Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captains for Gameweek 14?

Leicester and Liverpool options go head-to-head for the captaincy this weekend.

They both face favourable home fixtures in Gameweek 14 as Everton and Brighton come to the King Power Stadium and Anfield respectively.

To help you make the tough decision we’ve got another edition of Captain Sensible.

As ever, we’ll go through the underlying statistics for each of the candidates and compare them against the defensive data of their upcoming opponents.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

For the third Gameweek in a row, Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) is the most popular captain option.

Ahead of a home meeting with Everton, 29.9% of the voters have leant their backing to the Leicester City forward.

It’s not hard to understand why. Over the last five Gameweeks, Vardy has been remarkably reliable, scoring seven times during that period.

Furthermore, since Gameweek 4, he has registered just one blank at the King Power Stadium, registering 9.6 points per game there between then and now.

Meanwhile, Everton are without a clean sheet away from home since Gameweek 1 and are potentially about to lose manager Marco Silva to the sack.

Not far behind Vardy in the poll is Sadio Mané (£12.2m), who has a 24.8% share of the votes as of Thursday lunch-time.

The Liverpool man and his colleagues will host a travel-sick Brighton side on Saturday afternoon, who have conceded an average of 2.3 goals per game in their last three away matches.

Meanwhile, Mané himself is on an encouraging run of form at Anfield. He has registered an attacking return there for the last four Premier League matches in a row and you have to go back to Gameweek 3 for the last time he blanked in Merseyside this season.

A long way off in third place is Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), backed by just 6.6% of the voters in the poll.

Arguably, the Manchester City man was unfortunate not to get his eighth league goal of the campaign against Chelsea after a controversial VAR call, and there are clearly some Fantasy managers left who believe he has more to deliver.

This week it’s a trip to Newcastle which is perhaps cause for patience. The Magpies have conceded at least twice in three of their last four matches although they have been much harder to beat at home.

In front of their own fans, only Leicester (three) have conceded fewer goals than Newcastle this season (four).

Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) is currently fourth in the poll with a 6.1% share of the vote.

After 90 minutes midweek, there is certainly less concern about his ankle problems and, like Mané, he gets to face a defence that tends to be quite obliging away from home.

The Egyptian himself has scored in all but one of Liverpool’s home matches in the Premier League this season.

The 5.8% of managers who backed Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) in the captain poll will be hoping for good news from Frank Lampard in his Friday press conference after he sustained a knock to the hip in the Champions League.

If he does start against West Ham then he could have an enjoyable Saturday afternoon. The Hammers have been very poor defensively recently, conceding three goals in each of their last three matches.

As Fantasy managers continue to get positive vibes from Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs, Harry Kane (£10.8m) and Son Heung-min (£9.7m) are naturally attracting some support for the captaincy.

They have been backed by 4% and 3.9% respectively for the visit of Bournemouth to north London.

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) who has more points than any other Chelsea player since Gameweek 10, has been garnered the support of 3.2% for that meeting with West Ham.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), Benjamin Mendy (£5.8m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) are the only other options with more than a 1% share.

Having a tough time deciding whether to captain Vardy or Mane. Had it on Mane all week but this article's got me thinking. Hmmm

Don't overthink it. Go for the player who's scored most over recent gameweeks and has highest captaincy

Depends whether your intention is to sure up your team with more reliable returns or take another punt

Consider how thin city points get spread, consider that they do score fewer goals (under two averaged) against 'bigger' teams than fodder (almost 4).

I'm not keen on the 9.5 'for a city striker is a bargain' way of framing it. Remember that city basically have about 5 attackers

    Advice from Christina
Floundering around 100k to 200k. Like everyone I am trying to get a move on my opponents. Cannot move totally away from template; there is a reason players are template.
I am aware of some of the risks (injury, rotation, form) etc.
Tell me where this can fail. No Abraham is an obvious risk. You won't hurt anyone saying this is a crap idea.
    Guita Button
Robbo Lund Aurier Taylor Soy (Cover for Xmas not too expensive)
Mane KDB Pulisic Teilemans Zaha (Zaha form and Pulisic rotation)
Vardy Jesus Ings (No Tammy but I was starting to doubt him)

    What must i change here?

