Rashford and Martial reward patience in big win over Newcastle

Manchester United players rewarded the patience shown by owners in Gameweek 19.

Despite losing at Watford and going behind against Newcastle, they went on to win 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, owners of Sheffield United defenders were left disappointed by Watford getting a breakaway goal at Bramall Lane.

We’ve got all the latest Fantasy Premier League talking points from those two matches in this Scout Notes article.

Man United 4-1 Newcastle

Goals: Anthony Martial x2 (£7.7m), Mason Greenwood (£4.3m), Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) | Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m)

Assists: Andreas Pereira (£4.9m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.3m) | Joelinton (£5.6m)

Bonus Points: Martial x3, Greenwood x2, Wan-Bissaka x1

Manchester United attacking assets went some way to disproving the theory that they can only deliver against bigger clubs as they thrashed Newcastle 4-1 on Boxing Day.

Following a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Watford, Fantasy managers were perhaps a little less trusting of Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) and Anthony Martial (£7.7m) but, despite a disappointing start to their Gameweek 19 match, the Red Devils responded ruthlessly.

Martial bagged himself a brace for a 15-point haul and arguably could have netted a hat-trick while Rashford nodded home his 11th league goal of the campaign and scored six points.

While Newcastle did gift two goals to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, seeing them take apart a side that had, to some extent, set themselves up to defend should encourage owners of Manchester United attackers.

They had been accused of not being able to break down compact sides recently but did it perfectly at Old Trafford.

Crucially, the fact that Manchester United were 4-1 up around the hour-mark provided Solskjaer with the opportunity to rest Rashford and Martial in the final 30 minutes – all but securing both starts and relatively fresh bodies for the two players ahead of their Gameweek 20 trip to Burnley.

Owners may feel considerably more positive about that match after Manchester United’s Boxing Day exploits. Not only did they punish Newcastle, Burnley have also conceded at least three times in each of their last four against last season’s top-six.

Solskjaer’s men could be further boosted at Turf Moor by a first start since returning from injury for Paul Pogba (£8.4m).

For the second league match in a row, the Frenchman featured as a second-half substitute at Old Trafford on Boxing Day but an injury to Scott McTominay (£5.1m), as well as 45 minutes against Newcastle, may see him come into the team on Saturday.

“Paul (Pogba) it’s too early to demand too much of him. He’s worked really hard but then it’s been a long lay off. We’ll have to drip feed him in and gradually play him more and more.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Having said that, Solskjaer did hand starts on Boxing Day to Andreas Pereira (£4.9m) and Mason Greenwood (£4.3m) in more attacking roles than was afforded to Pogba.

“Andreas (Pereira) and Mason (Greenwood) have done well and they’ll give us fresh legs.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Therefore, with McTominay potentially out for a prolonged period, as is possible, Pogba may well find himself deployed in a deeper role than Fantasy managers would like.

“(McTominay) has done his ligament in the knee. Don’t know how bad. Biggest heart of the lot. Played until half-time. Not sure if he will be fit for Saturday. Probably not.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Shaw, Maguire, Lindelöf, Wan-Bissaka; Fred, McTominay (Pogba 46′); Rashford (Lingard 63′), A Pereira, Greenwood; Martial (Mata 67′).

Newcastle United XI (3-5-2): Dúbravka; Lejeune, Fernández, Schär (Krafth 88′); Willems, Almirón (Yedlin 63′), S Longstaff, M Longstaff, Maquillo; Gayle (Atsu 59′), Joelinton.

Sheffield United 1-1 Watford

Goals: Oliver Norwood (£4.9m) | Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m)

Assists: George Baldock (£5.0m) | Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.4m)

Bonus Points: Norwood x3, Chalobah x2, Baldock x1

Amid heavy backing for Gameweek 19, the Sheffield United defence was let down by a rare lapse of concentration against Watford.

As per usual, the Blades gave little quarter in their latest Premier League match, restricting the Hornets, typically goal-shy anyway, to just five shots, three in the box and two on target.

Despite that, and registering 12 penalty area shots of their own, Chris Wilder’s men were unable to find a way to win.

The roughly 80,000 Fantasy managers who captained John Lundstram (£5.2m) can certainly feel somewhat unfortunate not to get returns at either end of the pitch.

