Captaincy fails for over two-thirds of top 10k Fantasy managers

Manchester City’s unexpectedly narrow 2-1 win over Southampton came at a cost for a large chunk of the top 10,000 managers in Fantasy Premier League.

Between them, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) were handed the armband by almost 70% of the FPL bosses who were inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 11 deadline.

The premium midfield pair duly blanked against the Saints, with Sterling picking up a booking to compound his owners’ misery.

Just under 6.5% of this elite group had more joy with a Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) captaincy, at least, while around one in four top 10k managers overlooked the City trio altogether.

The highest-owned player inside the top 10,000 is Jamie Vardy (£9.3m).

The Leicester City striker, who faces Crystal Palace on Sunday, featured in only 33.25% of top 10k squads ahead of the Gameweek 10 fixtures but his 20-point haul against Southampton has understandably increased his popularity.

Of course, a fair number of the new entrants inside the top 10,000 would have been helped there by owning Vardy in the first place.

The Foxes’ forward was by some distance the most-bought FPL asset of Gameweek 11, being transferred in by just over 675,000 managers.

De Bruyne remains in one in three top 10k squads, with Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) and John Lundstram (£4.7m) – both of whom delivered double-digit hauls on Saturday – also widely owned assets.

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.4m) popularity continues to dwindle, with just over one in four top 10,000 managers hanging onto the Egyptian.

Indeed, Salah doesn’t feature in the top 10k Wildcard template, with Sadio Mane (£11.9m) proving a much more popular buy.

A two-man strike force of Vardy and Abraham is being widely favoured, with budget asset Aaron Connolly (£4.6m) the third-most-popular FPL forward among the elite managers who used their Wildcard this week.

There is predictably a lot of crossover between the template Wildcards inside the top 10k and outside of it, with Salah and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) proving more popular in the chasing pack.

We have now hit the 50% mark for Wildcard usage in the top 10k.

One in four of the top 10,000 FPL managers have already used their Triple Captain chips, with the Free Hit and Bench Boost chips not as heavily relied on.

Chip usage inside the top 10k

Just under 33% of the top 10,000 have yet to use a single chip but over 25% have used at least two already.

2.2% of the top 10k have maxed out on their allotted chips already, leaving only their second Wildcard to be used.

    A) Ota to Robbo
    B) Ota to 4.5 and Cantwell to 7.6 mid

Feel like B gives me much better depth but I’m struggling on which 4th mid I need.

Rotation and benchings are going to become a very bad nightmare under Pep, far worse then some may think.

I almost hit the button to get in Cancelo for a hit thinking he was going to be nailed. Would have backfired sitting with a player who I would have wanted to get rid of immediately!

Pep wants to win the CL this season, beware 🙂

Benchings and rotations are going to get worse as the GW's go by.

What do you guys think about playing without Salah and Sterling?
Both have been underwhelming this season, and replacing them with Chelsea and Leicester assets allows for a spot upfront in case Auba or Kane start hauling. Also it's a chance to build a premium defence with Robbo, TAA and Pereira

I don't follow any of the "celeb" accounts, can't be bothered.

There is clearly a lot of luck involved, especially over an individual season, but to get 10k repeatedly can't be just luck.

I'm having a bad season - plenty of bad luck but plenty of poor decisions too.

It's not just luck, obviously. I don't follow "celeb" accounts either, but do follow the founder of this website. Mark has very good judgement of which players are great FPL picks - whether they reward him or not is largely down to luck. He puts his team in a very good position by not making bad transfers.

This. For two defenders you pick on a wildcard to not start or play any minutes, is just unheard of. 🙂

AH, I see it... 73 all out. Solid return for sure.

Link to the team? 65 for me with 2 to play. I used my WC too and would have had a much poorer return only for it... You can talk about great luck, but how unlucky was it for Sterling to only return 2 (4)?

Cheers. A bad -4 for me, sold Otamendi. Thinking twice about a Chelsea defender now, not so CS friendly.

Besides maybe Cancelo (who might well start v Pool), I have no issues and another green light.

    2 frees.

    Salah to Mane?

Or Sterling to Mane (have KDB), so then a pool double up in mid?

Not sure who to drop... Salah or Sterling for Mane

both have their merits, but I'll prob go for Sterling atm

Annoyingly brought in Sterling this week meaning I captained him over Aguero

Question is... now, who to sell first?
    Aguero to Vardy (obvious)
Aguero to Kane (try and be different)
    Sterling to Tielemans ?
