How Bruno Fernandes fared on his United debut as fit-again Boly solidifies Wolves

Manchester United 0-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None
  • Bonus: Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.3m) x3, Conor Coady (£5.0m) x2, Rui Patricio (£5.1m) x1

New recruit Bruno Fernandes (£8.0m) couldn’t inspire Manchester United to much more than the humdrum in a drab draw with Wolves.

The major signing of the January transfer window adopted something akin to a shoot on sight policy on his debut, leading the way for attempts on goal at Old Trafford.

But visiting keeper Rui Patricio (£5.1m) was never really called on to make anything more than a regulation save from his fellow countryman, or any other United player, while David de Gea (£5.4m) was similarly untroubled at the other end.

Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked an attacking line-up, starting Juan Mata (£6.2m) in an advanced role for the third time in four Gameweeks.

The Spaniard failed to threaten, however, while Anthony Martial (£7.9m) blanked for the third straight game and didn’t muster a single attempt while he was about it.

The best chance of the match, for United at least, came at the end, when substitute Diogo Dalot (£4.9m) missed with a close-range header.

On the flip side, it was at least a third clean sheet in six matches for United, although those hoping for a fourth straight start for bargain buy Brandon Williams (£4.1m) were instead treated to the return of Luke Shaw (£5.4m) at left-back.

Overall, Fantasy interest in their players is unlikely to have been rekindled by this lacklustre performance and their schedule, with trips to Chelsea and Spurs and a visit from Manchester City over the next five Gameweeks, doesn’t suggest much will change in the short term.

The one star bucking that trend is Fernandes, who attracted plenty of Fantasy business for the match, with 97,885 bringing him in, and is also in the top five for Gameweek 26 purchases.

Solskjaer was keen to praise him post-match, saying:

Bruno is a top player. He shows qualities that we’re going to enjoy watching later on. He attempted five shots, hit the target a few times, went close a few times and showed some great vision. When he gets to know his players, we’ve got a top player there.

But the manager’s other comments included a claim that Wolves are ‘hard to break down’, despite Saturday’s clean sheet being their first since Gameweek 15 and only their second in 17 league matches.

Such a statement won’t have endeared him to an increasingly sceptical fan base which, when added to the toxic relationship the supporters already have with the club’s owners and executives, doesn’t exactly bode well for United’s immediate prospects.

All of that is probably enough to persuade most Fantasy managers to give most Old Trafford assets a wide berth.

The case for Wolves players is a touch stronger.

A couple of new faces were added in January to freshen up an over-worked squad, with one of them, winger Daniel Podence (£5.5m), given a 14-minute cameo from the bench.

Attempts and chances created were shared among a range of their players on Saturday evening, with Joao Moutinho (£5.4m) the pick of the creative bunch and the 21%-owned Adama Traore (£5.8m) a bustling threat throughout.

Traore was in the wars on Saturday, picking up shoulder and calf injuries, and Santo said:

I know he’s in a lot of pain. He dislocated his shoulder and Matt (Perry), the doctor, managed to put it back again.

He had another kick in the end, so he’s on ice now. But I think it’s nothing serious.

It [the shoulder dislocation] happened before, Tottenham. He’s a strong boy. He’ll be OK, hopefully.

In keeping with the match as a whole, the visitors lacked a cutting edge, with Diogo Jota (£6.1m) unable to stay on his feet to capitalise on his fine run into the area and fellow striker Raul Jimenez (£7.7m) kept to just one shot on target, which de Gea saved with little fuss.

The return of Willy Boly (£4.7m) at centre-half added some much-needed stability at the back (four of Wolves’ five clean sheets have been with him in the side) and further defensive returns could be on the cards as Wolves’ final 13 opponents this season will include seven of the current bottom eight in the league.

Not that coach Nuno Espirito Santo claims to be bothered by such things:

We go toe-to-toe against any opponent, we don’t measure ourselves against whether we are playing the ‘big teams’ or not, it’s about how we develop our ideas on the pitch. Now we’re just going to rest and take this break.

The winter break will certainly be welcome for a Wolves side with more than 40 matches under their belt already this season, and it should also help Fernandes adapt to English football.