As already mentioned, Watford managed to make the most of their only big chance of the game, Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m), deployed on the flanks of attacking midfield, converting at Dean Henderson‘s (£4.8m) near-post after going through on goal from a Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.4m) pass.

By comparison, John Egan (£4.5m) had four chances inside the Watford box but could not get any of them on target, while Ben Foster (£4.8m) did well to stop Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) twice.

“My players were really not at it today as well as they have been. These are precious points in the Premier League and we will take one and move on. We have a positive result even if it was not one of our best and most positive performances. We never played with our drive and energy that got us into this position. If you’re not at full tilt, you will not get the result you want.” – Chris Wilder

While Sheffield United were disappointed not to win at Bramall Lane, Nigel Pearson continues to be pleased with the progress being made at Watford since he took over.

During his short tenure, the Hornets have claimed four points from a possible nine against Liverpool, Manchester United and this season’s surprise package in the Blades.

With Gameweek 20 pitting Watford against Aston Villa who, despite a Boxing Day clean sheet at home to Norwich, have been poor at the back this year, we should keep an eye on their assets as they continue to improve.

“We were far from at our best today. But what should give us encouragement is even when we have not been playing as fluently as we can do, we get something out of it. We still have enough time and games to affect our own season, and it is as simple as that in my view.” – Nigel Pearson

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): D Henderson; O’Connell, Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick, McBurnie (Mousset 63′).

Watford XI (4-2-3-1): Foster; Femenía, Cathcart, Kabasele, Mariappa; Hughes, Capoue; Deulofeu, Chalobah (Dawson 89′), Sarr (Pereyra 46′); Deeney (A Gray 80′).

Giving one last chance to Tammy or ditch him? Do you think he will be rotated vs Arsenal? it is on Sunday so 1 day more to recover than the rest.

Otherwise could ditch him for a hit

I’m considering saving FT for GW20.

Firstly, do you agree or would you make any moves? Tammy on the chopping block for obvious reasons.

    Secondly, which would you start?
    A) Tammy (ars)
    B) Maddison (whu)

    Guaita
    TAA, Willems, Soy
    Mané, KDB, Alli, Grealish

i was patient with abraham but now i give it up, i though Chelsea were a cut above the rest of the bunch behind fourth place, in terms of goals scored but now they seemed to have dried up. Arsenal away is a nice fixture for Chelsea but constant niggles, subbed 75min, whenever they lead, but plays 90 when they are shite like yesterday. if you take away that crazy goal explosion in gw 3, 4 and 5 his numbers are not that great.

Should get TAA but it´s too late, but i have Gomez and it won´t be 20 points between them every game (i hope)and i reluctantly going to something i have adviced against, buying Martial.
Reason is simple, Zaha, not a bad buy imo but Palace became so hampered by injuries at the worst time (and right after i bought him) so in 4 games i was happy that i got one goal from him as without Schlupp and PVA and to some extent Townsend they lose so much pace which is crucial for them and Zaha, as that gives him more space.

Still, i might go Ayew.. Palace still got decent fixtures and he is cheap (arguably you can say that it´s contradiction in terms when i sell Zaha, but benching Ayew is much easier in my head)

TAA won't get 24 points every week, but I wouldn't just write off getting him as 'too late' - he's always got assist potential, and Liverpool are shoring their defence up. Could see him getting at least 5 more double figure scores before the end of the season. If you flat out don't want him, I'd be looking at getting Robertson for Gomez at least.

The number of assists those two Liverpool full backs rack up is wild, plus they're going to start turning in clean sheets.

Having neither of them will burn you before the end of the season.

He's quite expensive but I think most who actually pay attention to their teams regularly will have a TV of 103+ just naturally and therefore should be able to get him in without massively obliterating the rest of their squad.

you are overestimating the value part, and TV is not SV, and having high TV can be obscurred by sitting on players that have rosen high since you bought (like Abraham, Vardy etc). I have reasonably high TV, and i can get him in if i go for Greenwood as my third striker. To do that i have to lose Abraham, is he important? To me there is a somewhat larger pool right now of players so no matter how high TV or SV you got you won´t be able to fit in those you want anyway. I was looking at my team before this gameweek and the ones i feared not having was the one who punished me, TAA and Alli. But i had Abraham and a combo of Salah/Mané. And when Newcastle decided to gift United with goals, then my cap choice also made me even more than 24 points behind.

