Chelsea squad self-isolate as Hudson-Odoi tests positive for coronavirus

The spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout Premier League personnel increased in the early hours of Friday morning, with Chelsea the latest club to be hit.

The Blues announced via a statement on their website that Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) had tested positive for the virus and that their training facility would undergo a partial closure.

Crucially, in line with government health guidelines, Chelsea personnel who had recent close contact with Hudson-Odoi, which includes the full first-team squad, will now also enter into a period of self-isolation.

“Chelsea men’s team player Callum Hudson-Odoi had a positive test result for Coronavirus returned this evening. Chelsea personnel who had recent close contact with the player in the men’s team building will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. These will include initially the full men’s team squad, coaching staff and a number of backroom staff.” – Chelsea statement

Hudson-Odoi becomes the first Premier League player to be announced as having contracted COVID-19 but the virus had already hit Arsenal late on Thursday.

The Gunners announced that manager Mikel Arteta had tested positive for COVID-19 and that their full senior squad would also self-isolate.

Shortly after, Brighton confirmed that their Gameweek 30 meeting with Arsenal was postponed.

No announcement has been made about Chelsea’s scheduled fixture with Aston Villa, although this is expected to be postponed as well.

The football community now awaits the results of an emergency Premier League meeting on Friday morning.

The league had officially stated on Thursday evening that all matches would go ahead as planned this weekend, although this was less than an hour before the Arteta news broke.

In response to that, the Premier League’s hand was clearly forced and an emergency meeting scheduled.

What to do if you think you might have coronavirus*

If you think you might have coronavirus or you’ve been in close contact with someone who has it:

  • stay at home and avoid close contact with other people
  • do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital
  • use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service to find out what to do next

The 111 coronavirus service will tell you if you need to continue to stay at home (self-isolate) or if you need medical help.

I wonder if they suspend it and decide to play it later in the year what will happen to the players who's contracts are up at the end of June. I assume they could sign contract extensions for a few months.

How long does it take a healthy person to fight the virus to a point where they can't pass it on any more?

2 weeks is the time it takes for the virus to show itself if they have it. It doesn't take 2 weeks for them to fight it. If you do recover you can still carry it and pass it on.

Of they postpone the season we'd have like a 3month gameweek.

    Imagine the price changes

Everyone will probably be red flagged, so no price changes.

Red flags don't freeze prices. Removal of flags do.

They'd have to give them orange flags anyway

Why do so many people think you can just declare a team champions and finish the league. They haven’t won it. You can’t just go off the current league standings it would be completely unfair, some teams have had easier games/more home games than others. There’s no chance they just go off current standings and declare Liverpool champions and write off the league.

They’ll finish league seasons across Europe yeah. Once football can be played again that will be priority (likely Behind closed doors).

Chaos to cancel seasons & they won’t want clubs taking legal action due to revenue losses.

In that case, is there a playoff with city and pool for the league?

I think two things need to be taken off the table

Ending the season the way it is and giving out the title, Europe spots and relegation spots

Null and voiding the whole season

Let's see what the PL say later. We all want football and when it's safe to do so, games will go ahead (probably BCD to begin with)

Govt has got this right, I reckon. You can’t ask people to start isolating now, for three months, the elderly cannot be on their own for that length of time – it’s no small ask. It’s right to follow the advice of medical professionals that are shaping UK strategy.

Almost certainly looks like the Euro's will be cancelled now which gives them a couple of months in the summer to extend the season into. The most sensible thing would be to postpone the season for 3-4 weeks, give all the clubs affected a chance to self isolate and then finish the season playing behind closed doors. But when is anything the authorities do sensible.

That would be the most sensible thing to do, but is it going to happen. They may also decide to continue behind closed doors and cancel only matches that must be postponed (like Arsenal, Chelsea Leicester). That is the other solution on the table imo. Remember that "the show must go on (even if the circus actor dies)"...

          A) refund stakes for everyone. (Doesnt matter are you 1st or 40th.)

I administer a league and am facing the same question. I am leading towards cancelling and refunding. Anything else will be arbitrary and unfair

If the season is postponed there is no problem. Season won't be cancelled, but the only sensible thing to do in that scenario is A.

If they say fixtures to be played at clubs’ own discretion that could be interesting.

It would be a total abdication of responsibility. Since the government has failed to act so far, the PL should make its own call.

Reminder that as the UK is a modern country with actual worker's rights, its not possible for the PL to just unilaterally force ground staff, training staff, stewards, the police and everyone else involved in the organization of PL games to 'just play the games in the summer'.. all those people involved have families and will have holidays planned with their loved ones and have no incentive to give up their rights just so Pool can get a PL title.

Of course they could come to agreements of compensation or employ stand ins in most positions but it's a logistical nightmare, calling it off is the sensible decision.

I think they’d find away / casual employers... I mean I’d say a lot of NHS nurses has holidays planned over Easter that they will no longer be able to take.