Whether he can fire up the increasingly damp squib that is United remains to be seen.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Pereira (Greenwood 72′); Mata (Lingard 87′), Bruno Fernandes, James (Dalot 87′); Martial.

Wolves (3-4-3): Rui Patricio; Coady, Boly, Saiss; Doherty, Moutinho, Neves, Jonny; Traore (Podence 77′), Raul Jimenez (Dendoncker 90′), Jota (Neto 70′).

West Ham United 3-3 Brighton and Hove Albion

  • Goals: Robert Snodgrass (£5.2m) x2, Issa Diop (£4.4m) | Glenn Murray (£5.4m), Pascal Gross (£6.3m), Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) own-goal
  • Assists: Snodgrass | Davy Propper (£4.8m)
  • Bonus: Snodgrass x3, Gross x2, Propper x1

West Ham twice squandered a two-goal lead against fellow strugglers Brighton to drop into the bottom three.

A goal from Issa Diop (£4.4m) and two from Robert Snodgrass (£5.2m) should have been enough for David Moyes’ side to complete a first win since Gameweek 21, only for a combination of Glenn Murray (£5.4m) and VAR to conspire against them.

Brighton’s first goal was a comical affair involving Lukasz Fabianski (£4.9m) punching the ball into the back of Angelo Ogbonna‘s (£4.5m) head from where it found its way into the net. Replays strongly suggested Murray had impeded the Hammers keeper, but VAR was unconvinced, if it was used at all, and the goal stood.

A terrible mix-up between Diop and Ogbonna gifted the Seagulls their second, Pascal Gross (£6.3m) profiting from the pair’s hesitation to force the ball past the onrushing Fabianski with 15 minutes to play.

And Moyes’ misery was completed four minutes later when VAR overturned referee Michael Oliver’s decision that Murray had handled the ball before converting Davy Propper‘s (£4.8m) cross.

The manager was surprisingly upbeat after the match:

I thought the performance, in the main, was very good. I thought we made a couple of really, really silly mistakes and, because of that, it obviously labels the team because we are a team, but for long periods of the game, our performance was very good. For us to play Liverpool and the effort the players put in in midweek, I thought fatigue played a part in the second half and it had an impact on it.

Fatigue or not, West Ham should have been home and hosed before Brighton’s late comeback.

Diop scored for the second time in four Gameweeks when he lunged to poke home a Snodgrass free-kick and the Scot then scored twice, with the help of deflections for both of them, as they took control after the break.

Debutant Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) was industrious for the Hammers and he struck up an instant rapport with Mark Noble (£5.0m) as the hosts enjoyed a measure of control in central midfield.

The directness of Michail Antonio (£6.9m) was a threat throughout his time on the pitch – he led the way for attempts and shots on target – and Moyes’ decision to replace him with the more defensive Arthur Masuaku (£4.2m) arguably handed the initiative back to Brighton as the game entered its final stages.

Then again, the Seagulls matched their opponents for shots on target, with six apiece, and had 19 attempts overall to the Hammers’ 12.

Fabianski was the busier of the two keepers, denying Solly March (£4.6m) with a particularly sharp save, but while Brighton displayed attacking enterprise for much of the match, they owed their point to West Ham’s errors.

Not that Brighton manager Graham Potter was having any of that:

Mistakes don’t just happen on their own. Something has to force them to happen. We pushed and pushed. In the second half, the game was played in the opposition half and their keeper has made more saves than ours.

However anyone wants to spin all of that, what is less debatable is that there’s little to tempt Fantasy managers into investment in either side.

Snodgrass has form – he’s scored two goals and provided three assists across his last four full matches – but his upcoming fixtures are anything but alluring.

The Hammers are about to embark on a seven-game run involving three of the top four and trips to both Arsenal and Spurs, while the supposedly easier games will come against Wolves and Southampton.

Brighton’s short-term schedule is kinder as they’ll face Watford and Crystal Palace at home and travel to Sheffield United and Wolves.

