Liverpool assets providing FPL managers with Double Gameweek 24 dilemma

Liverpool 2-0 Sheffield United

  • Goals: Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), Sadio Mane (£12.3m)
  • Assist: Andrew Robertson (£7.0m)
  • Bonus: TBC – still unconfirmed at the time of writing

Fantasy Premier League managers opting for a Liverpool triple-up in Double Gameweek 24 face the proverbial welcome selection headache from the options available.

Some FPL bosses will have already made up their minds but for those still deliberating over which three assets to perm, there were more strong cases being made in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Having registered only two shut-outs in the first 15 Gameweeks of the season, the Reds have now banked five clean sheets in a row – more than nine other Premier League clubs, including Spurs, Wolves, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, have managed all season.

With full-backs Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m), we’re not just getting defensive contributions.

Alexander-Arnold already has 12 attacking returns to his name in 2019/20 but took a backseat against the Blades, with fellow full-back Robertson banking an assist and maximum bonus for his first double-digit haul since Gameweek 36 of last season.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m), about as nailed a starter as any Liverpool player in a Double Gameweek, also looks set to pick up a bonus point or two to go with his clean sheet to move fourth in the FPL points standings for defenders, behind only his two aforementioned teammates and John Lundstram (£5.1m).

The ‘value’ bet would be a defensive double-up (or even triple-up, for the maverick few) and one of Sadio Mane (£12.3m) or Mohamed Salah (£12.3m), with the extra cash freed up perhaps the difference between having a balanced FPL squad and a fodder-filled bench.

The trouble, of course, is that the two premium Liverpool midfield options are difficult to ignore.

Salah and Mane were both on the scoresheet at Anfield, with Salah converting Robertson’s cross to break the deadlock and Mane finishing at the second attempt after the interval to put the game to bed.

There could have been further or other attacking returns, too.

Salah would have had the assist for Mane’s goal had the Senegal international converted his pass at the first time of asking, while the Egyptian also forced Dean Henderson (£4.9m) into three saves of varying degrees of difficulty and agonisingly hit the post with a cross that drifted over everyone’s head on the hour-mark.

Mane meanwhile was inches from getting more meaningful contact on a Robertson delivery just after the break, with John Egan‘s (£4.5m) unpunished bear hug on the left-winger preventing him from doing so.

Certainly, there was no sign of fatigue from the pair or any lingering effects of the chronic ankle issue that bugged Salah in late-autumn, with the premium duo looking sharp throughout.

Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) will likely be the differential Double Gameweek 24 punt.

Owned by just 8.9% of overall FPL managers and only 1.5% in the top 10k, it’s easy to see why he’s not as popular an option, having banked fewer FPL points than the three discussed Liverpool defenders and even one less attacking return than Alexander-Arnold.

His selfless link-up play can adversely affect his own Fantasy output but there has been little wrong his underlying stats all season (more shots in the box than Mane, for instance) and there is a sense that he is perhaps due an explosion of points.

A meagre four attacking returns in 14 league appearances tells its own story, sadly, and his goal conversion rate has always been on the modest side in previous campaigns.

The fixture congestion eases slightly for the Reds now, although there is the small matter of a Merseyside derby in the FA Cup third round this Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp promised “fresh legs” for that encounter although his lengthy injury list – Naby Keita (£5.8m) was added to the list of casualties when pulling out of the starting XI in the warm-up – may prevent him from making wholesale changes against the Toffees.

Speaking after full-time, Klopp said:

I will not tell Carlo Ancelotti the line-up. But I will do what I think is right to do. Some things I can decide by myself, I will. And some things the medical department will tell me. So that means I don’t know in this moment what the line-up will be, but it will be the best possible [one] for us in this moment.

But we will have fresh legs and what we need is support. They played yesterday, we played today, the only advantage we have is Anfield. We need support from the first second. We will see how it will be. It was a tough game tonight and we have to make sure we make the right decisions. Hopefully, I can do that.

We have 13 adult players. And go through this period and after tonight we have 12. Takumi [Minamino] coming in makes it 13 again. Nat Phillips – if you want to count him with 22 years as an adult player with no Premier League experience – makes it, at least for one or two weeks, 14.

