Why I’m making a move for Adama Traore with an eye on Double Gameweek 24

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy looks at ways of funding a Liverpool triple-up ahead of Double Gameweek 24.

One step forward, two steps back. That’s the story of my Fantasy Premier League season so far.

The high of my captain Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) scoring in the 95th minute had set me up for jubilation on Saturday evening, only for the decision of not captaining Sadio Mané (£12.3m) or Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5m) to bring me crashing back to reality with yet another red arrow and a rank of 592,933.

What I’m finding is mistakes are bringing indecision. Selling Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) in Gameweek 18 turned out to be a huge error. Going into Gameweek 20 I decided to hold my transfers instead of taking a further hit to bring in the Liverpool right-back along with Anthony Martial (£7.9m). That turned out to be another mistake.

When things are going well it’s easy to feel like you’ll keep making the right decision; I find the opposite happens when things are going badly.

If I’d had three green arrows over Christmas I think I’d have already made my decision for Gameweek 21. Instead I sit here writing this wondering whether taking out Dele Alli (£8.9m) before Southampton is the right call. If I make that transfer who do I bring in? There’s Martial, which may mean losing Rashford later on to fund three Liverpool players, or I could just bring in Adama Traoré (£5.5m), who would make the money situation a lot easier.

Is this a case of overthinking or not thinking enough? Is Traoré really the answer? I’m not sure any more and the buzz of sugar from all of the Christmas chocolate and mince pies isn’t helping me think clearly.

I continue to look at my team on paper and am quite happy with it. There’s certainly a Liverpool defender-shaped hole which I’ll rectify soon but other than that, it looks good.

Two free transfers means I have to make a move this week though and with Mané my only Liverpool player, I have to think ahead to how I get two more – hence losing Alli this week.

I can’t watch many more Liverpool matches without owning Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool have a full-back who can pass like De Bruyne and it’s a difficult watch for a non-owner.

This is where Traoré comes in. He lets me get three Liverpool players in just three moves. Given that I can only triple captain one, I’m currently leaning towards double defence instead of attack as going for Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) would mean losing De Bruyne. I think fixtures from Gameweek 24 onwards make it viable but it’s still a tough call.

When you compare Martial and Traoré it doesn’t actually make for bad reading over the last four Gameweeks. The Wolves winger has created more chances and had more goal attempts, although not as many in the box. The quality of the assist potential looks good as well and it’s even better when you consider Wolves have played Spurs, Man City and Liverpool over those fixtures.

You’d expect Martial to continue to get the better chances in front of goal but the £2.4m difference cannot be ignored.

According to FPL, Traoré is the second-best midfielder in terms of value over the season (based on points per million) and that doesn’t take into account that he played some of the earlier matches at wing-back.

Given Wolves rested key players in Gameweek 20, I think Watford away might not be as bad a fixture as it may have looked since Nigel Pearson came in. With Newcastle and Southampton to follow, I think I’ve just about talked myself into buying Traoré.

That’s right, I’m going to buy Adama Traoré. At some point in May I’ll look back at where it all went wrong this season. There’s a few key talking points and this may well be one of them.

Nil. Not a hope in hell that Klopp risks their current position with an FA cup rest around the corner. The very last thing on his mind will be playing an under strength team and risking a loss...maybe.

FA cup is vs everton and he won't want to lose it too.. Carlo is the only manager who won/drew vs klopp this year.

I don’t see that he’ll be too bothered about that cup game. In a season like Liverpool’s he has to try and pin point when to rest his best players. I just can’t see the FA cup being anything other than that. In fact i’d even consider he’d be glad to see it taken out of his schedule...or at least not upset by it.

Which brings me to my next question I need to make a transfer but only transfer I want to do this GW is Salah to Mane. There has not been a game lately where Salah outscored Mane, when playing.

Salah was my punt, which I was in a position to do, because I had a great team, but it didn't pay off, so back to grinding.

I think it's likely both will start. If it's regarding a captain choice tho I'd go Vardy over these two to be "safe"

Grealish to Traore here. Btw what made you opt for Trossard.? I like him as a player and brighton got good fixtures

If he gets a continuous run if games could be gold. If so he might actually be my Traore replacement if that punt goes south

Id go for it if there is no pressing issues. Both on equal points.Traore beaming with confidence after destroying city and spurs.

While Grealish looks like he will regress in a dejected villa side fighting relegation with a misfiring striker to feed to

I put my money on Traore for rest of season

Hi guys, hope all is well.
Just need a little assistance here. On a WC, don't ask, needs to be done 😉

    Team right now is:

    XXX
    TAA - Lundstram - XXX
    Martial - Mane - KDB - Maddison
    Vardy - Rashford - Jiminez
    __________________________
Button: XXX - Holgate - Dendoncker

Struggling a bit to decide on defence options, so would like some opinions on these options please.

