Aubameyang banks more FPL returns as Arsenal and West Ham serve up dire game

West Ham United 1-3 Arsenal

  • Goals: Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) | Gabriel Martinelli (£4.5m), Nicolas Pepe (£9.1m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m)
  • Assists: Pablo Fornals (£6.0m)| Sead Kolasinac (£5.2m), Aubameyang, Pepe
  • Bonus: Aubameyang x3, Pepe x2, Martinelli x1

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) registered his third double-digit haul of the season as Freddie Ljungberg oversaw his first win as interim Arsenal manager in a low-quality affair at the London Stadium.

Bar ten minutes of ruthless attacking play from the visitors in the second half, it was difficult to split the teams in terms of sheer awfulness.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side came into this match on a run of one victory in ten league matches, while the Gunners were winless since Gameweek 8.

Only Aubameyang could boast a double-digit ownership among the players on show and the lack of faith in other West Ham and Arsenal assets seems warranted at present, at least while the clubs are in their current stagnant states.

The right managerial appointment at the Emirates could alter that, of course: Spurs assets were hardly en vogue before the arrival of Jose Mourinho and are now much sought-after among the Fantasy community.

Owners of Manchester City players will perhaps be hoping that Stan Kroenke and co can delay any decision on that front, with Pep Guardiola’s troops the visitors to north London in Gameweek 17.

The scoreline masked a dreadful first-half display from the Gunners, with their first shot on target indeed being Gabriel Martinelli‘s (£4.5m) 59th-minute equaliser.

The budget Fantasy Premier League forward, making his first-ever Premier League start on the left flank of a 4-2-3-1, converted a Sead Kolasinac (£5.2m) cut-back to finish a slick Arsenal break and spark a turnaround that had seemed very unlikely in the preceding hour.

Nicolas Pepe (£9.1m) collected an Aubameyang pass to superbly curl home the visitors’ second goal before the Ivory Coast international returned the favour, crossing for his teammate to volley in the Gunners’ third.

Aubameyang, who had earlier carved out Arsenal’s only real chance of the first half for Mesut Ozil (£7.2m), almost added to his tally but saw a goalbound, stoppage-time shot deflect over for a corner.

The Gabon international now has 11 goals for the season and cracked the 100-point FPL barrier with his attacking returns in Gameweek 16, becoming only the fourth player to do so this season.

It is frightening to think of the damage he could do playing in a side that provides him with adequate service and under a manager that regularly plays him in a central role.

Here, at least Ljungberg had the good sense to do the latter after wasting the premium striker on the right flank against Brighton last Thursday.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) was dropped to the bench for the first time since Gameweek 9, with the interim Arsenal head coach fielding Aubameyang in the lone striker’s role ahead of an attacking trident of Martinelli, Ozil and Pepe.

Aubameyang had only four more touches of the ball than 86th-minute substitute Matteo Guendouzi (£4.5m) but, a bit like Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), he is one of of a handful of FPL assets who tend to make the most of their opportunities.

Owners of the Gabonese striker, along with the rest of us, will be watching keenly in the days ahead to see who the Arsenal board plump for as Unai Emery’s permanent replacement.

Pepe has been slow to get to grips with English football and his first double-digit haul of the season likely won’t be enough to prompt a wave of transfer activity, with there being a number of in-form alternatives in the premium/mid-price midfield bracket.

Similarly, we’ll have to wait to see if Martinelli becomes a permanent fixture in the plans of whoever is appointed Arsenal boss before we can get excited about his budget-freeing potential as a third FPL striker.

Where all this leaves Lacazette is another question.

Speaking of his two wingers, Ljungberg said after full-time:

People always ask me about Nico and I try to explain. He comes from the French league, he comes to the Premier League – in my opinion, the best league in the world – and it’s a lot faster and a lot harder. He needs to adapt.

People put pressure on him but that’s not so easy, and I thought what he did today was he worked really hard offensively and defensively and showed his quality.

Gabi is a fantastic player. He’s still very young but he has that energy about him and he goes and he goes. He has no fear and he just keeps on going.

