Why the stats are becoming hard to ignore in the Pulisic v Mount debate

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy looks ahead to Gameweek 15 in his latest Pro Pundits piece

I don’t like making late changes to my team – at that point, it all feels a bit rushed. Despite this I still found myself on Saturday morning chopping and changing between Jamie Vardy (£9.9m) and Sadio Mané (£12.2m) for captaincy, only to pick the wrong one.

It turned out to be a fairly average week, scoring 51 and seeing a 4,321 red arrow, down to 510,594.

Looking ahead to Gameweek 15 and I’m in that weird situation where I could transfer out one of three players or just make no transfer at all.

Nick Pope (£4.7m) has a bit of a fixture swing from this Gameweek, and not in a good way. Looking at the Season Ticker in the Members Area right up until Gameweek 30 (which is when I’ll start looking at using the second Wildcard), Burnley are second bottom in terms of fixture difficulty for defence.

I’m still reluctant to use a transfer on a goalkeeper however. The ceiling for points is fairly low and at just £4.7m he’s scored 55 points total, only five points behind current leaders Mathew Ryan (£4.8m) and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.3m). With the fixtures getting more difficult I would hope for an increase in save points to combat the likelihood of less clean sheets as well.

Mason Mount (£6.6m) is another player I’m looking at giving the boot to. He has just one assist to his name in the last six Gameweeks. There is a part of me that wants to give him the Aston Villa game, but that would definitely be the last-chance saloon.

If you compare Mount to Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) over the last six Gameweeks, there really is no competition: Pulisic has created more chances, registered more big chances and recorded more shots inside the box over the same period.

Despite all of this, it’s John Lundstram (£5.0m) that I’m looking to bring in (yes that’s correct, I still don’t own him).

It will be Harry Maguire (£5.3m) leaving my team to accommodate Lundstram. I have thought about keeping him, given that he’s nailed and has good goal threat, and instead transfer out Issa Diop (£4.5m), but that leaves a lot of money spread out over my defence, and would mean I don’t have enough flexibility for future transfers.

It’s been difficult to ignore Lundstram, and that is made even worse by their upcoming fixture run that includes Newcastle United, Norwich, Aston Villa, Brighton and Watford. Couple that with his 45.5% ownership and it’s hard to go any longer without him given the potential for clean sheets and attacking returns: he’s 12th for expected goals (xG) from open play in the last six Gameweeks for example.

As much as the fixtures look good for my team this week, I want to be more aggressive with my transfers in an attempt to get ahead of the curve. Lundstram doesn’t do that but he does provide a comfort blanket. That being said, after writing this article and looking at the stats for Pulisic, it’s difficult to ignore him with Villa up next. Maybe I’ll take my fourth hit in as many Gameweeks and just get it over with…

As for captaincy, that’s easy. I can’t look past Vardy at the moment and even though I bought Mané in under the guise of handing him the armband between Gameweeks 14-17, I think it’ll be the Englishman who becomes permanent captain now, at least for the next three weeks.

Speaking of Pulisic, if you had the money for both would you go for Pulisic or Zaha?

Zaha is definitely very popular right now, especially with Palace fixture turn but is Pulisic being a look overlooked? Incredible stats as in the article above.

Both good. I did transfer before the price drop. goal scoring odds significantly higher, so went with pulisic

Pulisic over Zaha. Raw quality trumps fixtures. And Pulisic's stats are phenomenal.

I would go with Zaha out of the two. With CHO coming back there's just too many mouths to feed in that Chelsea midfield for my liking and Zaha's fixtures are well nicr for an eternity...

      Considerations:

      1. Pulisic is definitely a good option, and definitely better than Mount, but he falls into a specific price bracket. I for one don't have money to do the upgrade without taking a hit, which doesn't feel worth it. If I had 1m ITB, I'd do it. If I had 2m ITB however, I'd be inclined to go for Alli instead.

      2. Pulisic has been playing a lot of games recently and could be in line for a rest.

      3. Pulisic has seen 4 price rises and is found in so many RMTs that it's difficult to argue he's being overlooked. In fact, I'd question if he has peaked (for the time being) already.

Question is, do you go for the straight forward

    A. Mount to Pulisic

Or try to take a punt and do

    B. Mount to Zaha instead

For me, if the question was only Mount vs. Pulisic, I'd take Puli hands down.

However, I (a) have Mount and (b) don't have the cash, at least not with only one transfer, for Pulisic.

So my question is: what can we expect regarding minutes when it comes to Mount?

