Kane suffers hamstring tear as Heaton and Wesley are ruled out for the season

There is no Fantasy Premier League deadline to worry about this weekend but there is no less team news to report, with many of the Premier League managers (or their assistants) holding press conferences on Friday ahead of the FA Cup third round.

There are several notable injury updates to bring you.

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed late this afternoon that, following assessment today, Harry Kane suffered a tear in his left hamstring during the defeat to Southampton.

The club’s medical staff will continue to review the injury and no timeframe has been put on his return but Jose Mourinho said in his presser earlier:

I don’t know yet, maybe later today we have news but if you ask me just my feeling – good news or bad news – I am more on bad news than good news, that’s my feeling.

Some opinions from the medical department before the test results: I don’t think we’re going to have good news. We can say that no Middlesbrough [in the FA Cup] for Harry Kane.

The Special One also provided an update on Tanguy Ndombele (hip), saying:

In this moment he can’t give anything because he is injured. What he can give is what he gave against Norwich which was clearly a very, very good performance.

Spurs earlier confirmed that Eric Dier (illness) and Kyle Walker-Peters (calf) have returned to training.

Son Heung-min is available after suspension but Ben Davies (ankle), Hugo Lloris (elbow) and Danny Rose (calf) remain out.

From one premium striker to another.

Brendan Rodgers said of Jamie Vardy‘s calf problem on Friday:

He’s coming along very well. He’s done some good work with the medical team and he’ll be back out on the [training] pitch tomorrow. He’s not available for the [FA Cup] game but he’ll be training with us Sunday.

Rodgers confirmed that everyone else was fit, with Matty James (Achilles) set to feature for the under-23s tonight.

Aston Villa delivered a double dose of bad news this morning, disclosing that Tom Heaton and Wesley will miss the remainder of the season.

The pair suffered knee ligament damage in the 2-1 victory over Burnley on New Year’s Day.

Discussing who could fill in for the pair ahead of some possible transfer moves in January, Dean Smith said:

Our only fit striker at the club at the minute is Jonathan Kodija. Keinan Davis was training last week but he still felt a tightness in his hamstring.

We’ve got Ørjan Nyland and Lovre Kalinic who are both full internationals, we’ve got a lad on loan at Livingston, Matija Sarkic, who is a Montenegro international.

Pep Guardiola clarified Manchester City’s fitness situation, saying:

Ederson was sick. He came to the Everton game very bad. Today he trained and he feels better. Nico [Otamendi] is getting better too. Tomorrow he won’t play but in the next days he can be with the squad again.

On Aymeric Laporte (knee), Guardiola added:

He trained with the team for 10, 15 minutes, the rest individually and he is getting better. He feels good and in the next few weeks he will complete all the training sessions for us. I don’t know, I think he will dictate [his return date].

Diogo Jota won’t feature for Wolves against Manchester United, meanwhile.

Nuno Espirito Santo said of his striker on Friday:

Unfortunately, Diogo is not available. In the last game, the moment of the red card for Kabasele, no intention at all, but he had a strong impact. Tomorrow and probably the next days, he’s out.

He’s being assessed, he’s done an MRI, but it’s not good. We have to wait for all the blood, that the impact caused, to go down, so the doc can evaluate him better and assess him. After that, we’ll have a proper look at the diagnosis.

The Red Devils will again be without Paul Pogba (ankle), whose manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said of the Frenchman and United’s other injuries:

Paul came back after a long spell out, two games, had a reaction. Felt his ankle was sore, we did a scan. It’s not the same injury. It’s not a major one, probably three or four weeks.

Axel [Tuanzebe], Eric [Bailly], Tim [Fosu-Mensah] are getting closer but won’t be ready for this. Rojo won’t be ready for this but getting back. There’s feelings of illness and cold, which is normal around about this time.

Ahead of the Merseyside derby, Jurgen Klopp said he was none-the-wiser about the severity of Naby Keita‘s groin injury:

He will have a scan today, I don’t know exactly when but somebody will then tell me the result of this. That didn’t happen yet.

On Liverpool’s other injuries, Klopp said:

Shaqiri looks good; in a good way, will not be available for [Sunday] but looks good. OxladeChamberlain looks good. Joel [Matip] looks good. Dejan Lovren, spoke last night, looking good. Fabinho out on the pitch doing the running stuff.

