Which FPL assets have the best goal conversion rates?

As Fantasy writers and managers, many of us place a lot of emphasis on underlying statistics in our research and articles.

Be it penalty box touches, attempts on goal or key passes, the key performance indicators (KPIs) in both attack and defence can help form our judgements on certain players and teams.

Of course, there is a subculture of Fantasy Premier League bosses who think the whole thing is a load of mind-cluttering claptrap and prefer to rely on the so-called ‘eye test’, gut instinct or basic figures such as goals scored and clean sheets.

There is a statistic that unites the two approaches: goal conversion rate.

This is a KPI that deals in cold, hard fact and tells us how clinical players are with the chances they are afforded.

Being presented with a host of goalscoring opportunities is one thing but if Fantasy assets are not ruthless enough when seeing the whites of a goalkeeper’s eyes, then all the underlying stats in the world mean nothing.

One only has to look at poor Che Adams’ (£5.6m) KPIs – the Southampton striker had five big chances in the first six Gameweeks, an eye-catching statistic had it not been for the fact that he failed to convert any of them or indeed a single one of his 12 attempts on goal overall.

Is goal conversion rate something we should pay more attention to, then?

It is certainly relevant: eight of the current top ten in the Premier League sit in the top half of the table for goal conversion, underscoring the very obvious point that better quality players convert a higher proportion of their chances, no matter how many or few.

The rest of this article will look at the goal conversion rate of various key FPL assets, to see if their current output is sustainable or likely to regress/improve based on past figures.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 9

Looking to use 2FT to move out Mcginn and Zinchencko, getting Maddison but then really struggling to pick between these two...

    A) Boly
    B) Soyuncu

Have them both and looking to get rid. Better options out there I believe.

Tomori, Who faces Burnley, Watford and Palace next three games looks a steal at £4.7 million.

      Also, Pieter's and Targett

Thanks, I already have Tomori, fixtures are so poor for Targett and Pieters aren't too much better, when it comes to cheap-mid defenders I like to have good fixtures, Leicester and wolves both tick those boxes which is why I am thinking about them

@Master Roshi Pereira and Willems looks equally good too. West Ham (A), Bournemouth (H) and Aston Villa (A) next three games for Newcastle. And, judging the chelsea game they were unlucky, played well. Can see them competing in those games.

    Morning dzz,

    1) Best two striker for Kane and Pukki replacement? already have Tammy

    2) Current backline consists of TAA (flagged), Zincheko (injured) and Tomori (bur) with Rico (wat) on the bench. Worth taking a hit to get rid of Zincheko >> Lundy? (or Awb?)

    1. Konstaapeli

I think KDB and Sterling are the City players to own, but wouldn't be taking hits to do it for this week. It's alright to save and play both this week as both could easily start, champions league doesnt necessarily predict Pep's team sheet

He’s not really a rotation risk this week, even if Pep does the unthinkable again.

Rodri Injured, so Fernandinho will play that role.

Stones and Otamendi the only ones left.

Sir John David Lundstram The First (born 18 February 1994) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League club Sheffield United and is considered an FPL god as of 2019. His clean sheets, goals, assists and bonus points in the 2019-20 season has earned him a knighthood.

Probably. Ota is a risk and could come on for dreaded 1 pointer. I'm undecided what to do about that myself.

Your team is identical to mine except I have Mane and Madd to your Sterling and Yarm. Thinking of doing Madd to Dilva this week as in good form and 2 nice home fixtures.

Other than that main dilemma for me (and you!) is pick 2 to start from Rico/Ota/Lund/Soy and it's tough!

Play Lunds instead of McGinn, seriously.

Both are midfielders, but Lunds benefits from clean sheet points. Sheff Utd have a reasonable chance of a clean sheet vs West Ham. McGinn's output has been effect by Grealish's advanced position in recent weeks.

My guess on probabilities of the big city assets starting Saturday
    Sterling - 60% (it’s coming)
Aguero - 70% (home games seem to be his gig but... it’s pep)

KDB vs Sterling is suddenly a captaincy conundrum.

Was all set on KDB but a 26 pointer from Raheem last night has thrown a spanner in the works. Combine that with Mendy getting brought off early (assuming to be fresher for Saturday which will benefit Sterling).

Who are people on? KDB or Sterling?

Probably a lot of people in the same boat!

I don't actually have KDB atm. Was planning on doing Salah > KDB for the captaincy. Will see how Salah gets on tonight but suddenly I'm doubting that transfer if I'm not going to captain KDB (i.e. Salah could match KDB this week).

I’m on KDB, i don’t own Sterling and my Citeh strategy this season has been to own KDB instead of Sterling since GW1 and invest the cash elsewhere. It is working OK so far, although if Mendy and Sterling start then I might need a bigger sofa!

Why are people suddenly panicking about Otamendi and trying to sell him?

    - Just come back from injury, so starting him on the bench last night was a wise move so he’s fit for the weekend.
    - Rodri injured, so at least for the time being Pep can’t be Pep and play players where they normally don’t. Expect Fernandinho to start at CDM.
    - Stones is fit so he’s naturally the partner for Otamendi. If Pep only had to pick one of those two, I firmly believe that he’d pick Otamendi.

Agreed. He stays in my team for the next 2 fixtures then he's gone.

If anyone is shipping Ota this week then their team must be absolute fire to make such a luxury transfer!

I have shipped Ota this week, I have 2FTs and nothing i needed to do elsewhere. It may be premature but I like my team without him, and the extra cash plus 2FTs will mean I can make some proper changes.

G2G. Wha was your transfer this week out, of curiosity? I'd guess Pukki > Jimenez?!

      Unusual team but good.

I still don't really understand people who ask what to do when they've already used their FT. You should decide your moves for the week in one go and then stick to them unless random last minute injuries happen.

An early transfer was made to take out pukki to jiminez.
with mahrez playing 90 mins and TAA bug news, just concerned whether to take a hit to fix the mid or stick

Yesterday's game has me leaning towards Mahrez -> KdB irrespective of the result of the Bilva ban.

Would you captain KDB over Sterling if you brought him in?

Will match the premium mids for points at the end of the season at a price of approx 2m less, set and forget option unless injured imo

I have always saved my BB for DGW's but not this year. I am not going to manipulate my team unnecessarily and spend time putting it right later.
GW14 where the majority of my fixtures are classed as easy I will have Lund Cant Tamori/Soy on the bench with a playing keeper. Luck will determine my fate but the job will be done.
It has been difficult choosing the bench recently.

Good logic. If team news looks ok and you feel it is right then it is a smart option. BB in dgws recently has been subject to rotation anyhow. I d do it myself but i wont have a playing 2nd keeper until after my WC.

Not at all. Next two games he looks very likely to play. Pep seems to favor him in games where City are heavily favored to unlock defenses.

Heat maps would say otherwise, both all games this season and most recent games. Last GW 49 touches in opposition half etc

            Son + Pukki >

            A) Mane + Connolly
            B) Vardy + Dilva
            C) Vardy + Mount

            Front 7 is:
            Sterling KdB Cantwell Yarmolenko ??
            Aubameyang Abraham ??

                Hard one.
I am looking at Mane. I trust him more than Vardy.

Vardy has all but one of his scores at home. 3 away fixtures in the next 4 make me think Mane too.