So it’s a pleasure to see him there on that pitch, and for him to get the success that he did today, it gives you a smile to your face.

Arsenal’s defence was as uncertain as ever and they suffered a double injury blow in the full-back department, with Hector Bellerin (£5.4m) withdrawing from the starting XI in the warm-up and Kieran Tierney (£5.4m) exiting the field of play before the game was half an hour old with a shoulder problem.

Ljungberg said after the game:

Tierney, I think it’s something with his shoulder but I don’t know exactly what it is. But obviously we had to take him off so I think he’s going to maybe go to hospital and check what it is.

Hector had a bit of feeling, I think, in his hamstring in the warm-up. Then we took the decision. I said I’m not going to force anyone to play if you don’t feel 100 per cent.

Reflecting on the match overall, the Arsenal boss said:

First half we were slow, we were a bit lethargic, we didn’t move, we didn’t run. But that, in my opinion, comes when players are low and have no confidence. You don’t do it at the speed you need to and it’s been hard on the players, but I felt like we gave it a go in the second half and we did that. It was amazing to see, for me.

And you saw West Ham getting a bit tired and a bit low around the 60th minute and we sliced them open and played some really good football, in my opinion. That’s how we want to play and we were keeping the ball well.

But of course, we don’t get carried away. We have a lot of work to do on things but all credit to the players for how they did in the second half.

The fact that Arsenal emerged as 3-1 winners despite their shortcomings reflected badly on West Ham, who themselves hadn’t done much to merit a one-nil led.

Out-of-position FPL midfielder Michail Antonio (£6.9m) was back in a striker’s role for the Hammers after a precautionary midweek absence and showed glimmers of promise early on, firing over before forcing a save out of Bernd Leno (£5.0m).

The deadlock-breaking goal came out of nowhere, though, with Pablo Fornals (£6.0m) capitalising on Arsenal’s inability to clear a corner and crossing for Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) to power a deflected header past Leno.

The Hammers were just as bad in the second half as Arsenal had been in the first and their defensively suspect display will be of encouragement to owners of Danny Ings (£6.3m) ahead of Southampton’s home match against Pellegrini’s troops this weekend.

As for the Hammers on the whole, they will surely be far from Fantasy managers’ thoughts at present.

On top of their indifferent form, Pellegrini’s side also blank in Gameweek 18 due to Liverpool’s involvement in the Club World Cup.

Pellegrini said after full-time:

If Arsenal create six or seven goals and score three then maybe, fair enough, but they didn’t create much and then in nine minutes decided the game.

We need to be more concentrated and try to finish with more quality when we had the chances like we had tonight.

It is difficult to understand why we made those mistakes or why you are not solid in every ball. I always say that two or three balls decide the score, you can play well but if you are not concentrated in defending then you allow them to score and that’s what happened tonight.

The Hammers also lost a full-back to injury, with Aaron Cresswell (£4.7m) forced off just after half-time.

Budget goalkeeper David Martin (£4.0m), meanwhile, started his third straight game between the posts.

Trying to work out if I should pick a non playing 3rd sub or a starter. Means I can get Guaita

    A. Hendo & Rico
    B. Guaita & Reid

Other subs are kelly and dendocker.

But you did use kelly from bench. TAA could easily have been rested full game too if not for injury.

Aside from the fact that Rico is a good option to play in GW18, I disagree with the above.

I have zero stats to back it up, but I'm dubious of the importance of a third sub, which Rico presumably would be anyway in GWs 17 and 19. If you're happy with Kelly and Doncker, you don't need Rico (GW18 aside - are you set OK for that?)

Tough - But prefer as many starters as possible

Think Hendo is a better pick over next two than Guaita. Personally moving for Guaita in a couple.

Palace don’t shine away at Newcastle historically and Toon are doing very nicely. Home to Brighton could be anything.

      Ramsdale is your man.

Look at Bournemouth's fixtures from 18 onwards. 4.6m. I think Guaita is still too expensive. Might as well pick up any of the 4.5m or cheaper defenders.

Because he's overpriced for what he offers. Schmeichel is only 5.3m. Gazzaniga currently is the best value keeper at 4.5m.