They are really all in a good way, our only problem is the games are coming so quick, that’s why there’s no real news. Most of them will not be available. Then we have eight days until the next game, so we will see what’s then possible.

Across the city, Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti said:

On Bernard, we will check today in training. Schneiderlin has trained with us, I think he is available to play. We had a problem with Fabian Delph, he had a knock on his knee. He had a scan yesterday, it seems good but we will see.

Roy Hodgson today revealed that Mamadou Sakho (hamstring) will be sidelined for “a considerable period” of time.

On Palace’s other injured players, Hodgson said:

Gary Cahill had his first training session today which is positive. One in, one out in terms of training bodies.

Wilf Zaha played with an injury on Wednesday. It was really touch and go: we didn’t know until the day he’d get on the field. I think it’s very unlikely we’ll be able to do that to him again on Sunday.

David Moyes reported a few minor concerns in his press conference, saying:

Lukasz Fabianski didn’t train today but if he is fit then he will start at the weekend.

Mark Noble didn’t train today and Aaron Cresswell didn’t train today. You could see Cress was limping at the end of Bournemouth and Nobes got his metatarsal stood on.

The other one is Michail Antonio. I saw him on the grass today, but I don’t think he will be ready for the game.

Ogbonna didn’t train today either, so he’s another one we will keep an eye on.

Ahead of the Blues’ match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, Chelsea assistant boss Jody Morris said:

Injury-wise, Alonso is looking like he’s definitely out and Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] is the obvious one. Apart from that, we’re still having a look at a few players to see what the fallout is like from the Brighton game.

Fikayo [Tomori] trained today but he’s still not feeling the best himself, he’s got a bit of a bug as well. Olivier [Giroud] is OK.

Newcastle United have serious injury problems heading into the match against Rochdale, with Steve Bruce saying of Jetro Willems (groin), Javier Manquillo (hamstring), Jonjo Shelvey (hamstring) and Fabian Schär (hamstring):

None of them will play. I can’t see any of them being available for Wolves. In terms of severity, probably the worst is Manquillo. We think Schar and Willems are not too bad, they could be a grade I or II, which is two to three weeks.

On the Magpies’ other walking wounded, Bruce added:

Yedlin, we think, might be OK. He’s got a terrible hand injury, thankfully it’s not broken, but he’s going to be OK.

Dummett, Clark, Lascelles, we all hope that maybe for Wolves, but certainly not the weekend.

Ritchie is training, and if all goes well today, then he’ll take part on the bench.

Norwich will be without Josip Drmic (hamstring) and Dennis Srbeny (back) this weekend. Ralf Fährmann (unknown) remains sidelined but a return to team training could occur next week.

On Teemu Pukki (hamstring), boss Daniel Farke said:

Teemu Pukki is out for tomorrow, he has a little hamstring strain. He’s struggling with his toe as well. I can’t predict whether he’s available for the Manchester United game.

Eddie Howe isn’t expecting any of his injured players back for the visit of Luton, saying:

This weekend, probably not, and the week after, we’ll wait and see.

Craig Shakespeare, sitting in for Nigel Pearson, said of Watford’s injury latest:

There’s four or five that have got knocks, they’re being assessed today. We’ve still got Will Hughes [out] from the previous game. Etienne Capoue has got a bit of a knock.

Yesterday Arsenal confirmed that Calum Chambers ruptured an ACL against Chelsea and will be sidelined for between six to nine months.

Hector Bellerin and Gabriel Martinelli (both hamstring) continue to be assessed, while Kieran Tierney (shoulder) is out until March.

Brighton boss Graham Potter meanwhile revealed that Dan Burn will be out for around six weeks after undergoing surgery on his injured shoulder but Solly March (groin) could return this weekend.

Sean Dyche confirmed that Danny Drinkwater will now return to parent club Chelsea in his media gathering, while Chris Wilder announced the signing of Jack Rodwell in his.

Ralph Hasenhuttl promised line-up changes for Southampton this weekend but didn’t provide any fresh injury updates.

