Salah and de Bruyne sold by chunk of top 10k managers this week

A chunk of high ranking Fantasy Premier League managers opted to sell Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) for Gameweek 8.

The Manchester City midfielder was ruled out of the meeting with Wolves this weekend after suffering a groin injury against Everton.

Manager Pep Guardiola described the issue as “not serious” this week and seemed optimistic that de Bruyne would be back after the upcoming international break.

However, that relatively positive update on the player was not enough for a sizeable portion of managers currently ranked inside the top 10,000 places worldwide.

Going into Gameweek 7, de Bruyne was sat in 85.8% of teams at this level, more than any other Fantasy asset.

However, his ownership in the top 10k dropped to just 59.9% for the Gameweek 8 deadline.

That represents an ownership drop of 25% at this level of the game.

Some of that might be influenced by a change of personnel inside the top 10k, but considering de Bruyne scored nine points against Everton, it seems unlikely that many teams without him earned green arrows into the upper echelons.

Considering the Belgian international was sold by 795,000+ managers worldwide for Gameweek 8, it seems likely that his drop in top 10k popularity was heavily influenced by these sales.

The Fantasy community will almost certainly be holding its collective breath over the international break as we await further information on de Bruyne’s recovery – so it will be interesting to see how much ground can be gained by this chunk of managers as they go without him for at least Gameweek 8.

All eyes will be on de Bruyne’s fitness situation after the international break

Another premium option moved on by this season’s highest-ranking Fantasy managers was Liverpool man Salah.

He was sat in just 54% of top 10k teams at the Gameweek 8 deadline, a drop of 16% from the 66.1% recorded ahead of Gameweek 7.

Those sold the Egyptian for Gameweek 8 breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday afternoon as Liverpool were largely restricted by Leicester City.

The Reds did win the match courtesy of a James Milner (£5.3m) penalty but it was scored after Salah had come off with a knock.

Whether he would have taken it had he still been on the pitch is hard to say given that Milner has historically taken spot-kicks even when sharing the field with Salah.

The injury did not look too serious at the time and he will have an international break without any match duties to recover.

However, Jurgen Klopp did seem angry about the challenge on him from Hamza Choudhury (£4.5m) and did not paint a positive picture.

“How can he be okay? He was limping from the pitch and you ask me if he’s okay! How can he be okay?! Did you watch it back? Watch me, what do you think?” – Jurgen Klopp

With De Bruyne and Salah both losing support among the top 10k, it is interesting to see which premium options increased in popularity for Gameweek 8.

It appears one of the most common recipients of those players’ funds was Raheem Sterling (£12.1m).

The England international’s popularity within the top 10k rose from 30.6% to 38.2% for Gameweek 8.

However, Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) also saw a dip in popularity for this weekend, dropping from 52% ownership in the top 10k for Gameweek 7 to just 40.5% for Gameweek 8.

To see where some of these funds have been moved to, a look at the Gameweek 8 Wildcard template among the top 10k gives us some clues.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.0m) recent form has convinced 49.8% of managers at this level who Wildcarded this week to include him in their squad ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to the Emirates Stadium.

Also included among the most popular Wildcard targets was Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) selected by 36.2% of top 10k Wildcarders for Gameweek 8.

The absence of de Bruyne from this selection shows that the Algerian has been pounced upon as a short-term opportunity while the Belgian is out.

Despite Aubameyang’s popularity on those Wildcards, and being signed by 210,000+ managers worldwide, for Gameweek 8, the top 10k were not particularly interested in him for the captaincy this week.

It was a close-run thing for the most popular captain in the upper echelons of the world rankings, Aguero and Sterling both backed by a similar amount.

It was the Argentinian who topped the charts for top 10k captains, 23.5% of them handing him the armband for that meeting with Wolves.

Meanwhile, 22.5% placed the armband on Sterling and 13.9% went for Salah.

Aubameyang did not appear in the top three and made up the 40.1% chunk representing ‘Other’ captains.

Aubameyang was captained by just 13% of managers in the top 10k in Gameweek 8, while 6.8% went for Teemu Pukki (£7.2m) and 4.5% backed Harry Kane (£11.0m).

Finally, another look at general chip usage among the top 10k shows that they are becoming more and more a reliable test of high performance.