On Keita, the Liverpool boss added:

He will not be involved against Everton. That makes it 12 adult players we have, plus the kids, so that’s not cool, but we cannot change it.

Sheffield United welcomed back their very own popular FPL asset for this clash after he missed the defeat to Manchester City with an ankle injury.

Lundstram returned to the Blades starting XI and almost scored within five minutes, an opportunistic effort looping wide of Alisson‘s (£6.0m) goal.

The out-of-position Fantasy defender then made sure of putting the ball in the back of the net despite being flagged for offside but there was to be no fairytale goal for the boyhood Liverpool fan, with a VAR check confirming that he had strayed beyond the last defender.

After David McGoldrick‘s (£5.4m) effort that Alisson beat away, the Blades didn’t have another (legal) shot on goal for another 80 minutes, with substitute Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) almost denying the Reds their clean sheet with the clock ticking down.

As a typically honest (and perhaps overly harsh) Wilder said after full-time, the Blades battled manfully but barely troubled their hosts:

From our point of view, I was disappointed really. I did not think we laid a glove on them.

I think the scoreline flattered us. I know Dean [Henderson] got a lot of criticism for his unfortunate mistake at our place, but I thought he was the difference between it not being three, four or five.

Obviously, when you come here, you have got to try and get a foothold in the game and we could not have got off to a worse start in terms of George (Baldock) slipping and they took full advantage. It gave them a big lift and it was comfortable for Liverpool.

You could see why they are world and European champions and they look like they are going to be Premier League winners as well. People talk to me about academies and technical stuff and rotation, but the basic stuff they had to tonight – win headers, races and drop on second balls and run and play forward and back and defend as a team – they did it miles better than us. They were more aggressive and physical than us. It was not like us.

The two parts of comfort I can take is that our supporters were absolutely magnificent in their backing of our players. We never gave them anything to shout out.

The second bit is that is has taken 21 games for a team to really roll us over like Liverpool did.

That last line sums Sheffield United up perfectly: in this their first Premier League campaign in over a decade, they have yet to be beaten by more than a two-goal margin and have been competitive in pretty much every single match bar this one.

It’s fair to say that Lundstram and co will be back in many starting XIs in Gameweek 22, with the visit of West Ham United providing a better chance of FPL returns at both ends of the pitch.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson (Lallana 88′); Henderson, Milner, Wijnaldum; Salah (Elliott 90′), Firmino, Mane (Origi 78′).

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Henderson; Basham, Egan, O’Connell; Baldock, Lundstram, Norwood (Besic 78′), Fleck, Stevens; McGoldrick (Sharp 66′), Mousset (McBurnie 65′).

As first and second bench players for the foreseeable future, would you rather have

    A) Mousset + Rico
    B) Holgate + Greenwood

    (Third bench player is Kiko)

Gameweek 21 Rough with the Smooth

How did your GW go? Which of your players were benched? Did you get any injuries? How did your bench perform? Did your captain return?

Maybe your captain was a highly owned forward who didn't play..

Feel free to post your tales of joy and woe from Gameweek 21 here:

          - Rico in my Starting XI

      - Vardy no show brought Rico off the bench taking my score from 44 to 43...

      Pretty standard from me:

Smooth: Grealish, Soyuncu, Cantwell off the bench. Brought in TAA this week and he somewhat returned.

Rough: KDB VC, Alli, Jimenez, DCL, Rico. Had Jetro Willems on the bench that got a 0, which is better than Rico!

My transfer of Henderson to Fabianski got off to a good start. Elsewhere my English midfield trio Cantwell Maddison and Grealish combined for 34pts. Soyoncu, Trent, and Salah (c) with nice scores too.

West Ham win 4-0 - Antonio not in the squad = 13 point swing.
Kiko Fermenia taken off in 59th minute - 1 point wonder and seconds away from a clean sheet

      Smoothish:
      Salah (VC) turns into (C)
      Robbo to the rescue

57 GW points but should have been much more...

      Fairly similar to everyone else.

