World Cup of FPL – Group C and D results

Our World Cup of FPL tournament asks you, the Fantasy Football Scout readers, to vote for the greatest Fantasy Premier League asset of all time.

We first invited you to submit your long-list nominations before sorting the 32 most popular players into eight groups of four.

Frank Lampard, Robin van Persie, Thierry Henry and Gareth Bale have already progressed from Groups A and B, with Steven Gerrard among those who have fallen by the wayside.

Voting for Group C and Group D has been taking place over the last couple of days and we can now reveal the next quartet of players who have made it through to the knockout stages.

GROUP C – FINAL STANDINGS

  1. Harry Kane | 42.5%
  2. Didier Drogba | 35.0%
  3. Gylfi Sigurdsson | 12.8%
  4. Romelu Lukaku | 9.7%

Harry Kane and Didier Drogba both eased their way into the last 16 as Gylfi Sigurdsson and Romelu Lukaku fell at the first hurdle.

Kane and Drogba’s progression was in little doubt from early on in our poll and the only question was over who would top the group, with the former Chelsea striker initially edging ahead of Kane in the public vote.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward subsequently pulled in front of Drogba, however, finishing comfortably clear of the Ivorian.

Sigurdsson’s exploits at Swansea City, in which he scored 34 goals and registered 32 assists across two stints in South Wales, were enough to see him finish third in our Group C poll, although decidedly mixed spells at Tottenham Hotspur and Everton won’t have done him any favours.

Similarly, Lukaku’s more recent performances at Manchester United perhaps tainted his legacy.

It’s easy to forget that the Belgian hit double figures for Premier League goals every season from 2012/13 to 2018/19, recording at least 23 FPL attacking returns in five of those campaigns.

Drogba and Kane’s FPL royalty statuses meant that our two eliminated assets were always likely to be up against it, though, and there will be few eyebrows raised by the outcome of this particular vote.

GROUP D – FINAL STANDINGS

  1. Cristiano Ronaldo | 42.9%
  2. Trent Alexander-Arnold | 27.0%
  3. Eden Hazard | 26.5%
  4. Andrew Robertson | 3.6%

While Group C had something of a formality feel about it, Group D looked tougher to call.

And so it transpired, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Eden Hazard neck and neck for the second qualification spot from the moment our poll launched.

At one stage the pair were exactly level, with each having garnered a 26.5% share of the vote.

Alexander-Arnold ultimately pipped the Belgium international to second place, finishing just half a percentage point clear of Hazard in what was the narrowest margin of success in our tournament so far.

The Liverpool right-back’s career is still relatively embryonic but a barnstorming last two seasons, in which he has (so far) recorded 30 attacking returns and 27 clean sheets, were enough to see him through to the round of 16.

Hazard had delivered the goods over a longer period than Alexander-Arnold, scoring over 200 FPL points on four occasions, but the former Chelsea winger’s “troll” tag, undeserved or otherwise, may have been a damaging factor in our poll.

While one Liverpool full-back progressed to the knockout rounds, another bowed out.

Andrew Robertson was never in the race in this tricky-looking group, finishing bottom on 3.5% of the vote – only Patrice Evra has fared worse in this series to date.

Perhaps being drawn in the same group as Alexander-Arnold was to his disadvantage, given that the England right-back has had a more productive season and is by some distance the more popular FPL asset of the pair at present.

Cristiano Ronaldo breezed through to the next stage, despite not having graced the Premier League in over a decade.

His final three seasons at Manchester United were the most fondly remembered, with his 31-goal campaign in 2007/08 the pinnacle of his FPL career.

If the PL comes back to life in a few weeks, who are the players highest on your shortlist, and why?

There's some class players returning from injury, Kane Rashford & co.
After a break and with only a short season left, perhaps some of the older players will be really up for a sprint finish, Aguero, Willian.

Or maybe its those who have a contract running down, or who are playing for another season in the PL or Europe, or for the title even.

    Here's mine:
VVD - will be very keen to work back to consistent clean sheets, and has only goals missing from his season checklist.
Salah - probably walking alone on a beach right now, tweeting he'll never walk alone.
Fernandes - he's had enough time to soak up the positive energy sent his way following a classy entrance to the PL, and will be fit to prove he can transform united.
KDB - Pressure's off one of the highest quality players in the league.
Saka (bench) - A 4.6 mid finding his feet in an Arsenal finally looking to fulfill some of their potential (and chasing Europa league).
Kane - Class, and I suspect prime candidate for an excellent record of returning from lengthy absences.
Rashford - On fire before he was injured, and will be keen to prove his value on the pitch also after support for feeding the kids (what a man).
Vardy - All his kids will be driving him nuts. Eats goals for breakfast which no amount of stockpiled loo roll can satisfy.

I know the season is more or less over but I thought we could make transfers as normal each week just in case it isn't. I made two last week but doesn't seem like I can make any this week.

The worst bias ever. TAA won against Hazard? Comeee oonnn. 5 times 200 points has Hazard on what earth you live short memories fans

I'm ok with it tbh - i think TAA is the better FPL asset (Not that Hazard was terrible - he was just in a very tough group)

Granted, Hazard has scored more FPL points, but points alone aren't (always/exclusively/necessarily) enough imo

Theo Walcott has scored more points than Hazard for example, but I wouldn't put Theo in front of Hazard

      1. DOG GOD IT - KEANE 15

Theo actually scored more points than Hazard?

