Fernandes and Calvert-Lewin continue fine FPL form after goalkeeping blunders

Everton 1-1 Manchester United

  • Goals: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.3m) | Bruno Fernandes (£8.3m)
  • Assists: None | Nemanja Matic (£4.8m)
  • Bonus: Fernandes x3, Matic, Calvert-Lewin x2

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.3m) and Bruno Fernandes (£8.3m) were on the scoresheet again as Everton and Manchester United played out a one-all draw at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Both players were indebted to some questionable goalkeeping as their purple patches of form continued in Gameweek 28.

Calvert-Lewin’s second-minute opener was a particularly fortuitous one, with the Everton striker charging down a kick out from a ponderous David de Gea (£5.4m) and seeing the ricochet sail into the Spaniard’s unguarded net.

Fernandes drew the scores level after half an hour, with his well-hit but saveable effort from 25+ yards out sailing through the grasp of Jordan Pickford (£5.3m).

While the goals themselves owed a significant debt to good fortune, Calvert-Lewin and Fernandes were once more at the heart of their respective sides’ offensive play and they could easily have banked attacking returns without Lady Luck.

Calvert-Lewin, in particular, looks like scoring in every game at present.

The Everton striker might be profligate at times but when the opportunities arrive at the rate they currently are, then a sky-high goal conversion rate isn’t the be-all and end-all.

He should have put Everton two goals to the good soon after his early strike, being denied by de Gea after latching onto a Michael Keane (£5.2m) punt and racing clear of United’s napping backline.

The Red Devils’ busy shot-stopper kept out another Calvert-Lewin effort midway through the second half before the mid-price Fantasy Premier League forward had a goal controversially chalked off late on, with a floored Gyfli Sigurdsson (£7.3m) deemed to have been interfering with play as his teammate’s strike deflected off Harry Maguire (£5.3m) and past a wrong-footed de Gea.

Ancelotti praised his number nine after the game, saying:

Dominic also did really well, he played a fantastic game, not just with the goal. He was involved in a lot, he fought and played well.

It’s pretty much the Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison (£8.3m) show from an FPL perspective at Everton.

The Toffees are steadily shipping goals (just one clean sheet this calendar year) and Carlo Ancelotti continues to rotate around his immovable strike pairing, with the Italian making another five changes to his starting XI from the Gameweek 27 defeat at Arsenal.

Richarlison blanked for just the second time in seven starts but the Brazilian’s owners will have been content to again see him in a number of promising positions and, another day, he too could have hauled.

The former Watford man couldn’t direct a header on target from Leighton Baines’ (£4.9m) inviting cross in first-half stoppage time and later failed to react to a Sigurdsson free-kick that bounced back off the upright and into his path.

The Iceland international then drew a superb save from de Gea after receiving Richarlison’s pass in the 91st minute, not just ruining an assist for the Brazilian but then denying Calvert-Lewin a match-winning second goal as he remained seated in the United six-yard box.

Fernandes isn’t quite the goal-poaching menace that Calvert-Lewin is but the Portugal international, whose current points-per-match average of 8.0 is better than any other Fantasy asset, looks as if he could plunder FPL returns from a variety of situations.

On free-kicks and corners, as well as penalties, Fernandes is as much a creator as he is a goal-getter.

He perhaps wasn’t quite as influential at Goodison Park as he had been against Watford or Bruges previously but still probed dangerously in the number ten role, registering six of United’s 14 shots – albeit mostly from distance.

There was an excellent opportunity to score his second goal shortly before full-time but Pickford redeemed himself by not only clawing away Fernandes’ shanked effort from seven yards but also blocking Odion Ighalo‘s (£6.5m) rebound.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said of his January transfer window capture from Sporting Lisbon:

It was a good goal. A first-time pass by Nemanja [Matic] in our press. Of course, it was a misplaced pass by them but Bruno striking the ball from outside the box… he did have a few strikes but the goal was good.

I think he’s always trying to create something, to score goals or create chances. Sometimes he misses, sometimes he scores.

He’s a good player and we have been missing that type of player to do that for us, I’m very pleased with his overall contribution.

