How to solve my Hudson-Odoi problem for Gameweek 13

Going into Gameweek 13, it’s finally time for me to solve my Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.8m) problem.

Gameweek 12 did not treat me kindly. I held onto the Chelsea winger on the theory that Mason Mount (£6.8m) was unlikely to be risked and allow his colleague back into the starting line-up.

How wrong I was.

On his return from injury in Gameweek 7, Hudson-Odoi went on a run of four, five and nine points and it seemed like he was destined to be a regular in Frank Lampard’s side.

However, the explosion of Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) in Gameweek 8, and his continuing form has locked the American into the team at the expense of Hudson-Odoi, who offers nothing more than cameos now.

It’s time for him to leave my FPL team.

I have 6.7million to spend on a replacement for Hudson-Odoi and there are a few different appealing options at this price point.

As has been widely reported in recent days, if you sort the Fantasy Football Scout Season Ticker for attacking potential over the next five Gameweeks then Leicester City sit pretty at the top.

I already own Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) and Çaglar Söyüncü but with the fixtures showing a sea of blue for the foreseeable future, it feels sensible to add another of their colleagues to my attacking assets.

James Maddison (£7.5m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.7m) are the two obvious candidates but, of course, they are separated by £0.8m.

Generally, I’m not put off by Maddison’s higher price considering that he can fall back on free-kicks and corners although right now I can’t afford him.

There are some looking at saving another £0.8m by undercutting Tielemans with his colleague Harvey Barnes (£5.9m), who has offered some potential of late but at this stage, I’d be more confident of the Belgian starting regularly.

However, I admit that sometimes it can be easy to get your blinkers on in FPL, especially when much of the community are talking about one team, such as Leicester.

So I decided to expand the Season Ticker by three more Gameweeks (to the end of 2019) to see if there was any club or player that I had previously overlooked.

Seeing Crystal Palace sitting top of the pile was a surprise and, not surprisinfly, I haven’t really considered owning any attacking of their assets so far this season.

However, after this weekends match against Livepool there is a dramatic improvement in the Palace fixtures and therefore this should hopefully result in a change of fortune for their players as FPL assets.

Both Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m) and Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) are both an affordable price and have shown in the past that they can be viable assets.

That said, neither are hugely appealing based on their form so far this season, although we all know what Milivojevic can offer in the way of penalties.

With Zaha, we could see him start to show some potential as we creep ever close to the January transfer window. He has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park for some time now and maybe he might try and put himself ‘in the shop window’, so to speak, over the Christmas period.

However, that’s still not enough of a guarantee to justify bringing him in and with Liverpool coming to south London in Gameweek 13, it does feel like the wrong time to sign Palace players. I will, however, be monitoring the Eagles carefully as if we see an improvement then they could prove to be amazing differential picks.

Another team that has an appealing run between now and the start of 2020 is Manchester United. Like Palace, they have been very hit and miss so far this season but the return of Marcus Rashford (£8.6m) and Anthony Martial (£7.8m) to form has made a huge difference.

That said, within my budget of £6.7m, it’s really only Daniel James (£6.2m) or the currently flagged Scott McTominay (£5.1m) that are realistic options for me. The problem is, the way that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are playing right now, I think you have to invest in one of Rashford or Martial or just not at all – the alternatives don’t quite cut it.

With two free transfers, I could downgrade Harry Kane (£10.8m) to Raúl Jiménez (£7.3m) and get some extra cash in which to spend on Martial. This was something I was strongly considering until news of Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs was confirmed on Wednesday morning. Now I want to wait and see if new manager bounce happens because Kane himself could turn into a differential if he finds FPL form again. For now, Martial will have to remain on the list of players I want but can’t quite get to just yet.

After considering all the options, Tielemans seems the best replacement for Hudson-Odoi that I can get to in one transfer so I’ll be getting him in ahead of Leicester’s trip to Gameweek 13.

The epitome of a player Jose does not like. He expects a high work rate from forward playing mids.

Due to the post above, what can we expect from Spurs assets with Jose in charge.
I personally expect a tighter ship so defenders stock will rise. Gazza as a keeper could be a real bargain.
Will Kane start playing CF again?
Will Son play No 10 or out wide?
Do we hold onto an extra tfr to choose a Spurs route after the weekend?

