How I’m using Liverpool to recover from disappointing Christmas

I’ve never done noticeably well during the month of December in FPL, ever. The festive period of 2019 was no exception.

After having a yo-yo start to the season, I needed a platform to push my way up. Buying Patrick van Aanholt (£5.5m) as an apparent long-term option for a hit only for him to get injured just before Crystal Palace kept a clean sheet didn’t exactly help.

Stalling on Danny Ings (£6.7m) and then missing out on his regular goalscoring proved costly. In addition, the lack of bench cover (due to lost points on the bench during November) was also problematic, especially when Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) wasn’t in the matchday squad for back-to-back Gameweeks.

At the same time, there were some small victories, especially on Boxing Day, with Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£7.5m) monster haul, Captain Harry Kane’s (£10.9m) returns and Mason Greenwood (£4.3m) randomly delivering for once as a risky starting pick.

However, these punches in the air were damage limitation in many respects after the dour servings of Gameweek 20 and Gameweek 21 which only delivered an aggregate tally of 99 points.

Still, I shouldn’t complain too much, my overall rank increased over 200,000+ places between December 1 and January 1. Every cloud…

One of the biggest frustrations that I’ve had this season, like many of us, is the failure to recognise when to buy Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) and Sadio Mané (£12.3m) – and when to captain them.

I simply failed to gauge their projected form correctly. Sure, I started off with Salah as he registered two double-digit hauls before the end of August. But from then on, you would be forgiven to think that Mané has been their most integral attacking player.

After all, to date, he has outpointed him on more or less all of the major FPL stats (see below). Mané was someone that I sold in September and then bought back in later November, only to be sold again due to the Blank Gameweek.

My impatience with him has been detrimental, with his high ownership and ever-increasing points tally.

At the same time, we need to put Salah’s stats into context. An ankle injury has hampered his minutes somewhat this season. But his points per game are almost identical to Mané’s.

In fact, since Gameweek 16, Salah has scored more points than Mané (45 v 31).

I wouldn’t be surprised if Salah manages to close the gap in terms of FPL points and goals scored during January. After all they have a friendly inter-team rivalry and he will be mindful that he is lagging at the moment.

In addition, Salah’s health has clearly improved – excluding the Blank Gameweek, he has started every Premier League game for Liverpool since Gameweek 16.

You could say that having Mané was the safer option due to his higher ownership level, but that masks over Salah’s recent form. It’s clear that both are as close to essential as it can get, especially with a Double Gameweek around the corner.

Furthermore, Liverpool are not playing Champions League football till February and with the league not yet mathematically secured you would expect them to both leverage this crucial time by playing at their optimum best.

There’s also a case to be made that the vast majority of FPL managers can’t afford both, thus having them in tandem in your FPL team gives you an extra edge. I hope to be in this exclusive club of owning both, it just makes sense, especially with the Double Gameweek around the corner.

Captain Fantastic

After all that talk of Mané and Salah, I probably wouldn’t captain or vice-captain either this weekend. They face an embattled Tottenham team managed by Jose Mourinho who will make it a difficult away trip.

Even if Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.6m) is in the opposition goal, I feel that better armband options can be found elsewhere.

For instance, Vardy is due to play in his first Premier League match since the birth of his new child on his own birthday. The opponents may be a rejuvenated Southampton team but I can’t see them stopping him.

Also, Norwich have the worst away record in the league and they visit Old Trafford next. If I had Anthony Martial (£7.9m) or Marcus Rashford (£9.2m) I wouldn’t think twice about captaining either.

Finally, Raul Jiménez (£7.5m) could be an interesting differential captaincy pick against a Newcastle United team that have conceded 21 goals in 10 games on their travels.

There's currently a 9-point spread between the first and tenth-ranked goalkeepers. That's so, so close and gives even more credence to the set-and-forget strategy

Bonus point: 10th place keeper, Pope, has the second most clean sheets. It's a weird wild world down in that position

Probably because the points difference is minimal, so it hasn't really made a difference which keeper you've owned this season.

I'll still probably do Pope > McCarthy today. Not actually a big fan of the transfer but I have 2 frees and 0.00 in the bank. McCarthy 0.3 cheaper which will come in handy no doubt.

