Why I’m making a move for Adama Traore with an eye on Double Gameweek 24

Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy looks at ways of funding a Liverpool triple-up ahead of Double Gameweek 24.

One step forward, two steps back. That’s the story of my Fantasy Premier League season so far.

The high of my captain Marcus Rashford (£9.1m) scoring in the 95th minute had set me up for jubilation on Saturday evening, only for the decision of not captaining Sadio Mané (£12.3m) or Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5m) to bring me crashing back to reality with yet another red arrow and a rank of 592,933.

What I’m finding is mistakes are bringing indecision. Selling Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) in Gameweek 18 turned out to be a huge error. Going into Gameweek 20 I decided to hold my transfers instead of taking a further hit to bring in the Liverpool right-back along with Anthony Martial (£7.9m). That turned out to be another mistake.

When things are going well it’s easy to feel like you’ll keep making the right decision; I find the opposite happens when things are going badly.

If I’d had three green arrows over Christmas I think I’d have already made my decision for Gameweek 21. Instead I sit here writing this wondering whether taking out Dele Alli (£8.9m) before Southampton is the right call. If I make that transfer who do I bring in? There’s Martial, which may mean losing Rashford later on to fund three Liverpool players, or I could just bring in Adama Traoré (£5.5m), who would make the money situation a lot easier.

Is this a case of overthinking or not thinking enough? Is Traoré really the answer? I’m not sure any more and the buzz of sugar from all of the Christmas chocolate and mince pies isn’t helping me think clearly.

I continue to look at my team on paper and am quite happy with it. There’s certainly a Liverpool defender-shaped hole which I’ll rectify soon but other than that, it looks good.

Two free transfers means I have to make a move this week though and with Mané my only Liverpool player, I have to think ahead to how I get two more – hence losing Alli this week.

I can’t watch many more Liverpool matches without owning Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool have a full-back who can pass like De Bruyne and it’s a difficult watch for a non-owner.

This is where Traoré comes in. He lets me get three Liverpool players in just three moves. Given that I can only triple captain one, I’m currently leaning towards double defence instead of attack as going for Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) would mean losing De Bruyne. I think fixtures from Gameweek 24 onwards make it viable but it’s still a tough call.

When you compare Martial and Traoré it doesn’t actually make for bad reading over the last four Gameweeks. The Wolves winger has created more chances and had more goal attempts, although not as many in the box. The quality of the assist potential looks good as well and it’s even better when you consider Wolves have played Spurs, Man City and Liverpool over those fixtures.

You’d expect Martial to continue to get the better chances in front of goal but the £2.4m difference cannot be ignored.

According to FPL, Traoré is the second-best midfielder in terms of value over the season (based on points per million) and that doesn’t take into account that he played some of the earlier matches at wing-back.

Given Wolves rested key players in Gameweek 20, I think Watford away might not be as bad a fixture as it may have looked since Nigel Pearson came in. With Newcastle and Southampton to follow, I think I’ve just about talked myself into buying Traoré.

That’s right, I’m going to buy Adama Traoré. At some point in May I’ll look back at where it all went wrong this season. There’s a few key talking points and this may well be one of them.

I think Traore (5.5) is a really intresting cheap enabler for them with lower team value. In the last two games he has been looking almost unstoppable and seems to have improved on his tricks and shoting ability. Before he could be one dimensional with only speed.

The only thing that seems strange with him is that all of his goals is against big six teams and he seems to have a hard time with low defensive lines in the past, similar to Rashford.

But if you have a lower team value and looking for a tripple up with Salah, Mané and Alexander-Arnold with De Bruyne and Vardy he is no-brainer and he is so exciting to watch and hopefully to own! 🙂

    Whay do you think guys?

I would do that. Grealish and Aston Villa seems to have lost their steem in the engine without McGinn, also Aston Villa's schedule going forward is not as promising anymore.

I'm hesitant to sell and lose the value on him, but Burnley defends well against bottom-tier teams.

Yes, he could do that. But it seems he and Villa is missing McGinn.

It depends on team structure and plans going forward. If you're only plan is a player swoop and nothing more, then you should really consider if that trade is good in the near future.

I was just intrigued, why WC when you have a good rank?
I have to in my position at nearly 2.6m OR, huge ultimate fails and wondering where it all went wrong and in unfamiliar territory, but at 200k’ish, i wouldn’t of WC’d in your position?