40% of the managers at this level are yet to use a chip this season, while 37.1% of them have played just one.

According to the breakdown, it is the Wildcard that remains the most popular, used by 39.5% so far.

        i´m there too

really would like to have Wilson but 1.6m is heavy price margin so i decided that Wilson will get more points but King is on pens and while he plays slightly left it actually seems to get him points. It was either Soyuncu/Vardy or Pereira/King but in the latter i would not afford Maddison which i really want, as i like King better than most of the 6m midfielders.

I was debating Cantwell vs Kelly for a long time (4-3-3 vs 3-4-3) and went with Cantwell in the end. That coin flip could have gone the other way for 35 from 6. Still, seems like a nice GW despite KDB injured on my bench.

yep, 29 with 3 to go plus captain. Bot sides of Merseyside cracked inside of 10 minutes to ruin 3 CS. I hate it when i have a defender in a game that is bound to get CS and then one of his teammates stupidly gets himself redcarded. Or whenmy own player does it-) Leicester one shot on target and it goes in.. and i still wonder how Adrian managed to get away from the ball, as goalie you are supposed to throw yourself at the ball not away from it-) That said, Adrian has been a very good stand in for Allison, not FPL wise but apart from that clumsy goal at Southampton he shown that he is a better suit than Mignolet, yes he makes mistakes but unlike Mignolet he has strong mentality and bursts it off.

So far this season, I have not been keen on doubling up on any defense. Maybe Sheffield, Villa, Burnley or West Ham because they are so cost efficient, butvthen I don't have the balls to play 2x on the same GW since it's such a huge hit or miss, so better to "spread the love" IMO. Got rid of double Pool def on GW2 WC, getting rid of Digne shortly afterwards and so far it seems to have paid off. Chelsea def Alonso and Azpi worth to keep an eye on, they look lethal on offense just not yet convinced of the CS.

it was a punt on double liv def in which one costs 4.5. did not work out as good as it could but doubling up can actually be a sword kind of thing as yes risky but at the same time rewarding when it does good. I´m thinking of maybe doubling up with pereira and souyncu, doubling up on chelsea def could be good but i think i prefer to have two slots for them in attack. But something like Tomori and one of the fullbacks could be sound
If you rotate keepers and defs Burnley double also an option as you can make the decision from week to week.

            • 11 Years

Yeah doubling up with a 4.X keeper (or 4.X defender) being one of them seems better than doubling up with 2x premium defender. I was debating whether to go with Adrian myself but decided he won't get a lot of saves, so he's only good for CS whereas other 4.5 GKs (went with Pope) get more saves and might get some CS as well. I rather stick with 1x 4.X GK rather than rotating 2x GK to eliminate the option of making bad choices. Most of the time I choose the wrong captain and I don't want to pick the wrong GK as well.

Leicester def seems legit and even possible double up because Soyuncu is so cheap and the defenders get into a lot of assisting positions.

Chelsea def double up is high risk high reward, should be a great differential option if chasing.

rationale says no but since both the out players now enters mixed or even bad run of fixtures and the ones you put in have good it makes sense and while hits are not recommended you are possibly freeing up a move next week if you do this now. But i´m taking a minus 8 so not sure you should listen to me. If you have to just do one i might be tempted to do pukki-king,

I´m actually looking forward to him being back as it makes Arsenal attack much more potent. Lloris (Button)

        TAA/Ota/Tomori/Lundstram (Montoya)

        Mane/Sterling/Mount (Cantwell/Dendon)

Think Pukki or Digne will have to leave my team - with two free transfers I have been looking at either Hudson-Odoi or Vardy.

Do you think Hudson-Odoi could do better than Mount? - he could be a nice differential.

    a. Digne + Hayden -> Söyüncü + Hudson-Odoi
    b. Digne + Pukki -> Kelly + Vardy
    c. Hayden + Pukki -> Hudson-Odoi + Connolly (this will leave quite a lot of money in the bank)

    Heaton
    TAA, Digne, Lundstram, Tomori
    KDB, Sterling, Salah
    Abraham, Wilson, Pukki

    McGovern, Cantwell, Rico, Hayden

      B

I really want Vardy in but the way my team is set up I’m going to drop on Maddison instead.

