Pro Pundits - Andy

How a single Gameweek Bench Boost went better than expected

In Gameweek 27 I did something I’ve never done before in Fantasy Premier League. I used my Bench Boost in a single Gameweek.

As a Fantasy manager who is fairly set in their ways in terms of when to deploy the chips, this took me as far out of my comfort zone as was possible.

I wanted to use this article to reflect on whether I’d do something similar next season, and whether I have a different thought process now, compared to my previous point of view which was always to save Triple Captain, Bench Boost and Free Hit for managing blank and double Gameweeks only.

Using the Bench Boost early was a result of using the Wildcard early. My season was going from bad to worse and I felt I needed to change something. Whether or not I was right to Wildcard early is probably something that could be discussed in its own article, but because I had used it, it felt right to think about the Bench Boost, and as you can see it went pretty well.

andy-bench-boost-article 5

A 99-point score resulted in a green arrow taking me from a rank of 1,054,696 to 467,182. It’s still not great, and not where I want to be after Gameweek 38, but for now, I’ll take it.

I think the Bench Boost still remains the hardest chip to get right. You’re having to rely on four players who are likely the four worst players in your squad. Most of your transfers throughout the season are centered around improving your first eleven, and it’s not very often we’ll specifically make a move to improve the bench.

Because of that it always feels like using the Wildcard to set up the Bench Boost in the coming weeks is the easiest way, and that’s exactly what I did.

andy-bench-boost-article 1

There’s obviously some luck involved with every chip, a Bench Boost with Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) getting only his second goal of the season, as well as an assist and three bonus points, probably isn’t going to happen very often. But on the flip side I also Triple Captained Sadio Mané (£12.3m) in Gameweek 24, so maybe it was just luck evening itself out.

And it’s this luck that would make me still want to use the Bench Boost in a Double Gameweek nine times out of ten to allow those four players to have two chances at getting points.

Ultimately though, I think it comes down to when you play your Wildcard. I opted for a single Gameweek bench boost because I didn’t know what kind of state my team would be in by the time the big Double Gameweeks came around, and as I mentioned before, it’s not often we have spare transfers just to fix the bench.

This is the change in my thinking following this Gameweek. My strategy for the Bench Boost will simply be to use it soon after I Wildcard, whether that’s close to Double Gameweeks, or in a single Gameweek. I think there’s even an argument to use it in Gameweek 1, although you have other worries then, like potentially not knowing all the preferred starting elevens.

If you’ve recently used your Wildcard then I would still strongly suggest using your Bench Boost sooner rather than later if your squad allows you the opportunity. You can’t account for injuries, loss of form, and team changes that might affect your squad in seven or more weeks time when the first big Double Gameweek comes around. You’ll likely need to spend transfers on your first eleven, without needing to worry about the bench.

Gameweek 29 looks ideal for that and was a Gameweek I had considered instead of 27.

    Sup Guys,

need some help, what to do with this lot?
    2 FT and 0.0 ITB

    Ryan - Button
    Trent - Lund - Soy - Rico - Stephens
    Grealish - Maddison - Salah - KDB - Salah
    Vardy - Firminho - Ings

    A: Lund -> Saiss
    B: Grealish --> Mount

2 Salahs. I'm jealous. I'd just bin off Lund and Saiss is a good option.

    McCarthy
    Holgate TAA Gomez Rico*
    Salah Dendoncker Traore*
    Vardy Jimenez
    (Button Egan Grealish KDB Auba)

2FT & 0.1ITB - currently have anywhere between 8-10 players depending on Rico & Traore:

    a) Rico & Grealish > Stephens & Barnes
    b) Egan, Grealish & Dendoncker > Saiss, Armstrong & Barnes (-4)
    c) Egan, Grealish & Traore > Taylor, Fernandes & Saka (-4)

No hit needed for that team so I'd look at A and remove the rotation risks. Rico and Traore to Saiss/Stephens and Perez/Barnes/Mount.

Yeah, with games coming thick and fast now I would rather save myself the pain of Pep making me want to rage transfer City assets out.

As it is KDB has 2 blanks coming up. Will he even play all minutes in a DGW?

I will have a look and see if I want to get KDB back by GW33. Also pending what happens GW29.

Probably not, but I have Rico and Lund (as starters!) and almost wish I'd taken a hit for them last week as I feel like I'm behind on transfers just fighting fires each week. Seems like a good week to do it as Rico surely won't return much (or even play).

I’ve been advising people (only when asked, and only on this forum, not just shouting at members of the public as I drive past) that taking a -4 for a keeper or budget defender ahead of a blank is a bad move.

I base this on the likelihood of a best case scenario, playing 90 minutes and getting a CS, is realistically only going to get a 2pt net gain.

You’re just as likely, when it comes to budget options especially, to get a -2pt net return.

The risk isn’t worth the reward basically.

Anyone think this is bad advice, and if so why?

    1. Fulchester's New Centr…
      • 6 Years

General maxim - no hit for a GK or def is correct.
Maybe in this case if it is to get in someone playing in 28 and 31 (Pope or Pat if feeling left-field) and you have nobody else then probably worth more than net zero though.

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 2 months ago

Yes, 31 is still too much of an unknown for me.