Agree with the first sentence, but it doesn't give a comparison against a rotation startegy (fwiw I always go set and forget)

Tends to be more expensive though - I just like whacking a cheapie nailed goalie in there with his back-up as sub, and then not worrying about GK transfers again, as there are usually bigger fishes to fry every week!

Since it's hard to predict when one would do well or not, just sticking with a good one for a long time is better than chasing your tail trying to rotate/trade based on form and fixtures. Since clean sheets aren't flying for any of them, one CS or pen save with 10 points can catapult the 10th-place to 2nd

Doesn't mean you should set-and-forget someone like Kepa, though

The data just states that there is a 9-point spread between the first and tenth-ranked goalkeepers as we stand now. This doesn't prove anything about it being hard to predict who will do well and when - this may be true with different data though.

I replied to the same post in the previous article with my own case of rotating Pope and Heaton, fewer points than just Pope himself. It's not unreasonable to say it's a common occurrence this season if you look at the hauls of people like Ramsdale, who was at the top of the pile at one point

I don't have that data, sorry. But in an argument for set-and-forget, "The 10 best are around the same score anyway" "gives more credence" to the strategy, not that it is the only source of credence nor is it the beginning and end of the argument

That's very true but chances are these are 10 goalies from different teams, which covers half the league, and a educated guess at the start of the season would have given you a quite high probability of having someone in this (arbitrary) top ten

Transfers, fixtures and form come into it like every player.

E.g. For the first 19 games Ramsdale gets 80 points & Ryan gets 20
and the last 19 games Ramsdale gets 20 points & Ryan gets 80..
Are you gonna say you might as well just set & forget for the season because they end up on the same points or would it be better to do a transfer mid-season?

Clear fallacy of building an argument using an example that doesn't exist. It's never as clear cut as that even in hindsight, let alone trying to predict before the event

And what exactly is the 'right time'? The only major case of an optimal goalkeeper transfer that I can think of this season is Guaita in GW14 and I wouldn't say that was an obvious move for many, with many other higher priority transfers around that point of the season and Guaita being 5m. No other obvious runs of points and keepers among the smaller teams have often had hauls when you don't expect causing them to be benched at inopportune times. You also don't factor in the loss of a transfer compared to set and forget where you don't transfer at all.

Well, we seem to be plucking out of the air knowing who from the 20 teams were going to be in these "top 10" goalies at this stage of the season.

Funny thing is some other factors aren't even at play here. McCarthy, Alisson, Ederson, Lloris/Gaz and especially Pickford feel out of place where they are now. Some could be far ahead on points-per-game. It's such a lottery

Agreed with that long ter. there shouldn't be much of a difference between their points total.

But some GK transfers can be very lucrative. Like many did Pope to Guaita for GW14. Since Guaita scored 44 points and Pope scored only 21 points.

If the medium term fixtures are drastically different for two teams I think GK transfers are lucrative.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

Guaita had four good gameweeks and then fell off a cliff, even with good fixtures in the next four, trapping those who went for him in a stream of 2 to 3 points... Which was hard to predict and had many people disappointed. Ramsdale did this too at a point

They're so frustratingly hard to predict

        1. Karan14
          • 7 Years
          4 years, 2 months ago

They are definitely hard to predict but if an opportunity is there then it should not be ignored.

I'm going to sell Pope this because of his fixtures let's see how it works out for me. Maybe I could be proved wrong.

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 5 Years
            4 years, 2 months ago

That's true. Keeping someone like DDG all season is still set-and-forget but doesn't seem so smart. Burnley's defensive regression and fixtures scream for a Pope sale, with some viable options coming up. There are valid reasons for both arguments and it really comes down to your team for a decision to be made. Guaita rewarded me when I moved from Pope to him for a hit, so it works if you get it right

Still surprised Pope is second for clean sheets 😀

Reposting as I am still a bit confused

    Best defender for 4.2m

A: Lascelles - nailed, good fixtures from gw24 onwards. Is he fit though? is it ok to buy if i think he will be fit in 1/2 gw's

B: Williams - only 4m, utd have good home fixtures coming up..high ceiling if required. doesnt come on as a sub usually

C: Zabaleta --- Dgw the main attraction and shd be nailed but not a long term option and even in the dgw, he doesnt much baps/goal/assist potential

D: Hanley -- nailed as he is captain, defence starting to improve since his return

i can see the merits of all these options

Hanley or Simpson (3.9) and don't expect much

Hanley might have a blank in GW28 but you'll probably have a plan by then anyway

Not sure Hanley is nailed when everyone back fit. If Lascelles is fit I would definitely pick him. I would ignore Williams and Zab as to unsure of starts. I picked Hanley but prepared for rotation. I'd Keep an eye on Janmaat's recovery.