He offers a 40% plus cs record against bottom 13 sides. He started the season as best value keeper on last season’s form and this years prices.

There was an article earlier on this year which showed the average number of times a third sub is needed a season. I think it was a half a dozen times or a few more. But given that most people's playing 3rd subs are pretty poor the average number of points (counted as part of GW score) averaged around 10. Someone can no doubt correct these figures, in fact a link to that article would be really useful at that time of the season.

My takeaway was you definitely need two playing subs and although it's better to have a third than not, it's not essential. Although titles and leagues have been won or lost by less than 10 points.

Imo your best sub should be a defender because they can come in on any formation. 2 good def subs can mean non playing mid or front. But its december and its risky. I am going all playing sub except gk.

My plan is, as always, not to have a plan. Try as I might I just can't do strategy. It's why I'm rubbish at chess and why I will never be properly good at this game, although I'm having a decent season so far. Not sure I will use the WC at all, or even if I do maybe only to make save a -4 or a -8. It's just been one of those seasons so far where I've never felt like I needed more than a -4 to get to a team I'm happy with. I'm sure the strategists will eventually boot me out of the top 100k though

How long will Fernandez be a starter in Newcastle? Is he a safe pick for bench coverage in GW18?

    Opinions on this plan??

Before 18: TAA Hayden to Targett Grealish
    Before 19: Tomori to Aurier
    Before 20: Henderson to Guaita

    False Overall Ranks.

I know for some its hard not to focus on OR at this point (I’ve focused on it too much this season myself tbh) but at the moment it’s a false economy.

Sure there are plenty of players in the top 10k that are solid players likely to stay in and around those places for the majority of the season but the top 10k will still be currently filled with managers who don’t take the game that seriously and will drop off significantly. Or those who’ve used more chips that will perhaps lose some ground once chip usage balances out.

It’s always the same until after Xmas each season. The reason so many do well in the second half of the season is that a lot of people in higher places are “casuals” that have already given up and just have a decent ghost team, or ones that will soon give up. But they usually drop as more time (gameweeks) go by. In my experience OR isn’t really accurate until around February onwards and there is another 8 GW’s to play before we land in February.

So for those with ranks that don’t seem great now, I think you will be surprised what they will look like by February if you have nothing more than just a steady period from now until then. Differentials could work well but I wouldn’t be going too over the top and risky as the OR landscape will change a lot over the next two months.

I was 2 mill plus this time last year and ended up top 100k despite some fairly wild play so defo all to play for.

Gameweek 16 Rough with the Smooth

How did your GW16 go? Were any of your players benched? Did you get any injuries? How did your bench perform? Did your captain return?

Feel free to post your tales of joy and woe from Gameweek 16 here:

      KdB captain !!!!

Still my overpowered front 8 finally bore fruit with Ings off the bench and 59 isn’t too shabby all in all.

Smooth: Vardy perma cap & Ings scoring again. Alli transfer instant impact

      Rough: Martial on my bench.

Not much rough this week. TAA cameo was annoying but most had him anyways.
Pope TAA chilwell and lord combined points of 5 was disappointing.

Rough: Getting knocked out of FFS cup. No LEI clean sheets.

Smooth: This is probably not going to sound like smooth to majority but Aurier(c) scoring 6 pointer was sweet. Occasionally I prefer to make this kind of decisions which helps me escape "peer pressure" phenomenon for next few weeks.

Rough: Despite my new players performing, Kane/Doncker/Boly -> Mousset/Alli/Kelly -4 came out 5 points down.
Smooth: Playing Kelly over Soyuncu, Ings continuing to repay faith

Transfer was Martial – Alli after Ole said Martial probs wouldn’t be able to start. Cheers for that.

Rough – TAA coming on which left Otamendi’s goal on the bench. Blanks for all playing defenders and goalkeepers. KDB looking dangerous but coming away with 1 point.

Smooth – Vardy (c), Salah, Maddison assists.

73 points and a green arrow.

      Smooth:-
      1. mane not playing but martial came on instead..
      2. not using FT for GW 16 so got 2 FT to use in 17
      3. 82 points

      Rough??:-
      1. Not captaining Vardy but instead went for Alli..