If it’s a move you’re planning long term then it could work, but the defender who’s blanking this week, will be back next week anyway.

Assuming we’re talking SHU defence for example.

          • 6 Years

Yes, defenders aren't much of a worry. In terms of keepers, many (inc me) seem to be on Hendo and McCarthy, which could well leave us keeperless in GW31 - I think it only needs Aresenal to beat Portsmouth for that to be a blank.

          1. HamezMace
            • 9 Years
            4 years, 2 months ago

Yes very likely to be keeper less in 31.
But you’ve got 4FTs to use before then....and maybe even FH?

depends. May not pay of immediately, but for example, my defence contains Holgate (poor fixtures for the foreseeable future), Lundstram (dropped and now a 1 pointer), Rico (dropped and also a poor asset) and Aurier (probably a hold given the rest of the defence). The sooner you move these kind of assets from your team, the better in the long-term.

I think Chelsea's win against Spurs painted over some problems that were cruelly exposed by Bayern last night.

Centre forward not nailed, left back not upto it, 75m keeper on the bench.

I know you are thinking of investing in James for attacking returns but don't forget when he looks over his shoulder he sees Willy Caballero.

The only reason I can think of to do this is get double Liv midfield.

    Thinking of:

I'm considering going against the traffic with Auba > Vardy this week as I think Vardy is going to have to come back into form and this weekend seems a very likely time for it to happen. So I'd deffo do it with Aguero, he just isn't anywhere where he needs to be right know it terms of points per £.

Tempted by Barnes this week also, but the Aguero > Vardy move is the one I'd be going for.

    A) Hayden & Aubameyang -> Richarlison/Barnes & Vardy (-4) (11 starters with Williams sub)

    B) Hayden -> Barnes/Moura (or other 7.8 MID) (11 with Williams starting, no sub)

    C) Aubameyang -> Vardy (11 with Williams starting, Hayden sub)

    D) Save FT and hope both Hayden & Williams play

Thinking A. No value tied up in Aubameyang so would probably bring him in 1-2 GWs after the blank.

A I guess as no value in PEA.
Think Hayden might start, but not sure about Williams - no chance of starting if he plays tomorrow I reckon.

Anyone know where Montoya has been?
Have posted a few times about this but it seems no one knows.
Out of the squad past 2 games

Potter's a law unto himself, one of the hardest to second-guess regarding team selection. No injury reported as far I know and it's not uncommon for one of his players to be omitted from the matchday squad and then reappear the following week. He's basically now got at least four options at right-back - Schelotto, Montoya, Alzate and Lamptey - so security of starts will be even more of an issue now with Montoya.

Good call. Croydon one should be easy enough for him to get to from Brighton, particularly at this time of day.

Good team but no Wolves defender with their upcoming games? Saïss or Boly.

Cheers. did consider it, but they rarely keep a clean sheet so thought I'd just plump for new c and South h.

    Grealish + Redmond > Barnes + Djenepo (-4)

Is a hit worth it?. I would be playing (if he plays) Rico otherwise.

        could be Armstrong.
TBH it's no more than a gut feeling. I think I was impressed by him at the start of the season.

      not 100%.

But they're one up from the away leg against a poor team. Shouldn't be a problem to go through

Lots on here suggesting Barnes as the Leicester midfield pick. I was in agreement, but then i had a scroll on Leicester fan forum pages and lots think he will be benched.

    Am I missing something?

I think if your plan is Barnes in you can wait until Friday

plan is Barnes but also considering Rico to C. Taylor or Mcneil instead of Barnes as Burnley have a great fixture in 31 (may be able to save free hit)

Is there anyway I can get Fernandes in this team without losing KDB or Vardy?

Got 2FTs nothing in the bank and WC available.

    Pope
    Rico, TAA, VVD, Soyuncu
    Salah, Maddison, Traore
    Ings, Jiminez, Vardy

    4m, Steven's, KDB, Grealish

      Yes...

BUT, what you're probably really saying is...

"Can I get in Fernandes while keeping TAA, VVD, Salah, Maddison, Ings, Jimi, Vardy, KDB and Grealish?"

      That's gonna be a challenge.

Im looking at a similar scenario. Im giving up Grealish in my case as I see Fernandes as an upgrade (better fixtures, just as good points potential). But 2 transfers isnt enough to do it so i have to go 3 for a -4 (I have 2 FT's). Still havent pulled the trigger though as waiting on Europa League etc

Good article and for once an honest assessment of chip performance that goes against the typical 'ARRGH DGWs ONLY!' hegemony.

Agree that proximity to WC is key to bench boost. For me it went the other way: I wildcarded quite early, and still haven't bench boosted, but on the week I played Triple Captain, my bench (Ramsdale, Traore, Mooy, Stephens) scored a ludicrous 30 points. I don't think I'll get anywhere near that even in DGWs, and part of it was down to having 15 solid starters.

With that said, I'm pretty sure next season is the time I'll play BB in week one. I remember Ruth NZ made a compelling argument about this a year or so ago and I always seem to get bench points week one. Plus it'd be nice to actually start with a decent 15.

    after blank week

    A) save Vardy
    B) try Auba, if nothing else
