How Aubameyang fared on Lacazette’s return to the Arsenal starting XI

Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Sokratis (£5.0m), David Luiz (£5.8m) | Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m), Jordan Ayew (£5.1m)
  • Assists: Granit Xhaka (£5.3m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) | Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m), James McArthur (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Milivojevic x3, Ayew, McArthur x2

A disallowed goal, a VAR-influenced penalty decision, a set-to between Arsenal’s captain and their fans, a Matteo Guendouzi (£4.7m) rugby tackle, a mass brawl and a two-goal comeback: Sunday’s match at the Emirates was perhaps the most eventful of Gameweek 10.

From a Fantasy perspective, Alexandre Lacazette‘s (£9.3m) return to the Arsenal starting XI for the first time in the league since September 1 was the main talking point.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) has played centrally for the Gunners in the France international’s two-month absence but Lacazette’s Premier League comeback saw Aubameyang move to the left flank to accommodate his fellow premium FPL forward.

A fair number of Aubameyang’s owners will find his move to a wide-left position hard to swallow, given his hefty price tag.

Then there are those who will be undeterred by Lacazette’s availability, pointing to the fact the pair co-existed last season (be it as a bona fide strike duo or with the Gabon international out wide) and that attacking returns for Aubameyang still arrived regularly enough with the two of them in the same starting XI.

The classic fence-sitter’s position is that both arguments are valid.

Aubameyang will continue to rack up the goals and assists and more than likely be towards the top of the FPL forwards’ points list come the end of the campaign, no matter where he is stationed.

There is no question, though, that a central role would be a big help in maximising his Fantasy potential.

Aubameyang has made a habit out of disappearing for large chunks of a match, only to pop up with a goal out of nowhere, so his anonymity against Palace on Sunday was nothing new.

Being played on the left flank, even if he is not a touchline-hugging Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) type, does perhaps make gilt-edged opportunities harder to come by, though.

Aubameyang had only one penalty box touch in Gameweek 10, with both of his shots coming from outside the area.

Touch heatmaps for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (left) and Alexandre Lacazette (right) in Arsenal v Crystal Palace

Lacazette, by contrast, was in the thick of things, forcing an excellent low stop from Wayne Hennessey (£4.4m) early on, seeing a header from a corner saved in the second half and then striking the woodwork from a narrow angle soon after.

In the 256 minutes of pitch-time that Lacazette and Aubameyang have shared this season, the Gabon international has only had one shot in the box.

We’re still talking about a very small data sample in 2019/20, of course, and there are plenty of appealing fixtures ahead for the pair and Nicolas Pepe (£9.3m) to develop more of an understanding and become a potent front three.

It was from two of Pepe’s corners that Arsenal raced into a 2-0 lead: Sokratis (£5.0m) breaking the deadlock after a spot of penalty-box head tennis and then David Luiz (£5.8m) doubling the Gunners’ advantage following a Lacazette flick-on.

Sokratis thought he had grabbed a winner late in the game, only for his strike to be controversially scratched off after VAR intervention.

Arsenal didn’t create a massive amount from open play, however, with Dani Ceballos (£5.4m) again below-par and Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) turning in a display that led to the Arsenal fans cheering his substitution – the Switzerland midfielder reacting petulantly to the provocation.

Kieran Tierney (£5.4m) made his Arsenal league debut at full-back, looking fairly bright down the left flank without threatening to make any headlines with his contributions.

Arsenal’s defensive struggles are as well-documented as Tierney’s attacking attributes, however, and the Gunners let a two-goal lead slip when conceding to a Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m) penalty and a Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) header.

The penalty award, only given after the VAR had overruled the decision to penalise Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) for a dive, and Sokratis’ disallowed goal clearly irked Unai Emery, who said:

For me VAR is positive and we need VAR. But we need to manage that in the right way. At the moment, to us, it’s not working well. I think the team deserved to win this evening. We played with speed when they equalised. I can only be a little bit disappointed that we didn’t control the match better at 2-0, to make sure that we could get a good result.

Palace’s tricky fixture run still has another three or four matches to go (LEI | che | LIV| bur) but they are giving us some encouragement ahead of the swing in Gameweek 15.

Defending has been the strong suit of Roy Hodgson’s side this season but for once it was their attacking assets who caught the eye, with Zaha, in particular, causing Calum Chambers (£4.4m) problems down the left flank and going close to netting a winner late on.

Ayew, meanwhile, made it four goals in eight Gameweeks and now averages exactly five points per game over that period.

The fit-again Martin Kelly (£4.1m) returned to the matchday squad but was only among the substitutes, so it appears that the budget FPL defender’s 25%+ ownership now has to wait on an injury to one of James Tomkins (£5.0m) or Gary Cahill (£4.5m) before their cut-price Palace defender is a starter again.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Chambers, Sokratis, Luiz, Tierney (Kolasinac 75′); Guendouzi, Xhaka (Saka 61′); Pepe, Ceballos, Aubameyang; Lacazette.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Hennessey; Ward, Tomkins, Cahill, Van Aanholt; Kouyate (McCarthy 90′), Milijoevic, McArthur; Townsend, Ayew (Benteke 81′), Zaha.