          Hello Zico!

I'm indeed a fellow wildcarder and for you it was a no-brainer move.

How is your team looking at the moment? Hopefully you team is seeing a lot of green arrows from now on.

My strategy behind wildcarding from OR 287 233 is that I was missing Alexander Arnold and he is rising and I couldn't get him in besides doing transfers I didn't really like going forward.

          My old team

          Gazza

Aurier - Soyboy- Lord Lund - Rico - Kelly

Salah - Mané - De Bruyne - Martial - Cantwell

          Vardy - Abraham - Jiménez

So I lost Abraham for Ings. Aurier, Soyboy and Gazza to Trent AA, Reid, McCarty.

I have watched Abraham a lot lately and I'm not impressed with him. I'm not sure it's downgrade at all if Ings keeps himself fit. Aurier and Gazza having a hard time keeping any clean sheets, even if their next games is promising I think it a price worth taking for the long haul. I'm hopefull McCarty can match Gazza and sooner or later Lloris will be back. But for other Gazza owners, keep him. Don't think Lloris will be back for some time and I only did it to save 0.2 so I could afford TAA.

My thinking behind early wildcard. Last season I'm waited with my second wildcard for the double week and it was a disaster. Not only I was left behind the early wildcarders who could fine tune their squad going forward with data from 20 weeks. The double week itself tends to destroy your team becouse you want to maximize it for that current week. But is it worth it so late in the season when most teams have double week any way?

After that double week my team was awful and I dropped like a stone. Another reason is it makes it's easier to use bench boost and free hit in two double gameweeks without have to think about that wildcard who blocks a chip usage. Game 24 will be week for tripple captain. Salah or Mané.

That was also a disaster for me last season, waiting and waiting and end up with Ryan and Duffy as tripple captain 😀

I think going from a strong place to an even hopefully stronger could be the right thing to do. Just hoping I do the rights moves and that January will be kind to me. Sometimes transfers alter the momentum of players, but I needed to get in TTA, so it's a calculated risk I'm hopeful will improve my team from now on and many weeks to come.

After my long explanation. Do you think I did the right move with an early second WC?

Yo man, appreciate the response, that satisfies my curiosity haha.
Well, funnily enough you make you make all good points which i agree with, quite refreshing actually, and no one way to play the game.
With your points, i agree about Abraham, his time was always gonna skew in my opinion. Spurs dreadful for cleanies.
The point i agree hugely on (especially in my case) is time limitations, in the sense of using it so late in the season limits the ground we can cover because by then it can already be too late, so why not boost it early and try to get ahead, in my position i’ve no choice, but happy to play it nonetheless.
DGW’s do destroy teams i agree, even with a WC, because then we have to remove deadwood which we wouldn’t have to do.
Weirdly enough, i’ve never found navigating DGW’s without a WC much of an issue, as some hits are negated because they play twice anyway, especially if chosen wisely and perform well. Plus like you say, i’ll still have the FH and TC to use for those GW’s or blanks also, and it’s likely we’ll have players already we’d want for DGW’s, again, no one way to play the game.

It sounds positively aggressive play on your part which i like, i’ve always played aggressively. Just this first half has been unexplainable, i don’t even know how i got where i am lmao, but can hopefully push on now and get an edge while other teams can’t make the moves i can make on this WC, so i say go for it, why not! 🙂

For reference anyway, my team us now:

              Fabianski
              TAA - Evans - Gomez
              Martial - Mane - KDB - Maddison
              Jiminez - Vardy - Rashford
              ___________________________
              Button: Holgate, Lundstram, Dendoncker

Have gone a bit heavier in defence rather than uber cheap, different in evans compared to Soy, Gomez acts a nice value saver then to Matip possibly when fit.
Originally had VVD but Gomez then allows Evans and Fabs (good GK and the double).
Just no way i’d double up on both Mane + Mo again, it just doesn’t work, and is a huge contributing factor as to why i am where i an amongst other fails. Hopefully kick on now strongly with this squad.

Very good squad and a little different also. Sometimes it's good thing having one less players to choose from when it come to captaincy.

                Like your keeper.

                Perfect defense more or less.

All midfields is producing the goods.

Perfect attack. You can also afford Rashford.

