Martial having a positive impact on United’s other FPL attacking assets

Manchester United 3-1 Brighton and Hove Albion

  • Goals: Andreas Pereira (£5.0m), Davy Propper (£5.0m) own-goal, Marcus Rashford (£8.5m) | Lewis Dunk (£4.6m)
  • Assists: Anthony Martial (£7.7m) x2, Scott McTominay (£5.1m) | Pascal Gross (£6.4m)
  • Bonus: Mathew Ryan (£4.7m) x3, Martial x2, Pereira x1

Swashbuckling at Carrow Road a fortnight ago, feeble at the Vitality Stadium in Gameweek 11: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side are a Jekyll-and-Hyde prospect at present.

Such unpredictably is not ideal for us Fantasy managers given how valued a commodity consistency is in this rollercoaster season, although the relative cut-price availability of the likes of Daniel James (£6.1m) does perhaps allow for a stinker or two along the way.

While the defeat to Bournemouth proved that United are still capable of turning in a dismal display on any given weekend, there is little question that Anthony Martial (£7.7m) makes this current incarnation of the Red Devils a better side when he is available.

The injury-proneness and occasional body language issues are obvious deterrents to Martial from a Fantasy perspective but an ‘out of position’ FPL midfielder who averages over 6.1 points per start in 2019/20 and who is still available for less than £8.0m does merit interest.

The four ‘big chances’ he received against Norwich in Gameweek 10 and the poacher’s goal he scored against Chelsea on the opening weekend were encouraging regarding his own goal threat.

Sunday’s win over Brighton was more Martial the link-up man, with the Frenchman turning creator to supply two assists and bank his first double-digit haul of the campaign.

Pulling wide and dropping deep, Martial’s movement and vision certainly aid the prospects of James, Andreas Pereira (£5.0m) and especially Marcus Rashford (£8.5m) behind him.

Martial teed up the latter two for United’s first and third goals at Old Trafford, going on to create more chances than anyone on show.

What the bare ‘key pass’ statistics don’t reflect, of course, is how the Frenchman’s off-the-ball work leads to chances in itself.

There was one instance in the first half where Rashford cut in off the left flank to test Mathew Ryan (£4.7m) with a low shot, with the opportunity owing much to Martial’s decoy diagonal run that drew Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) away and created space for the England winger to drive into.

Solskjaer said of the France international after full-time:

You can talk about the goals we score but also the link-up play – Anthony’s work through the middle gives Marcus, Dan and Andreas space to run into. I thought Anthony was excellent today.

Martial later teed up Rashford for a gilt-edged chance in the 89th minute, which was one of several spurned by the Englishman.

Being farmed out to the wing can sometimes be to the detriment of a Fantasy asset (Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), perhaps) but in Rashford’s case, it is seemingly to his advantage.

In the six Premier League matches that Martial has started for United this season, no FPL forward has had more attempts on goal than Rashford.

Solskjaer said recently that Rashford is much happier when facing the goal rather than being the focal point of the United attack and he certainly looks more of a threat than he did in a grim six-week period as a striker, the nadir of which was perhaps his display at St James’ Park in October.

Were it not for some profligate finishing against Brighton, Rashford would maybe have registered his own double-digit haul on Sunday.

Not only did the England international spurn the aforementioned chance that Martial set up but he also fluffed a golden opportunity carved out by James 20 minutes beforehand, somehow skewing a shot wide from six yards with the goal gaping.

Rashford also tested Ryan from a narrow angle after a Davy Propper-deceiving (£5.0m) piece of trickery with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Solskjaer said of Rashford after full-time:

You know when you’re annoyed but still smiling, you know you’ve enjoyed your day. You can see he’s enjoyed himself out there and he’s unhappy that he didn’t get more goals and assists.

I wouldn’t have wanted to be a defender playing against them when they keep on running like this.

The United boss also reserved praise for James, who produced one of his best displays of the season.