In contrast to the roaming Fernandes, Anthony Martial (£8.0m) was fairly static in the number nine role – but then he often is, and has semi-frequently popped up with a goal in the past when his performances bordered on the disinterested.

There was to be no attacking return this time, however, with a ninth-minute shot that he dragged wide as close as he came to finding a way past Pickford.

That he was even on the field came as something of a surprise, as he had been a doubt for the game with a thigh injury and wasn’t spotted at the team hotel the evening before.

In our weekly reminder never to completely trust what Solksjaer says in his pre-match press conferences, Martial made the starting XI for the 18th time in 19 Gameweeks – and apparently it was never in doubt:

It was just a precaution on Thursday, [Martial] probably could have played. We didn’t take the risk though, knowing Odion was going to play well and there would be no problem.

Daniel James (£5.8m) missed this clash but should be back for the Manchester derby, with his manager saying ahead of kick-off:

He got a knock on Thursday but he’ll be fine for Thursday [against Derby in the FA Cup] or definitely next weekend so not too much to worry about.

The early clanger from de Gea ruined United’s run of three straight Premier League clean sheets and there’ll be few FPL managers investing in the Red Devils’ defenders in the run-up to Gameweek 29, given that their free-scoring cross-city rivals will visit Old Trafford next Sunday.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.3m) and co, who would seem set for a Blank Gameweek 31 given the clash with the FA Cup quarter-finals, are an interesting proposition after the March international break, however, with the season run-in looking favourable.

On the subject of defences, Everton lost another member of their backline to injury.

Already without the sidelined Lucas Digne (£5.8m), the Toffees saw Seamus Coleman (£5.3m) limp off with a thigh strain early on – Ancelotti saying after the match that the club will “see in the next few days” how bad the Irishman’s muscle problem is.

Everton XI (4-4-2): Pickford; Coleman (Sidibe 27′), Keane, Holgate, Baines; Walcott (Bernard 62′), Gomes (Kean 81′), Davies, Sigurdsson; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin.

Manchester United XI (4-3-1-2): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay (Mata 72′), Matic, Fred; Fernandes; Martial (Williams 88′), Greenwood (Ighalo 72′).

Only 52k transfer IN. Fernandes has double transfers.

    3. Long ago I drew a walrus
      • 13 Years
      4 years, 1 month ago

Some kneejerkers of course but he's had the form and stats to back it up for some time. The injury threw people off but back in GW22/23 he was pretty widely considered. I had a spot reserved for him in my wildcard in GW25 but he ended up being injured for longer than expected but always wanted to bring him back in before GW31, just don't think anyone really expected him to go apesh*t crazy against Liverpool

    4. GreennRed
      • 12 Years
      4 years, 1 month ago

Has potential. Sporadic spells of brilliance and if he can be consistent then well worth a punt. Watford whipped Liverpool and he looked class. Wouldn't sell top dogs Grealish or Bruno for him but two forwards and he's worth a fifth mid spot while there's value mids and forwards available.

      1. Long ago I drew a walrus
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Would absolutely sell Grealish for him - it's no coincidence his returns have been poor in recent weeks and it's a mixture of his teammates being crap and opponents marking him out of the game, did nothing of note in the cup final yesterday for example, likewise in some of the league games before that. Fixtures are also rubbish and might not even play in GW31.

        1. Your Man With The Hair
          • 13 Years
          4 years, 1 month ago

To be fair, I'm looking for a grealish replacement myself, but i guess my point is that he wasn't on anyone's radar (or at least very few) before the weekend, so struggled to understand why he's a lot of people #1 now.

          1. Long ago I drew a walrus
            • 13 Years
            4 years, 1 month ago

Yup, but my point above was that he was actually on quite a lot of people's radars before his injury, which threw people off because there was so much uncertainty about when he'd be back. This was his first full game back after a long absence, against the runaway leaders, so nobody expected the haul. It's a little bit like Grealish himself because he was really good around GW8-9 ish then got injured, I got him in as soon as he was back to fitness in GW13 and benefited from it but most weren't ready for it.