I think Tom made a great point about Mourinho's love of a #10 and how that might re-ignite Alli

I always think of Mourinho's original Chelsea side and the way he had Robben/Duff/Drogba scoring huge & assisting amounts of goals

Son is a fairly good proxy for the Robben/Duff roles, and Kane obviously isn't a Million miles away from Drogba so he has the raw materials there to form a fairly potent attacking unit

That was a long time ago though so interested to see just how much defensive work he assigns Son with (I wonder whether Son will become one of Mou's all time favourite players His work rate & energy are off the charts which are basic cost of entry requirements for Mourinho... He has lighnting pace and is a superb finisher into the bargain - I'd imagine Mourinho will love having him in the team...Remains to be seen exactly what it does to his FPL output... but it has been modest for 9 of his 10 GW’s so it’s not as if Son is in ho form anyways)

How does he get those fullback slots shored up though? Rose/KWP/Aurier aren't exactly great defensively... I wonder whether he tries Vert at LB and Sanchez RB, or a back 5 even

Dier strikes me as a Mourinho type player too

Can't wait to see ho this works out, very intruiging

Agree with all you say. Son could play the Hazard role or a hard working no10 that Jose loves.
He likes Physical players too so you wont be far out with full backs. Does Vert still have the pace though?
It will be interesting and this week will determine the Spurs route I take through Xmas. I will probably get Gazza anyway.

You never know with him, he kicked Juan Mata out after consecutive Chelsea POTY awards, he was pretty much the main man there. Think he likes a no.10 but never know who he prefers there. I think he liked Oscar there at Chelsea over Mata, not sure what to gather from that.

Yeah a Mourinho 10 is probably a bit different to a normal 10 in so far as Jose’s loves his players to have a bit of physicality, Mata was never going to tick that box being so small, so light, and so slow - but Alli could be a much better fit, hard to know though, Alli’s been very quiet for almost 2 seasons now

Yes, but if you see his comments on Ozil its completely different. He bought Ozil for RM and played him every week, had an amazing relationship with him and speaks well about him till date. And Ozil is not only small, light and slow but also visibly lethargic. Thats why its hard to know what he wants exactly.

I always remember reading about the time mourinho laid into Ozil so much during a half time team talk in Madrid he left him in tears! I must try and dig up that article... Mou did play Máta quite a lot at utd as well compared to Chelsea but possibly more out of necessity in terms of what squad he had at his disposal rather than by choice

Alli definitely had that nice combination of physicality and finesse that say Lampard, Oscar etc had as previous moumou mids, but need to see how spurs start lining up to get some clarity

I see. Personally dont like betting on 1 week punts thanks to kane last season. 2 good consecutive weeks maybe.

I'm a Utd fan and martial has at least 8-10 goals in him left. Cant say the same about mount, richarlison. Son yes but martial is cheaper.

For me, martial fits my 2 conditions above.

Fellow Mount owners - what’s your thinking?

Despite value tied up meaning I’d pay extra to get him back in future, he’s nearing the “last chance” category in my team - options like Pulisic/Martial/Son performing better recently in terms of output. Should that continue, will you sell? Or keep faith

    1. Karan14
      • 8 Years

He's on borrowed time for me. Considering a switch to Pulisic/Martial next week depending on if I have any other urgent moves to make.

      1. Eze Really?

I think the same but the injury to Pulisic is a concern atm.

Don't mind keeping Mount for longer if I have to though. Fixtures look good and he's still the most nailed on out of the attacking mids for Chelsea.

Many options in place of Mount. Since I already have Pulisic as well, I'm looking at Martial, Moura or Son.

He will be the first out from all my mids (mane kdb maddi martial) to bring in son/moura depending on how MOU sets up. Happy to keep him, always in the 11 and sometimes on set pieces

Injury concerns are causing some brain cells into overdrive.

    1. Robertson
    2. Pulisic
    3. Connolly

    My team, 1ft, 0.7itb

    Pope
    Raa rob lund
    Mane kdb mount madd pul
    Abraham vardy

    Subs, Connolly, rico, chambers

Pulisic even if fit doesn't give me confidence against city. He is skilful but physically weak and I think city can chip away at that.

I am tempted to put chambers as first sub. I can see wolves scoring against.Bournemouth. hopefully arsenal can keep a clean sheet against Southampton, if they cant...at home, then things are the worst they have ever been.

The census would be to roll the tf unless anyone has some interesting ideas?

        Get your point
I think over the next 5, 3 liverpool players seem essential.