    Kelly, Robertson, Alexander-Arnold, Lundstram, Sidibé
Zaha, Maddison, De Bruyne, Cantwell, Traoré
    Aubameyang, Vardy, Ings

    Heaton, Button

unfortunately i have to transfer Heaton out. I'm thinking of taking a flyer on Leno. I've got 1.6 ITB but only one FT. Possible resurgence of Arsenal, nice fixtures, need a differential.

Not a fan of Leno to be honest. Fabianski probably better use of finds, especially as he has a DGW coming up

His DGW is LEI and POOL, that's not a good pair. Then City and pool again after that. and he's 0.1 cheaper. That's not worth the savings.

As an Arsenal supporter I don't think I'd ever advise anyone to invest in that defence! 😀

You're right, I do think (and hope) there's a resurgence around the corner, but Arteta still has to work with the same personnel (unless you think the defensive issues are/were more mental than practical). I think my top choice would be Fabianski - I'm aware of the bad upcoming fixtures but he's got a DGW coming up and my gut feeling is there are lots of save points in the near future.

again, he's only .1 cheaper and a way worse schedule for the next 10-12 games

Fair enough, you seem pretty convinced. My gut feeling is Fabianski, but to each their own.

Leno is 2 pts per week. For that you might as well get the cheapest keeper you can.

And yes they didn’t concede against an utterly one dimensional United team. Neither did Watford.

I asked something similar during the day but looking for some dead zone opinions. What are your views on Lucas Moura? Is he a don't buy/don't sell kind of thing, or would you sell regardless after his disappointing last few weeks?

Part of me wants to see how he'll do without Kane (he was great last season when Kane was out in the Champions League latter stages after all), but then again another part of me realises I don't have Ings in my team!

    1. noahzark22

Moura prospects increase without Kane. Ings has been solid. Kane doesn't seem to worth the money though, so I think Ings is the first person to add.

Thanks. I guess I was a bit unclear - I have Lucas Moura, and don't have Ings. (before the holidays I was debating between the two and of course I made the wrong choice) An obvious use of my 2 FTs would be Moura and Greenwood to Ings and Dendoncker, but wondering if it's worth keeping Moura a bit longer now that Kane is out.

I'd go with Ings personally. Moura didn't do well for me the few weeks I had, so bad taste.

Moura without Kane around is a different prospect, as are Spurs.

Is it madness for me to go for Haller as my Kane replacement?
Which will end up in me getting Mane for Martial as well using my 2 FTs with exact money and 0 itb this gw.
Gives me Salah Mane TAA and Haller for now.
I'd have 2 FTs again before gw 24.
Anyone else thinking of 6 dgw players. I'm super desperate to climb ito my OR.
I'd keep the west ham players for gw 25 v Brighton then use 2 FTs to get rid of 2 in gw 26.
How many west ham players are enough?
West Hams next 2 against Sheffield and Everton are not the worst fixtures.

I wouldn't touch any of the defenders but I think Fabianski is worth it. Maybe it's rose-tinted glasses because he's done very well for me in the past (multiple penalty saves for my team in his Swansea days especially) but I'd be willing to take the punt. I would be very surprised if there aren't a bunch of save points at least.

Was watching Leroy and Don on pl live today.
They reckon it's most likely a grade 2 tear based on how he was walking afterwards. That's atleast 5 to 6 weeks.
Which is why I'm going to hold Moura for now.

How come more aren't considering FH for DGW24? When will there be a better time? A BGW?

There's only likely to be 2 x other DGWs, correct, which takes up TC & BB?

Or are folk using TC on a Liverpool player in DGW24.

If I remember correctly, I didn't use my FH until GW38 last year, just ran our of GW's.

During the last IB I did quite a bit of thinking about these chips. Still think BB has the most potential out of all of them but it's do hard to get right and to do that needs to be paired with a WC. Actually high risk using it that way I feel. TC does exactly what it says on the tin so once there's a standout pick that always plays and scores a bunch of points each season it's best used there (we have that in Salah in 24). FH clearly most powerful as we can plan as normal but attack a DGW hard when we deem fit. So basically BB dropped to the bottom of the pile for me so I opened myself to the possibility of using the 2nd WC early. Which I did. Needed a few tweaks and all season been brutalised by KDB so went for it. Throwing it out there as an option, to WC in Salah now and attack this DGW hard. Liverpool should coast these games. I think it's worth it.

