No Premier League football before April 30 but plans remain to finish the season

There will be no professional football played in England until the end of April at the earliest, the game’s governing bodies announced on Thursday.

A commitment to finishing the 2019/20 domestic campaign was reiterated, however, with the original June 1 deadline extended “indefinitely” to accommodate any outstanding fixtures.

Those were the two main takeaway points for Fantasy managers from the meeting between the Premier League and other administrative parties earlier today, although, with so much still unknown surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the usual disclaimers apply.

In a joint statement, the Football Association, the Premier League, EFL, the women’s professional game, the PFA and the LMA said:

We are united in our commitment to finding ways of resuming the 2019/20 football season and ensuring all domestic and European club league and cup matches are played as soon as it is safe and possible to do so.

We have collectively supported UEFA in postponing Euro 2020 to create space in the calendar to ensure domestic and European club league and cup matches have an increased opportunity to be played and, in doing so, maintain the integrity of each competition.

The FA’s Rules and Regulations state that “the season shall terminate not later than the 1 June” and “each competition shall, within the limit laid down by The FA, determine the length of its own playing season”.

However, The FA’s Board has agreed for this limit to be extended indefinitely for the 2019/20 season in relation to Professional Football.

Additionally, we have collectively agreed that the professional game in England will be further postponed until no earlier than 30 April.

The progress of COVID-19 remains unclear and we can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority.

We will continue to follow Government advice and work collaboratively to keep the situation under review and explore all options available to find ways of resuming the season when the conditions allow.

As things stand in Fantasy Premier League, everything up to and including Gameweek 35 would be affected.

Whether FPL retains the current Gameweek deadlines is another question, however, and there will surely be a further announcement off the back of Thursday’s developments.

So far as we know, the Gameweek 31 deadline – which is set for Friday at 19:00 GMT – will pass as scheduled, with no fixtures taking place but the usual rules surrounding free transfers, points hits and head-to-head scores still applying.

An international break would have followed anyway, so we can likely expect some decision from FPL towers long before Gameweek 32 was originally intended to get underway on April 4.

The two options would be to shift the Gameweek deadlines back to when play resumes (whenever that may be) or to keep as is, thus creating three bumper Gameweeks – including a massive Gameweek 38 – at the season’s end.

That last, increasingly unlikely scenario relies on play actually getting back underway at the start of May, too, which there must be still some doubt about given the projected spread of COVID-19.

Further disruption will potentially occur, then, before we see a ball kicked again.

It buys them valuable breathing space & a number of extra weeks in which they can gradually start socialising the concept of null & void if necessary

Im prepared for WC GW 37 and BB GW 38 but thats just stupid.
Why FPL is doing those blanks GWs? They can add a game in a GW or change deadline (from Sat to Fri few times) so why not change next deadline to April 30 (and than further if needed)

Is it risky using your GW30 and GW31 FT's now to strengthen your team in preparation for the restart of the season (whenever that is) given that an option stated in the article is " to shift the Gameweek deadlines back to when play resumes (whenever that may be)" ?

This s basically a holding statement to buy time. If they announce the season is over then I'm pretty sure there will significant knock-on financial implications in terms of broadcast contracts etc. Can't play until an actual vaccine is available, IMO.

Sounds right. We have a virus, which is not seasonal, is highly contagious and can re-infect after you've already had it (i.e. limited immunisation is gained if you've already had it) - the only way the risk is reduced is if there is a vaccine. Otherwise it will just keep circulating the population. The isolation policies adopted all over the world are to try and spread the infection rate over a longer time-period - isolation doesn't offer a cure or remove the threat, only a vaccine can do that.

getting the Coronavirus death rate under control would suffice IMO. Up to 16,000 people a year die of the Common Flu and the Premier League still takes place every year.

Yup - but the reason it's only 16k is because there is a flu vaccine...until there is a Corona vaccine the upper limit of mortality is effectively 2-3% of the total population.

Aye and if you consider reinfection that percentage could shoot through the roof. You may survive the first bout of it but may not be so lucky on the next round.

What is the source that shows you can be re-infected? So far it has been unclear, and they’ve just assumed from knowledge about other viruses that you gain immunity. Have heard about cases in which people with the disease have tested negative, only to fall back ill again

I see. It says that it’s not fully understood, hence it can’t be said for sure wether the patient were in fact RE-infected - or if they never got completely rid of the virus in the first place. Will be interesting to see, too early to rule out anything.