But yes, this is a good point right here.

Hazard played what - 7 seasons? And scored 200+ 4 times. But also went through drought patches like 5 games without any returns. For a price of around 10m, i don't think that was outstanding. Good yes, and in an easier group he probably would have gone through.

TAA is a Def, priced way lower than Hazard and still last season and probably this season if it had not been interrupted would have also 200+ points. And his career is just starting. IF he plays up to age 35, all in the PL, that would be like 17 or 18 full seasons and if he scores 200+ in 10 seasons or more, the boy will become a legend.

Theo has been around forever - he's made ~100 appearances more than Haz (Haz has scored 11 more goals & 5 more assists) but I wouldn't even go down the rabbit hole of going point for point between Theo & Hazard...

I just don't think Hazard's role as ~11.0 penalty taker/corner taker/sporadic George Best at Chelsea for 5 or 6 seasons automatically entitles him to progress at the expense of a guy who is looking like one of the most exciting players we've ever had in the game & has backed it up with 43 returns in his last 40 games (more prolific than Hazard's best ever season)

    2. Right In The Stanchion
        3 months, 8 days ago

        Hazard is massivly overrated.

His stats are padded out with penalties. Peak Sanchez was much better, but didn't have the squad t win the league

Anyone else put off by football because of the greedy and selfish players? Pathetic that normal staff have to take pay cuts while overpaid millionaires keep their full wage. Deafening silence from the PFA too.

Absolutely agree but that's not to say one party is worse than another - it's clear to see the Tories motives and has been since forever.

But the people of this country, rightly or wrongly, put Brexit above everything else including and most worryingly, the NHS.

Agreed. Look at the u-turn the Telegraph is performing at the moment. Spent much of the last few years slavishly supporting Boris and the only thing that mattered: Brexit. Not interested in facts, just ideology, driven largely by the owners' greed and financial windfall that Brexit would deliver them. Today's front page sees the same paper whining that the government isn't able to answer questions. No doubt driven by the owners' fortune falling by 30% as the economy tanks.

When comes to ££ i generally take news/things with a pinch of salt (hopefully I've said it correctly 😀 )

With donations some guys like to do it without letting anyone know. So those footballers maybe donating from their"earned" money.

Just because they earn more doesn't make them greedy IMHO.

If it comes to wage cut, you're right. Footballers should take wgae cut so that the staff with less salary can get their full salaries time to time. But isn't that the clubs lookout ??

I mean the sponsorship/etc money that these greedy clubs get is huge.

So if anyone is to blame, it's clubs. (At least top 2/3 tear clubs)

For small clubs, i can understand this feeling

Yes, ManU have decent fixtures, so I did Moura to Martial. Not sure how Rashford coming back will affect that but it gets rid of a rubbish player.

I can see a case for removing absolute deadwood like injured players (Dubravka for instance). Other than that its a crap shoot.

A bit out of the loop. If I use a FT this week - will I get another after deadline (4 Apr)?

Also thanks to some on here who joined in my fpl lucky dip game twitter. It's no champ manager but just a bit of fun. Still a few spots if you're interested @fplrichard

So what are u doing with your mini cash leagues if they cancel rest of the season?
Im leading all my 3 mini cash leagues and have all chips left except TC. Two of those leagues I have over 100p lead and voiding prizes doesnt feel right for me obviously.

              A) Void
              B) Current ranking and pay out all prizes.
              C) Current ranking and pay 50% of the prizes. (this sounds best for me.)
              D) Something else or no idea yet?

Put the money into a fund to help compensate premier league players that have to take a wage cut.

I think probably B, although if there was a big 'chips left' difference compared with points difference, you'd feel aggrieved.

Our ML had prizes for top 5 and manager of the month.

We will just use the leftover money for next season (minus any manager of the month prizes as most already been paid).

Should've won ahead of TAA, who probably would've won Group C comfortably.

                  Exactly.
People are being biased IMO for this season. Also, he was falsely known as Troll.

I maybe biased as u really liked him as a player, but selecting Taa ahead of him ? Nahh.

Maybe after 4/5 years when Taa does it year in year out I'd myself vote for Taa ahead of hazard.

                  But right now ? Nahh

TAA is completely essential and will continue to be unless FPL wises up in regards to the pricing of attacking defenders. Hazard was never essential in any season.

                      This season.

Hazard has done it for some span of time IMO.

Are Liverpool going to win the league in front of 50,000 empty seats? Their fans just can't catch a break 😀

I'll take winning the league at this point.

It's funny how some want the league to be void for health reasons, but will be the very first to laugh at Liverpool in that scenario.

'Hahaha, you didn't win the league..because of a deadly virus!'.

You'll win it this or next season with juggernaut Klopp has created !

Have to win this season, however it's concluded.

Just seen albeit on Twitter that the Belgian league has been cancelled and Club Brugge have been awarded champions with a 15 pt lead, no teams are relegated and 2 have been promoted from the league below.

Maybe that's a route PL will follow if games cannot be played, who knows.

I think the remaining games will be played over the summer and the new season will start in September or October.

Suspect the league cup and international friendlies will be cancelled to allow the season to finish in time for Euro 2021. Don't see how it could be done otherwise.