It’s been a while since my last post. wow what a shockingly poor gw for me

Taken the wind right out my sales - I’ve tried to recover from a dismal start to my fpl season, fighting from rank 1.3m to 270k (gw15 to gw26)

I planned well in advance for the bgw I feel my team was very strong but of course failed miserably and fell to a rank of 400k

I just hope Vardy can punish the sellers and Bruno can stop punishing me for not drafting him in

Without Liverpool players is a tough one for me. Depends I guess. One thing is fielding 5/6 players (red flag territory) another is 9/10 which could be ok with the right cap choice

Depends on the other fixtures. If there are 6-7 fixtures but no Liverpool I might have to free hit. If there are 3-4 fixtures and no Liverpool I'll probably just ride it out. Has to be some decent players to actually want on a free hit.

Rough - losing out on MOM cash prize, due to vardys no show, and opponent getting Sarrs 19 points from the bench in place of him, and beating me by 1 point on the monthly overall.
Smooth - Taking a late -4 for Martial -> Fernandes, and instantly coming out up from it, and Bruno looks the better choice going forward, and a decent overall score of 36(albeit took a -4, so really only 32)

Brought in Boly on Friday night and he ended up being outscored by the likes of Williams and Tanganga... Cantwell and Hayden also outscored most of my team with 3 points a piece. Fernandes and Jimenez still smooth though and Newcastle 0-0 Burnley was great for CS points

Smooth; Saw the Vardy team news and knew I couldn’t save my FT as I had a non-playing bench. Decided to cash in Lundstram to give me some cover. Eyeing up the 4.4 defensive options Cahill stood out and was duly parked as first sub. 6 very useful points! Wildcard recruits Fernandes and Taylor returning too, along with that old stager of mine Jimenez.

Rough; Salah(c), Trent, Robbo, doughnuts from Boly and Dendoncker.

38 points and enough to move up 122 spots to 1,008 OR. On course for my best ever season.

Smooth; Doherty. Simple as that. Jimi return was nice after DCL goal, Lascelles did exactly what i bought him in for, 6 points.

Rough; Vardy being out i had double Lei mid in Barnes and Perez vs Norwich and they got me 4 points. Liverpool in the rough section, and worst part with that is not the lack of points as everyone have triple anyway but the fact the only time in that game i was hoping for points was that pass from VVD to Robertson, that would have just been lovely.

Son -> Fernandes (10) paid off. 45 points & up to 74k OR, my highest of the season.

      Pope & Fernandez giving me a tidy 18 points from a 0-0.

Vardy & Gomez no show wasn't ideal, as was a Stephens 0, Ings & Williams off the bench & Trent & Salah blanking.

Never been inside the top 100k at this stage of the season, really pleased with the progress so far.

      56 (-8) points

Rough: no shows from Vardy, Rico and Gomez. Transferred Cathcart (6) for Pereira (2) for -4.

Smooth: Pope, Doherty, Fernandes and Jota all scoring double digits.

      GW26 266k - GW27 175k - GW28 118k

Smooth - had 11 players playing (before teamsheets announced) and Possible 12th with Williams. That shoudlhave given big advantage vs those that didn't plan for the BGW.

Rough - saw the Vardy news at 18.50 but was out of house so only had mobile app to work with and a slow connection too.
Looked at Long as an option to repleave Vardy (Free hit) but decided on Jota BUT....somehow in the rush I left Long in. So now I need to take a hit to correct the Long mistake.

The hasty plan had been Jiminez/Jota double up this week, then Jiminez out this GW to free up funds. That plan is now ruined.

with half my team with either no game or dropped i decided to WC, i ended up on 50pts which i'm delighted with considering i had triple Pool and a Salah(c) fail, its also double the score of what i would have got if i did nothing 🙂

      WC team

      Pope
      TAA, Saiss, Lascelles, Taylor
      Salah, Bruno, Richarlison
      Firmino, Jimmy, Ings

Smooth: Only 4 of my team (Fernandes 10, Fernandez 8, Jimenez 7 and Aurier 7) scored more than 2 points, the other 7 only adding a further 10 points between them.
But that proved to be enough for a 24k rise, and I'm into the top 100k for the first time this season!

Aurier was auto-subbed from my bench thanks to Vardy's no-show.

