The Double Gameweek 30+ assets who could excel both for and against Aston Villa

“Football is the most important of the least important things in life” – Arrigo Sacchi

On June 17, the Premier League will return with two postponed fixtures, Aston Villa v Sheffield United and Manchester City v Arsenal – let the countdown begin.

Firstly, it feels good to be writing again. It’s been a challenging few months, but with Project Restart gaining momentum day by day, the buzz is back. So, as focus turns to Fantasy Premier League (FPL), I thought I’d use this piece to discuss several players I’m targeting for the run-in and why I think they can make a difference. I’ll also touch upon their respective teams’ outlooks, along with chip strategy.

It makes sense to start in B6, with my club, Aston Villa.

The reality is we sit 19th in the table, with the worst defence in the division, having imploded before the break – let’s say I’m realistic about our chances of survival.

But there is a Double Gameweek, and if we’re looking for positives, we sit just two points behind both Watford (17th) and West Ham United (16th) with a game in hand.

We rank 12th for goals scored, and in Jack Grealish (£6.4m) and a fit-again John McGinn (£5.4m), we have a midfield double act who are a level above what most teams around us in the table possess.

We also only have to look to the Bundesliga and Hertha Berlin to see how a team can struggle pre-lockdown and then emerge as one of the form teams following the restart.

For the majority of the season, Dean Smith has used a 4-3-3 / 4-1-4-1 system, designed to try and get Grealish, our talisman, on the ball as often as possible. In an attacking sense, it’s largely worked – Grealish has scored more goals and created more chances than any of his teammates.

However, our over-reliance on one outlet has often come at a cost – we can sometimes be predictable in possession and lack creativity whenever Grealish isn’t at the top of his game. McGinn’s return to fitness should at least ease the burden on the captain’s shoulders.

This heatmap below illustrates where Villa have created their chances this season, and emphasises just how much we rely on Grealish down our left.

Gameweek 14 Scout Picks includes Spurs triple-up

Looking beyond the double, Son Heung-min (£9.7m) will be in my starting XI in Gameweek 31+ and is a serious captaincy candidate that week when Tottenham Hotspur host West Ham.

Despite missing seven Gameweeks through injury and suspension, the South Korean has racked up five double-digit hauls and 18 goal contributions already this season, and with an ownership of just 4.7%, I feel it’s too good an opportunity to pass up.

Arguably, no team has benefitted from the break more than Spurs, with the likes of Harry Kane (£10.8m) and Moussa Sissoko (£4.8m) now fit for selection, and with some big games to come against teams around them in the table, it’s all to play for.

Having used my Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 24, I’m currently leaning towards activating my Bench Boost chip in Gameweek 30+, with a Wildcard to follow in Gameweek 31+.

The Free Hit chip can then be used as and when it’s needed.

For those still struggling to decide which route to take, check out Zophar’s article, ‘What is the best FPL chip strategy for Double Gameweek 30+ and beyond?’, from earlier this week – it’s well worth a read.

At this stage, I’d usually post my team for the forthcoming Gameweek, but as I’m still debating several selections and the fact that things will no doubt change between now and deadline, there seems little point.

Instead, I’ll jump on the forum early next week and post my final squad, if there is enough interest.

Thanks for reading… until next time.

I will go for KDB & Aguero for sure.

The last space will definitely be an attacking one. Between Jesus, Sterling, Mahrez

Most likely will be sterling as i think he will start both games. He will be fueled by the black lives matter protest I think, plays better with Sane and he always starts off well.

    Can someone help please.

I’ve made loads of changes - setting myself up for a BB then WC strategy.

Completely forgot that I don’t have my WC. Trying to find a way to recouperate that lost value.

Quite happy with my pre-Covid team. So can I simply activate my free hit, and in GW31+ I will have my pre-covid team back??

    Stevens. Saiss. TAA. Laporte. Lascelles

    @AVFC82 and anyone else

Thoughts on El Ghazi? On pens and plays in a front three. Game time is a potential issue, but I think that's offset by McGinn coming back from injury

Seriously considering him. Already swooped quickly in a draft game to get him in, but will depend if I go for Sterling or Auba as to whether I have a midfield slot.

Thinking he's ahead of Trezeguet in pecking order to play up top with Jack G / Samatta. Couple of Villa fans have told me similar.

