How Aubameyang fared on Lacazette’s return to the Arsenal starting XI

Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Sokratis (£5.0m), David Luiz (£5.8m) | Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m), Jordan Ayew (£5.1m)
  • Assists: Granit Xhaka (£5.3m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) | Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m), James McArthur (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Milivojevic x3, Ayew, McArthur x2

A disallowed goal, a VAR-influenced penalty decision, a set-to between Arsenal’s captain and their fans, a Matteo Guendouzi (£4.7m) rugby tackle, a mass brawl and a two-goal comeback: Sunday’s match at the Emirates was perhaps the most eventful of Gameweek 10.

From a Fantasy perspective, Alexandre Lacazette‘s (£9.3m) return to the Arsenal starting XI for the first time in the league since September 1 was the main talking point.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) has played centrally for the Gunners in the France international’s two-month absence but Lacazette’s Premier League comeback saw Aubameyang move to the left flank to accommodate his fellow premium FPL forward.

A fair number of Aubameyang’s owners will find his move to a wide-left position hard to swallow, given his hefty price tag.

Then there are those who will be undeterred by Lacazette’s availability, pointing to the fact the pair co-existed last season (be it as a bona fide strike duo or with the Gabon international out wide) and that attacking returns for Aubameyang still arrived regularly enough with the two of them in the same starting XI.

The classic fence-sitter’s position is that both arguments are valid.

Aubameyang will continue to rack up the goals and assists and more than likely be towards the top of the FPL forwards’ points list come the end of the campaign, no matter where he is stationed.

There is no question, though, that a central role would be a big help in maximising his Fantasy potential.

Aubameyang has made a habit out of disappearing for large chunks of a match, only to pop up with a goal out of nowhere, so his anonymity against Palace on Sunday was nothing new.

Being played on the left flank, even if he is not a touchline-hugging Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) type, does perhaps make gilt-edged opportunities harder to come by, though.

Aubameyang had only one penalty box touch in Gameweek 10, with both of his shots coming from outside the area.

Touch heatmaps for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (left) and Alexandre Lacazette (right) in Arsenal v Crystal Palace

Lacazette, by contrast, was in the thick of things, forcing an excellent low stop from Wayne Hennessey (£4.4m) early on, seeing a header from a corner saved in the second half and then striking the woodwork from a narrow angle soon after.

In the 256 minutes of pitch-time that Lacazette and Aubameyang have shared this season, the Gabon international has only had one shot in the box.

We’re still talking about a very small data sample in 2019/20, of course, and there are plenty of appealing fixtures ahead for the pair and Nicolas Pepe (£9.3m) to develop more of an understanding and become a potent front three.

It was from two of Pepe’s corners that Arsenal raced into a 2-0 lead: Sokratis (£5.0m) breaking the deadlock after a spot of penalty-box head tennis and then David Luiz (£5.8m) doubling the Gunners’ advantage following a Lacazette flick-on.

Sokratis thought he had grabbed a winner late in the game, only for his strike to be controversially scratched off after VAR intervention.

Arsenal didn’t create a massive amount from open play, however, with Dani Ceballos (£5.4m) again below-par and Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) turning in a display that led to the Arsenal fans cheering his substitution – the Switzerland midfielder reacting petulantly to the provocation.

Kieran Tierney (£5.4m) made his Arsenal league debut at full-back, looking fairly bright down the left flank without threatening to make any headlines with his contributions.

Arsenal’s defensive struggles are as well-documented as Tierney’s attacking attributes, however, and the Gunners let a two-goal lead slip when conceding to a Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m) penalty and a Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) header.

The penalty award, only given after the VAR had overruled the decision to penalise Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) for a dive, and Sokratis’ disallowed goal clearly irked Unai Emery, who said:

For me VAR is positive and we need VAR. But we need to manage that in the right way. At the moment, to us, it’s not working well. I think the team deserved to win this evening. We played with speed when they equalised. I can only be a little bit disappointed that we didn’t control the match better at 2-0, to make sure that we could get a good result.

Palace’s tricky fixture run still has another three or four matches to go (LEI | che | LIV| bur) but they are giving us some encouragement ahead of the swing in Gameweek 15.

Defending has been the strong suit of Roy Hodgson’s side this season but for once it was their attacking assets who caught the eye, with Zaha, in particular, causing Calum Chambers (£4.4m) problems down the left flank and going close to netting a winner late on.

Ayew, meanwhile, made it four goals in eight Gameweeks and now averages exactly five points per game over that period.

The fit-again Martin Kelly (£4.1m) returned to the matchday squad but was only among the substitutes, so it appears that the budget FPL defender’s 25%+ ownership now has to wait on an injury to one of James Tomkins (£5.0m) or Gary Cahill (£4.5m) before their cut-price Palace defender is a starter again.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Chambers, Sokratis, Luiz, Tierney (Kolasinac 75′); Guendouzi, Xhaka (Saka 61′); Pepe, Ceballos, Aubameyang; Lacazette.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Hennessey; Ward, Tomkins, Cahill, Van Aanholt; Kouyate (McCarthy 90′), Milijoevic, McArthur; Townsend, Ayew (Benteke 81′), Zaha.

Trying to get vardy in, 0 itb, what should I do.