And, and this is important, high value does not correlate points, the main task is to get as many points out of those you pick and we all know that a big part of this is to identify players that are producing above their expected price.

In that regard having 2 Pool mids for 23.7 m might be bad investment-)

B Abraham to Greenwood (bank cash)
    C Maddi to Martial
    D Maddi/Abraham to Cantwell/Firmino

Probably B from those. I wouldn't be rushing to get rid of Maddison, and Firmino has burnt me a few times so I always see him as a bit of a trap. Plus, with your current front 8 you'll probably have a bit of a benching headache most weeks.

Benched Maddi this week but it was him or Ings...no difference in the end...medium term will be looking at Salah in so will need the cash...

WC activated. Which option seems better?

    A) Rashford + Kiko/Cantwell

    B) Aurier + Alli

    Gazza
    Kelly Lundstram TAA
    Rich KDB Antonio Alli
    Rashford Vardy Tam

    Button Cantwell Soy Rico

I have 1FT 2.2itb and still got WC!
Seems a waste but not sure if I need to use it?! Although tempted to try and get Salah/Mane and Firmino in. Is Liv triple up with TAA too much?

    Cheers

Might as well use it, could find better midfielders than Rich and Antonio imo.

Triple Pool isn't too much but not a fan of Firmino. He's essentially a midfielder and doesnt get consistent returns. If you want the triple it surely has to be Mane, Salah and TAA or Mane/Salah, TAA and Robertson.

Yeah Rich and Antonio were a xmas punt to be honest. Mount to Antonio paid off yesterday.

Maybe I'll downgrade Tammy to then get Salah or Mane. Toin cross between those 2!

Keepers could be changed up, especially with Lloris getting closer to coming back. You wouldn't want to use a transfer in the future sorting it out and Spurs aren't doing clean sheets right now. I would want at least 1 Liv attacker

Im in a situation where i have my WC but is happy with my team.
    How can i improve this?

    Pope, Button
    Taa, Digne, Lundstram, Rico, Kelly
    Mane, KDB, Grealish, Alli, Cantwell
    Rashford, Ings, Vardy

    1.2 ITB.

Maybe swap Pope for Ramsdale, and maybe Mane to Salah (although that's personal preference to an extent). Generally though, not much I'd change there. Managing all that without a single wildcard is impressive!

Out of interest, how many points hits have you taken this season? And what OR are you?

Thanks! Ive had a quite bad season so far actually. Im currently 190k OR. But, i have had 9 green arrows in the last 10 GW’s. My OR was more than 2 million in GW 10. I have taken 5 hits. Top 10k looking more likely now 🙂

Currently have Mane', which one to get?

    A- Salah (c)

    Kane + Zaha > Maupay + Salah

B- TAA, captain Kane or Vardy

    Zaha + Tomori > 4.5 midfielder + TAA

How to get KDB? Anyone worth shifting?

Kane is my differential cap for next few.

    Henderson
    TAA - Soyuncu - Kelly
    Mane - Dele - Maddison - Grealish
    Kane - Vardy - Rashford

    McGovern - Lundstram - Cantwell - Rico

Have a FT to use, thinking of Tomori to him as a differential. Will probably do it bar no injury scares in tonight’s game.

Wolves with Wily Boly are no pushovers

Without... still no pushovers - but KDB exists on a different plane to mere mortal footballers

If Pep gives him the 10 againwith Dilva out it could get ugly for Wolves

He was sold en masses in the run up to the CWC

It was an approach encouraged by Andy’s article on FFS too

The mind boggles at how reckless that was

As someone who sold him this week on my WC, I am going to meekly defend myself against the accusation of being 'reckless'. I swapped him for VVD, to get a bit of extra cash to use elsewhere. With VVD covering off any clean sheet points, I thought that with (on paper) a tough away game at Leicester and the possibility of TAA being rotated for one of the next 2 home games, VVD could match him for points in the short term. Like literally everyone else, I did not predict TAA to score 24 points in what should have been one of the toughest games of their season.

Yeah despite the crazy score from him last night anyone who watches him play often will know that he has that sort of performance in him. He is just so attacking.

If you've been watching him play week in week out, he could have got a haul everyweek if even half the big chances he creates gets converted. If you play 3 at the back with Lund/TAA you're actually playing a 1-6-3 every week!
