Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Double Gameweek 29?

The transformation of Gameweek 29 into a Double Gameweek has added further complication to the latest captaincy debate.

With the focus previously on Liverpool, Fantasy Premier League managers have been forced to consider Arsenal and Manchester City options for the armband with each side playing twice.

We’ve got over the individual statistics for key candidates in recent weeks and compared them against the defences of their upcoming opponents to find the out who the best option is.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season or a monthly package can access it in full.

Captain Poll

The original Gameweek 29 captain poll

We effectively ran two captain polls ahead of Gameweek 29 as the Double prefix was not added until late on Tuesday night.

As you can see from the table above, it was Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) who took a comfortable lead when this was a simple single Gameweek, having delivered in each of his last four home matches in a row.

Sadio Mané (£12.4m) was also up there in third place with Bournemouth coming to Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) completing the Liverpool contingent in the top-five, which was rounded off by Jamie Vardy (£9.8m).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.0m) fixture against West Ham was good enough for him to accrue 25.6% and claim second place, with three goals in his last two at home.

The new Double Gameweek 29 poll

However, the addition of Arsenal and Manchester City’s midweek meeting at the Etihad Stadium has proved enough to completely change the dynamic of the Double Gameweek 29 captaincy debate.

As you can see, Aubameyang has now stolen top spot, increasing his share by 24.2 percentage points now that he will be playing twice.

There was a similar boost for Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) as he rose from 1.8% backing to 20.1% and second place – although the Belgian is now an injury doubt.

Those shifts saw Salah drop to third place with a still-respectable 11.9% backing for the armband, while Alexander-Arnold remained stable in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Mané and Vardy dropped out as differential options with Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) and Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) taking their place but with no more than 3% support each.

    As a life long Arsenal fan, I can clear up any worries about this week's DGW. There is no point what so ever bringing in Arsenal players this week as Arsenal will not get anything against City. In fact, I highly suspect they will not score. Therefore, please consider Arsenal as a single GW. City players are also highly unpredictable with Pep as a manager and also most likely nothing to play for in the league and a very important champion league match against Real Madrid coming up. Save your free transfers and chips and build towards GW31.

      You may be right (though City defence is hardly an immovable object) but West Ham at home is a great fixture for attacking assets in particular.

        Trust me Arsenal will not get anything at City away. I've just looked through the City players and non of them consistently play every game. Complete waste of time building for this DGW.

      Depends on your chip strategy. For those of us FH31 and WC straight after, makes sense to attack this DGW

      It’s really individual to each team.
      If you’ve only got 2/3 GW31 players, probably best to FH that week, and that allows you to get some City/Arsenal players in this week.

      As Greek says, City defence, especially with no Laporte, isn’t very strong.

          For a BGW? Yeah, that’ll be the difference to most who go with 8/9/10 players - not a lot to be gained.

          Opens a lot more possibilities in a DGW, including budget which won’t be near needed in 31.

            • 4 Years

            Even in a DGW I think. If I BB in DGW37, most of the core players will be the same as the free hit ones - there would be a few downgrades to accommodate a playing bench but I don't think it will be a huge difference.

      Martial won’t be benched just because Ighalo scored a goal against a lower league side. Similar things have been said about Greenwood earlier in the season in Europa Lwague games and hasn’t ever impacted Martial’s place in the team. He is more nailed than people tend to think.

                  Antonio looks a great pick, if WHU can keep playing like they did last weekend.

                  I can’t possibly triple up on WHU though! Fabianski and Ogbonna have been perma-benched since the double....can’t believe holding them actually paid off.

    So, i think this is the best strategy for people, who have FH, WC, BB and South/City/Villa/Ars GK
    Stevens->City def
    Richarlison->Leicester mid
    DCL->Vardy/MUN striker(no ofc, haha)/Abraham(Giroud)
    Digne->MU def/...
    Cantwell->idk who, depends on money i'll have

    There's no Pool assets, i know, it was my first draft, but if they beat Atletico i think rotation and lack of motivation will eat them. I also think 'lucky Liverpool season' already ended and they can't beat every opponent in last minutes GW by GW, like they did in the past.

      I believe KDB is an injury concern

        Yes I am aware of that. Which is why I’m also considering Pepe and Mahrez. But not sure.

      Jonny's spot when fit, not sure on length of injury

        This. Don’t think it’s long term enough to risk Vinny.

      If Jonny confirmed out long enough (read until GW32) then I would pick him. 4.2 nailed Wolves def.

    I remember watching a guy in YT who said he'd take punches in public if Ighalo scores more than 2 goals this season.