    1. Pacer.
      • 9 Years

I just can't get on board with zaha. I don't really recall him ever doing anything more than just about enough to justify not getting rid of. Never seems to get much in the way of bps.

I loved owning him in 16/17I think he was, got an assist every game for like 5 weeks and then got 16 points for about 6 mil

The 1st decent game he played was against Pool. It is a punt to be honest with great fixtures. If he plays to his potential, he will be gold. otherwise a nightmare if he carries on as usual.

    2. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

How much itb? I don't like benching one of Tielemans and Ings every week, and would want to own Son. Aurier won't keep clean sheets for a while either.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

Zero but Mousset instead of Ings was my move until the injury and i would have 1.1 itb Aurier, as crap as he is gets FPL points. I went for Pulisic rather than Son for money reasons. I am not moving KDB cause he kills me each time i do. with Tiel and ings i would Hazard a guess 80% og GW's will have a rotation scenario.

Defense Double up good but limited when they can be played. Lund Tomori TAA and Robbo can interfere with the though process.

Taa Lundy Tomori -- RIco Lascelles
Sterling Kdb Martial Mount -- Cantwell
    Vardy Tammy Rashy

A: Lascelles >> Kelly and carry over FT
    B: Sterling + Lascelles >> Mane + Kelly
    C: Sterling + Tammy >> Mane + Jimmy
    D: Sterling + Lascelles >> Son + Robbo with Tomori 1st sub

C makes the most sense if Tammy is ruled out for 2 gameweeks.

B and D is tough to call if Tammy is only out for 1 gw

If Abraham is injured for two or more weeks then it is probably worth getting rid.

A two week injury would probably mean he misses at least 3 PL games and probably 4.

Got so much value tied up in him though, could make buying back quite annoying

Same. But he is a starting player for me so would rather get rid and buy someone else (Rashford, Ings, Jimenez etc.) who will play. The points I get will more than make up for the loss of value.

I have a solid bench so tempted to let it ride me through. Both valid though

Definitely get rid if hes out for even 7-10 days.

He'll probably play, wasn't it only a knock that turned out not to be that hard already after short time?

If he’s out for two weeks that’s potentially 4 games so would def sell no question

    Ryan
    TAA / Soy / Lund
    Mane / Mount* / Maddi / KDB
    Tammy* / Vardy / Kane

Tammy to Jiminez and Mount to Pulisic?
Worth a -4 if Tammy is unfit?

RMWCT: Double leicester defence, double spurs mids. Anything you would change?

    Henderson
    Trent / Periera / Chilwell
    Mane / Son / Moura / Pulisic
    Vardy / Ings / Rashford

    (4.0 / Lundstram / Taylor / Hayden)

I like this non template team....no City is a short term plan but I like it....benching lord lund most weeks will make me lose sleep but I guess Ings can rotate well.

I have hendo to cover for Lund's clean sheets, and i will play Lundstram in juicy home fixtures (probably at ings expense)

Great, love it. Also really nice to see some hasn't fallen into the trap of thinking Lundstram is a first 11 player. He simply isn't. Granted he has great fixtures and will be for several games, but otherwise when playing good teams away or great teams at home he is fodder

Thanks, Sheffield Utds clean sheets have been very predictable this season, so im happy to bench him when ings has good fixtures

He’s the top scoring defender in the game how is he not a first 11 player? Is it because he started as a 4.0 def?

Hard to believe the captaincy poll is so close. Norwich beat Everton 2-0 away last week...

Everton love getting tonked by minnows though, which Leicester aren't.

I genuinely think we could be looking at 4 or 5 nil.

True, but Liverpool could score 4 or 5 too. Seems like a close call for good reasons, everybody will be a winner!

Yes, Liv at home to Brighton could produce a similar result except Liverpool haven't looked right recently.