    A)
    GW22 Guaita > Mcarthy (2.3 ITB)
GW23 Alli, Rashford > Salah, Ings (1.0 ITB)
GW24 Roll FT or Abraham > Jimenez or Traore > Grealish

    B)
    GW22 Alli > Maddison/Martial/Mahrez
GW23 Alli, Rashford > Salah, Ings (1.0 ITB)
GW24 Abraham > Jimenez (1.0 ITB) or Haller (1.5 ITB) or Traore > Grealish (0.0 ITB)

A means keeping Alli for this week and downgrading GK. Means being able to reassess next week with more funds.
B means punting on an Alli replacement for one week but keeping Guaita for his 2 tricky fixtures and likely be blocking funds for moves later down the line

So essentially it’s: Can Guaita & Maddison/Martial/Mahrez outscore Alli + Mcarthy by 4pts (cost of a transfer later) for this week.

Shock post actually commenting on Article above.....

I'm with you on the Salah/Mane double up, would do it now, I have the funds and transfer in hand, but I'm using Sterling as a placeholder for Salah GW24, with KDB in the team too, just waiting to pull the trigger.

Also with you on Jiminez, he's my Captain this week vs Newcastle.

I'm going to pop my second wildcard for gw24 but thinking of only going 2 liverpool because i want this ridiculous gun midfield.

    McCarthy, Button
    Lund,Baldock,Soy,Kelly,Holgate
    Mane, Salah,KDB,Son, 7.7m (rotated in a 3-5-2)
    Vardy,Calvert-Lewin,Greenwood.

Am i off my swede? I think Son up front till April could absolutely smash it.

I'd make a point to watch a Spurs game and see....without Kane, Mou may park the bus and hold out for 1-0 wins.

What about Grealish and Gomez removing Baldock and the double Sheff Utd? Gives you 3 LIV for the DGW too and still a great midfield

Mou will park the bus until he gets another striker in. Piatek on the move i guess.
      Son a good option anyway.

I'd be happy with Gomez for this double gw whilst Matip is injured. Not having TAA long term is the opportunity cost for going in strong in midfield. I'd be happy with an Aurier,Sidibe etc as that 5m+ defender going forward.

teaser but probably pointless stat: felipe anderson got returns in west ham's last meetings with leicester and liverpool.

personally think it's fabianski or no one and pray for a salah/vardy pen save, or settle for 9+ saves, but weird things can happen in a dgw, tim howard scored once ffs

I don’t even fancy Fabianski. There are teams likely to get clean sheets in GW24. I reckon WHU concede at least 2 in both games. So heavily relying on save points to equal a single GW keepe.

waiting for haller to re-announce himself on the season, has it in him imo. also quite liking fornals' relatively under the radar blossoming, gives me faith in my lazy nationality generalising mind that ceballos will still have a say in this FPL season, both too talented to just fade into obscurity like they have/had

    Vardy - Jimenez - Ings

    Button - Cathcart - Kelly - Dendoncker [2 FT + 0.5m ITB]

Thanks guys - Fab / Ryan seem the best options. Fab's fixtures don't excite though albeit with the DGW.

Everton, Leicester, Liverpool. Granted CS' are hard to come by for anyone these days, guess save points will be aplentty?

102.5 and have them all since last GW. Team as is:

      Salah-Mane-KDB-Cantwell (Dendo)
      Vardy-Ings-DCL

Similar to my (eventual) team. TV so overrated - the difference between having "good" TV and "shite" TV is the difference between having (as an example) Rashford instead of DCL, with 14 other identical players.

My humble opinion is that TV is really overrated in general. It's a game of points after all. Never played for TV/SV and my game history proves you don't need too much cash to have a solid team throughout the seasons and achieve good results.

TV of 102.5 and I plan to have all three. Team would be:

      McCarthy
      TAA Soy Lund Rico Kelly
      Salah Mane KDB Grealish Cantwell
      Vardy Ings Greenwood

Getting rid of Richarlison and Martial next couple, but think the upgrade to Mane is worth it.
