Captain Poll

De Bruyne injury update impacts on Gameweek 8 captain conversation

Fantasy Premier League managers were rocked on Tuesday afternoon by news that Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m) has picked up a groin problem ahead of Gameweek 8.

The Manchester City midfielder came off in the second half of his side’s 3-1 win at Everton and has since missed training with the first team.

On Tuesday, the club put out an official statement ruling him out of Champions League action this week, in which they offered no time-frame on his return.

“Kevin De Bruyne suffered a groin injury in the win over Everton and will miss the game against Dinamo Zagreb. The extent of his layoff depends on how well he responds to the rehabilitation programme overseen by the medical staff.” – Manchester City statement

At the time of writing, 16% of voters in the latest captain poll had declared de Bruyne as the best option for the armband in Gameweek 8, when Manchester City host Wolves.

However, we would now expect that number to drop in the build-up to the weekend.

Unfortunately, we do not have a specific update on whether de Bruyne will play against Wolves as the club are currently waiting to see how the player “responds to the rehabilitation programme”.

If de Bruyne is out this weekend, then his owners will have make a decision about whether to hold onto him, especially considering he has an international break to make progress in.

Either way, Pep Guardiola’s press conferences this week just became a whole lot more important.

The injury to de Bruyne may help to accelerate a shift in the captaincy conversation, away from the so far usual suspects.

After Liverpool started the 2019/20 campaign with some appealing fixtures, the quality of their opponents is set to rise in the coming weeks.

On Saturday afternoon they host a Leicester side that come into Gameweek 8 with the joint-best defensive record in the top-flight.

They have conceded just five goals in the first six matches of the season, level with Liverpool, who have let in the same number.

For that reason, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is already proving unpopular in this week’s captain poll and that may be the case for the next few weeks.

Liverpool travel to Manchester United in Gameweek 9 before they host Spurs the week after.

Salah, Sadio Mané (£11.6m) and their colleagues may receive some consideration again when they face Aston Villa at Villa Park in Gameweek 11, but Gameweek 12 pits them against defending champions Manchester City.

During that period, Arsenal sit top of the Season Ticker for attacking potential, which should bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) into the conversation.

The Arsenal forward is still without a blank this season and is embarking on even more encouraging fixtures than before.

He starts by hosting a Bournemouth side that has conceded five times in three away matches in 2019/20, which bodes well for Aubameyang to continue his run.

However, despite the latest injury news, some of Manchester City’s attacking options still hold their appeal for Gameweek 8 as Wolves come to the Etihad Stadium.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have struggled to hit the dizzy heights of their first season back in the Premier League and have conceded eight times across their last four matches.

Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) are both expected to challenge at the top end of the captain poll this week, which you can now vote in.

You can find it either below or on the sidebar of our website.

Joe and David also discussed the Gameweek 8 captaincy in-depth on our YouTube channel on Tuesday lunch-time.

I'd lose 0.2 if I sold kdb and want him back straight away.

James is worth holding for Newcastle away isn't he?

Already got haller . Not sure if the yarmo double up is worth it for the palace game....

Alright then. You have reasons to keep who you have already so Guilbert to Lund would be your best move, especially since you'd want Rico and Soy rooted to the bench if KDB misses the Wolves game

I think Cantwell(AVL) is a good option to come off the bench.

Dont want to waste 2 transfes just to sell and get him back for 0.3m more

      Easy save:

      1. Bench options should be good (cantwell/Lundstram/Pieters)
      2. Will encourage KDB to rest over international break (hell, knowing Pep, it could be a ploy to keep KDB out of international duties).

Salah, (S)terling, KDB, Mount, Cantwell, Wilson, Tammy, Pukki

Cantwell is more than enough. Would actually solve a 2-GW bench headache if he's out for only GWs 8 and 9. Would sell if he's announced out longer than that

If it´s only one week i probably leaning towards keeping, but it will make me take a decision to either play Lamela or just sell him so i can field a reasonably good eleven. if lamela does not start vs Bayern i might just play him, but it leaves me with just one player on bench, and that´s Boly vs City... kind of hoping it´s not an injury or a month out but guess is it´s just the weekend.

Depends if its another Martial situation or not. If he says he's hopeful he can make the game after IB, its a risk to take, when you could easily do KDB > Son, and bank some points instead of relying of the likes of Cantwell, Lundstram, Rico etc. Points over pounds eye..

surely kun is better C option than all of them.
wanted to swap sterling to salah(C) but now with kdb case not sure on that
considering kdb + haller to aguero(C) for + dendonker(bench) for a hit and play cantwell
4 coming weeks are just too great, kun looks like a must

For the next 5 game weeks, who would you rather have A) Sterling or B) Salah?

I cannot afford both as accommodating others in the team. Now KDB injured I have no other city coverage for their fixtures (attacking wise, have Ota). I was thinking about doing this regardless and switching back to Salah GW13/14 after Liverpools more difficult fixtures and City's favourable home fixtures.

            A. Take a one week punt on Son or Mahrez.

How long usually takes a groin injury recover? I bought KDB for 9.8 so I wouldn't mind getting Son as a placeholder until he comes back

              Medical opinion: we don't know

Barnes recovered from a tight groin within two days (I seriously think it was cramp from sex). Martial is still recovering from his (or was it hip?)... So it's a wild guessing game

Would have been easier if the City medical team gave any sort of a timeline, but here we are. Wait for the possibility of Pep giving a timeline in the pre-GW8 press conference

Could be anything.... there isnt much detail in the statement City released. A strain could be one week, a tear could require surgery and several weeks of recovery. Because he got it v Everton and was walking around after the game, it doesn't appear to be serious so I'm guessing he'll be back after the international break.

It might be a blessing in disguise. Martinez is a tool and he would probably play him for 90mins versus both San Marino and Kazakhstan. With this injury KdB may rest and recover

Trossard already missed 3 GW's with his groin injury. He is only expected back the 19th of October. He could still miss another 3 GW's.

City's statement pretty vague. I do not like it.

groin injuries are extremely difficult to say something about without medical examination, because it is an area both connected to hip and knee. Depending on where and how the pain/strain is located and affecting other areas will be key to determine it. That´s prolly why the are vague about it. Pep usually gives away timeframe when he knows, so before weekend i guess we all know it-)

            0.7ITB, 1FT
            Pope (Button)
            TAA Otamendi Lundstram (Rico Soy)
            Sterling KDB* Son Cantwell (Nakamba)
            Aubameyang(c) Abraham Pukki

Had KDB since gw1 so don't really want to ship with all that value tied up in him..
Don't like the look of any of the bench options to come on for him either . Could upgrade Rico to Tomori potentially but I do like the value Rico provides.

Pukki will be my 8th captain from 5 different teams this season.

            Kane 13
            Auba 6
            Mane 3

            Kun 6
            KdB 17
            Son 5

Moderate perhaps. Interestingly I’ve scored 53 from my captains so far - exact same from perma captain Mo so many seemed set on preseason. Suspect I’ve had more fun 🙂

Looking at Abraham in 9 and Vardy 10. May need to start repeating after that.