You have to feel for the premier league players not being able to go on their end of season holidays to Dubai though

Those people in NHS have separate agreements about holidays in case of situations like this to ensure hospitals and ERs are properly staffed for health and safety reasons. They get their holidays at a later point. I'm literally in the same situation myself having to cancel my Easter holidays

Making a PL game go ahead isn't a similar situation at all.

This is the argument the government have to delay cancelling pubic events until a week or two - people will stay in to start with. But eventually get bored and go out when the pandemic is at it’s peak.
Ridiculous though as it’s clearly spiralling out of control.

The awerness of the public at large is the most important factor of containment. In Asia was exactly what happened, people knew this was serious and self protected themselves and their families by immediately changing behaviours and routines. In Hong Kong the next day all restaurants were empty!

In the UK when you have the prime minister saying pretty blatant crap and vast majority of people saying "we will be fine". Just the same type of blind ignorance of Brexit only this time chickens are coming home to rooster a lot faster!

Boris Johnson in 2012: "The real hero of Jaws is the mayor, a wonderful politician. A gigantic fish is eating all your constituents and he decides to keep the beach open. There was one laudable thing about him, and that was his refusal to give way to hysteria.

OK, in that instance, he was wrong but in principle we need more politicians like the mayor."

I have already taken a -4. I have Alonso, Aubamyang and Saka in my team. I was planing to use F.H. in GW 31 but now if league is posponed then schedules out of the window and anything possible.

If games go ahead this week but there are any more cancelations then using chip may be a good idea? Or could it become even more valuable later? Discus...........

Do not hit that button unless it is the absolute last minute and you have had assurances certain games are going ahead. It will be very useful later and there is a great chance of no football this weekend.

Games will be cancelled after the deadline if it's going ahead.

It would be a massive waste, in case the season is finished later.

Rumours out of Premier League HQ that officials are set to make a statement that only games with infected players / managers will be postponed, with the remainder to be played behind closed doors!!

Yeah. CHO, Arteta and Leicester players are only ones currently "known" to have it, there are probably much more of them that are not officialy diagnose, but have it, so no point in partial GW

Yeh the nearly 10% death rate in Italy wants a word with them.

Funny it's just like brexit. Morons form 2 extreme camps, the end of the world crowd and the is just flu crowd and the reasonable people in the middle get trampled

The symptoms are not as bad as flu apparently https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-51858845

But the spread rate and death rate is obviously much worse.

I'm still going to the pub later, but if I hear coughing it might be time to leave...

Update from each country we are in?

                      In Vietnam.

Schools have been closed since the beginning of Tet (Also Chinese new year January 21st or so). Scheduled to open Monday for upper grades but no shocker if they remain closed.

Border with China closed long ago

Chinese, Koreans and Italians not allowed in.

Euros and Uk'ers have had 15 day visas on arrival scrapped for the time being.

Swimming pool in my apartment has been closed since Tet but gym open, which seems odd if pool closed.

A couple weeks ago security at my apartment began holding thermometers up to our heads upon entrance on a daily basis.

On fb group page for HCmC has been reported a spa isn't allowing foreigners in and heard about a pool hall doing the same. Not alarmed but keeping an eye on that possibly developing

40+ cases only so far, no deaths and almost half have already moved on healthy again. The rest in different stages of isolation/quarantine

90 percent of the natives are wearing masks

One spa and a pool hall have refused Foreigners but remain open for Vietnamese.

A couple reported being asked to leave a guest house cuz they are foreign.

Not too worried about this but it's sent up yellow flags so will be keeping my eyes and ears open to see if this kind of thing increases

Island of Koh Samui, Gulf of Thailand

So far, no reported cases of the virus on the island. (fingers crossed)

Schools have been closed since last week until late April but that is the normal school holidays here, Thai New Year/Songkran Festival is mid April, the usual big parties/concerts etc for the New Year will likely be cancelled. The Full Moon Parties on neighbouring island of Koh Pha Ngan have been cancelled.

Still quite a number of tourists in the resorts, I would say mostly British and Australian, though much quieter than usual/previous years and no doubt the hotels.resorts/private villas for rent will see or have seen a fairly large amount of cancellations/postponements.

I drive around the island most days and visit several resorts on most days and you wouldn't know there was a global health problem, some people wearing masks but not that many.

The expat bars I go to still have their regulars, I was in a couple last night. Don't know about the bars/restaurants in the main tourists towns/areas I don't tend to visit them very often.

Overall there's no sense of panic or fear, certainly at the moment, perhaps being on a small island in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand has meant less exposure and there have been very few Chinese or Korean tourists in the last two months.

Just a tad! Very much a tourist orientated island with around a million visitors a year, lived here for 16 years and still a great place to live with tourists centred around a couple of main areas, lots of great beaches away from the tourist areas.

Any other Auba owners thinking of replacing with Callum Wilson for this week and next? Kinda prefer him to Wood and already have 3 Wolves players so want to avoid taking hits there

My team is a bit of a mess, was going to save the FH and WC.