But a much tougher six-game run follows that, and they remain so leaky at the back – just one clean sheet since Gameweek 11 – and so goal-shy up top, with Saturday’s tally only the second time in nine matches they’ve scored more than once, that few will be casting more than a cursory glance at their assets.

Potter’s wildly unpredictable team selections – Neal Maupay (£5.9m) was an unused substituted yesterday – only dents Albion’s appeal further.

West Ham United XI (4-1-4-1): Fabianski; Fredericks, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice; Snodgrass (Lanzini 85′), Noble, Soucek (Fornals 85′), Antonio (Masuaku 75′); Haller.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Montoya (Schelotto 72′), Dunk, Webster, Bernardo; Propper, Stephens; Gross, Mooy (March 72′), Trossard; Murray.

I'm doing Martial > Bergwijn. Like the complete opposite workrate wise, only thing is Bergwijn already had 2 injuries this season. But it looked like just cramp today and the game being another level than the eredivisie. I was suprised Mourinho started him already, but he was (after ziyech maybe) the best player of the Eredivisie and i'm sure he'll hit the ground running. (and not in a Sterling kinda way)

Apologies in advance for the long post.

I've had a rubbish week so I'm going to come on here and preach patience because that's what the Pro Pundits appear to do all the time. My entire back 5 scored 6 points but I only played 3 of them, 6 of my front 7 got 2 points including my captain whilst everyone else captained the other guy who got 16. So I'm going to go on some ramblings about what I've learnt from this weekend and I don't care if my opinion isn't worth sh*t because at the end of the day it's just to make myself feel better.

    -- Captaincy

I had a theory a while back that the 3rd highest player in the FFS captain poll is the best captain pick each week. Prior to this week, the player in this position had totalled 208 points over 24 GWs, compared to 134 for the player ranked 1st and 108 for the player ranked 2nd. This golden position was on a streak of 5 double figure hauls in a row (KDB 14, Salah 10, Rashford 12, Aguero 13, TAA 12) and crucially, had seen 3 blanks in 24 GWs. Well here's blank no. 4 so a big F you to Aubameyang, getting the 3rd ranked player's lowest score since Aguero's 1 pointer in GW10 where, surprise surprise, he was also my captain, coming off the bench for fewer minutes than Leicester scored goals that week. Now kindly spare me the bullsh*t about obvious captaincy choices because Salah did nothing for most of the first hour and Southampton more than held their own in that game, the amount of Salah (c) fail posts shows that people were genuinely worried for a time. When Vardy was captained by everyone and their dog against Norwich, guess who it was that was ranked 3rd in the poll? Oh yeah, it was Salah, and he got 16, just like yesterday.

It's going to take some serious willpower but I think I'd like to keep going with this theory though, and there are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly, selling Rashford before his 12 points against Norwich was devastating for me and ruined my day. Secondly, I don't believe Salah can string together 3 16 pointers in a row. When Vardy was most-captained every week he would come up with the odd 5/6 in between his 12s, and I think it will be the same with Salah. With Atletico a couple of days later, people have been talking about Mane being rested but I can see Salah going off at 65 mins as well. Imagine if that was yesterday? He would have got 3 points. Obviously if Salah ends up being 3rd on next week's poll I'll come up with a different narrative but not thinking about that now.

Third and most importantly, there is a key element of this game called luck and the way luck works is it tends to even itself out over the course of a long time. If you keep jumping between strategies, you end up chasing points and every week you end up coming back onto this forum crying about how bad the GW went. Patience helps because whilst you can't trust Aubameyang to score one week, you sure as hell can bet he'll grab one over 3 matches and you sure as hell can bet it will be in the week you sell him. It also helps Pro Pundits because they can claim a good strategy when someone finally fulfills their promise. I'm a big fan of Lateriser because he's an early adopter - those that are brave enough to jump on bandwagons before they begin and jump off whilst others are still clamouring on. I am not one of these people, so I can only follow the other form of advice which is that the player you got for this week will eventually score, just give it enough time.

