Weakness down Spurs’ right flank bodes well for owners of Deulofeu and Cantwell

One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman, talks Double Gameweek 24, Southampton, Spurs, Everton and Aston Villa in his latest article.

So, we’re just past the halfway point of the season and I sit 37,727th overall in Fantasy Premier League, having banked 57 points in Gameweek 22.

Having been ranked 36,928th in Gameweek 20, I’ve struggled to progress in recent weeks, but with the first Double Gameweek of the season almost upon us, now feels like an opportunity to push on.

My advice would be to pick three of Liverpool’s four highest-scoring players – Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Sadio Mané (£12.4m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.3) – whichever combination works best within your current structure.

Whilst Roberto Firmino’s (£9.3m) away performances are worth noting (all seven of his league goals have come on the road this season), we need to remember that these players aren’t solely for Gameweek 24.

Fixtures to follow include notable home games with West Ham United and Bournemouth, which suggest goals, and lots of them, which is why I favour the more attacking setup including both Mané and Salah.

With Reds assets in place, a question I’ve asked myself is, should we invest in West Ham?

On Friday’s evidence, it’s hard to get excited. I thought they were abject in possession, with nobody looking to support and run beyond Sébastien Haller (£7.0m). As it stands, I need to see more from them. All eyes on the London Stadium on Saturday.

On a more positive note, Southampton are a team I do like.

The Saints took just eight points from their opening 12 matches but now look at them. Only leaders Liverpool and champions Manchester City stand above them in the form table over the last ten games.

Alex McCarthy (£4.4m) or Jack Stephens (£4.3m) are my favoured routes into their defence.

With some good forthcoming fixtures, working one of them into your plans, alongside Danny Ings (£6.8m), looks like an astute move.

Southampton’s FA Cup fourth round opponents, Tottenham Hotspur, are a team who I thought got a lot right in Saturday’s narrow defeat to Liverpool, and had chances late on to at least draw level.

After the break, they were less direct and offered more threat following the introduction of Giovani Lo Celso (£7.3m) on 69 minutes. The Argentine has been so, so good recently and picked up where he left off on Saturday, by scoring Spurs’ opener in their FA Cup replay against Middlesbrough earlier this week. Another positive performance against Watford and he’s going to become an option.

Whilst I think Lo Celso could be the key to unlocking Spurs potential, this quote from Mourinho suggests Ben Davies (£5.3m) could be that player and hints at how he wants to play going forward:

If you want to know what I wanted to do, look to my first game, against West Ham. That’s the way I thought I was going to develop the team. Defend with a back four, attack with a back three. That was the first day of unlucky, goodbye Ben Davies.

What Spurs do need to do is tighten up – they’ve kept only two clean sheets in the league this season, the joint-worst record alongside Norwich City.

Talking of clean sheets, Everton have now kept ten in their last 16 home league games.

Despite talk of possible rotationMason Holgate (£4.4m) could still be a nice, cheap route into their defence. If you can afford a bit more, I like Djibril Sidibé (£5.4m), who has at times been used further forward, and Lucas Digne (£5.7m).

Also, Richarlison (£8.1m) has now returned in three of Carlo Ancelotti’s opening four league matches. In fact, no midfielder has taken more shots than him over that period.

A final word on my club, Aston Villa.

Sunday’s performance by Man City was superb but was aided by Villa gifting them goals from unforced errors. Kortney Hause (£4.4m), Danny Drinkwater (£4.4m) – they were all at it.

Regarding Drinkwater, why throw an unfit player into this type of game? It was baffling. I like Dean Smith but he’s been getting more wrong than right recently.

That being said, these types of game won’t shape our season, it’s the next three that will.

I still think there is hope, and the signing of Pepé Reina (£4.5m) will give everyone a lift, but Villa need to find a better balance in midfield and add a forward, quickly.

For Jack Grealish (£6.5m) owners, I’d be tempted to hold onto him a little longer. Against teams currently placed 12th and below this season, Grealish has returned four goals and five assists in ten games. If we’re going to score, he’ll probably be involved.

Looking ahead to Gameweek 23, I have two free transfers, with £0.3m in the bank.

Here’s how I’m currently set up:

I’m still undecided on transfers but am considering selling Çaglar Söyüncü (£5.1m).

Leicester City have regressed in recent weeks and without Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) screening the back four, I don’t see too many clean sheets over their next run of fixtures.

With Man City starting to pick up again, I’m leaning towards Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) as my captain but will likely make a late call on that one.

Thanks for reading… until next time.

    Just thinking out loud.
Saying rashford does play vs Liv.
It may well be injected up through the pain barrier.
Chances are he'll finally get his rest vs Bur anyway.

Not a bad shout to be fair. Rashford is pretty much our only hope to scoring at Anfield and will be crucial in that game. Against Burnley we 'should' easily win with Rashford having a rest.

A (once I bring in Williams for Rico) leaves me 0.3 or 0.4 to upgrade Maddison to anyone at 8.1 or less, so do have some flexibility for the 3rd mid.

I am now so tempted to bench boost. I will have to bench 2 of Alli, Cantwell, Soyuncu, and Lundstram this week - and you could make a case for starting all 4 of them.

There will likely be a scenario later in the season where you can bench boost during a DGW and get double the games for your bench. Hold fire.