Solskjaer said:

He’s had a great impact both on and off the pitch, behind the scenes and on the training field. His attitude, the way he looks after himself and the way he is humble, does his work, and when he’s on the pitch he produces. He’s had a great impact and let’s hope he continues.

While James did spurn a great chance carved out by Rashford late on, his move to the right flank following Martial’s return does mean that his goal threat is perhaps minimal, given that he is unable to cut in and shoot on his favoured right foot.

That was, indeed, his only goal attempt of the match and his first shot in the box since Gameweek 8.

Pereira, starting his ninth league game in a row, and the ever-present Scott McTominay (£5.1m) furthered their budget ‘fifth midfielder’ appeal with attacking returns, although Pereira did have a considerable deflection off Dale Stephens (£4.5m) to thank in order to break his duck for the campaign.

McTominay has posed an aerial threat at set plays all season and it was the Scotland international who claimed the assist for Propper’s own-goal on 18 minutes; that was his fourth attacking return of 2019/20 and he is returning more points per million spent (9.2) than any other FPL midfielder at present.

McTominay picked up an injury in the second half, with his manager later saying:

He rolled over on his ankle so it looked sore. I’m not a doctor, but it looked like a painful one.

There was to again be no clean sheet for the Red Devils, with their barren run now stretching back seven games – only three other sides are without a shut-out in that time.

With Ashley Young suspended and Luke Shaw (both £5.4m) injured, there was a first league start for budget FPL option Brandon Williams (£4.0m) at left-back.

Performing ably in defence and almost grabbing a goal late on, Williams’ display certainly caught the eye – although both of his positional rivals will likely be back after the international break and it remains to be seen if he can offer FPL managers yet another budget defensive option in this season of bargain-bin gems at the back.

Solskjaer said of Williams:

He was excellent. He could’ve had a goal, he could’ve had an assist, and he defended fantastically. I’m very pleased for the boy, he’s had a great month.

He’s done nothing wrong since he’s come in and making it hard for me, definitely. He’s really, really impressed me, I have to say. He’s making it hard to leave him out.

While United assets may be tempting Fantasy managers in the coming weeks and months, interest in Brighton players is probably likely to remain cool for now.

The Seagulls are bottom of our Season Ticker over the next three Gameweeks, with the visit of Leicester City preceding trips to Liverpool and Arsenal.

Albion were very much second-best at Old Trafford, with Leandro Trossard (£5.8m) having little joy on his first start since August and being withdrawn just before the hour-mark.

Neal Maupay (£6.1m) was inches away from connecting with a Pascal Gross (£6.4m) knock-down but the former Brentford striker was otherwise starved of service and failed to touch the ball once in the United box, which summed up the visitors’ lack of threat from open play.

A Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) header from a Gross corner halved the deficit at 2-1 but Albion were well-beaten in the end – no shame, of course, given the respective costs of each squad.

Graham Potter said after full-time:

We’re disappointed; Manchester United were the better team and I suppose the only crumb of comfort we have is that we got our goal to make it 2-1, and if we had kept it like that a bit longer, maybe we could have snatched something.

But we weren’t good enough to stay in the game, and overall I don’t think we deserved anything. We will get better for the experience and move on.

It’s a bit of lesson for us playing against that type of quality. We had a decent group of matches before this one, so we’ll have to dust ourselves down now and be ready for the next match against Leicester.

With Adam Webster (£4.4m) already sidelined because of an ankle injury, Brighton have lost another centre-half ahead of Gameweek 13 as Dunk collected his fifth yellow card of the season at Old Trafford.

That will be welcome news to owners of Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) and co, with the Foxes visiting the Amex straight after the November international break.

The fact that Ryan was kept very busy at Old Trafford – the Australian walked away with maximum bonus after making nine saves – will also encourage those who own Leicester’s attacking assets.

Albion may also have concerns over striker Aaron Connolly (£4.7m), who was hooked at half-time after complaining of groin pain and who has since withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland national squad.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Williams (Rojo 90′); Fred, McTominay; James, Pereira (Lingard 70′), Rashford (Greenwood 90′); Martial.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-4-2): Ryan; Montoya (March 46′), Dunk, Duffy, Burn; Alzate, Propper, Stephens, Trossard (Gross 59′); Maupay, Connolly (Murray 46′).