      Mane vc
      Grealish off the bench
      Robertson rather than TAA
      Ings, Maddison & Soyuncu

Only rough is Aurier over that period, he's a mistake and will be gone for TAA by 24.

This has to make it for smooth of the week

Benched Grealish for Cantwell was hating my decision after early KO.

Vardy(c) then gets benched meaning I get Grealish off the bench and Salah(vc).

A 30+ points swing in total and amazing end to the festive period.

Smooth; I’ve had a stormer! 40 74 54 68 = 236 points over Xmas. Moved up from 23k to 9k. Ended up not using my wildcard, not taken a hit yet, and only made two trades since 1st Dec! Vardy(c) Salah(vc), Trent, Robbo, Grealish all of which were first draft picks.

Rough; Vardy no show but turned out smooth really!

Another hopeless gameweek. Back outside top 200k. Never been this low at this stage of the season.

Yet remarkably I'm still in the FPL Cup, this must be my best ever run and is all that is keeping me interested at the moment. Going into the Liverpool match I needed Mane to get below 10 points to progress (I have him but my opponent captained him). He obliged with 8, falling out of the baps having been subbed off!

Rough: A rather uncommon move of Rcharlison > Pulisic.

Rough: Steve Hall was top of our FFS Members League after GW20. Now he's eighth after scoring only 32 in GW21. His captain (Vardy) and vice-captain (Aguero) both went missing, and their replacements Rico and Fernandez scored minus one and zero respectively . Ouch!

Smooth: Teddy Brewski (255th overall) is through to the next round in both the FFS Cup and the FFS Members Cup after scoring 82 in GW21. His latest victim in the FFS Members Cup was mod TorresMagic.

Myself: After a run of eleven successive green arrows had carried me from 3 million up to 228k, I got a red arrow in GW21. Fortunately it was less than 2k so no great damage done, but a shame to break the sequence!

      Tale of woe
After 21 game weeks I finally decided to bring in Vardy for a hit. What, he didnt play? damn. I transferred out Madison and Ings for Vardy and Traore. Vardy didnt play and Traore got two points. Meanwhile, Ings carted on his scoring streak with 9pts and Madison returns for the first time since bread became sliced, returning 11pts. Thats a 22point swing, and very bad news. Merry Christmas.

That's exactly what I've done. There's no value in a Salah/Mane double up imo. You can only captain one and there's a strong possibility of rotation, especially when CL starts again.

You say strong possibility of rotation, it’s been practically non existent bar the Christmas period and injuries. Mane and Salah are both very fit, and susceptible to an early sub to rest.

        Agree in the value though.

Certainly an interesting option. He's started the last 5 games and that's now 5 consecutive clean sheets. Long may Klopp keep playing him at CB. He has a non-existent goal threat but I'd happily take 7 points a game average. It makes me lean more towards TAA & Robertson rather than Mane & Salah as the clean sheets are there with the attacking returns.

He's the one most at threat for his position in the back 5, however he's head and shoulders above the competition. Matip offers more of an attacking threat but the second half of the season usually leads to more clean sheets as the best teams tighten up (I haven't got stats to back that up!).

If I were Klopp I'd leave the back 5 as a set and forget, and rotate the 3 in midfield to suit the opposition.

Dilemma: Maddi + Rashford + Jimenez out for Salah + Ings + Maupay/DCL. Exact funds and a -4 hit. Would leave me with

    Pope | 4.0
TAA | Soy | Lundy | (Rico, Kelly)
    Salah | Mane | KDB | Grealish | (Cantwell)
    Vardy | Ings | Maupay/DCL

Yay or nay? Also, would you rather go for Maupay or DCL? Ta!

It’s a tough one, I know this is basically just to get Salah in for the DGW. But I wouldn’t want to lose Maddison long term.
And I also wouldn’t want to lose Rashford before Norwich.
I think it’s too much sacrifice just for Salah.

