How FPL transfers and chips will be affected by coronavirus suspension

The Premier League have released official confirmation of how Fantasy Premier League will operate over the next few weeks.

The top-flight of English football has been suspended until April 4 with all matches from Gameweeks 30 and 31 postponed from their original scheduled dates.

That decision was taken after Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Chelsea midfielder Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

With no matches between now and Gameweek 32, Fantasy managers had been wondering what this meant for their transfers, chips and other decisions made in the build-up to Gameweek 30.

The Premier League has now moved to answer all those questions.

You can read the information published on their site below:

What happens to Gameweek deadlines?

The deadlines for Gameweek 30 (Saturday, 14 March, 11:30 GMT) and Gameweek 31 (Friday, 20 March, 19:00 GMT) will remain at their scheduled times. Any activity managers undertake ahead of each deadline will apply to that Gameweek.

Given all fixtures have been postponed for these Gameweeks, managers will earn zero points for their players.

For managers who took a points hit for transfers, their Gameweek scores will reflect the points they lost.

What about Head-to-Head leagues?

In Head-to-Head league matches, if neither manager made transfers incurring points deductions that Gameweek then the matches will be drawn and managers will earn one point each.

What about the FPL Cup?

If both managers incurred no points hits through transfers, their scores will be zero and their FPL Cup match will be decided by a virtual coin toss.

What about transfers, Wildcards and chips?

Managers must also be aware that any transfers made, or Wildcards or chips played in a Gameweek where all the fixtures are postponed will not be reinstated.

Please note that managers can cancel any Triple Captain or Bench Boost chip they have played ahead of a Gameweek deadline. However, this does not apply to transfers they have made, or Wildcards or Free Hit chips played.

What happens to the postponed fixtures?

It is the Premier League’s intention to reschedule the postponed fixtures when it is safe to do so.

Points scored in these fixtures will apply to the Gameweek in which the fixtures are played and not to Gameweek 30 or Gameweek 31.

What happens next?

In this fast-moving environment, the Premier League will provide further updates when appropriate.

These are exceptional circumstances and we appreciate the understanding of FPL managers while the situation evolves.

Doesn't make sense. If the fixture is postponed, the GW should be postponed. What are we going to do with a blank GW?...

I'm going to benefit from not having made any transfers, but I agree this doesn't make a lot of sense. It's clear they've just taken the path of least resistance in terms of work.

Maybe they get advertising money based on page hits so could be a financial decision to keep transfer activity going even if minimal?

What if more fixtures are postponed? Will we have quintaple GW38? It can also be that the FPL is coded in the way it doesn't have a lot of flexibility to changes in the GW terms though, like adding GW39...

See my post in the next page - as things stand, if all matches are rescheduled for May or June or whenever, it's going to be all blanks (or at best some singles) until a 7 or 8xGW38.

So BGW31 might not be a BGW after all, it could be a different GW and so could the DGWs.

It’s a right old mess - has Ben Crellin made a statement yet?

There is zero chance of any sport until end of April at the earliest. Number of cases only going up in next 2 weeks so more and more footballers/coaches and friends/family thereof will catch it and whole teams will be in isolation

Why leave the gameweeks open for transfers??

This is quite ridiculous. If it's postponed then follow suit and postpone FPL. This gives an unfair advantages to some over others.

Why didn't they just delete GWs 30 and 31 and the next GW that'll be played will automatically be GW30. The current decision makes no sense to me, especially as the league's suspension is likely to be prolonged even further.

Gutted about this as I'm on a Wildcard this week (seemed sensible at the time as a way to get a good team for BGW31 and beyond) - got no idea what would be a sensible squad to pick.

GW38 could see the biggest points tally in FPL history!

It's going to be such a lottery - people with 100+ captain hauls vs. people whose captain pulled a hamstring in the first 10 minutes.

And countless other permutations like that.

Not sure I agree with this decision. It does feel like the path of least work.

My larger gripe is that this changes a lot about future planning. I chose to bring in Saka and Aubamayang rather than bring in two more GW31 players because I reckoned on the greater Arsenal points in their DGW and would risk only having 7 or 8 players in GW31. Now I have no idea what to do as I have no idea if and when teams will play 2 or 3 times in a week. It benefits me to know if City are playing 3 times one week and United 3 times the week after.

The way this is working, and it isn't the Fantasy League's fault, benefits those with chips hugely. The bench boost where you might have had a couple of players playing twice, or ensured that more did if playing a wildcard the week before, could end up with a whole squad playing 3 games in a week and less reluctance to keep those players as it is likely that all clubs will have that rather than some, some of which one wouldn't go near. Rather than people putting bottom 6 club players in their squads to use their bench boost, it might be easily possible to play 3 players from 5 top clubs all of which will double or triple.

My understanding of this is that I can make a transfer now (say Pereira to Doherty) leaving me with no FT left. Then save a transfer in GW31. Then I have 2FT in GW32? So basically transfers are staying the same... it's just that there are no fixtures.

        Correct?

          Yes and no, surely?
Effectively, since the beginning of the last "window", you can make 3 FTs before the next time a game is played. You have the GW30, GW31 and GW32 transfers.
For those who have already used a transfer this week, your new player won't be playing against the opposition you thought they would play against next. Therefore, if you bought a player yesterday but it was only going to be for 2 weeks, you wasted a transfer. Mini-leagues are likely to be won by the person near the top of the league who has their chips still in hand.

Yes, but this all assumes that GW32 doesn't get postponed...

Given how unlikely it is for sport to resume in April, looks like it will be either blanks or at best some single GWs all the way up to a septuple or octuple GW38.

Some chips will not have an optimum time to be used as such, if there's only one multiple GW.

If UEFA are sensible and cancel the Euros then domestic leagues can play May and June. Only solution possible IMHO.

Don't see the point of using any FTs in order to plan two months in advance. There's no way to know who's going to be in form (or even fit) then.

But if you don't use them they're wasted anyway. So might as well use them to get rid of some deadwood if you've got any, like Rico or Kelly or the such

This is definitely the laziest approach from FPL. I'm guessing it's just too difficult for them to re-program the game/move game weeks. It's almost as if it's all locked in place and they can't move anything.

But they have changed deadlines for GW's in the past and they are prolonging and shortening GWs on a regular basis. Shouldn't be too difficult to change current GW32 to GW30 and so on.