Bit of help here please guys with my 2 FTs:

    A) Sterling & Pukki to Vardy and Maddy (or up to 9.1m)
    B) Keep Sterling for the next game and just do Pukki to someone else at 6.7m (Ings maybe?)

I'm leaning towards A, but scared of what Sterling can do. My front 8 are currently: Sterling, KDB, Martial, Salah, Pukki, Jimmi, Tammy (donkers)

    Cheers!

I am scared of not owning Sterling (see above) as I think he will be fired up and both Aguero and Jesus not cutting it for Pep and he needs a switch up.

Depends who you are more afraid of not owning, Sterling or Vardy.

Maybe Salah > Mane if injuries are true

Anyone at all follow fantasy NFL?

I have been offered Derrick Henry (and an OK QB who I need, if only for a week) for Saquon Barkley and I'm tempted. Saquon was my #1 pick overall though so it looks on paper like a bad deal, but he has had injury and form issues and Henry has been very good. Cheers!

Yank here. Saquon should benefit from having a bye week this week, although the high ankle sprain is a SOB for a running back to return from. In my opinion if you only need the QB offered in the trade for one week, I would hunt the waiver wire for a QB playing low end defense and stick with Barkley. Henry played one of the worst defenses in the NFL last week with some tough games on schedule for the rest of the season.

Consider getting a better deal for Saquon elsewhere through a different trade - he's been poor and injured.

I'm a Henry owner and a Chiefs fan so mixed feelings this week!

With the inexorable rise of John "Lord" Lundstram reaching 4.9 last night, I think it's worth questioning what you would actually pay for him.

Non-owners surely still need to get him in ahead of the schedule up to week 20, but at what price does he stop being worth the price, especially with more traditionally strong options now cheaper than him?

I agree. At the moment he looks a no brainer. But if he becomes a 6m defender and you're keen on a trent robbo double up, a lot of people would question how much you're spending in defence.

I also just wonder if one coach will work out a scheme to beat Sheffield and everyone who can will adopt it. The other question for me is at what stage of (hypothetical) Sheffield United regression would people sell.

Next season he'll be classified as a midfielder and won't get 4 points per clean sheet.
If he had been classified as a midfielder this season, he would be on 56 points from 12 games (4.7 points per game), assuming that his bonus points remained the same, nearly as much as Tielemans and Mount, and therefore worth about 6.0-6.5m.

This season, however, he is classified as a defender and has scored 70 points at 5.8 points per game, which is slightly better than Maddison, Dilva and Martial. That makes him worth about 7.5m.

            * That makes him worth about 7.0m as a defender, since playing an extra defender instead of a midfielder means having to spend 0.5m on a bench fodder mid than on a bench fodder defender.

But I got him for 4.0m, and at that price he's a season's keeper.
And for anyone who doesn't already own him, why on earth not?

I think it's important to remember that selling price, not buying price is the important number here. Once he hits 6m, you should be comparing him to the 5.0 you can sell him for, not the 4.0 you bought him for.

But why would I want to sell him for only 5.0m when he's performing at a 7.0m level?
And don't forget that if you sell him for 5.0m, then you'll have to pay up to 6.0m when you want to buy him back (which you will).

(Of course, it all changes if he gets a serious injury or completely loses his form. If that happens then I will have to take the money and run, but hopefully it won't).

Hard to see too many options around that price bracket to rival him at this rate.

At 6m though, if you still have a few 4.2-4.5s knocking about, and then players like soyuncu and tomori at just under 5, I wonder if we'd start dropping Liverpool defenders.

If you're playing him most weeks, worth the price. (I certainly am)

If you're still treating him as 2nd/3rd bench, probably good to cash in after 20.