    -- Consistency

Brings me on nicely to the topic of consistency, of which there isn't a lot in FPL is there? With midfield options looking scarce after Mane's injury, lots of us jumped onto a premium frontline and lo and behold everyone blanked, whilst defenders were scoring goals galore and there were plenty of clean sheets. I was fortunate enough to wildcard and bring in the likes of Henderson, Stevens, Lascelles and Charlie Taylor. Some less lucky folk were stuck with Lundstram, Soyuncu and Kelly. Of course, there are also the jammy buggers like the top of my mini league who had Egan come off the bench ahead of Kelly and Brandon Williams. Nevertheless I do recall GW1 being a fantastic week for defences, I also had a clean sweep of defence points that week, and the upcoming GW just happens to feature the reverse of those fixtures. The teams with upcoming 'nice' fixtures are Liverpool, Southampton and Sheffield United and to an extent Newcastle, all of which are in solid defensive form. I have stocked up on these players and I see no reason why you shouldn't too, whoever 'you' are, but if you would like to keep your Soyuncu's and Lundstram's and hope for the best then you do you.

One team who will eventually keep some CSs later on in the season are Man City, when Laporte is back and they get some nicer fixtures. Ederson could be a good shout here, because he has a DGW guaranteed down the line and Arsenal are crap. Maybe if KDB or Mahrez or whoever's next on the penalty chopping block misses the next one, the bald fraud could decide to live a little and let his best taker go for it. Not gonna put any money on it but given how this season has gone, I wouldn't be 'stunned' if it happened. Unfortunately City's form has been seriously erratic this season and they have had some genuine shockers, but one thing that you can still count on is they recover from setbacks. Fortunately, this coincides with another of the season's consistencies which is that West Ham are garbage and so, coupled with City's fantastic record against them, means I'm expecting a 4-0 or above next week. For this reason I'm keeping Mahrez even though he may not start. I'm going to hope that Sterling gets the chop first because he may be injured as well. If I had Aguero, I would hold as well and not read too much into that 'feud' with Pep today because the fraud works in mysterious ways.

There are a couple of other consistencies I've noticed so far - Watford despite their recent inability to see out a match still appear to carry some decent attacking threat. Deeney and Deulofeu are on form but I don't have any forward slots. I'm hoping that after the winter break, Ismaila Sarr carries on where he left off and provides a solid differential, especially useful for GW31. Manchester United are still remarkably boring and carry very little threat with Rashford out. Bruno had a good debut imo but lots of shooting with no end product is almost the very definition of a trap. Brighton's defence appears to have fallen off a cliff and with other teams around them finding form, I don't see any clean sheets for them in the near future. In fact, the performance of these 'lower' teams has already got to the point where they are fighting for their lives and you write them off at your peril. Bournemouth for example were exhibiting relegation form before their recent 2 wins in a row. Villa are truly awful but if you bench Grealish he will score (twice for me already). Even Norwich never quite look like they're going to get tanked, they were desperately unlucky not to grab a goal against Newcastle yesterday and were also looking good value for a point away at Spurs in 24. Of course, if you start trying to count on that, they implode, like that time I sold Rashford. Ahem. The point is that there are lots of opportunities in these lower teams to take advantage of and absolutely don't be banking on an easy win against them for anyone apart from Liverpool. And maybe Man City when they're angry.

    -- Fixtures

Final section, I promise. It is well known that Liverpool and Southampton have amazing fixtures and most people are sitting on triple of the former with McCarthy and Ings from the latter. That's a solid spine which will reap benefits against dead teams (or weirdos who don't captain Salah, ahem) but offer no rank gains at all on the top 10K. For the rest, it's not quite so clear cut because those teams with the fixtures (Newcastle, Arsenal, Palace) don't really have the form to take advantage. In my opinion this is a perfect opportunity to chop and change, and that's the biggest benefit of wildcarding at this time of the season. Take Aubameyang for example - he had 3 plum fixtures from 25-27 and although he's wasted one of them there are two left. People are avoiding because of the blank but why would you keep him through the blank anyway when Vardy goes on his fixture run from GW28. City as well should not be avoided especially not on wildcard - bank on a huge win against West Ham then get rid. Mahrez is my choice even though I don't like it, but when City haul everyone gets double figures and you don't want to miss out. Brighton appear to have some OK fixtures but in reality Watford need to bounce back, Sheff Utd away is very tough, Palace not so clear cut, they're not going to beat Wolves away, then it gets really ugly. I see no assets from that team that are worth considering. On the other hand Everton look like they have the worst fixtures in the league but Arsenal aren't great, MU aren't great, Chelsea's defence is sloppy especially at home, and they'll be properly fired up for the derby at Goodison. With everyone selling, this is precisely the time when that troll Richarlison comes alive - just look at his returns for GWs 14-16. That might be a punt I go for. Or not, we'll see.

