What latest FA Cup action means for Blank Gameweek 31

The most recent round of FA Cup matches, and the fifth-round draw, have confirmed more details about the upcoming Blank Gameweek 31.

Burnley’s fourth-round defeat to Norwich on Saturday ensured that they will be in Premier League action on the weekend of March 21.

They will be hosting Watford, who were knocked out of the FA Cup on Thursday in their belated third-round replay.

Meanwhile, Monday night’s clash between Bournemouth and Arsenal confirmed another Blank Gameweek 31 fixture.

The Cherries’ exit means that on the weekend of March 21, they will be clear to travel to Molineux, where they will face a Wolves side already eliminated from the FA Cup.

As things stand, these are the only two fixtures guaranteed for Blank Gameweek 31, potentially firming up the Fantasy credentials of Raùl Jiménez (£7.5m), Adama Traoré (£5.7m), Troy Deeney (£6.3m), Chris Wood (£6.2m) as well as their colleagues.

However, we also have a much better idea of what it will take to either confirm or deny blanks for the other 18 teams in Gameweek 31 – because of the fifth-round draw, conducted on Monday evening, which looks like this:

  • Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City
  • Reading/Cardiff v Sheffield United
  • Chelsea v Shrewsbury Town/Liverpool
  • West Bromwich Albion v Oxford United/Newcastle United
  • Leicester City v Coventry City/Birmingham City
  • Northampton Town/Derby County v Manchester United
  • Southampton/Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City
  • Portsmouth v Arsenal

As a result, this is what the Blank Gameweek 31 permutations look like:

Home vs Away Blank…
20-Mar-20 20:00 Spurs vs West Ham If Spurs beat Southampton and Norwich
21-Mar-20 12:30 Chelsea vs Man City If Chelsea beat Liverpool/Shrewsbury or if Man City beat Sheffield Wednesday
21-Mar-20 15:00 Burnley vs Watford CONFIRMED FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 31
21-Mar-20 15:00 Man United vs Sheffield United If Man United beat Northampton/Derby or if Sheffield United beat Reading/Cardiff
21-Mar-20 15:00 Newcastle vs Aston Villa If Newcastle beat Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion
21-Mar-20 15:00 Norwich vs Everton If Norwich beat Spurs/Southampton
21-Mar-20 15:00 Wolves vs Bournemouth CONFIRMED FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 31
21-Mar-20 17:30 Liverpool vs Crystal Palace If Liverpool beat Shrewsbury and Chelsea
22-Mar-20 14:00 Leicester vs Brighton If Leicester beat Coventry/Birmingham City
22-Mar-20 16:30 Southampton vs Arsenal If Southampton beat Spurs and Norwich or if Arsenal beat Portsmouth

Only two Blank Gameweek 31 fixtures remain where both teams are still in the FA Cup; Chelsea’s hosting of Manchester City and Sheffield United’s trip to Manchester United.

The first of those could be ‘blanked’ by either Chelsea or Shrewsbury Town or Liverpool in the next round, or by Manchester City defeating Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

There are four matches which we will not discover the fate of until after the FA Cup fourth round replays have been played.

Liverpool, Southampton, Spurs and Newcastle still have to squeeze through such matches, which take place on February 4 and 5, 2020.

Therefore, we will not know about any of the following Blank Gameweek 31 fixtures until then:

  • Liverpool v Crystal Palace
  • Southampton v Arsenal
  • Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham
  • Newcastle United v Aston Villa

Meanwhile, at least one of the following matches will end up as a ‘blank’ in Gameweek 31.

  • Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United
  • Norwich City v Everton
  • Southampton v Arsenal

This is because Spurs v West Ham and Norwich v Everton cannot both be blanked, given that the two home sides could face off in the Cup while the Hammers and Toffees are both already out of the competition.

Which would you prefer for upcoming run?

Ings: BUR, AVL, whm, NEW, nor, ARS, wat

Vardy: wol, MCI, nor, AVL, wat, BHA, eve

Can have only one. Wont captain Vardy in any of those games. Ings allow to get Jimenez easily. Vardy might have 2 blanks.

He could but equally Ings could have some games there where he gets a brace. Vardy 3m extra needs to be factored in and potential blanks.

Of course the 3m needs considered and the blanks may be an issue but at face value that question doesn’t scream Ings to me.

Thats true, just want to try Auba/Kun over Vardy for next few weeks. Rank is sh*t anyway...

Will do Vardy to Auba/Kun for free this week, then Ayew and Connolly to Ings and Jimenez in next.

Tweaked my WC XI and gone big in defence. TAA and Robbo > most midfielders on the game, plus 'Pool and SU have plum fixtures. Ritchie looks a nice differential:

    McCarthy Randolph
    TAA Robbo Ritchie Stevens Baldock
    Salah KDB Perez Traore Mooy
    Auba Jimenez Ings

    Too jazzy?

Like it - and fairly similar to my WC. Not sure Ritchie is worth his price, but I can see your thinking. Like Auba as a pick given the fixtures and Arsenal's improvement. The 3 cheaper midfielders are a bit of a lottery, but at that price I think it's tough to predict who will do well. Think Fleck would be an upgrade over Mooy if you can find the 0.2 from somewhere...