For me, playing him most weeks means I'm either playing four or sometimes five at the back. I wonder if he is having this effect on others.

Traditionally managers like maximum attacking options but defence offers so much value right now.

Benchers are now starting to look a little silly.

I was all set for 2x Pool defenders and one other rotating in a 352. However I've got Lundstram and Soyuncu who I can realistically play for at least the next 5 weeks. Plus I want to capitalise on the Palace fixture shift by bringing in PvA.

I'm now going to shift to 442 with Salah & Mane as my 2nd and 3rd Liverpool players, with Grealish as my 5th midfielder.

If he got up past 6.0ish, swapping to Stevens or O'Connell would yield a profit, which could be tempting.
I think Stevens in particular has the potential for a couple of double-digits to keep pace with Lundstram.

He's got 70 points so far this season.

Pool defs with lots less returns like Robertson/TAA (57/52 points) are bought in massively for 7.0 and 7.2, so why is Lundy less worth?

At the moment he's obviously been worth more, I suppose people are speculating that Liverpool will go on to keep more clean sheets. The number of people who still bench him is indicative of a limited trust, even now.

Crudely extrapolating his backward looking points scoring rate and assuming he plays the next 26 games he finishes the season on 221 points

If we assumed he only scored points at 50% of his backward looking rate for the next 26 GW's, he still finishes on 146 points

Splitting the difference he lands on 183 points

To be honest, 76 points is probably decent for a 4.0 (2 points per week, every week, for 38 weeks)

        145 points is madness
        183 points is insanity
        221 points is....

You get the picture - I'd say a defender who scores 180-220 points is in the 8.0 ball park so he's probably a full 3.5-4.0 underpriced in his current position

The optimal dead team squad for last season did contain all 3 Liverpool defenders (Robertson, VVD and TAA).
The 4th defender in the 4-4-2 formation was LaPorte.

            This season is different though.
Liverpool are no longer getting the clean sheets.

Yet Robbo has 3 points less than Mane over the last 7 gameweeks, and TAA is alongside him at the top of the charts...

Despite their GK missing the first 8 fixtures, and despite only keeping 2 CS’s in their first 12

I’d conservatively put Liverpool on 14-16 CS by end of season now that Allison is back & their fixtures are improving - should boost TAA & Robbo through the FPL stratosphere once again

                Last 5 GWs: Mane 38, Robertson 26, TAA 15
                Last 7 GWs: Mane 43, Robertson 40, TAA 28
                Last 8 GWs: Mane 58, Robertson 45, TAA 30.

The last 7 GWs is just a misleading arbitrary period that you chose to suit your argument.

After blanking in the first 3 GWs, Robertson has scored 51 points in the last 9 GWs, which makes him an excellent pick. Thanks for bringing his recent excellent current form to my attention.
Mane has however outscored him by 66 points to 51 over those 9 GWs and by 38 to 26 over the last 5, and is another excellent pick.

Mane and Robertson are the best two Liverpool picks based on the season so far.
There is little point in trying to compare them against each other - just get them both!

TAA is not yet alongside Robbo at the top of the charts.
Based on this season so far, he is actually alongside Soyuncu but well behind Lundstram, Robertson and Chilwell, and would be quite expensive for a fourth defender.
With Allison back, Matip returning soon and some easier fixtures to come though, he could still be a decent option if you can afford him without having to make too many sacrifices elsewhere.

Three Liverpool actually floats my FPL boat more than two Liverpool would you believe, and of that three, the two fullbacks are actually my preference over the two 12.0’s - but then again, as per Vandijkstowatchoutsfor’s point above, I do hold the opinion that TAA & Robbo are absolute dream FPL players and I’m definitely an advocate of going in heavy on liverpool’s defence

Funnily enough, I’ve actually seen TAA called a “nostalgia pick” elsewhere (can’t for the life of me remember exactly where 😉 ) and also that FFS Members who pursue 3 Liverpool players are mere “sheep” but I’d obviously totally disagree with those opinions personally... if they are still held 😉