    Goalkeeper:

    1) Ryan
    2) Fabianski

    Defence:

    A) VVD + Reid
    B) Gomez + Evans
    C) Robbo + two 3.9 DEF (probably not advisable)

Thanks guys, last little pieces here 😉

When has having both salah and Mane benefitted players? Can't think of one week where they've both hauled. I've had both from nearly the start of the season until recently (had to WC), and trust me, it just doesn't work.
Sucks budget, heavily dependent on both to perform when it will be one or the other, will always captain the wrong one most likely. There's so many more cons than pros to have both, but jsut my 2 cents so people learn from my mistakes and save others heartache imo.

I don't actually disagree with you. However one of them could go crazy during the DGW and I am setting up my team to switch Alli for Salah. I will most likely then trade salah back out for Son or Sterling for GW25

I agree. I can't be arsed to disassemble my team to fit both Salah and Mane in with TaA
Either one could Haul. That way you've got both covered.

To be fair it could go either way. Those with double defence could do OK too.

It's a head f**k so I'll go with what's laid out easy. Upgrade a defender to VVD or Robbo and go 2 in the back.

That's the way for sure imo, having both simply doesn't work, but suppose how it looks nice is what people are drawn to.
Just one and 2 defenders is sooooo much the right way to go about it 😉

Yeah. You could well be right.
Well I'm glad that's the way my cookie crumbled. Captain Mane who is the only pool mid I have. Or go all daredevil and slap the big armband on Trent.

Should I splash out on Robbo or get me 0.4 I the bank with VVD??

              For sure 😉
Hmmm, slapping it on Trent could be masterful. If the rest of the team doesn't suffer too much it has to be Robbo, then again VVD is pretty much the same with his ping assists and goals.

It actually works quite nicely imo if you get cheap up top with an Ings DCL, Greenwood frontline for example and a power 5 mid (something I'm considering). Just need to hope Vardy underperforms second half of the season 😉

I'm actually strongly considering gambling on it by selling Vardy and going cheap up top...little to lose and it would be fun especially if Vardy hits a dry spell 🙂

Ahh man, don't be fooled, that 's what i've done for much of the season and it doesn't work the weight put on cheapter strikers and the expensive duo to perform in mid doesn't happen. Been there, done it, doesn't work 😉

Well I've had the Trent + Robbo double up and that wasnt great either. Think the second half of the season will be much better for that double up tbf. I'm just bored of the game and feel like doing something completely different on WC before the DGW comes around

True. I saw that start of sea on trend of 2 big pool defenders fail as the classic cheapo defenders got similar points per value.

Numbers wise it makes sense, but Rasford may become gold, he is my "differential" and we have players like Maupay and Calvert-Levin and Ings for Jimenez same expected points but cheaper. But you should definitely have Martial, I would prefer Martial and Rashford and cheap 3rd striker.

Martial and Calvert Lewin are such a good transfers for Grealish and Abraham in next gameweek. But what do you think about doing it this gameweek? I have 2 free transfers, need to do something.

I'm sure City wont keep a clean sheet and that could be my boy there scoring. Also having still Abraham is not something to be proud of, he will keep getting 2 pointers and it's an early kick-off on 1st of January far away from home. Grealish away is like every other Aston Villa away game - miserable.

So why not do the transfer Grealish, Abraham -> Martial, Calwert-Lewin now?

Managers with 2 pool defence and one of mo/mane come out on top imo in GW 24, double defence seriously going under the radar, and for the reasons suggested above in parts, having both Salah and Mane just doesn't work.

Haha so true! I just originally had TAA +VVD+Mane, but just switch VVD for Gomez to allow for some more flexibility.
VVD should be safe from roatation i'd of thought, it's usually been TAA + Robbo that are rotated.

Agreed in that you can have a decent team. You're sacrificing that 3rd forward and 4th mid of course but that's what you get for two of the best players for a double gw

      3. Salah’s Sonnet
        • 12 Years
        4 years, 3 months ago

Oh , no ya can afford a decent team with them both, but not as good a team as it could allow obviously. It's the level of dependence on both to both haul every game, it's too much money wasted if only one performs imo.

Do we really need to double up on liverpool defs when TAA Soy Lundstram offers great value? (With Dunk and Sidibe alternative choices)

I really want one of Richarlison / DCL going forward. If I hadnt 2FTs I would actually consider wilcarding this GW crazy as it sounds as my team is good lol. Prob just downgrade Hendo to a 4.0 and save FT, although Salah to Mane is also tempting with my second FT!

A good time to think about future plans. Do you want Mane in 24? If so start putting money aside for him. Downgrade keeper, etc.