Might be liverpools only dgw so must be Salah for me.
Also the dgw is spread out so nicely and there is no champions league yet.
                    Best bet for triple captain.
Free hit would be a waste as you want to keep your 3 liverpool players as well going forward. Only problem is once champions league starts the rotation and reduced minutes might be a deal breaker.

Yeah, Liverpool fixtures are awesome after the DGW.

Thinking Robertson is least likely to be rotated? Who's his competition?

That's what I was thinking as well. Only competition is Milner for his rotation. Depends maybe they buy a cheap left back.
Robbo is least likely to get rotated out of all their big players.

                  Would you do:

Aurier, Grealish & Jiminez > Robertson, Noble & Haller over next three GWs to get:

Mane, TAA, Robertson, Noble & Haller for DGW24?

                        3. Dendoncker Swap [use FT to upgrade Dendoncker to someone like Traore, Sarr, Mooy, etc... but would mean I’m priced out of changing Greenwood moving forward]

Every TC’er, should they play it, is always connected with Salah for DGW.
How about Mane? Especially if he us going to be your only pool mid like me. Surely he’s worth just as good a shout?

If Mane was my only Liverpool attacker that week then yeah I'd TC him. Not just as good as Salah in my opinion but the next best for sure. Mind you, if Jimenez were to pick up an injury or suspension and miss that game... TAA would become real consideration. Would likely still go Mane but toothless Wolves and WHU.. TAA gold.

Cool, just considering it that’s all, however i have already had to use the second WC, so unsure whether to do it closer to another DGW, but also, this is a DGW for pool with less interference from champs league/rotation i guess, so more reliable they’ll play both?
I’d actually be more confident TC’ing Mane, after 15GW’s of having both, Mane mostly came out on top for me. Firmly on the double defence + 1 mid now. TAA a great shout should anything happen to Jimmy 😉

I'd be so surprised if Liverpool left either of them out for one of the DGW fixtures. You never know which one will haul, I agree, but I don't see that as a problem myself. I've had Salah since gw1 and Mane since gw12 and I'm happy to keep both to the double and beyond. Salah is all around more involved most of the time so when it comes to Liverpool captaincy I just go for him and come what may.

Yep that’s cool then. I somewhat feel a tad silly having both for a long time now everyone has both and i switch haha! But i’m sticking with it, i like the new strength and structure too much to dismantle it now.

Double defence + Mane is more than fine. Nothing to worry about in the slightest 🙂

Better pick than Salah I guess, not an issue. Even as a Salah-Mane owner, Mane is going to be my captain (barring any drastic change in form in next 2 games)

Yo Holmes! Interesting. If i had both i myself would feel a bit more comfortable capping Mane, but yes, just observe any change in form.
Even though i’ve already used 2nd WC, is that any reason not to use TC for the double?
Suppose it doesn’t matter either way, it’s an opportunity:)

I think they are good choice for TC, its probably the first time LIV are playing in a DGW, right? TC on them can do wonders.

Personally I'm more interested in Vardy or Kevin (TC), just a personal preference though. One last push towards a better rank 😀

I'm looking at BB in this DGW though.

Yeah true, there is that small something that bothers me a tad though about TC’ing them for these games, something doesn’t sit completely right, suppose it’s because they’re away games, BB is actually a decent idea, i could very well do the same if i plan for it from next GW 😉

                                  2 FT 1.2 ITB

                                  B Kane + Rico > Firmino/Rashford + Robbo & save 0.8 to use in GW24 & downgrade a keeper to get 1.4 to use then
                                  C Other suggestions?

yeah, that was what I was leaning towards. Could have done A with Rico instead of Baldock but TAA went up today..grrr

Have Salah and Mane. Who is more likely to get rested for one of the gw24 fixtures?

Flip a coin. Basically, I suggest watching to see if either of them get a rest between now and then. If one does, go for that guy.

Yeah, well, they keep giving me a two-headed coin on these captaincy flips and I've been picking "tails" every time. Need something more.

Because they'll come after Spurs and Utd--lesser than in previous times, but Klopp might still want them to have some rest.

One of them might miss the Southampton game after the double. Maybe take one off early vs WHU and start that one vs Southampton. That's a possibility. Can't leave out both, ever, as they'd have no goalscorer in the team. Firmino couldn't finish his dinner these days.