Anyways that's enough from me, a huge thank you to anyone (?) who has bothered to read this far and if not then no worries because typing all this out has been very much a therapeutic exercise for me. Best of luck for the upcoming, may your arrows be green and may the arrows of those not on this forum be very, very red.

Well done for posting your thoughts. Think of it like this.

At the time we make decisions it’s with good intent and rationale. Ultimately factors are out of our hands. You can either study and analyse stats and fixtures for hours or just go with your gut.

I’d say the latter. You feel worse thinking about all the players you could have had.

What to do here? Can I get Son in? Should I lose Mane & Lund for Son & VVD?.

    McCarthy

    Holgate TAA Lundstram Rico Williams

    KDB Mane Salah Martial Traore

    Ings Auba DCL

I'm debating the exact same move. With those fixtures, clean sheets look nailed on with double pool in defence.

Mane a headache. Minutes on return could be limited, especially with CL fixtures too...

2FTs, Kinda stuck for this week, which do you prefer:

    A) Vardy-Haller-Martial——>Jiménez-Son-Ings (-4)

    B) Vardy-Mane-Haller——>Kun-Son-Ings (-4)

    C) Haller ——> Ings (Save FT)

    Ryan
    TAA - Lunds - Soy - Taylor - Cathcart

Caught in two minds over mane. Hold or get rid and double up on pool defence.

    Mane, Lunds to VVD, Son

    Pope - Mccarthy
    Trent - Soyun - Lascelles - Lundstram - Kelly
    Salah - mane - kdb - martial - cantwell
    Calvert - Vards - Jiminez.

Since the league basically wrapped up, there is no way Mane starts vs Norwich right? With athletico 3 days later and then prem again 3 days after that? Sell him right? No value tied up too

On this logic why would he play any of his regulars?

      1. FDMS All Starz

Because he needs a win for the unbeaten run, but risking Mane days before CL game after injury seems daft

Maybe he’ll want to get some minutes into Mane for match sharpness.

My point is, you’re saying the league is won, so why risk someone with an important CL game a few days later....and honestly, I get that. But that could easily apply to any of the regular starters.

Is this front three too lightweight? (WC draft - 2.0 itb)

    McCarthy - Henderson
    TAA - VVD - Lascelles - Egan - Stephens
    Salah - Traoré - KDB - Son - Barnes
    Ings - Jiménez - Wood

    1. SB007

Not really. Have Kane Aguero Abraham Auba performed consistently?

It’s too easy when one player is scoring all the time!!

      1. TAT
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

The issue with such a lightweight front three is that it's not too easily upgradable should a premium option start delivering. 2.0 itb help, but I wonder if I'm better off using those 2.0.

No, but I never understand why people want to intentionally give themselves a bench headache.
Decide which formation you want, and get the cheapest regular starter in that position.

So you’ve got £2m banked, and if you downgraded wood or Barnes to a 4.3/4.4 emergency bench player, you’d have closer to £4m....that’s a significant amount to reinvest in your team.

I’m just saying, it makes no sense to me to have to pick between Wood and Barnes every week, inevitably you’ll get it wrong and have points on your bench.

              1. TAT
                • 6 Years
                4 years, 2 months ago

Indeed, that's a significant amount, but as of now, I don't know where to spend it if I do downgrade one of them.

I could downgrade Barnes to Fleck (first on bench most GW's, and a good overall option), but I like having the option to switch between a front three or five man mid. Anyway, this is just my second draft; I might settle on something completely different than this.