      All rough here:
Had to sort out my defense (Lundstram, Rico, Kelly) and get rid of Aguero for the blank. Got in Saiss for Kelly, and pondered all week on who to get for Aguero (for a hit) between Jimenez, Jota or Vardy. Ended up bringing in Vardy on friday afternoon, only to find out 10 mins before deadline that he wasnt' playing. So doubled upo on Liverpool defence with Robertson in for Lundstram (for another hit), so I could field 11.

The result: 28 points (-8) and dropped from 46k to 72k

Ok, one smooth: Bruno Fernandes that I got 2 weeks ago for Son. My only player who to score more than 2 points

      Rough.
Vardy no show, -8 points hits bringing Abraham in then out.

But now he's back up to 21st, thanks to his second successive pair of double-digit hauls from Wolves players Jota and Doherty - he is also top of the Wolves fan league.

Rough rough rough..... Here is the roll call.

      Vardy no show
      Ings benched
So bad too many to mention - only 1 return and only 3 players scored 2 or more.

      Schmeichel 2
      TAA 1, Robertson 1, LASCELLES 6!!!, Williams 1, Boly 0
      Salah (c) 4, Traore 2, Dendonker 0
      Ings 1

Alright first ever Rough/Smooth post: decided to fire fight this week and transferred out Reina (don’t ask) and Lundstram, finally, for Tim Krul and Doherty partly because of gameweek 31. In itself that is 20 points gained but along with a long awaited Ward Prowse return, Jimenez winner, Vardy’s benching meaning I got a Kiko Femenia clean sheet off my third bench spot having parked him there throughout his injury, and Bruno captain gave me 66 points and a 6k gameweek rank. Have been treading water around 200k since GW4 and this week took me up to 80k and back in it with my WC, bench boost and free hit still intact. Turning point!

Planned to being in Doherty this week a few GWs ago.

Last minute I opted for Boly instead so could bank money awaiting GW29 news.

Missed a 12 point haul, got 0 instead.

Decided not to take a -4 on Pope two weeks ago, now 15 points worse off.

Periera was my other transfer in, double pool defence, captained Salah, kept faith with Vardy, own Ings.

      Not a good week!

      Doherty - 12 points (1 goal, 1 assist, 2 bonus points)
      Jimenez - 7 points (1 goal, 1 bonus point)

These 3 players got 63% of my points. Overall, I gained 25 points.

Is this team G2G for GW29. Is it worth saving a transfer? alternatively could use 1 FT to get rid of Digne or Traore or a -4 to get rid of both

    Mccarthy
    Stevens* TAA Saiss
    Mane Salah Maddison KDB
    Ings DCL Jimenez

    subs: Gaz,Traore*,Lascellles,Digne*

players highlighted with a a star are currently injury doubts but I think they should be ok for the weekend.

I'm on mobile yes but I find it exactly the same on desktop. Thread titles seem to randomly appear half way down the page amongst a load of other no related posts and the replies underneath have no relevance to the thread title.

I've emailed support several times asking if they could change this to a proper forum with clearly defined thread titles like how FISO do it. They said over a year ago that they would be making changes but they still haven't.

Exactly same on phone whether you click mobile or desktop? Same on laptop, tablet on more than one browser? Same if you start up FPL with nothing running and only site running in your browser? Was it always giving you problems? Popup blocker enabled/ disabled? It's not the site if it works for everyone else. Try Firefox, Dolphin, Opera to see if it's any better.

I have the same tab as well but this doesn't get rid of the issues Ive described. For example, there is a thread created by Geoff in green colour entitled gameweek 28 rough with the smooth and he is asking how people's gameweeks went. This however seems to appear randomly in the middle of a load of posts (both on mobile and desktop and on different browsers) The direct post underneath is a relevant reply but then the next post underneath that is somebody asking to rate their team.

There is no proper structure at all to this forum making it really difficult to follow. It's terrible

With just 10 gameweeks left what takes priority in your FPL transfer plans. Is it players who are in a great run of form - the likes of Calvert-Lewin or Fernandes, or do you prioritise those with the best fixture run - the likes of Aubameyang, the Liverpool attacking double up and Vardy?