The fact that TAA is only 5 points behind Robbo, who himself is so effective speaks volumes about TAA’s ability - he’s an outrageously dangerous FPL asset with hugely positive forward-looking potential

Having the two fullbacks and one 12.0 from Liverpool also has the nice advantage of not having to make significant (imvho) sacrifices elsewhere - allowing an extremely broad representation from the range of in form, undervalued, midprice attackers that are performing so well

My team for example currently has KDB, Martial, Maddison, Mount, Vardy and Abraham supporting Salah - with Lundstram and Chilwell providing the all important defensive representation from Leicester and Sheff Utd and the likes of Rico and Connolly are still there to provide bench strength...

So whilst having TAA and Robbo does force me to make sacrifices (i.e. I can’t get one of Aguero, Auba, Kane, Sterling or Mané to partner Salah, unless Salah is injured in which case I have the easiest of easy swaps)... its a sacrifice I’m totally comfortable with due to the sheer volume of superb value attackers and cheap defensive options from Sheff Utd, Leicester etc. that are out there

But perhaps most interesting of all is that the Liverpool fullbacks have still climbed the scoring charts despite the statistically freakish environment they’ve had to operate within season to date...

I actually spent time correlating some stats on this to share with the community the other day - Goals Conceded, XGC’s and Cleansheets kept amongst the top defensive teams in the league - compared and contrasted with Liverpool, and highlighting just how much of a ‘statistical-outlier’ type situation we currently seem to be in with them - which really would have came in handy or potentially been of interest to some fellow members as we all, each of us, have to look ahead, into our own individual crystal balls, to try and anticipate...

(Anticipation or forecasting is obviously always an exercise fraught with danger, and lacking in guarantees, but equally it’s one we FPL managers all have to embrace at some point or other)

But alas, like the fabled Lost City Of Atlantis, the analysis seems to have gone missing, erased from the history books, never to be seen again... tragic really... there must have been some sort of excursion or incident internally...

I will try and dig the stats out again to share though, as it would be a shame for the work to be lost, and I’m sure some of the community may even get benefit or food for thought from the analysis - after all, that’s ultimately why we were all here in the first place - it’s certainly heartening to see that good old ‘free speech’ is still alive and well 😉

That's fairly simple to explain; Ali was out for 7 epl games, and that really shook the team, as he's probably the next most important after VVD.

We've conceded exactly 1 in each game since his return, with three of those games against ManU ManC and Spurs.

With the favourable run of fixtures forthcoming, I'd expect cleanies to resume.

I hope the clean sheets will return, and they probably will.
But unless you're rolling in cash, Liverpool will need plenty of them in order to justify a Liverpool defensive double up rather than spending the money on better mids or forwards.

No.7/8 classified as a defender; surely clear value up to 5.5m, with a bit more thought required between 5.5 and 6.0, and less enticing above 6.1.

That'd be my take on it.

        I'd certainly pay 5.5m. Maybe even 6m

Once you're into the 6.5m mark, he's competing with the likes of Tielemans and Mount, then you might think twice.

It does seem useful to compare to mids but I think it's important to look at cost (ie spend over minimum) rather than price. So at 4.9 you're paying 0.9 over 4.0 minimum in defence, and that's akin to 5.4 in midfield.

The best you can get for 5.4m in midfield is McTominay or Traore, who are both averaging 3.9 points per game.
Lundstram's 5.8 points per game is far far better than that.

The move was part of three transfers total. Ditched Digne and bought Lundstram.

This GW, leaning towards Sterling to Mane but can see that one backfiring.

Ideally, I would do the move in GW14 unless I wasn’t about to get outpriced.

Sterling to mane definitely one I'm looking at. Just want to give sterling more time. I'm also a bit put off by the Liverpool blank coming up and going to triple Liverpool. So it feels like six games of sterling vs five of mane.

He’s now a 5m defender if you buy him fresh. Seems that Sheffield are a) a sturdy defence for clean sheets, and b) an attacking team where Lundstram is heavily involved. Easy - you’d have paid 5.5m for a defender who heads in corners from West Brom or Burnley in the past, you should be happy to pay that again for Lundstram now.