    1. sirmorbach
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 3 months ago

      To make it clearer:

      Pope / 4.0
TAA, Chilwell, Lundstram / Kelly, Rico
Salah, Sterling, Mount, Tielemans / Traore
      Vardy, Abraham, Jiménez

      A. Hold
      B. Mount, Tielemans out / McGinn, Pulisic in (- 4)
      C. Mount, Sterling out / KDB, Pulisic in (- 4)
      D. Mount out, Zaha in

I still think Pulisic is more at risk and can see him rested/Rotated. I am looking at Alli, after he's shown great stats and the comments made by Mourinho. They also have good fixtures.

A few tougher fixtures coming up like Spurs and Wolves (maybe a reason not to go either of them)!.#

We could see the Kovacic, Jorginho, and Kante midfield 3 deployed a few more times.

I'm in a similar spot to Andy this week.

I could either take a hit and make some 'proactive' transfers. Or I could just save the transfer and trust my initial judgments. Having Pope going forward sucks but how important is it to do a GK transfer when I have a WC in my pocket which I'll be using in the next 4 weeks?

I think it might be best to just hold, hope for save points and then move him on when the WC comes out.

Yeah I've had Lundstram since GW 1. Sorry about the hack which certainly has derailed you a lot this season.

I'd do Maguire > Lundstram this week if I were you.

Holding Mount for Villa seems okay but a bit boring! I'm tempted to just take the hit and get Pulisic and Lundstram.

I can still afford Maddison to Alli down the line, or could use KDB.

Or I can just get Alli instead of Pulisic! So many options

Burnley are quite good at parking it up and dogging out a 0-0 away to the top sides though..

Fixtures are poor yes but he'll rack up save points and a cleanie here and there. Clean sheets seem to be non existent this season for most teams anyway..

      Nice moves

I am considering some moves over the next couple (see below) that would give me a front 8 of:

    Which team is best?

    A:
    Pope
    LunD | TAA | Chilwell |
    Mane | Alli | KDB | Grealish
    Tammy | Rash | Vardy

    Kelly | Den D | Rico

    or

    B:

    Pope
    LunD | TAA | Chilwell
    Mane | Maddison | KDB | Mount
Jimenez | Rash | Vardy ---- either Rash or Jime out when Tammy is back

    Kelly | Dunk | DenD

RP on new article - sorry I know it's long but appreciate opinions 🙂

    Afternoon all

After using my FT over the weekend, I am planning to hold on further moves this GW.
I'm not usually one to plan moves looking weeks ahead but I was just playing around and have seen I could do these moves over the next 2-3 weeks at a cost of -4 / -8:

    Pope > Guaita
    Rico > Aurier
    Mount > Pulisic
    Dendo > Zaha / Grealish

This would give me the following team with £2.3m itb and flexibility to bring in MCI and potentially to just bench my LIV assets in GW18 for the blank:

    2.3itb
    Guaita, McGovern
    TAA, Soy, Lunds, Willems, Aurier
Mané, Alli, Maddison, Pulisic, Zaha/ Grealish
    Vardy, Jimi, Ings

Keen to get your thoughts? Looking at the moves, they are all upgrades and should pay back any hits within a couple of weeks.

    Thanks

Alternative as mentioned below is to keep Rico and bring in KDB for Maddison

Not a fan of no MCI players, especially KDB as I see him as essential

Apart from that like the moves

I could forget Rico > Aurier and would have enough to do Maddison > KDB?

Sounds like you must have 5 or 6M in the bank at the moment - way too much

Don’t get this “too much” itb business.

It’s because the ultra premiums are not delivering so it’s becoming more common to see lots of cash to play with. I have £6.7itb currently but I have an alternative option to the above to hold Rico and switch Maddison to KDB to use up most of the cash if that is more pleasing 😉

I have 2 fts, 0.5m in the bank and no idea what to do with the following players:

    Sterling

    Abraham

This. Ride Abraham out, especially if you have bench cover, he'll surely be back for the weekend if not midweek. The time to sell if at all was before the weekend.

High chance that will happen or even be the 1st sub off. Don't get the urge people have for him. Chelsea were so poor against West ham & Villa better than West ham defensively. There is only one place I see the Pulisic ship at

Has anyone else noticed Mousset’s amazingly high points per minute?
He has only 500 minutes but over 50 points. So pro rated that’s 9.5 points per 90
I don’t think anyone else has scored at this rate
I have brought him in as a third forward looks a great option

I'm in a pickle. 0.1 off my ideal transfers (includes dropping Robbo). If I drop Trent instead of Robbo, I can afford it.

Am I right in thinking I should prioritise keeping hold of Trent? I feel he'll score more than Robbo from here onwards and I'm slightly about Robbo's ankle.