      1. Stormbringer22

Agree with you mate. If I don't want to lose Maddi either. Only other option would be to do KDB + Rash to Salah + Ings for free, but losing KDB sounds even more absurd 🙁

I have decided to ditch all the Spurs assests out of my team, Kane, Alli and Aurier but cant make a decision.
    Do you guys any recommedantion?

    a) Abraham and Sterling this GW and Soyuncu week after
    b) Salah and Ings/DCL (both can be benched this GW, as I have Traore on the bench) and Chilwell next week

I think A would provide more points for next 2 weeks and give me time to see if Robbo and Salah maintain their forms before DGW to make a selection between them

    The team is

    Ryan
    TAA, Lunds, Aurier*
    Mane, KDB, Maddison, Alli*
    Vardy, Jimmy, Kane*

    Subs: Butt, Traore, Kelly, Simpson

Already Villas main attacking threat, biggest fish in their small attacking pond, with both of those out becomes a bigger fish. The catch is that Villa aren't great at attacking but Grealish is mighty value indeed, gets attacking spoils even in games they're doing badly in.

Chelsea reluctant to sanction Batshuayi loan move to Aston Villa...

Because Giroud is leaving and they'd have no backup to Tammy.... but I'd definitely like Batshuayi to join Villa.

No. But one rumour was to Palace, part exchange for Zaha.

I never understood why Arsenal supporters disliked him. Was far from the worst striker they've had.

There were rumours about heading back to the French league, but I think Chelsea could loan him out the 2nd half of the season.

What do you think of Grealish as false 9? Just a wild idea I had.

I think he could, but who would then provide the quality chances and build-up play that Jack does so well?

I am actually not that concerned about the Wes situation and Villa were already looking for another striker to provide competition for his place. I think Kodjia may actually do better than Wes - let's see. My concern is Heaton out.

Also I think they're signing the Dembele kid from Lyon.

Guys, any ideas what to change in this squad before the next GW?

    Ryan
    TAA Kelly Rico Lund
    Mane KDB Madisson
    Kane Vardy Abraham

    Subs: Button Grealish Cantwell Targett
    0,7m INB, 1FT

    What to do here please...

    Henderson
    TAA Soyuncu Lundstram
    KDB Mane Salah Grealish
    Vardy Jimenez Greenwood

    McGovern Rico Kelly Dendoncker

    1FT 1.3ITB

    1. Save FT [so I have 2FT to make changes the following gameweek]
    2. Upgrade Greenwood (-4) [would need to change Rico / Kelly to free up funds to do Greenwood >> DCL
    3. Dendoncker Swap [use FT to upgrade Dendoncker to someone like Traore, Sarr, Mooy, etc... but would mean I’m priced out of changing Greenwood moving forward]

    Thanks all

I open the FA cup schedule and all the games start exactly 1 minute later than normal. What's going on?

      Mental health awareness

A statement from the FA said: "It is hoped that the initiative will raise awareness of the importance of looking after our mental health, with 60 seconds representing just the first step in the journey to improved wellbeing.

"During the minute delay, fans will be encouraged to consider the positive impact 60 seconds can have on their own wellbeing or in supporting a friend or family member.

Rather than this posturing nonsense, how about if all Premier League Players gave up a days salary to mental health charities?

Mahrez nailed for City at the moment?
Could be a good shout against a Villa side without their first choice GK. And an easy switch with Alli.

    WC thoughts?

    Fabi - £4m
    Sidibe - Trent - Doherty - Dunk - Lund
    Madders - KDB - Mane - Sarr - £4.3m
    Vardy - Ings - Jimmy

£1m ITB & Doherty > Robbo after Newcastle, or bring him in now? Thinking Soy/Evans could be better too but not sure I fancy picking him v Ings for coming GW.

With 3 2nd choice keeps all at 4.3/4.4 and Villa's current patchy form, I'd rather McCarthy from Southampton

By DGW24 all my defenders will be OOP. You love to see it.
Robbo and TAA are basically wingers, Lundstram center mid, and Sidibe looking very advanced now. Rico sentenced to purgatory of 3rd sub.

Sterling is the bane of my game this year, never seems a good time to transfer him out and often think I have him as a differential so may as well captain him.

He is definitely going for mane in the double game week. Just hoping he can justify me holding onto him against villa and palace.