The key for you is that Salah and Mané isn't exploding at the same time and that people are choosing that player as captain and you don't. Obviously you need to do something diffrent to catch up and I really like your team. May the fantasy gods give us many green Arrows 🙂

Thank you for your kind words and honesty! 🙂

And the most important thing, even if we are super competitive and wants to do as good as possible, many things is out of our control. The captaincy is one, it doesn't matter how good your team is if you don't have some right calls on the captaincy. I think everybody knows that if you made most of captaincy choices right you could be in top 100 and that what this guys have done with both luck and skill. But obviosly a lot of luck also.

I remember Magnus Carlsen a couple of weeks ago when he reach nr 1. He was so crazy lucky with everything, choose wrong captain, but didn't play and vice captain kill it. And benched wrong players but they come in anyway with massive scores, like Lundstram 21 points ^^

But in the last couple of weeks everything has gone against him. He is still at OR 148 and have all chips intact. Really interresting checking his team and try to understand his thinking process. His is a genius in logical thinking and patherns so it's good for us "casuals" to learn a thing or two from how he plays the game. No hits so far is very impressive and shows that he have so much patient and resistance to avoid all band wagons that is created every week with last grabbers. He is not a point chaser and I try to be the same.

All in all, this game should be fun och you should play it in a way it give you positive feelings and not only anxiety. After all, it's just a game and your mental health is more important.

I tends to enjoy the game more if I'm aggressive and take some calculated risks.

So what's gone wrong with your season so far? Mostly captaincy fails?

Post your current WC-team. I'm intrigued to analyse what you have to work with and your chances of making a huge comeback in the second part of the season 🙂

No problem mate. Damn right, luck is such a huge part especially for captaincy, totally out of our control. A case of using ‘skill’ to maximise luck haha.
The Magnus story is an interesting one, i like how he doesn’t point chase, which is what i’ve tried not to do and gone different and still got punished, even tried the patient approach, didn’t work, so time for a WC refresh.
For sure, it’s only because it’s something we’re passionate about why it affects us slightly, but yes more things important it’s just a game.
Oh god, everything......dumped KDB for his 19 pt haul, dumped salah after holding onto him all season for his two hauls, dunped TAA for his 24 pt haul the damn week before after he wasn’t doing anything great, and then little things like choosing Tielemans over Maddison, oh, and not doing Tammy > Ings. All calls i should of known were wrong! I can get angry at that, but it’s been and gone lol. Also, many captaincy fails yes. Just really needed this fresh go at things now, just hope i can claw things back in time for my ML.

But hopefully the only way is up and you will see almost only green Arrows from now on and you reach a respectable OR. If things go your way for 5 weeks in the row you can soon be 100k.

There are so much movement up and down at this stage of the season.

What do you think is your weak link in your strategy? Only not double Salah/Mane?

Hehe indeed, can’t write it this season lol. Man i really hope so, would love to climb that high. You’re right, minimal margins somewhat still in terms of points.

Doubling up on pool mids was defo a big fail of mine, and taking too many hits and captain fails are the standout weak links i’d say up to now. Just hope to really push on quickly with this squad going forward 😉

    My transfer thoughts:

    Grealish -> Traore this week
Soyuncu + Kane -> TAA + Rashford next week (free)

    Does it sound okay?

It could work. I don't like Kane as a player. Slow as a snail and seems to playing defensive midfielder just to get hold of the ball. Don't know if Rashford is the best replacement, depends on your team structure.

      What's your other strikers?

can you move out someone other than soy, leicester's fixtures look good for clean sheets going forward. Rashford and traore are both solid picks though

        Full team:
        Gazza
        VVD Soy Lundstram Rico Kelly
        KDB Salah Richarlison Grealish Cantwell
        Kane Vardy Ings

I guess Ings/Rich are the two others I could move.. any ideas?

I’d save the FT. I feel the Everton and West Ham lineups aren’t certain yet and that 2FT next week is way more powerful.

exactly, he has chipped in with a couple a decent hauls but if you don’t catch them then I think he can really frustrate for 4 or 5 game weeks.

Of course this is the definition of such players

What also worries me is when Wolves have the full back 5 fit, Dendoncker pushes in to the holding mid role and then there are a lot players fighting for an attacking spot.

I think I will stick to Maddison as my fourth mid. Nailed, attacking, set pieces etc