Quite confused as to whether or not i had a good or a bad week. I supposed it was just an average one.

Rough/smooth (you decide) transferred out TAA (2) & Maddison (9) to Dunk (0) and Son (12). This alone puts me 1 point up, but I captained Son instead of Mané. Had I captained Mané, Vardy would have been my VC. So have I technically missed out on those extra few points?

Anyway I finished on 57 points, as Mané and Lacazette no shows brought just one point from Rico and Dunk from the bench.

      Rough; Mane & Trent benched.

Smooth; Kelly first sub for Mane, Vardy(c), Alli, Grealish, Jimenez, Robertson.

68 points. Another green arrow and up 3k places to 17k OR. Not sure I’m going to use my wildcard now time is running out.

Smooth: 75pts this gw with Son(C), Party, Rash, Mo finally returning, Kelly to Rico with ft

      SMOOTH

7th green arrow in a row, up from 852k in GW9 to a current overall rank of 27k.

Transfer of KDB to Salah (c) was ballsy but paid off. Nice contributions from Kelly, Son, Maddison, Vardy.

      ROUGH

Really wish Soyoncu had scored from that Maddison delivery! Also, my double Sheff Utd defence (Henderson-Lunny) which I brought in last week before Newcastle and Norwich isn't working out just yet. Abraham, Trent and Webster blank.

Hopefully a season defining smooth, in a forced move to try and catch ML leader:

Sterling/Tielemans out, Ali/Son (C) in. Kept Salah over Sterling after a long think....

Bought Kelly in for C Taylor for some more bench cover as I thought I'd need it this week and he came off the bench for Mane, which was nice, 71 points, up to 13k. Team's in a great place going forward.

No rough's really, wish I'd bought Guiata instead of Henderson last week

Smooth / Got in Alli Rashford for Tielemens Auba with 2ft

Rough; Moving away from Vardy to KDB cap was the difference between an ok is week from a bad one. So partly my own fault, and i an live with that. Tomori benched again and now injured means my diff Auirier now longer a diff. Cantwell benched was annoying
Smooth; nothing really Aurier 6 pointer was nice, Ings 3 goals for me since i bought him is what i expected-), he is goal machine. Southampton games strangely ending with 2-1 in either direction is gold for Ings as that gives him bonus points

Smooth: Used my 2 FTs on Sterling + Traore to Maddison + Alli for a 14 point swing. Also captained Vardy

Rough: Only had Rico's 1 point coming off the bench for Mane

      Season smooth of sorts:
Since getting Martin Kelly in on my wildcard in GW3, I have not once made him part of my starting XI. Of the 42 points he has scored during that time, I have received 27 from him coming in off the bench (4 occasions, including the 8 for Mane from GW16). Do I jinx him by starting him in GW17?!

Rough!!! After the OGS presser and because he missed the Spurs game I rage benched Martial, 3rd on bench...... then Mane didn’t play so Cantwell came in, then last night Lacazette stays on the bench so Mings 0 points. Lesson learnt!

Mount and tomori to alli and kelly for free. Kelly subsequently came off the bench for mane, so my transfers gave me an extra 15 points or so.

Got Salah in this GW and captained him (had no Pool mid before that for quite a few weeks) and Guaita in for Pope last GW is looking better and better each passing week.

Silky smooth: Highest GW rank of the season leaving me at my highest OR of the season

Smooth - a nice 84 (-4) with returns from Vardy, Rashford, Alli and Son ... plus a CS for Foster

Rough - only 36 points from my 3 LEI players ... Vardy could have had another goal, Maddison should have scored, Pereira unfairly booked and unlucky for no assist and should have been a clean sheet ... scope for another 21 points

Are we being spoiled by Leicester?

Main disappointment was Tammy blank after transferring in for Jimmi for a hit and only 2 points from Willems coming on for Mane

    Bench order correct? G2G?

    Henderson
    TAA/Soyuncu/Lundstram

    Kane/Vardy(C)/Rashford

    McGovern/Willems/Cantwell/Rico