Your B choice makes the most sense as you don’t need to invest in another playable defender over the next few games as you have Tomori and Lund.

Can you take a look at my post please?

if Pep benches Kun when KDB, Laporte and Sané is out he is insane
Kun is not only a much better player than Jesus but he is more of a leader on the pitch, Jesus is the exact opposite. Pep will need that leadership and experience in this game. He might turn to both though, but seems more unlikely.

Very happy with my team. Just wondering if I should make the below transfer before price rises hit. Or is it worth waiting the IB to see injuries out?

    Ryan
    TAA / Ota / Lund / Soy
    Mane / Mount / KDB / Sterling / Cantwell
    Pukki / Wilson / Tammy

Transfers would be Cantwell and Pukki to Maddison and Connolly?

The Mane or Salah ownership is frustrating.
Thinking after the City game to have them both and have the best of both worlds.

The way they play gets the wingers more in goalscoring positions, but Firmino often the one to assist them. Like vs Salzburg, he had 3 assists. Salah 2 goals and Mané 1. He would def had outscore Mané and if it was bps for that game he prolly would have 14 points vs Salah´s 15.
And TAA will also provide Firmino from time to time, and it occurs to me that Firmino takes more shots than previous seasons. Baps magnet too, so while he does not have as many goal involvements he tends to get bonus points whenever he is. 2 and 3m price diff is new this year, so could be a viable way. But he takes up a striker spot in which there are bundles ofoption and only three slots.

Not because he's scoring & Mo isn't, but imo most creative outlet in Pool team is Taa & one on the end of it most of the times will be the LW/Striker.

IMO they will work out more or less even over the season, so I'm more than happy to own Mane at almost a million cheaper. Pens aren't enough to sway me to Salah as Milner is on the pitch for half the ones they get.

Think I will give him another couple of GWs too. It's between him & Haller to make way for Wilson, and while Haller hasn't really done anything wrong for me I just don't see him as a particularly explosive FPL player or West Ham pulling up any trees against Everton or SHU. Pukki is so highly owned that he could do me damage if I bin too soon.

    DZ repost:

    Hit the WC button 🙂

The previous team was good. Just preferred my new team too much to justify holding on to what I had before

Old team's linked to my profile. New team:

    Pope
    TAA Pereira Tomori
    Mane Sterling Mahrez Mount
    Vardy Wilson Tammy

    McGovern Rico Lund Dendoncker

    0.0 ITB. TV now at 103.1M, from 104.0M 😀

Pukki and Cantwell are gone. Feeling a Fulham (Mitrovic) vibe from them, which isn't their fault as it's been injuries all over.

Going with two City wingers and no KDB or City defence could hurt, but I haven't been too impressed with the City backline recently. The team's flexible with many exit points so I can still jump on trends with miniwildcards and FTs, if need be. Might end up with Mahrez + Pereira => KDB + Soy if KDB's announced fit before the deadline though

Already had Wilson. Got him in a GW7 hit and keeping until GW11, at least. Norwich and Watford are basically begging for two Callum hat tricks...

I love Pereira as well and he's a huge reason for the WC button in the first place, but Soy covers him somewhat... And KDB is safer than Mahrez by a distance, so it feels like the easier sacrifice :/

Mahrez plays and it isn’t an issue coz it pereira makes up for it and that combo will likely score more but mahrez sits out and Kdb hauls then you’re in trouble

            • 5 Years

As a previous KDB owner, I know this 😀

Getting KDB back if announced fit. Problem is, as a doc, I'm not sure that would happen. Hoping for the best though

Already avoided Cantwell's price drop and had Soy + Mahrez for their price rises this morning, so I'll be able to squeeze in any combo I choose (Soy + KDB vs Pereira + Mahrez) after the press conferences in a fortnight 🙂

Sad that both City and Arsenal are playing at the same time and our boring game of the season is the last for the GW which is gonna be a proper sleepfest with 1 shot on target in total

Possible - but we always feck up and concede a soft goal in these sort of games and end up drawing 1-1

        6 points 🙁 but ...

Ederson, Mount, James, Mahrez, Tammy, Aub C still to come, plus Lundstram off the bench for Matip

Pieters, Salah & Vardy blanks hurts like hell