On that assumption and it's roughty a year before a mass vaccine is available are restaurants/pubs going to be closed for the same period?

That is a distinct possibility. Restaurants can adapt (to some level) by offering take-out etc., but pubs will have a big problem. The only other way, I would suggest, that this can improve before a vaccine is developed is if a very effective, cheap and fast test (similar to a breathalyzer test) can be developed, which will allow people to socialise at a reduced risk of infecting others. Not sure if it will take faster to develop the test or the vaccine, though.

At the minute there are 230,658 cases worldwide, with 9,390 of those unfortunately resulting in fatalities which is a ~4.1% mortality rate (based on fatalities vs. confirmed cases)

But the 4.1% also assumes 100% of the 144,397 active cases join the other 86,261 recoveries in returning to health

There are noticeable differences between countries though - Germany for example have over 5x the cases of the U.K (14,366 vs 2,692), yet also have under a third of the fatalities (43 vs 137)

China have a population of over 1.5 billion people, who have been exposed to this for much longer than any other country (since Nov’19), yet their cases stand at ~80,000 with fatalities at ~3,000

Italy’s death toll (2,978), whilst utterly tragic and growing at a terrifying rate - has an average age of 79.5, a median age of 81 (80.5), and 99% of fatalities had at least one or more other underlying health conditions or illnesses...

The next few days may see large growth in cases & fatalities in Europe unfortunately, as the majority of the countries implementing shut downs & social distancing have only been in place for 5-7 days

I think the paper is from a while back, probably missing the last few weeks /months of data

It was published on Friday 28th February, so presume the data used was from at least weeks before that

But the fatality rate looks to be varying, in some cases wildly, between countries anyways

I think the League Cup should be removed from 20/21 season so that fixtures are a little less congested next season which could potentially allow for a later start date for the 20/21 season and with the EUROs moving to 2021 it means that this season can finish later than usual (mid-July time - which is when the EUROs would have finished).

Do you not understand how mathematical probabilities work? Of course it isnt BINARY. Either something is possible, impossible (those are the far ends of the probability spectrum) and everything in between you just conveniently ignore? Please.

Over 99% is as close to impossible as one can get and a number so significant that you'd bet your own life on it happening (Roll the 100 sided die once, if it lands on 100 you die, anything else, you live).

Again, you're not understanding how math terms work. You using the layman's definition of 'probable' to weaken the word. In a mathematical context, its powerful because it is, wait for it, BASED ON MATHEMATICAL MODELING, not guesses.

Answer: The likelihood is so small as to be infinitesimal. So, in reality, no, there isn't. We make decisions and assumptions in daily life all the time based on numbers far lower than this all the time.

Definition of infinitesimal, "an indefinitely small quantity; a value approaching zero". To be a pedantic, stick in the mud weirdo isn't helping your cause.

Think aliens landing in your backyard while getting hit by lightning as a great white shark emerges from your birdbath to eat you at the same time type of longshot.

It's not what I think, but I believe in numbers.
Did you honestly think I pulled that number of greater than 99 pct. out of my own arse?

                        Hahahahaha!!

It's from a statistical probability outcome site from minds far brighter than you or I (or anyone we know) and has been iterated on and perfected over the course of many years. Because the season is shut down for now, so is the model's access, but trust me when I say its ABOVE a 99 percent probability that Pool were winning the title this year.

Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of sporting history will know Liverpool were anything but certain to win the league unfortunately - it was improbable that they would blow it, but not impossible - which is the point Steve Howey was making - you can't award a trophy when the criteria for winning it haven't been met

                        - In the same way AC Milan were not certain to have won the Champions League Final despite being 3-0 up
                        - In the same way Leicester were not certain to blow their 5000/1 shot at winning the premier league title
                        - In the same way Devon Loch was not certain to win the 1956 grand national despite being miles clear on the final straight
                        - In the same way as Australia weren't certain to win the 1981 Ashes despite being 1-0 up after two tests
                        - In the same way that Paul Lawrie wasn't certain to lose the 1999 British Open despite being 10 strokes down at the start of the fourth round
                        - In the same way that Lasse Viren wasn't certain to lose (let alone set a world record) the 10,000m when he fell on the 12th lap in the 1972 Olympics
                        - In the same way that the first division trophy in 1958 wasn't a certainty due to a horrific & tragic freak travel accident that struck one of the greatest Man Utd teams in history
                        - In the same way that the 24 billion to one chance of 32 consecutive reds coming up in an American Casino in 1943 was possible
                        - In the same way that Christian Pulisic wasn't certain to be WORLD CLASS after a hattrick at Burnley

The list could go on & on... and on... and on...