Nice write up AV82. Looking at our fixtures I am expecting us to have a real go at SHU....its one of our must win games imo (that and the Palace & WHU games). Draws are probably the best we can hope for in some of the other games (NEW, WOLVES, EVE).....don't fancy us in the other games though

I'm thinking Trezeguez might be worth a punt. Has underperformed so far this season but he has the quality, and put a nice goal away against Leicester last night

      1. Klaren

Is he first choice though? I think he is competing with El Ghazi for the spot unless Grealish plays in a central position instead.

He's played well in the warm up games by all accounts and he was first choice in our early season games, but his form was poor. If he gets the chance and is up for it he could do well though.

Please explain the hype for the Leno pick. I've seen him in most teams.
He is most certainly not getting a clean sheet in either game, and should concede more than 2 in the City game.
Ramsdale may get more points in a single game against an umotivated CP team

It's giving yourself the best chance of points. Saves vs Man City or potentially CS against Brighton.
One scuff in from Townsend or Zaha and Ramsdale has a mountain to climb to match either of those things happening.

Also nailed, relatively cheap route into a DGW team with very few realistic FPL options compared to the other three teams in double.

Why is he most certainly not getting a CS against Brighton? It's as good as any single GW for CS chances.

Also if you check Leno's history, you'll see that he can get decent points from saves even when they don't keep CS. He could easily get 3+ points vs City even if they concede more than 2.

I have WC, FH, BB left but thinking of sticking to my original plan of using FH in GW30+ and saving WC for GW32/33/34.

    Pope
TAa (0.3), Saiss (0.1), Egan, Taylor (0.1), Lascelles
Salah (0.3), KDB (0.6), Fernandes (0.1), Son, Cantwell
    Rashford, Jimi, DCL (0.3)

As you can see, a fair bit of fund tied up in my squad that looks pretty well set up for GW31+. Would really appreciate some helpful advice on whether to go with the grain on BB or to stick to gut feeling to protect value and get the best FH team.

Also, a point that I haven't seen discussed too much is that given we're loading up on Man C and Ars attackers, it's difficult to spread funds well across a BB without missing out on high ceiling players

I don't think I've ever been as frustrated watching an asset over a period of time.

Prime fixtures and he basically sat on his arse for 3 months. It included that time where he messed up shots against Watford and Man Utd so badly that they eventually got overturned as his goals & chalked up as OGs instead.

Also he doesn't score away from home.

Yeah I think I'm gonna do this. But rely on 6 ish dgw players and hope it's not a huge gameweek, which I think it probably won't be. Plenty of single game week players with nice fixtures this week anyway who have a great chance to match the likes of Villa and Arsenal players this week, let alone for the rest of the run in

It depends on your current team before transfers.

I quite like my current team and with BB,WC,FH left I am currently torn between unlimited transfers+BB this week or FH. Because I like to tinker with the team I am probably going to do unlimted transfers+BB, followed by WC following week and then keep FH for final gameweek...probably anyway 🙂

Which option is best for a FH?

    A) TAA + O’Connell + Egan
    B) VVD + Stevens + Baldock
    C) Robertson + Stevens + Lundstram(or any SHU below 4.9)

    Cheers!

Yeah, that's the risk mate especially with the quick turnaround for Arsenal...just fancy a punt on Bellerin or Tierney out of Arsenal defence (not gone on Sideshow Bob)

Thoughts on this GW30+ team for BB? Will WC after. Any recommended changes?

    Leno - Henderson
    TAA - Doherty - O'Connell - Egan - Targett
    KDB - Mahrez - Grealish - Mount - Cantwell
    Kun - Auba - Pukki

That is my current plan also. Yet Auba has had very poor service in away games, so keeping Mane or Salah is also tempting.

Agree, not overly optimistic on Auba''s prospects for the DGW but he's worth the punt imo.

Not sure. I'm considering that exact move but striker spots in my side are at a premium this game week as I'm considering an Aguero/Jesus/Abraham forward line.

I like Abraham a lot but can't fit him in... think I'll be going with Aguero, McBurnie and one of Aubameyang / Jimenez... still need to decide on that though.

Bench Boost or Free Hit this team? I'm quite happy with it which is why I consider FH

    Henderson / Pope
TAA Maguire O'Connel / Saiss Taylor
Salah KDB Bruno Barnes / Dendoncker
    Rash Jimenez DCL

aggressive front 3! Mahrez could be great, could get 30 mins across 2 game. I'm thinking Sterling over KDB on a FH purely for explosiveness but of course he could get 5 assists....