Is it worth to go Wilson & McGovern (4.0 gk) to Jimenez & Ryan for free and bench boost the following team

    Pope, Ryan
    Rico, TTA, Soy, Lundstram, Tomori
    Sterling, Mane, KDB, Maddison, Mount
    Jimenez, Tammy, Connolly

I issue I have is that Connolly is playing at home to Norwich and I have no way to play him unless I drop someone from my midfield to the bench

Connolly might not start. Trossard and Mooy are available, and Potter is completely unpredictable

There's already a TC DGW. Liverpool's West Ham game in GW19 has been rescheduled. Even if the second game of their DGW is vs City, it's still a TC DGW

The other chips are then for the bigger DGWs after GW30

Yes, but I'm saying we already have a huge chunk of it. The first DGW could be as early as November... So it's good to keep that in mind and already consider the benefits of burning just the TC chip on that, with BB and FH better suited to bigger DGWs. I agree that we're far from the full picture

    Ryan (Button)
TAA I Soy I Lund (Rico | Mohamady)
    Mané I Mount I KDB I Raz (c) (Mads)
    Tammy I Vardy I Connolly

Considering doing this for GW10.. Mads as first bench with Connolly getting the nod.. madness? Or would you take someone else out? Or have Connolly as first bench?
Norwich just seem so poor at the back and place are hard to break down at home..

He's surely nailed on to start given Zinchenko is injured. Angelino is nowhere near the quality of Mendy as an attacking threat down the left and he is more than suspect defensively as well.

You score 9 goals and everyone wants to buy your players. Vardy, Chilwell, Perez and Evans all going up to night (probably)

If only Kun wasn't playing at home (probably) to Southampton on Saturday (of all the teams to play next) I'd have got Vardy at a cheaper price.

Switch now and Kun's guaranteed a hat-trick.(probably) and Vardy will have a quadruple price-rise by Saturday afternoon.

This games can be so frustrating!

true that, transfers arent based on one week either (not normally), its the bigger picture. If you regret decisions like that, well thats when you starting doing stupid things like considering bringing someone back in who you just ditched.

With Fernandinho suspended midweek Stones has to play alongside Otamendi. I can’t see Stones playing 3games in a week just returning from injury but it is Pep we’re trying to predict.

See line up tomorrow- Otamendi probably starts. Fernandinho Stones most likely pairing for weekend but with Rhodri out fair chance Fernandinho moves forward and Otamendi starts alongside Stones.

Because Trossard is back? Connolly is not 100% nailed but very likely to start against Norwich. Alzate might lose his place to Trossard.

Potter changes formations based on available personnel and opponents. Think of him like Pep, but even less predictable. He's been known for this before Brighton

Trossard got injured, Potter tweaked the formation. Trossard is back... Good luck predicting 🙂

I can't get him really, yet to own but like what I see, impressed with him, Potter and Brighton. I miss the heady heights of the top million in that first week.

Yes he changes formations but not as often as people think. He didn't stay that long in Swansea but part of his formation changes were due to the team not performing and looking for an ideal formation for home/away games.

If you look at his Ostersunds career, he didn't change formations as often and he favours playing with 2 strikers.

Which of these combos looks best to work towards over next couple?

      A) Jiménez, Martial, Robbo
      B) Connolly, Sterling, Soy/ def up to 5.2
      C) Connolly, Salah, Soy/ def up to 4.9

      Pope, McGovern
      TAA, XXXX, Lunds, Rico, Willems
      Mané, KDB, XXXX, Mount, Barnes
      XXXX, Vardy, Abraham

      A) brings a tasty level of balance but an unbelievable benching headache as one of the front 8 would need to be benched each week

I couldn’t decide between doubling up this week with Salah and Manè or Sterling and KDB. I went with the Liverpool double up in the end because of their fixtures and not having to worry about rotation.

Unfortunately I already used my 2FT on bringing in Vardy and Barnes. Still have Kun so think I should hold him for this week unless we get definitive news he won’t play and then do one of these moves for GW12

No doubt the millionth time it's been asked, but auba ->vardy - is it chasing points?

      1. Don Kloppeone
        • 6 Years

It is chasing points but justifiably as Vardy is a talisman striker who always plays when fit, scores plenty and the team around him are constantly improving

Even Sterling to KDB for GW7 turned out to be "chasing points" so far, with Sterling outscoring KDB since then. Same for Robbo to TAA in GW5, a move which was highly advised back then

"Chasing points" is hindsight when it comes to sideways moves

But this isn't a sideways move. It's more complex than that. Ask yourself if the move is reactionary or predictive. If you feel you're making the move because you predict more points for Vardy (or similar points but you need the funds to get more points elsewhere), then do it. If you predict that Auba would outscore Vardy and the reshuffled funds will not get enough points to counterbalance this, keep Auba

I just dont know with arsenal.

RMT (not that I put too much faith in it) heavily favours auba over next 6, but he seems to be averse to the decent fixture!

Being pressured by price changes.maybe I should wait.

      Pope — Heaton
Taa Digne Lundy — Tomori Rico
Sterling Kdb Dilva Mount — Cantwell
      Pukki Rashford Tammy

A: Save FT and get rid of pukki (bri,WAT) on a potential gw13 WC

      B: Digne + Pukki >> Lascelles + Vardy (-4)

      C: Cantwell + Pukki >> Martial + Connolly (-4)