    Ryan button
    Trent soy Rico lundstram lowton
    Mane sterling kdb mount cantwell

    A. trent and Wilson to vardy and mendy
    B. Jimenez and Wilson to vardy and anyone else doesn't matter
    C. Mane and Wilson for martial/madisson/dilva/yarmelenko and vardy

I understand selling Wilson. That's the only option I understand here

What's with the Vardy vs Palace rush that makes you want to lose Trent/Mane vs AVL or Jimenez vs THAT Arsenal defence?

          The move below feels nice

Also, I tend to avoid keepers whose hauls came from high-adrenaline games (say, vs big 6), where they conceded 2+ goals yet saved lots of shots or penalties. It's more of a red flag about the defence in front of them

Don't be, since high risk of them both eating each others minutes. Connolly had a bit of luck with his assist points, good fodder though.

Oh, Connolly would be a bench player, it'd mean going 352.

So it's a hit for Trossard? Okay, sounds more like me now. I don't like how short-term it is though. Would be the type of move I'd look at as "Can't have 'em all", even if I think Trossard might be in the GW11 dream team. You're basically booking a GW12 FT

Yeah that's what I'm gonna have to think unfortunately, I reckon Tross as 5th mid will be amazing when their fixtures clear up though. I'd probably do it if they even one had more decent fixture after Norwich because they're absolutely awful.

Trossard from GW15 (vs Arsenal) is the reason I have no fear of owning Perez/CHO now. I can be disappointed for 4 GWs, then I'll switch to Tross if needed

              Awesome player

Normally, I would. But the fact that you're selling Dendo means you're benching a GW11 starter in your team, for a hit, for Connolly. Feels a tad too risky

...except if that starter is Diop

Aguero + Dendo could become Connolly + Sterling after the Cup games and effectively kill off a weekly headache. Ask yourself if you want Sterling or Kun long term, with the new data we have on the gulf between their rotation risk levels (until Sane returns) + the effect of Zinch's absence on Sterling's heatmap, and this can help you stomach a Kun haul even if you sell him this GW

Shouldn't Lowton and Soy be ahead of Rico for this GW?

Your team is fine. Maybe Connolly + Martial/Dilva for Wilson + Cantwell

Getting Vardy for Wilson would involve -4 to lift funds from, say, Soy to Reid (kill the spot) and Cantwell to Dendo/cheaper. If you really want Vardy, this is your chance before he runs from you (like KDB) due to the market rush

Then no KDB is not that much of an issue. TBH i would like to add Dilva to my list instead of KDB. His price is so good.

agree, if he plays anywhere close to the minutes that KDB does he will be a steal

Can't look past Sterling, TAA and KDB for the whole season imo.

Really stuck on what to do with my squad and 2 FTs

I’m stuck with the next moves to make...

    Pope
    TAA / Otamendi / Tomori
    Salah / Mount / Sterling / Yarmelenko / KDB
    Jiminez / Abraham

    Bench: Button, Greenwood, Kelly, Rico

    I have 2FTs and 0.6itb

    A. Otamendi —> Lundstrum
    B. Find a way to get vardy in?
    C. Lose a city mid? If so then for who?
    D. Any other suggestions

I'm doing A but with Rico so endorse the move for Lundstram, nice little cash injection and hold over second FT.

I wonder what percentage of people transferring in Perez owned him early doors, I'm tipping it would be quite low.

Once bitten twice shy. It will be another 9 games before he scores again.

Selling aguero (and probably CHO) after this week as part of a 2-3 transfer move. Best replacement(s)?
    A. Lacazette (with Martial/Silva)
    B. Connolly (with Sterling)
    C. Connolly (with Salah)
    D. Jimenez (with Son)
    E. Rashford (with Silva/Tielemans)

Vardy. Salah just not good enough this season for 12.4.

No transfers think it's finally WC time will be priced out of Mane and Martial if I wait. Thoughts?

    Gazza Austin
    Mendy TAA Soy Lundy Rico
    KDB Sterling Mane Martial Nakamba
    Vardy Abraham Greeny

    Pope Heat
    Ota TAA Soy Lundy Rico
    KAB Sterling Salah Mount Nakamba
    Vardy Abraham Greeny

First one. Ota is probably not a good choice anymore, Martial is a better choice than Mount (until he gets injured) and Salah ankle injury is a concern and he hasn't been on form recently.

You trust that City defence? No defender can match tha attacking potential of TAA & Robbo!

Mendy can if he syays fit. Is cheaper and nailed now with Zinch out longterm

TAA enough imo, I have just ditched the Liverpool double up myself, attacking returns are not outweighing the lack of clean sheets.

I have KDB & Aguero, fed up with the Aguero rotation and plan to sell him after this GW.

Question is is 1 x Man City enough or do I need to get Sterling in to accomany KDB?

You need two attackers from the best attacking team. Period. If funds are an issue Dilva is a good bet. If not, Sterling it has to be!

Would you use 1 of 2 free transfers on Otamendi to Lundstram pre price rise tonight?

If price is an issue definitely, would probably do it even if price wasn't an issue tbf being that you have the 2 FTs.

    A) Salah, Wilson --> Martial, Vardy
    B) Cantwell, Wilson --> Martial, Connolly
    C) Salah, Wilson, Otamendi --> Martial, Aguero, Alonso (-4)

In C, Aguero would become Vardy after Southampton and WC after 2 GWs.