They shouldn’t give the title to Liverpool. I’d be surprised if many Liverpool fans wanted the title this way either. It would never be accepted socially.

It would be a bit ridiculous to award them a trophy when they technically haven't won it yet. The only way would be if the league is cancelled but the current standings apply - but that's way more serious for relegation and CL places.

Personally I think it makes most sense to make sure that this season finishes, and 2020-21 can always be delayed/shortened/modified. I don't really understand the approach of voiding this season just to ensure that 2020-21 starts as normal considering how much is at stake from this season.

Maybe they would have won it, maybe they’d have bottled it. But you can’t give them titles based on assumptions. Man Utd probably would have won Europa League so do we get given it just based on that? They need to be consistent with this.

Idiotic comment. So Man Utd have just as much a chance of winning the Europa League as Liverpool have of winning the league? How dumb. Nobody at all will have any objections to Liverpool being given the league if it doesn't complete.

This tone of comment doesn't help...

Of course Liverpool have a better chance, but the point is that if you start awarding one title then it's inconsistent if you don't award others, and there's no obvious method to award a cup. But that's not fair for something like the EL which results in a CL place, which is much more valuable in monetary terms than a PL title. So basically you either have to finish the season or give up on it.

But probabilities, in and of themselves, ARE mathematical law! Now, SOME of the values plugged into the model to get to the probabilities are fungible...you can rightfully take issue with that, if you like.

But, in the end, you will most likely be convinced of their accuracy and they've put faaaaaaar more thought into the values (and the model learns from any mistake it ever makes in the past) than you have.

One potential option I haven't seen mentioned for FPL would be to have additional gameweeks added after 38, rather than just having 90 fixtures in GW38.

Presumably once the season gets going again there will be a semblance of structure to it, so you could easily have GW39, 40 etc if the FPL site seems unable to pause the current scheduled gameweeks.

Why call it GW39/40? Just rename everything, so whatever week we re-start at just name it GW30 and so on?

I completely agree - but for some reason the FPL site didn't seem capable of moving GW30 so we've already had it and apparently are having GW31 too!

I personally think having a huge number of games in GW38 would be silly so would much rather have additional gameweeks added on at the end.

I’m not sure, despite the press releases, that this decision is there’s to make. It may well be that actually the govt decide it might be a psychologically good thing to do...that could be a reason to play...but whatever it is it won’t be the PL’s decision alone...I’m fairly sure of that.

That would suck. What about all those that kept their wildcards for unforeseen circumstances which is exactly what this is and why we even have wildcards for in the first place? Punishes those that haven't used their 2nd wild card yet.

If there were no wildcards in play in the game then I would agree with giving everyone a free wildcard but there are.

Isn't the latest news that no one has any idea when the league will resume?

The deadline is in less than 4 hours.

Kun might be rotated more than usual once Liverpool are uncatchable, so sell him.

The other problem with this behind closed doors thing is foreign players.

Cycling, as a sport, ran into the problem of riders just leaving to return home from some of the biggest races, and a lot of them, as things escalated in Italy and Spain. I wouldn’t assume any players from foreign shores are nailed on as their borders close, or potentially close, for the same reasons. Some may already be out of the country and not want to travel back, or maybe not even allowed to.

John Barnes suggestion to write off next season to finish this one is reasonable, though would make the gaps between gws tortuous.

Just nonsense. That would mean losing millions and millions of pounds. Huge amounts.

It’s the right thing to do but the reality is the clubs losing most of an entire seasons income just to do the right, and fair, thing. Won’t happen. It might if they are totally unable to start next season though, and for what looks like most of that season.

Would allow Pool to claim 2 years wins and level with Man U on 20!

So if we save transfers we can actually create a new team by saving the transfers such a long gap and fpl seems to be moving along with each fixture rather than freeze everything.

Surely you can’t just keep rolling transfers?