Wait. In recent history Liverpool v United has been fairly low scoring and it's so obvious that Ole is going to defend with 10 men and try to counter with Rashford and James. Maybe 1 or 2 goals max for Liverpool I reckon.

So I’m now definitely set on double Liverpool defence. Many of us will be holding at least 2 of Soyuncu, Kelly and Rico. Opting for Robbo means solving one of those problems. Next week Rico can become Williams and that’s two problems solved, with money spare for Kelly to Holgate in a couple of weeks. Going for Salah means an exceptionally weak defence and it’s just not worth it to me, even though I think Salah is running into form.

Interesting, it seems a pretty clear hint that they will rest him. It's about as definite as you will get from a manager. In the games that Ings was benched this season (Liv, Shu, Bou & Che) he's tended to be brought on for the last 15-20 mins. He could obviously score in this time but it is risks. I think I'll have him 1st bench and play both of Grealish & Deeney in their game.

That's what I'm worried about. With his form, he could score in the 15 minutes he's likely to play. I don't want to risk a 1 pointer when other players have better fixtures. However without that comment from Hasenhuttl you are definitely starting him without a second thought.

I think he'll start against Wolves and Palace, and be rested in the FA Cup ahead of Liverpool away in GW25. That would be similar to how he was used over Christmas, and I can't see Ralph doing anything to mess with his current hot run of form.

Maybe fix one of Kelly and Rico? You have your 3 Liv and will have to do it eventually.

Right on! Will do so with 2FTs - currently looks like both might survive the drop this week (fingers crossed)

Rico to Stephens worth a transfer if nothing else doing?

If Lund is dropped, think I would have Kelly subbed on for City away.

Ignacio Pussetto is priced at 5.0m and classified as a midfielder.

What I'm interested is whether he will play out of position into a forward role. Lets look at the stats.
Whoscored says he is primarily a right winger, but *alternatively* he can play as a striker or a second striker.
Trasnfermarkt stats have it that throughout his career he has played
    43 G as a CF, with 8 G and 8 A
    36 G as a RW,, with 8 G and 8A
9 G in other attacking positions.

Last season in the 18/19 season, he played
    16 G as a Centre Forward, 3 G and 3 A
    4 G as a Right winger, 1 G and 1 A
and 7 other games in other positions.

Lets look at Watford's formations and selection in recent games.

    Watford's attacking quartet are
    Deeney
    Deulofeu Doucoure Sarr

With Gray not being fancied at all by Pearson (playing only 39 min in the league) and Deeney playing almost every minute of every game since he arrived, could Pussetto be the backup for the CF position, maybe usurp the 31 y/o? An OOP position to watch and see imo.

Good post, I do think it's worth saying though that most of his goals came in the Argentine league and he didn't make much of an impact in Serie A where he struggled to get into a poor Udinese side.

Yeah, will have to see how he fares.
Pearson played Vardy uptop at Leicester, and Deeney, as good as he is, he's not a runner, is he? perhaps Pussetto provides a Vardy-esque running option?

        1. Would Ed Woodward

Deeney works for that attacking line-up though, holds it up and makes a nuisance of himself with runners around him. I think Pusseto will be a versatile back up, replacing Success in the squad who will leave either this month or in the summer, it's also a convenient way to move some money between two clubs owned by the Pozzo family.

Just did Rashford to Ings for free. Gearing up for next week which seems like the best option for the LIV triple up (already have TAA and Salah):

    Soy --> Robbo for free
    Alli + Grealish --> Mane + Fleck/Cantwell (-4)

If Spurs play well this next game will be very tempted to go Robbo and keep Alli as differential for NOR

I know, want to keep him. BUT:

        1. From GW24, City face 7 of the top teams in the next 9
        2. City will probably have a blank in GW28 bcos of the carabao cup final
        3. He's the only player I can take out to get Salah AND Son in. Really want Son

People who have trio of Mane/Salah/Kdb, how are you looking to go Spurs less? I hope Alli doesnt perform next gw but still it feels wrong to remove him before Norwich next gw :/

I removed him the week before he played Norwich recently, didn't go badly (although it was a hard watch)

Spurs are just not that good atm.

If Alli / Son find form, and one of the others do not perform, it is easy to downgrade from expensive options to Spurs.

If all score the same, then it is a case that you can't have them all 🙂

Rolling a FT which will give me the option of manoeuvring to Spurs next week if so minded. However, at the moment I have to say that I am not so minded - Spurs are yet to convince me., but I will be behind the sofa if I don't have Son v Norwich

    Couple of quick questions

    1) DCL or Tammy for the next 4 fixtures? Haven’t seen either teams play recently so no idea who passes eye test. Stats are similar

    2A) Robbo/Son or
2B) Aurier/Mane...already have Taa and Salah

    Pope McGovern
    TAA Chilwell Lundy Rico Webster
    Salah KDB Maddison Martial Dendo
    Vardy Rashford Ings

    2FTs, 0.2ITB.

Still undecided on which 3rd Lpool player to bring in.

I’m thinking Rashford + Maddison > Maupay + Lucas Moura. Leaving me with 3.4ITB and the option to bring in Robbo, Bobby or Mane (for -4) ahead of the DGW. Sound okay?