    1. jason_ni

You'd have to say that Auba has both fixtures and form.
For me, its a factor of both, but each transfer is important at this stage. Also have to factor in the FA cup games this week, to see the picture for 31, that will impact any future transfers as well, so will be waiting to later in the week before doing any early transfers, regardless of price movements

      Form.

So-called easy fixtures go out of the window when teams are scrapping for survival as shown by Norwich and Watford in GW28.

Yeah I totally agree with this. The last 10 gameweeks are when we see things won and lost. See teams hit the beach or get relegated etc. So I always trust form more at this stage, but with clubs like leicester needing the points it makes you question the whether we should rule out the likes of Vardy when the fixtures are nice

Mixture of the two will be keeping inform players including Calvert-Lewin, Fernandes and KDB with poor fixtures, but getting rid of players with better fixtures like Stephens, Ings, Traore and VVD for DGWer's.

Auba has both but an awkward price, depends if you wanna go the Bruno-KDB-Mo-Mane way then he is almost impossible to get.

I've got Auba-KDB-Mo-Mane and couldn't get Bruno in for Traore so will have to make do with Sarr instead. Other than that, wolves double Fwds and Doherty looks good. Not keen on Leicester anymore.

Hi Sam, the most important factor going forward for me will be competitive appetite. Which teams have something to fight for? Which are fighting for survival? Avoid teams with nothing to lose and nothing to fight for.

This is a good philosophy for the end of season, its been proven to be true.

However, the problem is everyone has something to play for. Mid table doesn't exist. Liverpool, Leicester and City each still need 4-5 wins to achieve their objectives. Chelsea down to Everton are all still fighting for champions League football, or at least Europa League football. Palace and Southampton have the twin motivations of European football AND avoiding relegation! And Newcastle down are all trying to avoid the drop. Things will shake out in a few weeks, but right now every team should be motivated.

Let's be honest we all know it's a mixture of both and transfers should be taken on a case-by-case basis. City have tough fixtures but they can beat anyone so are the fixtures really tough? Newcastle have great fixtures but they are crap so are the fixtures really good? Not so clear cut is it. Imo though there are teams that have both form and fixtures and these should take priority over the ones with doubts - so Wolves over Leicester, for example.

Who knows! We either play attempting to defend or attack - there isn’t a middle ground right now. At home it’s normally attack, away it’s normally defend. I think there is potential for sure. The improvements are actually really good when you look at Mourinho Vs poch this season, but because the performances are often so poor there is a lot of negativity around spurs. Do I think we’ll get fourth, no, do I think we could go on a run, I’m not sure. Are we better when Dele plays with Bergwijn and Moura 100%. Let’s see I think Mourinho will do well next year after the summer transfer window

this stage of the season becomes more about attacking returns.
Teams that need 3 pts to stay up or get into Europe as 0-0s aren't enough.
So form takes over fixtures. Particularly FPL form rather than PL form.

When we talk about form is that just the goals and assist Do the stats have to be good or not how important are stats like shots, shots in box, shot on target etc. A player can still play well with no end product.

Always form over fixtures, even more so at the business end.
First spot the teams fighting for something & others on the beach - Palace & Newcastle & soon Spurs are on the beach
Once Liverpool have sown up the league they’ll focus on the cup(s)
Arsenal only have the league now
      Them & Wolves are peaking
Leicester will go into their shell & try not to lose any more games - watch for clean sheets
Southampton have ran out of steam
      Just my thoughts

Good players always knew to pick form over fixtures. its the bad managers who kneejerk on fixtures like bringing lei assets with no form at all. Granted they will score vs hapless Avl but nothing more. FYI Auba has both form and fixtures. DCL Jim Auba look most inform but those with Ings should play him vs newc as at home Soton score well

    McCarthy
    TAA - VVD - Saiss

Biggest concern is Maddisons lack of points, but home to villa prob still worth keeping.

Obviously whoever hauls at the weekend is going to be the big talking point/reaction transfer on here on the Monday.

      But other factors;

      - He has a guaranteed GW31.
      - Good price for a 4th Midfielder - especially when the other options aren't getting good returns currently (Grealish, Barnes, Zaha, Traore)
      - Funds needed to get the likes of Kun, Auba, KdB ahead of the potential DGW29.