Ritchie's punty but could be on pens and set-pieces, so has a much higher ceiling than other NEW assets. Easy to swap out at his price point too. Mooy's low ownership (0.7%), set-piece potential and nailed-on-ness swayed it. £4.8's a bargain IMO.

Salah owners... if Salah blanks tomorrow, what's the plan? Are you holding?

I have Salah and Mane, so Mane out looks to be the obvious transfer out this week if his injury is confirmed.

But another Salah blank and I'd really start to question if he's worth having at all. Would probably mean an early wildcard and load up on differentials instead of Mane and Salah (very unlikely I'll do this, though).

Really solid and pretty much bang on template - the one that doesn’t have Kun 🙂

Mahrez is where you’d make your gains I guess. I suppose it’s between him or Son for that off template spot.

What’s your plan for 28 assuming Leicester win? You’d be down 3 premiums on that plan with one FT

        Good point. Vardy, Mahrez and KDB? Bench Vardy and KDB and Mahrez out I guess. Would still have the following forwards;

This is part of what has tipped me into Vardy into Kun. I got him at 8.9 so it’s a bind but overall TV very high still.

Quite happy to buy him back when DGWs roll round - assuming he’s gets one - but overall thinking is to get more premiums in defence - not just Liverpool. Pereira I’m hoping will prove value.

Or should that be hoping against hope 🙂 it’s that time of year for me

              True

But the plan is to do Kun to Jim in 28 and simply bench KdB. I just prefer Kun over Vardy for the next 2 probably 3.

The alternative if Leicester lose is to get Vardy back in 28 - nice fixture and I might have enough then anyway to get Jim as well

Used my 2 FT for a mini WC - Tammy, Mane and Soy out for -4 and then just found myself carrying on, got to about -12 then pulled the trigger.
No chance of winning anything so don't feel bad.

A well timed early wildcard has much more gameweeks over which it can earn you points

5-10 points a week for 10-12 weeks will dwarf even the best of DGW wildcard points boosts

These numbers seem plucked out of the air, but yes if you are trailing you probably need to try something, and the WC is the biggest weapon available so makes sense trying something different with it. Unless you are using the WC to move your team to the same team everyone else without a WC already has of course, which half of them seem to be!

To be fair, most estimates are exactly that, and without a crystal ball we unfortunately can't say exactly how many points a well timed early WC may or may not net 🙂

But 5-10 points is a Conservative estimate at 5-7 new players performing better than their replacements over the 10-12 gameweeks before the season starts to wind down.. It could be more, it could be less, or could be around about the same - the future is always in flux 😉

There's probably a way of mining this information from FPL for a bit of research (for someone like Ragabolly clever enough on how to do this!). I would have thought it would be more of a sliding scale where the immediate impact is the highest and it goes down over the weeks. Have seen quite a few weeks where the average WC team score has been lower than the average non-WC average though, so I don't think it is by any means a given or obvious (otherwise everyone would WC early).

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years
              4 years, 2 months ago

The impact could be even more positive than that though, it could also be less positive, and could even be negative! But then that wouldn't be a "well timed early WC" 😉

For a manager who does manage the aforementioned well-timed/Well played early WC though, it has so much more gameweeks over which it can earn you points

5-10 points a week for 10-12 weeks will dwarf even the best of DGW wildcard points boosts

(Getting interested in Burnley defence too. Looking at Tark - actually very good value on the season and those fixtures look great for defence - I can see Dyche grinding out the nils)

Ah so you can understand the frustration 🙂 You are right about difficulty in navigating the blanks and double GW’s but thinking that rivals will be using the chips at the same time with me and I’ll never see me getting closer to them without gambling!
For example would you swap Vardy with Aubamayeng or Mane for Mahrez as a Calculated risk and potential jump on ML ?

Yeah I have the same worry but just because they'll be using the chips at the same time doesn't mean you can't gain on them in those weeks. I like both Auba and Mahrez as differentials.

Should say it will be Sam from FPL Family this week instead of me 🙂

But yes tempted, but not activating yet - just not sure there's enough big hitters I won't already own that I'd want.

Interesting as it's the players around the big hitters I'm considering changing to try & cut the OR points gap. And they need that little bit more time to make a difference. (if you like the "middle" hitters)

Is there more value in Wildcarding early to try to gain on rivals than keeping the chip to navigate the BGWs and DGWs?

To climb up the ladder to my ML rivals, would it pay more to bring in Mahrez for Mane and hope he plays, then to bring in Aguero for Vardy?
I am swinging between 200k - 300k OR but can’t seem to ever get much more points than my rivals !

There is a difference between 1st & 2nd WC in as much as the 1st WC is often played early to sort out teams that haven't quite been set up from GW1. 2nd is much more immediate "gainable" points.
Criticism of DGW 2nd WC is that everyone does the same team but in reality FFS (not FPL overall) ends up with similar teams and big OR gains are possible.
A lot of players have used their TC this DGW and many are unlikely to get the rank jump they were hoping to get from it.
It looks like Liverpool will have won the title and Man City guaranteed CL football by the time DGWs come around - so a rotational nightmare if they are still involved in Cup competitions.
So when is the optimal WC time this season? How far behind in the OR do you need to be to go early and try and maximise the effect of the 2nd WC?
