to upgrade but so do those Man city fixtures!

Cant be bothered to do the math but look at loosing Digne, Cantwell & maybe David Silva and getting the likes of Diop, Ota, Yarmolenko or CHO ?

Why Digne, why Cantwell? Those 2 are a season keepers.

These are the player I wou,d remove to freshen things up.
Cantwell only good in Norwich home games and Digne is one premium defender too many - TAA is a true season keeper.

Honestly I think you were just unlucky your team looks well set. I’d bank a transfer with Norwich having a good fixture.

My god Sterling was poor yesterday, owners very very lucky the ball bounced a centimetre over the line off the bar. Mahrez on the other was quality.

True he was off form but I was satisfied from a fantasy point of view. Should have had a brace if he’d scored that one on one.

Mane and Greenwood to Hayden and Aubameyang?

I can see why you want to move from mane to auba with the fixture shifts. But Greenwood may finally start on Monday so wait and see how he does. If he gets a brace and establishes himself in the team you may regret selling him.

Would anyone kind enough help me please.
I own Cantwell and Pukki like most do, my plan is to sell Cantwell and bench Pukki in all away games and replace Cantwell with a player who rotates with Norwich.
I am not sure on the player as of yet but i will likely have about 8m, i will look into this as of when.

                              Thanks, Dribbles.

I’d just sell Pukki if you won’t play him all the time. Waste of funds

                                Move to Vardy for example

Hmmm you could be right. I can't seem to work out who rotates with Norwich nicely. Selling Pukki is the easier option. Cheers

I get your thinking Dribbles - sell Cantwell and dropping Pukki for away games is a well considered strategy imo. Without knowing your team its tricky! Season Ticker for attacking would indicate the following Teams / Midfield contenders (to rotate with Pukki around £8m): Man C (Bilva / Dilva / Mahrez / Gundogan), Lei (Maddison / Tielemans / Perez), possibly Chelsea (Mount / Pedro / Willian) or maybe even West Ham (Lanzini / Fanderson / Yarmolenko). Good luck 😉

                                    My midfield is...Yarmalenko..Kdb..Pepe..Son..Cantwell.

Cantwell to Maddison is looking very likely then for my plan! Wow.. wow i might actually win fantasy football now

Why are we all getting our captain choice wrong so often? I always go for one of the top three from the poll but last season my captain blanked over 30 times and this season the same looks to be happening, Abraham again this week!

                              (Button, Digne Cantwell Guilbert)

Is my bench in correct order? Or Cantwell first? Or play Digne?

Guys, have 2FTs and 0.1 ITB. Thinking of these moves... yay or nay?

                              1. Auba + Son -> Kun + Yarmo + 2.6itb

I know many are trying to get in Auba but pls read my reasons before killing me:

                              1. Will be capping Kun for next 4 weeks and I think he is a MUST during City's home games
                              2. Arsenal mid is weak which means Auba doesn't get the service to explode. On top of that he likes to gift away his penalties to Pepe!
                              3. For Son, I think Yarmo can match him over his next 3/4 home fixtures. Spurs seem very disjointed and to top it off, Poch hooks off Son early. Plus, I'll take a sweet 0.1 profit on Son.

Rest of the team, if it helps:

                              Pope
                              TAA Ota Ward Lunds Rico
                              Mane KDB Son Mount Hayden
                              Auba Pukki Tammy

I won't. I would keep Auba and Son for sure. Kun is explosive but fear Pep's rotation, Auba nailed. Yarmo is decent but Son is better.