See I'm not sure I'd have taken a 5.5 asset from one of those teams. Bournemouth have been good lately and ake has attacking threat but I'm not going near him.

But I do think at the moment he's worth more than those examples. But for those of us with another 4.8 defender (soy, tomori) and an enthusiasm for Liverpool fullbacks I think the question is there. Especially with cheaper shu options also offering attacking returns.

Amongst active players ownership will reach levels whereby effectively we all have 10 players each week with whom we play, not 11.
For the fun of the game it would be nice to see a few yellow flags from time to time and the occasional red one. That would introduce some interest, otherwise Lundstram is just a set and forget.

any premium attacking defender and Lundstam are way better then any mid below 7.0 and equal to some 7.5s. If you have a mid around the mil mark or less, go 4 at the back instead and just leave them there long term.

Hahah I tried to move away a bit with chilwell and Pulisic, but unfortunately that's the extent to which you can move away from the template for now, not really about originality.

            Not easy to do.
If anyone who has an idea how to play this game at least 10 out of 15 will be the same players. Hence 20 points is worth a quarter million overall placing.
THEY MUST MAKE CHANGES NEXT YEAR.
            No Captaincy: Too much luck
Bench boost and Trip captain: Too much luck.
            Free hit not necessary.
One would see a move to points per million, opening up a whole lot more possibilities.
I like the idea if captaincy stays then it can be changed across the weekend.

Because changing it over the weekend is an improvement? May as well change the 15 too i.e. 2 GKs on different days.

There was a really good podcast from planet FPL talking about VAR.
It really is worth a listen and it echoes my sentiments totally.
I don't care about fair. It has taken the emotion out of the game.
I am 10k kilometres away so I don't get to go to the grounds anymore, but I say this, I would not go when this VAR crap is around.
There must be money being made out of it, otherwise the pundits, who knock everyone, would say it like it is! I hope it is not Skye!

100% agree - the first time I saw fans and players waiting to see if they could celebrate I knew it wasn't for me...They've introduced a system that removes the soul from the game imo.

It's hardly surprising though now the fat cats claws are well and firmly in, ticket allocations at big finals are a disgrace aswell with corporate seats...

Can't see anything changing now though...

If everyone boycotted matches they would change their tune.
I find it amazing Skye have not attacked the system big time; unless profit is being made.

      Current team

      Pope 4.0
      Taa lund Rico soy Boly*
      Raz kdb Mane Martial Nakamba
      Tammy Vardy Mousset

Which option looks better? 1 Ft 0 itb
A Boly to 4.6 defender this gw then raz to Salah next gw
B Save Ft, next Gw Boly+Kdb to Robbo + Pulisic
      C any other moves

        Really liked A until I saw B.
Hard to say - personally I really fancy Salah+Mane.

If you do go A I'd get Jack O'Connell, double Blades defence is appealing

Yeah will do for sure. Strong likelihood it's a bit of a phony injury though - which is a shame cos I love Robbo and don't like when players do that, even in dead-rubber games really. Take it easy/safe during the game, it should be an honour to represent your country, even if they're crap atm like we are 😆

Even with many dead teams by this stage, with 7m + players (is this the biggest the game's ever been? especially at this point?), price rises of some bandwagons seem to be mental so far this season.

Just looking at my own team (there'll be many other players I'm sure), I got Mane not at all that long ago, he's not had massive hauls but has risen 0.6m - Vardy has risen same amount, even quicker after recent performances. KDb ofc with 0.7m rise after being underpriced, Lord Lundstram 0.9 and rising and Chelsea bargains like Mount and Tammy a whopping 0.8 (0.9 pre drop) and 1.0 respectively!

I suppose, more players = more transfers happening. But people who played WC early (I waited too long and lost out a fair bit on some players) / were able to jump on bandwagons quickly must have mental TV...
